Muse Academy May Ball 2012 — Rooftop Garden

Alice's croquet game, as sketched by Lewis Carroll

An adjunct to the May Ball, this year’s rooftop garden features a tent, to turn it into an interior; croquet; and a clever and complicated mirror maze full of optical illusions, all described extensively on the planning thread.

It is warm and well lighted inside the tent; outside, for those who need it, there are cool fresh air and moonlight.

  1. FIRST ONE TO ARRIVE!!!! WAHOO!
i sit and look around. hmm it is getting lonely. i pull out my handbag. in my handbag i pull out a goat’s horn. i blow my goats horn loudly. then i put it back. a little while later hundreds of cats millions of cats
millions billions and trillions of cats come trotting over the hill as fast as they can and come right to me. i figure as long as nobody else is posting i thought i might as well have a cat party. and have a party all to myself. then i notice a crack in the wall. i get up. one of my cats scratches it. a secret panel opens! we all walk inside. one of the kittens was still left! but i grabbed her just as the panel shut. and behold my sight where just in that little room was a place. JUST FOR CATS!
i figured Cello Playing Mathematician would be here but no. CPM wasn’t here at all i was surprised. but i figure she’ll be here any minute so i’ll wait a little while. with all of my cats…

  2. I wander in and, as I am easily distracted by reflective objects, I immediately head towards the intriguing-looking maze. Of course, it isn’t until I am inside that I see the rose bushes. I smile slightly, then begin to walk down the corridor, admiring the mirror walls and ceiling. But, are the rose bushes getting taller? My smile widens as I realize that I’m walking through one of the famous-in-the-optical-illusion-world size-changing corridors. Then I come to an intersection. Which way? I pick left, and continue shrinking.a

  3. me and my kitties are having a miraculous time when i hear some bumping and thumping. i peek out of a little teensy weensy hole in the wall and see standing in the room talking are Randomosity101, Kittymine, and Robert. i am happy that i am very well hidden. just as long as no one notices the crack in the wall with silent meows and purrs coming through it. i decide to plug it up so no one disturbs my secret cat party. no one knows i am here. i overhear Randomosity101 saying “Catwoman is late again. she may never get here”. i chuckle to myself as i plug up the hole and go exploring to the giant room that my millions of cats can’t even cover.

  4. I come to yet another intersection and think to myself “Hmm, which way?” I’ve never been very good at mazes, but I’ll find the end/center/exit eventually. In the meantime, I’m enjoying the sensation of being the size of an average kitten walking through a rose forest. I’m halfway down the right-hand corridor when I realize I’ve been humming a familiar tune under my breath the entire time. Since I was humming subconsciously, I don’t actually know what the tune was. So I hum a little louder, but only a little – I worry that whatever it is, it may not be entirely appropriate to traipsing through a beautiful mirror maze. But as soon as I discover what I’ve been humming, I realize that it could not be more appropriate. I switch to singing quietly “I’m mad, you’re mad, we’re all mad here!” And continue on.

After a long distance, I feel like I am the size of a beetle. Then I realize I am heading into a dead end. I turn around and head back to where I entered this particular corridor, and feel like I am growing back to hummingbird size. I then pick another direction and promptly return to shrinking.
