Back in Business

That’s a relief, after two days in limbo.

You’ll have noticed that the “Latest Comments” sidebar has disappeared. There’s a story behind that: During the hiatus, our host company noticed that MuseBlog had been overloading its server with queries. The problem turned out to be coming from the sidebar. The plug-in that creates it operates very inefficiently, by looking through the whole blog every time to find the most recent comments. So we had to disable it.

(Someone has noticed that you can check recent queries almost as easily by looking at the RSS feed.)

The good news is that we’re upgrading our service to something called a “virtual server,” which will allow us to make as many queries as we like without inconveniencing anybody else. If it works, “Latest Comments” will be up and running again within a couple of weeks. The only drawback to the virtual server is that it costs more money, so everybody should hurry over and buy lots of T-shirts from Musery Loves Company Robert will be living off oatmeal for a while.

Anyhow, welcome back, and happy blogging! A round of pies for everybody!

  3. Robert, have you tried adding fresh blueberries to the oatmeal? The other day I woke to discover I was out of raisins, so I stirred in a handful of blueberries at the last minute. They warmed up most pleasantly without getting the least bit mushy. I tried strawberries, too, but the flavors didn’t blend nearly as well.

Anyway, if you’re going to be eating a lot of oatmeal, you might enjoy some variety.

Aw, poor Robert. Unfortunately I’m somewhat broke so I can’t go buy a t-shirt.

The RSS feed doesn’t work for me. Well, it’ll work once a day, and after that whenever I open it it’ll show the same comments.

I like oatmeal. It looks like some sort of rock I examined last year in Earth Science, the name of which escapes me. I can pretend I am strong enough to eat rocks for breakfast!

My mother is an oatmeal fanatic. Last november i ate it for all but four days that month for breakfast. Robert, i have found that raw, uncooked otmeal tasted much better even if it is a little dry. You can toast it in the oven for extra flavor.

Don’t worry Robert, I’ll buy some stuff so you don’t have to eat oatmeal.

Uhh… maybe oatmeal isn’t so bad after all.

  11. Actually, I like oatmeal. I’m particularly fond of the chunky steel-cut kind that takes half an hour to cook, though I don’t have time to make it on work days. I usually boil raisins in the water before adding the oats, but Rebecca’s blueberry version sounds good, too.

I honestly hate oatmeal. Or at least, I hated it the last time I had it. It was all mushy and sticky. Yiech.

I always knew that pesky latest comment bar was to blame.
Hey but I have the Latest Comments bar now… did it already get fixed?

  16. I’ve bought extra memory and processing speed in hopes that “Latest Comments” will work better. (It really is useful.) Hence the oatmeal diet.

You might like the oatmeal I make. It’s mushy (no way around that) but never sticky. The stuff you had last time was probably the one-minute instant type. I hardly ever touch that — too gluey. It’s probably perfect for cookies, though.

  19. Rebecca’s Real World Steel-Cut Oats.

â–ª Combine 1 cup water and 1/2 cup oats in saucepan (Note: this is half the water often called for.)
â–ª Bring to a boil. In order to prevent boiling over, do not leave the room during this step.*
â–ª Turn heat to lowest setting.
â–ª Wander off and do other things.
â–ª Suddenly remember you have oats cooking.
â–ª Rush to kitchen to find oats are fully and perfectly cooked.
â–ª Stir in raisins or fruit.
    â–ª Enjoy, preferably while MuseBlogging.

If time is especially short, carry out is an option. As a safety precaution, be sure to eat only when the traffics lights are red.

*Should you accidentally leave the room during this step, when you return, simply clean stove and floor, then repeat step one. This method takes longer and is not recommended.

Robert – No, this oatmeal was from my grandmother’s recipe, which she and many other people think(s) is delicious.

Rebecca – I’m sure it is the little touches that make that recipe so wonderful. Or at least, enjoyable to read. Because I don’t like oatmeal. And also – No salt? Not even a little? Wouldn’t that be bland?

Oh, and how about we carry the oatmeal conversation over to the cooking and food thread, which could really use revival? ( https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=1286 )
