The Coptic Orthodox New Year, known as Nayrouz or Nairuz, falls on the first day of the month Thout<\/i> That’s usually September 11 on the Gregorian calendar (ours), but this year it’s September 12 because 2012 is a leap year.<\/p>\n

Nairuz sounds pretty solemn — a religious holiday devoted to remembering martyrs. Still, we hope it’s a peaceful one for the Copts, who, as a religious minority in Egypt, tend to be singled out as scapegoats in times of social unrest.<\/p>\n

Above is a picture of Saint George of dragon-killing fame, a favorite of the Copts and one of the most picturesque heroes in anybody’s calendar.<\/p>\n
