Purple Panda’s Inner Self

Your family and friends might know you pretty well, but how many of them have seen the interior of your gastro-intestinal tract? Pan has graciously provided us with photographs of hers, which she’ll explain on this thread.

So, what do you think? Is beauty only skin-deep?

  2. If I interpret these correctly, the top batch of photos are what you would see if Pan were swallowing you (assuming you had a strong light source with you). The bottom photos are what you would see if she were digesting you. Needless to say, few creatures have witnessed these scenes and lived to tell the tale.

Uhhh… I never thought I would see Purple Panda’s insides. Very cool. Very weird. Had I not read the description, I would have had no idea as to what they were pictures of.

Just plain… (Hmm, what is a combination of cool and weird? Oooh, I know!) Just plain Muserly!

Ack! No! Robert, don’t even think about it. *shudders*

Anyway, if anyone can read the writing below each photo, it tells you where each picture was taken. They’re all normal, except for the first two on the lower set, which are sites of inflammation and other unhappy things. Just compare: The top left picture of the bottom diagram (terminal ileum) to any other picture in that set. To me, it actually doesn’t look as bad as the inflammation in my last colonoscopy, but according to the biopsies the extent is much greater. They won’t really know how far up the small intestine it is until the UGI+small bowel series.

A lot of this has been explained at the H&H….should I copy+paste that post, or just figure people will have read it there?

And, if anyone has any questions I love talking about this stuff, so ask away!

I posted a long, detailed post about this on the H&H thread, but I’ll just summarize here. I seem to be incapable of a summary, so here is another novella.

I have Crohn’s Disease, an autoimmune disease that attacks the GI (gastrointestinal) tract. Fortunately, mine is only located in the ileum (the most common location for Crohn’s), which is the area connecting the small intestine and colon. (Picture on bottom diagram, top left.) The rest of the colon is completely normal, but since the small intestine narrows and has many turns, they can’t get the scope any farther than the terminal ileum. They took many biopsies (basically tissue samples they can test after the procedure) during both procedures. The biopsy results came back a few days ago, showing lymphocytes in the duodenum and a lot of inflammation in the ileum.

The preparation for these tests is definitely the worst. Looking back, it really isn’t that bad, but it isn’t fun to actually go through it — you can’t eat anything for over a day, and you get to drink laxatives which taste *hackcoughhack* absolutely wonderful. *hackcoughsneeze* If your GI tract isn’t mostly cleared out, the scopes won’t be able to see anything. The prep I did this time was a lot different than any I’d done before — the last dose of laxative I was supposed to take 3 hours before the procedure (I really have no idea why, at that point it won’t really do anything anymore), which is probably the greenish/yellow stuff kiwimuncher mentioned.

I have two new medications prescribed: Entocort (I kept calling it Endicort at the H&H because my mom wrote it down wrong on her notes from the phone discussion with Dr. GI) and Pentasa. Entocort is a steroid which will help the inflammation and hopefully induce remission (I’ll take three in the morning), and Pentasa is a 5-ASA medication which will also reduce inflammation in the intestine (8/day- 3 am, 2 noon, 3 pm). Pentasa is the most colorful medication I have ever taken and it is a very pretty shade of blue. If all medicine was this colorful, it would be way more fun to take. After 8 weeks I’ll taper off of Entocort and hopefully still feel better. If not, I’ll go on other immunosuppressants which aren’t very nice.

I’m in Western Mass (Is it okay to say that GAPAs?). You should probably ask on the random thread, though.

Robert- Did you know that Fleet Phospho Soda makes a cartoon called “EneMan”? It’s hilarious. They have a calendar called “EneMan Goes to Hollywood” with pictures like “Lord of the Colon,” “Enemator,” “Enema Strikes Back,” “Saving Private Eneman,” and “Polyp Fiction.” EneMan is basically a giant enema walking around — there are pictures on their website. Very special, indeed.

I had to dig out my gigantic pill-container-thing from CCFA camp this morning to keep all of my medication, since I’m now taking 15 pills a day. It’s basically like a regular M-T-W-Th-F-S-S container, except it’s about 10″x8″, and for each day there are four compartments: Morning, Noon, Evening, and Bed. It works really well, because I take medicine at all of those times. The compartments are big, too, so they can fit everything.

I don’t know you, Purple Panda, but I truly love your insides! My son has inflammatory bowel disease and is scheduled soon for another endoscopy and colonscopy with biopsies. However, it seems that he is now facing liver disease, the exact type which we have yet to discover. I accessed your “Inner Self” through a dear friend, Rebecca Lasley. She is actually the only person I can write to about all the “stuff”(fecal and otherwise) that my son is going through. I’m glad you posted!

[I can vouch that this is indeed a friend of mine. We went to college together. I didn’t realize she was going to post, so I didn’t clue her in about the rules. Under the circumstances, we’re going to let this through without her real name. ~Rebecca.]
