did you like the google article? I can’t beleive 1: they spelled the googol (as this is the way it is supposed to be spelled) wrong and 2: I’m the first to leave a comment here!

Wait a minute-what? That was the February edition? So I just got the March one? *goes to check* Nope. I noticed that our resident Q&A columnists took the month off. I was slightly disappointed, but they deserve it. Unless their using pen names or something.
1- Yes, googol is spelled like that. Otherwise known as 1,000… Ha, you really thought I was going to write out 100 zeroes, didn’t you!
Googol=10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

There’s an HTML error on the title, I belive.

i got mine yesterday. did anyone notice that the “something for nothing” article was the SAME ONE as in the May/June 2003 issue. I actually wrote in to muse about it.
Did you e-mail them at muse@caruspub.com ?
2- They’re taking the year off, and some friends of Robert’s are doing it instead.
lifewithoutacellphone, Robert introduced the new columnists to the blog last month.
Yes, I did notice the sameness of the “Something for Nothing” article. Explanation, GAPAs? Please?
(10) None of us are on the Muse staff and therefore have nothing to do with their editorial decisions. But it’s not unusual for magazines to include reprints from time to time, for any number of reasons.
Also see Robert’s comment #7.
11- Ditto! I AM SO MADDDD. I think I’ll email Romana… but I don’t want to bother her.
The rest was good though.

So, what would happen if ants fought against wasps?
SPOILER SPOILER FEBRUARY MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I got it today. Here’s my reviews of each part:
Dear Muse Reader: The “Ox With a Nice Hide” one was funny. It’s one of the better Dear Muse Reader articles so far.
I wish that tattoo thing was real…
Oh well – I didn’t mind it that much, to be honest. And writing sand dollars pwn.
Bo’s Page: Meh, I dunno if I like the new layout. But the facts are good – it wasn’t completely obvious which was the fake fact.
Kokopelli & Company: TWO PAGES YAY! I thought it was funny. I didn’t really get the self cooking pie part, though. Can somebody try and explain it to me?
February Marches On: I liked it. It was a nice addition to Muse. I think it would be sort of boring as a regular feature though.
Oxygen: A Love Story: I really liked this story! The background was really distracting like last time. The end was kind of morbig, though…”The oxygen in each breath you take brings you everything that’s worth living for, but it will ultimately make you pay with your life.” Oh, WONDERFUL. -stops breathing in fear-
Border States: I thought it was interesting! I was wondering just recently why they were rectangular, too.
Something for Nothing: I really didn’t mind it too much. There was enough other intresting stuff in the issue, and I just read the February Marches On thing at the bottom. I would get annoyed if it happened more often than once every year or so, though.
Construction: Sight: Again, it was cool. I’m really good at the stereo display stuff, and the blue work was awesome.
A Lighter Shade of Pale: That would stinks to have that happen to you. Nuff said.
Mozart’s Little Muse: I liked it! i’m usually not interested in music and stuff, but this was fascinating. Conspiracy theory, almost.
Q&A: Great job, Andy and Ruth!
Muse Mail: You know, I didn’t actually realize that the first page of MM was gone until I got here and saw two.
Contests: Omg, the one about the brother rocked. The other two weren’t amazing, but ah well.
Watch Out, Phil: I CRACKED UP when I read the line “In Switzerland, a country we might imagine as being a little quieter than our own, people also turn to a loveable character to predict the weather – but theirs is an 11-foot stuffed snowman and they blow up his head.” LOL.
Overall: Great issue! 1000000 times better than the last one.
Keep on rockin’, Muse.
7- sure did!

oh, sorry for the dp, but I thought the Febuary thing at the bottom was awesome! especially the one about Bill Gates getting nailed w/ a pie and Indiana wanting to change pi to 3.2 (explanation????)

Q&A?
l’m fir bees, despite what Gary Havel says.
1. The fight might be a guerilla fight, where the bees quickly drop down, allow ants to crawl over them, fly to great heights, and then do tricks to drop them. Advantage: Bees.
2. Most bees live in social group, and therefore there could be an even fight.
3. As l said in 1, bees might not have to sting the ants. Even if they did, the reason that bees can only sting larger animals once is because their stingers get caught in the flesh. With ants, their mass wouldn’t give much resistance when they pulled out.
4. This one, Gary, only works if the bees lose, which they wouldn’t.
16 – Yeah, I loved it too. And those were my favorites as well. It was a nice flare/image of continuity in the magazine.
11: Oh, OK. I saw #7, but I didn’t know what it was referring to…

My letter got published, the one about quidditch in space. I loved this issue. Honestly, I didn’t even remember the Something for Nothing article from 2003 (the old issue is probably hiding somewhere in that black pit of doom known as my bedroom). It was a fascinating article too. I couldn’t get the 3-d illusion thing to work in the Construction article. I also loved the Mozart article, being a Mozart fan.

*deletes letter to Muse* My life just got so much better. In the past year or so Muse has been sort of “bleh” with an occasional really good article, and this was the best issue I have read in a long time.
Dear Muse Reader: *phew* It could be better (personally I liked the last one) but it looks like Nak is resuming her old interesting formats (wait, that was Nak, wasn’t it?) and that’s something to be glad of.
I sucked at the stereo thing. I can’t get my eyes to focus on something while still paying attention to the stuff in the background for long enough to make it work.
SPOILER SPOILER FEBRUARY MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
6- YES! Yes, I did. I was kinda confused/annoyed by that. But they didn’t put that quiz about why certain “perpetual motion” machines wouldn’t work…
Really, really good issue. I wasn’t subscribing back then/I don’t have old issues, so I didn’t notice the repeat article.
The only things I did notice were:
p.29, 3rd paragraph. “It is rare, but the typical cause is damage to an area called the brain, tucked away in the occipital lobe.”
Also, I read some of Oliver Sacks’ book Musicophilia.
p.15 “Wyoming stretches from 4N to 45N latitude…” This brings to mind a very large Wyoming.
Very amusing.
Uh, post 17?

Wahahaha…this was a really good Muse, I think. I really like the ones that have to do with fascinating things about science. So the article about oxygen was extremely interesting. I read the part about oxygen being partly responsible for the development of two sexes to my mom, and she was really fascinated. =D yay! *clapclapclap*
Also, I LOVED the last page. I was laughing so hard as I read that article…Switzerland likes to blow up snowmen. xD xD xD

In the Q&A about hydrogen cars, they should have mentioned that it is very important that the hydrogen be cleanly extracted, with renewable power, or else you haven’t changed anything.

26 – You’re right. I thought that the hydrogen car thing could have been better. I worked with hydrogen fuel cell cars for science bowl, and there were a lot of other problems with them. For example, the fuel cells are extremely fragile.

23-I enjoyed the article and wasn’t subscribing back then either, but one question I have is why do scientists keep trying to make perpetual motion machines if they know they won’t work?

Hmmm, unsure where to put this…
I just noticed that even though I put the whole “SPOILER SPOILER FEBRUARY MUSE SPOILER…” thing in front of my post, it still came up in the resent posts place! Oh No!
Augwich (31): “SPOILER” warnings don’t keep posts out of the “recent posts” zone. The idea behind them is to 1) fill up space so nothing with spoiler potential appears there and 2) warn MuseBloggers away who aren’t spoilerproof yet.
Oh.

I liked it. It wasn’t my favorite Muse yet, but I enjoyed reading it through.
The Construction: Sight article was good but I couldn’t get the 3D things to work, even though I focused just the way it said…the rest was good though.
The February thing on the bottom of the pages was fun to read, but I agree that every month it would get annoying.
“Dear Muse Reader” was funnier than it has been for awhile, I liked the “First Pages” better. They were more spontanius and funny, now they aren’t so good, weak at best, pathetic at worst.
Some of the contest winners didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but the brother one was really good.
I loved the “Watch Out Phil” on the last page, great pictures!! Haha, blowing up a snowman to welcome spring.
In all, a good issue.
I’m considering writing in, I dunno. I’ve thought about it before, and even written ones, just never sent them in.

I was pretty disapointed about the re-printing of that article, though. Even though it was a good one, and I liked it in the first issue it was published.

lately I’ve felt like the article artwork hasn’t been as good. I remember there used to be pictures and witty captions with each article and now the illustrations look stretched out to try and fill the page. Same with the writing. 1. It wouldn’t really be a fight if the bees attacked from the air. And ants can survive great falls, as I’ve found.
2. That’s true. What would happen if the ant colony were right under the beehive?
3. Yes, that’s also true. I think.
4. I’m still not sure though. Ants, despite their size, are still pretty tough. But if the ants were fighting against wasps, then the wasps would crush them.

47-I love it when they do that. Wasn’t Robert “Robert ‘Admiral’ Coontz” during the Napoleon/pirate issue?
36-I know, (I really did read the thread before I made comment 35) I was just saying I was disappointed. Maybe I’ll get around to e-mailing them, but I don’t want to make a fuss, because if they reprinted a really early article that I didn’t read, I would have been happy to read it without having to buy the back issue, even though the people who have been subscribing since the first issue would have been bored (Long, confusing run-on sentence).

Humph. I read it a while ago and forgot to post.
Overall, I liked it a lot. The Mozart/Starlings aricle was excellent (although my mother tried to rip it up). The “Something for Nothing” wasn’t shabby either, even if it was a reprint. I don’t think I was subscribed to Muse when it first came out.
I LUVED the optical illusions article, though. I. LOVED. IT.
Although they didn’t print my letter. *pouts* GAPAs, do you know if they print letters right away, or do you have to wait the nine months until it does/dosn’t get printed?
The “Ox with a Nice Hide” scared me a bit. But in a good way. I think my favorite first page is the Screamazon one. I’ve photocopied it and pasted it onto my locker.

47 — Actually, this was the first time I had ever noticed them. They’re cool! This prompted me to look through my past issues of Muse and, lo and behold, they were there every time! I think I like the ones with the quotes better than just random issue-related words. But oh well. I got distracted into reading a lot of articles. I think they were the ones about the rubber ducks and other various articles of flotsam. Yay Muse!
