Some of you report that you haven’t been able to move your pieces since we upgraded the blog’s chess software around the end of July. We’d like to solve the problem but need more information.
- Can anybody move, or is it a universal outage?
- If you can’t move, have you tried clearing your browser’s cache (not just the browsing history, but the actual cache of Web pages that your browser stores to make them easier to load)?
- What sort of message do you see when you try to move? Does it say “closed board,” or does it tell you it’s waiting for your move and then fail to accept it?
(Of course, some of you probably have gotten tired of chess and stopped playing, but if anyone wants to keep playing, we’d like to make it possible.)

I’d love to keep playing. I was able to move, but it was after many tries and struggles.
When I couldn’t move, I got a message that said: Closed board. White to Move – but I was logged in, and I was white.
What did you try, and what changed? Could you move right after I made the new thread for your game, or did you change anything on your browser or your computer first?
I can move, and when it’s not my turn it says: Closed for opponent’s move.
I just tried logging on again. I think it was after you made the new thread.
I just logged on. It says ‘Closed for Opponents’ Move.’
That’s because it actually isn’t your move, right?
Right. I think that’s actually hopeful – in past times it didn’t seem to recognize that I was logged in.
It’s saying that because it’s my turn. It’ll stay my turn forever unless the GAPAs figure something out.
Righto, Ducky. And what does it say when you log in and go there?
When I try to move the borad dosen’t even look like I’m logged on, but it says that I’m logged in.
What does the message on the board say? “Closed game”? Does it say anything about whose turn it is to move?
Also, where does it say that you are logged in? I don’t remember having seen a message like that.
I can tell that I’m logged in because the name and email forms aren’t there. It says “Closed game. Black to move”
That’s what happened (except it said white) to me before.
But now it works for you? Did you do anything unusual just before it started working?
I got it to work.
Here’s what I did:
-get to the thread through the search engine
-put in my move
I’ve been waiting for cromwell to move, so I can’t say anything.
Enceladus: I’ll go back and erase your last move and see if the program will let you make the move again. Then we’ll know whether it’s working for you.
As far as I can tell at this point, it’s working for everyone except Ducky.
It’s not working for me! I’ve tried logging out and back in again, tried moving the pieces anyway… It just says “Closed game. Black to move.”
I can’t move my pieces and it just says ‘closed game’.
My game says: Open game, awaiting your move (post will update).
when I’m logged in. Is there any reason I should not move right now? (Just making sure…)
Some tips for people who can’t move:
1. Make sure it’s your turn to move.
(I trust you’ve got that under control)
2. Make sure that you’re still logged in (you should see “Log Out” as the link farthest to the right in the bar at the top of the page, not “Log In,” of course).
3. Make sure your cookies are enabled,
(Now wait a minute, what are you doing with that jar of cooki–oh, nevermind)or when you navigate to your chess thread after logging in your computer won’t remember that you’re logged in.Hope that helps!
RtH
Mine said ‘Open game, awaiting your move’ and let me move just fine. I reached it through the search engine, logged myself in and went back through history, and moved.
Um, what are cookies?
Um, do you think maybe if you made a new game thread for Ducky and me it would work?
That just might work.
*quacks* sorry, couldn’t resist. (I’m in a hyper, in-the-mood-for-annoying-other-people state at the moment) I will now leave this thread without saying anything useful.
Another one? Very well, here goes:

Cat’s Eye and Sequoia: I’ve created new versions of your chess games for you. See if you can move now.
Does someone want to play Turbo or Capablanca chess with me?
*puppy-dog eyes*
Sure, I’ll play Turbo.
Done! Jakob is White.
