NaNoWriMo 2008

November is National Novel Writing Month. If you don’t know what that is, you haven’t been here very long.

Good luck, novelists! May the Muses guide you.

  1. @1 – Oh, come on, PoPoPo that!

    … Anyway.

I’ve been told I could possibly get EXTRA CREDIT for my novel! Now I think I’ll definitely at least try to write one!

    Plot ideas? I have none.

  2. Here’s the idea for my novel:
Nano Ideas? start with A muse fan fiction about the oasis, a court case with Chris Baty and ninjas, two omnipontent narrator who can’t agree on what story to tell, and a frustrated writer. Throw in a wung, a thing, a kangaroo, a kola bear, and an emu, strange mac/windows/linux people, and robots. mix well. add three fates, a strange mystery, pirates, and dinos from jupiter. add a pinch of salt, and bake well for 30 days. That’s my NaNovel.

  3. I didn’t have a plot until about 50 minutes ago. My friend was talking about her plot/characters for her NaNo, and I told her I didn’t have any plot ideas, whatsoever. She came up with one off of the top of her head: a worm crawls into someone’s brain, and uses that person to take over the world.

And now I have a plot!

  4. 3- Yeah, my teacher said that too.
5- I had that idea once, except that it was a spider that crawled into someone’s brain.

BUt I am even more busy this year than last– I am on tech crew for the musical as well, which is this month (XP) and hockey is so much mor einvolved. We hae to fly to a tournament in NY next weekend, and go deeper into Chicago in 3 weeks >.<

  6. Is anyone staying up for it? I kind of want to, but I’m not going to be able to use the internet past fifteen minutes into the future…. Perhaps I should cheat.

  7. Well seeing as it’s 13 minutes to start time here, I’m pretty sure I’ll make it to the midnight start :D Now to prefect my first paragraph in my head…

  8. All right… 564 so far, not a bad start for 24 minutes in…

    663…

    804. Dad says bed. : P Oh well I guess… it’s not a bad stopping stop, and only for 33 minutes of writing. ‘Night, all.

  9. Meh. If I stay up another eleven minutes I could start, but I’m already so exhausted and sleep-deprived that depriving myself of more sleep the night before I go to exhaust myself more is not a good idea.

But I just opened the Microsoft Word document and will begin shortly!

  12. I’m trying to work up the momentum to start… I’ve arranged my Word document so that 1667 words fits perfectly on two pages. Now I know exactly how much I have to write!
I have a cold. This is not good. And it’s not a little cold either. It’s pretty full-blown. I’m hoping it’s reaching its peak–not only for NaNo but for the school musical.
All right. I’m going to go vomit my first paragraph into the computer.

  13. 0!

I’ll write some later after I’ve done homework.. probably not going to finish this year, though – too much else to do.

  14. I have a little over 1K so far. I have a little thread of a plot idea (I don’t think I’m going with the worm one, after all), but I only have two characters established so far.

Last year, I hit 50K with hardly any plot whatsoever.

    Pie 0

  15. Aww, this thread makes me really want to participate in NaNo this year. Maybe I’ll get in on it later in the month, but these first two weeks are going to be absolutely insane and I know if I try to do NaNo too, I’ll write all the time and not do my other (more important) things. Rats.

Good work, guys! Everyone is so far along. My second year, I finished a week early and that was the best feeling ever. “I wrote a 50k novel in three weeks!”

  23. NaNo participants: did you sign up for the pep talk emails? Chris Baty’s just popped into my inbox a few minutes ago. He wrote that this week’s are going to be by Philip Pullman and Jonathan Stroud.

    (61) Here’s the description from the official web site (nanowrimo.org):

    What is NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that’s a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

  25. I had the SAT this morning, and I’m still without a plot. I have a main character and some cliche plot points, and I’m thinking that aliens are in order. Christa is more annoying than anyone I’ve ever met (so were my characters last year) and everyone in her family is clearly just an outlet for my irritation with my own family. So maybe if some aliens capture her she can discover strength she didn’t know she had blah blah learn to appreciate her family blah blah accept her limitations and learn that she can do more than she ever thought possible blah blah wind blows in her hair blah blah she smiles with contentment the end.

  26. Current word count: 1,480

I have two characters, so far:
    1. Jeremy. He does something with public radio and rides the subway to work.
    2. Emmie. She is a cryptographer (currently teaching cryptology at a local university). She also rides the subway to work.

    And that is all.

  27. I had an INSPIRATION in the shower this morning. It’s true, all good ideas really do come in the shower!
Les Miserables, the novel that I’m retelling as set in WWII, tells the story of Jean Valjean.
I had the idea of asking my story, “Is that so?” Think about it. A lot of good stories have come about by that question. Wicked, for example, is the answer to that question when it’s asked of L. Frank Baum (the author of the Oz books.) It’s the other side of the story.
So, I’m ditching Valjean and telling his daughter’s story. I never liked Valjean much, which was odd because he’s only the MAIN CHARACTER… So there, Valjean. :P
I still have 786 words left to write for today’s goal. O_O Grr.

Christa has thus far cried over a broken backpack, eaten a bunch of cookies, puked in the woods, and met some possible extra-terrestrials. The sad part is that I know this is probably going to be the best part of my novel.

  33. Meh. Still 175. -feels slow- Oh well. I don’t have any hope of winning anyhow. I haven’t even told anyone I’m doing NaNo. What with…-waves hand vaguely-…everything. I just don’t have time. Quite honestly, I think theater’s really bad for me. Physically. I don’t really eat much, and I’m invariably stressed out and live at the school and work for several hours a day not getting much done. But it’s fun, so I don’t really care. The play’ll be over pretty soon anyway. And then I’ll jump right into the next one!

Anyway, NaNo. Not a good idea. Maybe if I do all my Algebra homework, then I can work on it.

Those 2004 words that I wrote = the world’s worst prologue. The idea is good, but the writing itself is bad. But, on the plus side, I killed off nine (mostly minor, only four of them were actually given names) characters!

and of course the one time it actually mattered, i forgot. now i’m stuck here without the latest part of my story, which is actually a problem for me. i’m not very good at jumping ahead and trying to fit things back in, mostly because i don’t really plan much in advance and my stories change constantly.

Hmm… where am I with my story? MC2 is resenting MC1 for not knowing how to wash dishes or mop a floor at years old. MC1 misses her mother like mad—and she’s not even dead yet. I have to work in MC3 somewhere, and all his buddies.

I have to force myself to include dialogue. It’s rather irritating, because then the dialogue I force myself to have is awkward. Seriously, though, I think two of my characters have said two sentences each. O_O

  58. i’ve been almost exactly a day behind for about four days. and the way things have been going for me, i’m lucky to be only a day behind. i had to do some serious writing after losing both a day and a thousand words all at once. >.<

also my ipod is dead. and i can listen on my computer, but of course i was still in the process of moving all my music back onto my computer from my ipod.

which means L-Z (including everything that starts with The, as senuti counts those as T’s) is gone pretty permanently. until i can download it or beg it off friends.

so my music is somewhat limited, and dominated by Rush, Flaming Lips, Sonata Arctica, and the Beatles, which were all on my computer before (in large quantities, i own basically everything those bands have ever done)

    i guess that’s more a music discussion…

Around this time the cat began to hum softly to himself. He just kind of muttered out the barest syllables possible with the tiniest amount of tune possible, so really it was more of a rhythmic monologue than anything else. Anyway it was kind of nice sounding and it went like this:
“Now we’re off to find some shoes and spread the goodness to the poor, oh yes, we’re off to find some shoes and spread the goodness to the poor, we’ve got three new converts and we’re off to spread the goodness to the poor, hum dee dee dum dum… la, la, off to find some shoes… They think we’re off to find them and give them back to the fat rich slobs but no we’re off to spread the goodness to the poor, that’s what we’re going to do, hum dee dee dum dum dee dum dee dum doo day! We’re off to steal some shoes and spread the goodness to the poor! Off to steal some shoes and spread the goodness to the poor! Oh yes that’s what we’re off to do dee dee dum hum dum dee dee doo doo dee day!
“We’re off to steal some shoes and give them to the needy, oh yes, we’re off to steal some shoes and give them to the needy, the richies don’t need ‘em much and so we’re off to steal some shoes and give them to the needies, the needies, dee dee dee dee dum dum dum doo dee dee dee dee dum… Me and my Merry Band of Finches and People and a Dog we’re off to steal some shoes and give them to the needy, the needy who need them today! Dee dee dee dee dum dum dum doo dee dee dee dum hum doo doo dee doo dee doo dee hum dum dum dee dee day! Yes we’re off to steal some shoes and give them to the needy, hoo hoo!
“The needy! The needy! We give shoes to the needy! We steals ‘em, and gives ‘em, we gives them shoes to the needy who need them right now! The needy who needs ‘em today! La la la la, lalala la la la lalalala la doo dee dum dee dum dee doo! The poor and the homeless too often go without, la la la la! That’s why we’re
“Off to steal some sneakers, and sandals, and boots and spread the goodness to the poor, the poor, we’re off to steal some sneakers, and sandals, and boots and spread the goodness to the poor, we’re off to steal some sneakers and sandals, and boots and give them to the needy who needs them today!”

eurgh i have horrible writer’s blockkkk I want to write about CENTAURS ALREADY!

Okay so Lennie just cured the fever in Dulathe and now they’re walking through the night and soon Max is going to here a WEIRD NOISE and there’s a forest right there, so Kerynne and Lennie are scared… so they go into the forest and AHHHH CENTAURS so yeah. Action/thriller scenes are the best to write.

  78. Sorry for the 2post…

My antagonist has a monkey. It does not have a name. It is just THE MONKEY. it likes to poop on her hand….

    I’m very weird.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  79. 191- …And I thought my antagonist had issues…

Chapter Fifteen is a “Meanwhile” chapter written from Bartholomew’s point of view. This should be fun… *hysterical laughter*

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  80. I’m loving the purple, by the way.

I really shouldn’t have done Bartholomew. She’s just going on and on about morals and society and people refusing to think for themselves and I’m starting to really like her character after 1,000 of her ranting on about the problems in society. I was originally planning – vaguely – to kill her off but now I don’t think I can.
*facepalm* I even love my antagonists!

  81. 22k, i’m trying to get to 25k today and then i will only be one day behind! of course i will fall farther behind during the week because it will be torch week. but then i have thanksgiving break to catch up again

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  82. 196- Yeah, I’m planning to write 2.5k a day during Thanksgiving Break… we’re not doing ANYTHING that whole week so that’ll just give me more time to write.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  83. Ok, so yesterday I had a brilliant (if I do say so myself) idea for a serious fantasy thing and now I’m very stuck at a pivotal moment in the plot, well, really the beginning of the plot, because I really want to write this other story.
    *sigh*

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  84. 185- Don’t worry. To get words, I had my character sing all four verses of “If you’re happy and you know it.” And I wrote the whole thing down.

I’m behind, due to jet lag and ten hour plane flights, so I worked out that I have to write two thousand words today. No problem. Hopefully.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  85. Ahh! w00t! Past 25k!

I’m almost at my climax, which sucks, becasue I still have half a book to write. So I’m stalling like crazy, and all these people are falling in love and being killed or whatever, because I just CAN’T have the climax before 35k! That would ruin everything, and I’d have to turn the rest of it into a mushy romance or horrorific horror. :O

I’m almost caught up, I didn’t write at all yesterday.

    The devil tempts me with sleep. I must… keep…writing… must… get… to 26600…zzzzzz

    Pie 0

  86. Oh no! I’ve reached the cliché stage! Wise centaurs have made a prophecy about my character being the one to save the world! AHHHH!!

    But still, 28,220!

  88. 202-Yes, I’ll send it in if you promise not to laugh at me.

I’m at the pointless dialouge stage too, but mine has a pointless plot to go along with it.

Wow, I have so many random sub plots that aren’t even existant. It’s all so confusing to keep up with.

    28772, done for today.

I did my dedication today, too. It’s longish, but you guys and the GAPAs are in it. :)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  89. 206- Why would I laugh? Unless it’s funny, of course. But yeah, I promise not to laugh at you.
I’ll be sending mine in, for real this time. ^_^ So y’all can critique the heck out of it, I s’pose. Although I do like it better than what I did last year.
Dedications… Hm… those count towards the goal right?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  90. Actually, you’d be too busy calming your queasy stomach to laugh. It’s truly sickening how bad I write when I’m under pressure.

Yes, the dedications count toward the goal, as do the chapter titles, quotes and whatnot.

I switched to the Pop radio station on Pandora, which I haven’t listened to forever. I must confess, the electronic beats and whiny voices aren’t bad for writing a scene that has barely anything happening in it.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  91. 30369. Done for today. Now I actually get to call Clarissa!

That’s like, a rarity these days. Because I was sick all this week, I didn’t see her, and I didn’t call her because I had to catch up about three thousand words two days ago.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  92. 208- Sickening as in, “I can’t believe he wrote a sentence that awkward” or sickening as in, “EW! Gross…”?

I tested the word count validator. It cut my count back by 400 words. *head-desk*

    Pie 0

  93. Eee 31078 or something. I really l ike being 500 words ahead! What’s the quota for today? hmmm….

  94. I wrote over 1k words yesterday! And did it in 4 minutes too. It was AWESOME. (You can see why I’m only to 6100 if writing 1000 words in one sitting is a big deal.)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  95. 210-Sickening like “oh my god that is the worst sentance I have ever read” *reads next sentance* “just kidding, that’s the worst” *reads next sentance* “nope, that one tops those other two…” etc.

  97. 214- Ah.

  105. Woo, good job, Kiki!

I finally made it to 44k last night, now I’m at a library (a really, really nice one actually, I think it ranks somehwere in the nation’s top 10 mom said. It has a foud court, and a gift shop, and a kind of art gallery…) as I have two hockey games today and didn’t want to drive home inbetween. I just need 3,000 words today and tomorrow, and I’ll make it.

Seeing as I did around 4,000 yesterday, I should be able to do it.

(…and then make fun of Josh about it, I don’t think he was anywhere close last time I checked, that might have changed though).

Also, I will be getting the shirt again, woo!
I personally am thrilled about the little viking hat on them :D

  109. 47064! And plenty of time left to write.

Do not even begin to think you have out-almost-cheated me. A small sampling includes:

    – An entire village introducing itself, all with names like: Leaves that are Painted Red by the Autumn and Rimmed With Frost, Song of Water Tumbling Down a Mountain, Braying of a Mountain Goat as it Falls Upon a Sharp Rock,Distance Between the Sun and the Horizon when it is Highest in the Sky, Distance Between a Pont and a Line, Parabolic Flight of an Upwardly Launched Projectile, Irritation of a Reader as he is Forced into a Repetitive and Silly Paragraph that does Nothing for Plot Advancement, ect (last name by Grant O., one before that by Fortune Cell)
    – My character reciting the entire poem “The Garden of Proserpine”
    – The entire village then proceeded to sing about 11 Beatles songs (complete with all vocal repetitions and random background yelling)
    – My character getting random songs stuck in her head, and of course needs to tell the lyrics (Elvenking (Dominhate), a few Modest Mouse)

Ect, ect. It is bad. I didn’t have to cheat at all last year… D:

    Pie 0

  110. I was going to cheat (posting the whole lyrics to half the Unia album) but I decided not to. I didn’t cheat at all, other than that and random ramblings of random people about nothing.

  111. 245- True. But it nearly outweighs the actual content >.<
Oh well. The things I do to win…

Odd, my character is constantly tired. Maybe she’s sick. Oh dear. I think I’m the sick one actually… I think I have a cold…

Oh god. So. I Started Nano 2 years ago. First year, made it about 10k. Second, all the way to 50. Probably getting to 50k again this year.

This is all the same story. It is perhaps a little over halfway through.

…Oh dear. It never ends… maybe once I cut out all the crap, it’ll probably be a good fourth of it… but still… x_x

  115. Well, I lost every position I ever held in the Musiverse, every RRR I participated in has probably now grown beyond recognition, I’ve gone at least half mad, and a sizable portion of the blog probably thinks I’m dead or have wandered off.
    But I did it.
You heard me, ladies, gents, and assorted entities. I won. I won NaNoWriMo.
Windhenge is complete. And it’s worse than Flamehenge, but hey, I thought Flamehenge stunk too, and lots of people loved it. Maybe somebody somewhere might be able to wring some enjoyment out of it.
So tell me, blogular colleagues. What did I miss this oh-so-fruitful November?

  116. 255- Not much…the Zommer was destroyed on a mission to save the world from complete bunnification, Pie Isle has been brought back to life, the Chronicles of Museica thread died, RtH and Midnight Fiddler had a Kokonvention, the third bunny movie came out, we did MuseBlog signatures, we’re editing the Bunny Apocalypse thread, and there’s a war in southwest Dornavenk.

    Well, congrats for winning NaNo.

Unfortunately, no pics from this kokon. They just posted as ‘RtH and Fiddler’ for a while.

  122. 263- Is this about the Bunny Apocalypse silliness thing? If so, you didn’t offend me at all. Silliness in an RPG is fine, it’s just that BA had started out quasi-serious and the new elements didn’t seem to fit to me. That’s just my opinion, though, I wasn’t saying it was inherently bad. Pay no attention to the snarky grognard :D And I’ll work on the WMMBA over Christmas break.
264- I will if people want me to, but I warn you, it really sucks.

  123. I know everyone is emerging from their 50K novels, but have you ever considered writing flash fiction? I just started flash fiction class (in Literary Arts), and our first exercise was to write a short story in 25 words or less. I knew it was going to be difficult, but it was absolutely insane! She gave us about 40 minutes to do it, and I definitely used all of the time. My draft is below — it’s exactly 25 words (not including the title).

    Assassin

Oscar closed his hands around the crisp bills. Running from the dark brick house, he felt the cold gun strike his thigh with every step.

I found it really difficult to just set a scene and establish character in 25 words. And I’ve never written flash fiction before (not even longer flash, which, I think, can be up to 1K words). But I think everyone should try to write a 25-word story. Now. Go!

[I thought this would be a good spot to put this post because it’s sort of the opposite of NaNo, but feel free to move it to wherever you think it would best belong]

    Pie 0

  124. Yeah, that’s what I meant. I totally agree with you about the silliness thing, I just kind of feel like every time I tell you that I end up sounding like an immature, whiny idiot. Which is not how I really am (I hope not at least),

  130. 267- I’ve done that in class before, too. Here are some I’ve written.

    The Loner:
Janine strode along the forest path, hands forced into her pockets by the nipping wind that whipped her hair and chilled her to the bone.

    Embargo:
“Do it, then,” Lex whispered, and his black eyes shuddered to a close as his ruthless attacker fired the cold gun pressed against Lex’s temple.

    The Forest Nymph:
The elven princess embraced the forehead of the fallen warrior. Now, at the end of the colony, she finally knew her love for the man.
