For a long time, the WOP thread has been haunted by MBers who despair of the anarchy there. Society asks us to be serious, organized and civilized. The world of piecraft doesn’t have rules or constraints. It’s a crazy mess where everyone has the equal rights to pie or be pied. It’s impossible to mess up the story-line because there is practically none. You can fight with a medieval chain-and mace or a futuristic atom-bomb.
In a way, I agree with you. It’s irreal, attracts -phytes and is ridiculous. The MBers squabble like little kids and it’s impossible to organize. These are the faults society looks down upon most.
My question to you: Why not ?
Why can’t we be crazy ? Does every story have to have a plot, every song it’s notes, every library it’s filing system ? Does a bird memorize it’s song to sing ? As soon as we make a suggestion in the real world, it is battered with buts, ifs, whys, … In the world of piecraft, there is no consequence. You can do crazy stuff. And no-one asks you why. It’s a window, an escape, a possibility.
Does life have to be serious ? Is our freedom limited to small weekends, minutes, seconds ? Should we be embarrassed when we are different or childish ? Is immaturity a horrible crime ? When does artistic license stop ?
In a way, your lifestyle depends on your values. Of course, your teacher won’t like it if you think your computer time more important than your spanish class and act accordingly. But which values of society are self-evident, which are ridiculous ? Now, we look down on people in the past, thinking their values queer, them uncivilized, etc. What will people say about us in a century from now ?
I’m not saying people should revert to anarchy. I just wanted to point out that things that are different are not always bad, and that I find it wrong to condemn something because of the sheer contrast to something else. That is immature.
