{"id":334,"date":"2006-05-19T00:01:18","date_gmt":"2006-05-19T05:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musefanpage.com\/blog\/?p=334"},"modified":"2006-05-18T21:34:15","modified_gmt":"2006-05-19T02:34:15","slug":"the-iliad-in-haiku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/musefanpage.com\/blog\/?p=334","title":{"rendered":"The Iliad in Haiku"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Muse Contest Judges,<\/p>\n<p>The authors of these<br \/>\nThree ladies most beauteous<br \/>\nSent their warm regards.<\/p>\n<p>These poems are long<br \/>\nBut sum the Iliad well<br \/>\nIn perfect Haiku!<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p>Carrie F., 15<br \/>\nEmily F., 16<br \/>\nGrace F., 15<\/p>\n<p><u>Book I<\/u><br \/>\nRunner Achilles<br \/>\nMakes Agamemnon real mad<br \/>\nRage is felt by all<\/p>\n<p><u>Book II<\/u><br \/>\nCatalog of Ships<br \/>\nIs at the end of this Book<br \/>\nWe skimmed the surface<\/p>\n<p><u>Book III<\/u><br \/>\nParis Duels Greek King<br \/>\nAphrodite saves the prince<br \/>\nHelen laughs at him<\/p>\n<p><u>Book IV<\/u><br \/>\nTrojans break a truce<br \/>\nQuite a large battle ensues<br \/>\nWhat a big surprise<\/p>\n<p><u>Book V<\/u><br \/>\nFighting once again<br \/>\nCan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t they all just get along?<br \/>\nSomeone dies&#8211;guess not.<\/p>\n<p><u>Book VI<\/u><br \/>\nThe domestic book<br \/>\nWhere we see Hector in Troy<br \/>\nAnd Paris acts dumb<\/p>\n<p><u>Book VII<\/u><br \/>\nHector fights Ajax<br \/>\nBut don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get too excited<br \/>\nIt ends in a tie<\/p>\n<p><u>Book VIII<\/u><br \/>\nLightning sent by Zeus<br \/>\nStops the fighting for awhile<br \/>\nBelieve me, not long<\/p>\n<p><u>Book IX<\/u><br \/>\nThere is a meeting<br \/>\nThey want the runner back now<br \/>\nAchilles please fight<\/p>\n<p><u>Book X<\/u><br \/>\nTwo Greek Captains sneak<br \/>\nTo the Trojan camp at night<br \/>\nLike little children<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XI<\/u><br \/>\nThe fighters make war<br \/>\nTrojans die along with Greeks<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153No way out&#8211;no end&#8211;\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XII<\/u><br \/>\nTrojan soldiers fight<br \/>\nDespite an evil omen<br \/>\nThey really shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XIII<\/u><br \/>\nSneaky Poseidon<br \/>\nStarts the skirmish up again<br \/>\nStill fighting they are <\/p>\n<p><u>Book XIV<\/u><br \/>\nThis book is filled with<br \/>\nSeduction, deceit, and death<br \/>\nThis sounds like a soap<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XV<\/u><br \/>\nHector was wounded<br \/>\nWe forgot to mention but<br \/>\nHe still kills people<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XVI<\/u><br \/>\nIn Runner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s armor<br \/>\nPatroclus will fight and die<br \/>\nHis friend will be mad<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XVII<\/u><br \/>\nAjax slaughters foes<br \/>\nDefending buddy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s body<br \/>\nThe Gods help him win<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XVIII<\/u><br \/>\nPatroclus has died<br \/>\nAchilles goes all emo<br \/>\nThetis gets armor<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XIX<\/u><br \/>\nAchilles gets dressed<br \/>\nWhile all the other Greeks eat<br \/>\nHis armor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shiny<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XX<\/u><br \/>\nZeus lets the Gods fight<br \/>\nPlayground bullies once again<br \/>\nStealing lunch money<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XXI<\/u><br \/>\nThe river is full<br \/>\nChoked with the corpses of men<br \/>\nSuch great imagery <\/p>\n<p><u>Book XXII<\/u><br \/>\nPoor Hector is dead<br \/>\nAs if we couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have guessed<br \/>\nBlame foreshadowing<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XXIII<\/u><br \/>\nFuneral games start<br \/>\nThe end is drawing closer<br \/>\nOnly one more Book<\/p>\n<p><u>Book XXIV<\/u><br \/>\nWhy is this book here?<br \/>\nA question much debated<br \/>\nWas Homer crazy?<\/p>\n<p><u>Conclusion<\/u><br \/>\nSummary of Book:<br \/>\nGreeks kill many Trojan guys<br \/>\nTrojans kill Greeks too<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For a recent <i>Muse<\/i> contest, three talented lasses in Virginia condensed the Iliad into haiku: one verse per book, plus a conclusion.
