MB Chessplayers — Your Help Is Needed!

Some of you report that you haven’t been able to move your pieces since we upgraded the blog’s chess software around the end of July. We’d like to solve the problem but need more information.

  • Can anybody move, or is it a universal outage?
  • If you can’t move, have you tried clearing your browser’s cache (not just the browsing history, but the actual cache of Web pages that your browser stores to make them easier to load)?
  • What sort of message do you see when you try to move? Does it say “closed board,” or does it tell you it’s waiting for your move and then fail to accept it?

(Of course, some of you probably have gotten tired of chess and stopped playing, but if anyone wants to keep playing, we’d like to make it possible.)

Here’s the status of the games so far:

bluefire vs. RoseQuartz (https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=3688): bluefire’s turn to move; RQ’s last move, July 24

  1. I’d love to keep playing. I was able to move, but it was after many tries and struggles.

When I couldn’t move, I got a message that said: Closed board. White to Move – but I was logged in, and I was white.

  2. I just tried logging on again. I think it was after you made the new thread.

I just logged on. It says ‘Closed for Opponents’ Move.’

      1. I can tell that I’m logged in because the name and email forms aren’t there. It says “Closed game. Black to move”

  3. It’s not working for me! I’ve tried logging out and back in again, tried moving the pieces anyway… It just says “Closed game. Black to move.”

  4. My game says: Open game, awaiting your move (post will update).

when I’m logged in. Is there any reason I should not move right now? (Just making sure…)

Some tips for people who can’t move:

    1. Make sure it’s your turn to move. ;) (I trust you’ve got that under control)

    2. Make sure that you’re still logged in (you should see “Log Out” as the link farthest to the right in the bar at the top of the page, not “Log In,” of course).

    3. Make sure your cookies are enabled, (Now wait a minute, what are you doing with that jar of cooki–oh, nevermind) or when you navigate to your chess thread after logging in your computer won’t remember that you’re logged in.

    Hope that helps!

  5. Mine said ‘Open game, awaiting your move’ and let me move just fine. I reached it through the search engine, logged myself in and went back through history, and moved.

      1. *quacks* sorry, couldn’t resist. (I’m in a hyper, in-the-mood-for-annoying-other-people state at the moment) I will now leave this thread without saying anything useful.
