(The next board has two extra pieces: on the c file, an Archbishop that can move like either a Bishop or a Knight; on the new h file, a Chancellor that can move like either a Rook or a Knight. This version of chess was invented by world chess champion José Raoul Capablanca in the early 20th century.)

OK, that was indeed amazazing. And it truly deserved the extra syllable. I can only imagine what it would be like playing against another person…
Let’s experiment with other layouts. All knights? All bishops? Bishops and rooks?

  3. Not tonight. I’ve stayed up far too late playing with this new toy. Maybe Rosanne will show up for some wee-hours moderation, but I can no more. Good night, everybody.

  5. bookgirl_me says:

Cool! Do you have one (two) that can do tandem chess? You know, when there are two boards and two teams, and the figures from one board can be used on the other board by the players teammate? I’m not sure what the english word is, but it would be fun.

I´d like to try a game of Capablanca chess with anyone interested; playing with myself is okay but I always win, which makes it sort of boring.

I’d love to. You’ll probably kick my posterior (I’m not great at chess) but it would be worth it to try this awesome experiment.

    • I’ve heard the first kind of chess you describe called “bughouse chess” or “Kriegspiel.” This software doesn’t allow it, unfortunately. (By the way, in English “figures” are usually called “pieces” or “men.” “Pieces” is also often used to mean “non-pawns” — much as it’s equally accurate to say “I have ten fingers” and “I have eight fingers and two thumbs.”)

No one seems to want to play Turbo Chess. I’ll play with someone, if that’s OK (since I’ve already got a game of regular chess with Piggy).
