I’ve recently read some translated Asterix albums at my hometown library and found them very amusing. Does anyone else read Asterix?
I read a few in their original language while teaching myself a bit of rough French a couple years ago. I liked them rather much! Did any of the ones you were looking at change the font to indicate a change in language being spoken?
Yes, the Goths speak in a “gothic” font, and the Egyptians speak in a font that looks like heiroglyphics.
Oh, good! I thought that was a really fun touch.
I DO!!! I READ ASTERIX AND OBELIX!
I have maybe… 10 of them? All English.
Asterix and the Cauldron
Asterix at the Olympic Games
Asterix and the Roman Agent
How Obelix Fell Into The Magic Potion When He Was A Little Boy
Asterix and the Class Act
Another Asterix and the Roman Agent
Asterix and the Black Gold
Obelix and Co.
Asterix in Corsica
Asterix in Belgium
Asterix the Gladiator
Asterix and Cleopatra
Asterix and Obelix All At Sea
All right, guys: SANDMAN. I just read it over break. Wow wow.
@Tess: SO GOOD. Are you starting the Overture ones? The run started at the end of October, and the next one’s due out
Ebeth summoned me from the aether to comment about video games but this was in the sidebar and. A few things!
1. NIGHTWING is ending and I’m so nervous~
2. DC is making a “Son of Batman” animated film and I’m so excited, Damian is my favorite Robin. Ok that’s lies, all the Robins are my favorite Robins.
3. Please tell me someone’s been reading Shingeki no Kyojin I need to scream about Armin
4. I need a new series but I’m so busy all the time but honestly the N52 is killing me; has anyone gotten through NGE or FMA because I’m considering these, but they’re very long.
Mel–My semester just started, so I’ll have enough reading to do that I think I’ll just wait until May and then binge-read all of what’s out then. I’m currently reading the extra volumes of the original series (outside of the main 10).
Interesting, my favorite is definitely Tim Drake…
Ooh. Tbh I have a love/hate relationship with him. Mostly because of my undying love for POOR STEPH. Got to say, though, Tim has the best mask.
I think I’m too big a fan of the angry Robins, as Jason was first in my heart until Dami came along. That being said, RHatO is actually a thing I love very much (Arsenal! Starfire); that and Night of the Owls are about the only N52 things I really enjoyed
(Batman NEEDS more Harper Row omg)
(though objectively I suppose Dick is still the Best Robin TM)
(he is also the winner of both Best Hair and Worst Hair)
(The Nightwing annual ruined my life it was just a big exposition about how he can’t just be HAPPY WITH BABS)
(screams into the sunset)
Shingeki no Kyojin? Yes I have been keeping up with the manga! What do you think of the most recent developments?
Well since the blog is so busy now and we’ve got this new thread, how are all the Homestuck fans bearing through this gigapause? Speculation for the final upd8? Wild predictions? Are we all stocked up on tissues and ice cream? Did everyone completely forget about the comic?
Nah, we just have other comics to read
I think about it daily. I’ve spent a lot of time reading meta analysis and speculation for the gigaupd8. And, you know, watching other shows and reading other books and actually not reading very many other webcomics, though I have a whole list of bookmarks to read when I get the time.
I would be completely willing to talk about upd8 speculation with you.
Same here… I caught up on Ava’s demon and read through Problem Sleuth, but I have been procrastinating like crazy on Gunnerkrigg Court.
So it turns out the gigapause will likely be longer than six months! I was betting on 4/13 for the final upd8, but it looks like it might be later than that…
I totally understand why this is necessary, but I can’t help but be a bit frustrated that I’ll have to wait even longer. That upd8 is going to be huge. I’m really glad that I’ll get to experience it.
I would highly recommend the webcomic Nimona! It’s a wonderful blend of sci fi and fantasy, a bit like Gunnerkrigg Court, but very different plot-wise and universe-wise. And instead of treated as opposing/coexisting forces, technology and magic just sort of hand-in-hand make up the world in a way seen as ordinary.
It’s about a villain and a girl who becomes his sidekick! And their plots to overthrow things. It’s funny and cute and dramatic! And not too far along.
+1 to this!
I love Nimona!
Wow, thanks for the recommendation… I’ve seen some of the author’s things before and this looks exciting!
Ohhhhh, so this is the Seriously Awesome Comics thread reincarnated. I get it now!
Anyway: Paradox Space, anyone? I’m not as emotionally invested in the MSPA universe as I used to be, but it still looks really promising, and I’m hyped.
Also, I’ve been reading the SNK manga, because I finished the anime and wanted more. Attack on Titan has stolen my reluctant heart.
Anyone else here a huge Grant Morrison fan? The Invisibles is so, so, something. Amazing. Crazy. I don’t know. I’m loving it. I’m only on the third trade, but I have all seven out but it’s too dense to binge.
Can anyone recommend a cool anime series for me to watch? (I’ve already seen Death Note and liked it a lot)
Neon Genesis Evangelion is my all time favorite! Don’t let the retro art style throw you off. It’s an angsty mecha, but honestly no genre descriptions could ever express how much it means. It just… Means… so much.
Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is good if you don’t mind constant death and violence. Very cool music, protagonist, etc. It’s incredibly popular.
If you’re into the demonic side of Death Note, Ao no Exorcist is good. It’s all demon-ish, except really cute, and the main character, despite being Satan’s son, isn’t a genocidal maniac.
Also kind of dark and demonic: Black Butler. (Obligatory corset scene mention). Cool demons. Also, there’s a solo tenor sax in the soundtrack, which has never happened in a baroque music-themed soundtrack to my memory, and it makes me incredibly happy. Takes place in Victorian era Europe. (second corset scene mention)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood: this one is like 50 episodes long but it’s a classic. My friend, after finding out that my name on here made the initials AL, started calling me Al after the character Alphonse.
Anyway, you’re probably all sorts of busy, so if you don’t have a lot of time, just watch Evangelion. Actually there’s a movie you have to watch too, in order to get the proper ending… It’s really complicated, and I just finished the manga. I cried. I rarely cry at anime or books or anything.
Today I stumbled across the manga Koe no Katachi. I think it was supposed to be a one-shot, but it was received so well the mangaka turned it into a series: with this in mind, skip chapter 1, because it’s just a truncated version of what happens in chapters 2 through 6, and it kind of spoils it. It’s 54 chapters and counting at the moment.
The basic plot is that a boy, Ishida, bullies a deaf girl at his school, Nishimiya, but after she is forced to transfer out, he gets ostracized by everyone else. I don’t want to say much more, because it’s absolutely worth reading. The site I’m reading it on has it voted as 9.8/10. I haven’t been reading much manga lately, but regardless, this is the best I’ve read in a very, very long time.
End of Nimona party/sobfest, anyone?
I can’t believe Homestuck is going to come off of hiatus…
Upd8! I’d just like to take a moment to share my confused ramblings… Aaargh it was so good!

Okay so I thought that maybe I wouldn’t be as into homestuck or attached to the characters after the gigapause since it’s been so long but holy cake.
Most intense moments:
1. The jumpcut to A6A6I3 came right out of left field and it was awesome.
2. Karkat dying. It was kind of bound to happen, since that whole situation was way too dangerous for him. But what a terrible way to go, sinking into lava. So sad.
3. Gamzee dying. We’ve seen him receive mortal wounds several times now, so I’m still not certain he’s gone for good. He might get stitched back together somehow. But that was a big relief.
4. Rose’s reaction to Kanaya dying. Every time there’s a witness to a murder it’s so good (Nepeta, Kanaya). Wow my heart is now broken.
5. Dave dying. He got to be the hero. Except he probably wouldn’t have seen it that way. Dave became one of my favorites when he had that breakdown in his house and we finally saw him smile. His character is really sad and I love it.
I really hope all this isn’t “undone” by John (death needs meaning!), but at the same time I do because so many people are gone. Who’s left? Aranea, John, Rose (injured), Terezi (injured), Roxy, Dirk. Karkat, Kanaya, Dave, Jane, Jake, and Gamzee all died in this one flash. Amazing. And heartbreaking.

yes but it all felt a little rushed. is he killing all these characters to make a quick end and speed it along? I’m concerned with aranea’s timeline in which she claimed she would take a dead timeline and make it come alive. this certainly feels like a dead timeline but I’m not sure if it still classifies as one. hm.
Welp, I just finished Cowboy Bebop. That was… really something. I had already had the ending spoiled for me. Not sure if knowing it was coming made it better or worse.
A couple of my girlfriends are obsessed with manga & anime, so I started reading Ouran High School Host Club and reading &watching Hetalia. I find that the Manga and anime of Hetalia are pretty much the same. I was really confused watching the anime. I was like, ok, subtitles, ok, words popping up on the screen telling me what the reference is to, wait they’re gone, rewind, pause, read… AUGH! I just don’t know enough basic world history, it seems.
I really like Ouran. It’s hilarious.
I enjoyed Ouran. I was kind of impartial to Hetalia, though. If subtitles overwhelm you, though, you can always read the manga, or watch the dubbed version. Tons of anime fans act all high and mighty for watching subtitles and not dubs, but don’t let them ruin your fun. Especially with lighthearted comedies, you’re not missing too much by getting slightly less accurate translations and slightly lower quality voice acting.
Has anyone here read Girl Genius? It’s really good, steampunky mad science, a great female main character, and lots of humor and drama.
In other webcomics news–I’ve finally read Gunnerkrigg Court! I like it.
Homestuck is off hiatus, again–Yes! On the downside, every upd8 so far has been Caliborn. I’m really just waiting to get past that. What’s happening is interesting, but put through the filter of Mr. manchild and terrible claymation vines–ehhh. I’ve decided that I prefer archive bingeing webcomics rather than waiting for them to come out bit by bit. You get the story all at once, no waiting on tenterhooks to see what happens, it’s easier to remember plot points and recognize foreshadowing because there aren’t months in between Chekhov’s gun being put on the wall and it firing.
Manga I’m reading–
Akatsuki no Yona–i’m not usually into shoujo but the character development in this is top-notch.
Tokyo ghoul re
Ao no Exorcist
Gunnerkrigg Court is great (though right now it is REALLY UPSETTING) and the art improves enormously throughout its run.
I have read Girl Genius, though I no longer follow it regularly. It suffers pretty heavily from Subplot Fatigue, so it reads better in long, sustained sections rather than update by update.
Your timing is truly bizzare. I am currently in the middle of an archive binge of Girl Genius. That was what I was doing immediately before I read this comment, in fact.
I quite like it, though I definitely see POSOC’s point as well.
I don’t read webcomics anymore, is what I tell myself.
A Softer World is ending and I’m sad about it.
ASW was not perfect and in many cases it was vicious and viciously depressed – but that’s suited me, sometimes. Various ASW comics have been the background to my computer for the past 7+ years, since long before I didn’t read webcomics anymore. I’ve grown up and changed, and a lot of the time I’ve grown into a greater appreciation of them. It’ll be strange to not have them around anymore, even though I stopped checking regularly years ago.
