August? Blog-ust! Part 3

There should just be time for a third installment, as the monthly random thread celebrates MuseBlog’s fourth anniversary with sundry images from days of yore (and mine).

Now playing: To close the month, selections from the Hare-athon that played out over the Random threads of March 2008 Robert may wish to avert his eyes.

Musestrone Soup, from January 2008. (One of Lady B.’s personal favorites.)

An assortment of Muses, hot and cold.

So my laptop broke and I’m using the desktop, which is really slow.

But on the upside, I got to see the new planetarium show at the Museum of Natural History, and I met a nice lady who works at the Challenger Center.

It was! The show’s all about stars and how they die and are born, and the effects are really great! I also got to see the Big Bang Walk exhibit, which I never had the chance to do before, and there was this photo exhibition of understated photos from the moon that some artist had picked out and blown up to be really big, with some retouching, including some of Earth eclipsing the sun while the spacecraft was outbound.

Also, we got to visit the Hall of Planet Earth, where they have these rock chimneys from the deep ocean where tube worms and vent crabs and other really weird creatures live on nutrient that come out of volcanic vents. There was also a big half-globe in the ceiling that shows projections of the Earth turning in space, then shows the different “layers”, the atmosphere, the biosphere (living things), the hydrosphere (water), and the lithosphere (geology).

I wanted to see the meteorites, too, but there wasn’t time.

We got to eat at the Shake Shack, across the street from the dinosaur wing, and we saw the museum’s Time Capsule that’s supposed to be unsealed in 3000. Only 991 years to go!

I saw the meteorites… they weren’t that great. I also saw the minerals and one of the iMax shows (Wild Ocean). Imagine Finding Nemo without Nemo, Marlin and Dory; now imagine it centered around sardines. That was about it. It was rather stupid.

I though everyone already knew they had a relationship…..I mean, remember the robobaby comic? Chad and Aeiou were raising a robobaby together, and allowed Koko to babysit for a day.

  6. The image of Chad dancing with Aeiou first appeared on a thread called “May-hem.” The thread started with the picture of Kokopelli and Mimi pinning up Urania’s hem (get it?) for a May Day ball. (At least Mimi was pinning it; Koko may be undoing her work.) As I recall, Chad and Aeiou continued the dressed-up dancing theme, and then toward the end of the month Mimi appeared, shyly delighted with her girly long dress.

Great, just great. I am officially in a depressed mood. And rather feel like crying, honestly. Apparently I’d been looking forward to my sister coming down to visit for Labor Day weekend more than I’d realized….

Yeah, sorry, background: My sister goes to college in a different state, but one close enough that she could feasibly drive to visit me and spend time with me on a three day weekend. Last year this wouldn’t have worked, as she didn’t have a car. This summer, however, Dad bought her a brand new car because she needed transportation for school stuff.

So, earlier today Mom emailed me, saying my sis called her, she’d been in a car accident. (Don’t worry, she’s not injured) Some [self snipped, I”m thinking very bad things about other person] ran a stop sign and my sis hit their front passenger side door. *insert malicious glee–I can’t help but be happy that their vehicle received damage due to their idiocy* (Oh, the other driver is fine, too, which is good. I don’t care about their car, but that doesn’t mean I wish harm on the person)

So, the front bumper on my sis’s car is partway off, and the grill is popped off, and the hood at least looked (in the pics) like it was shoved up a bit, but maybe it just popped open from the force. I guess the waiting list to get it fixed is like 4 days, or something……

Mom just sent me an email, saying: I would say not expect your sister for labor day. Even if the car is fixed, and it isn’t likely since the repair place has a 4 day waiting list, she shouldn’t be driving the car on a long trip until she is sure they fixed everything.

Yeah, I read that, and quite honestly it had me very close to the verge of tears. I really truly hadn’t realized just how much I was looking forward to having her come and visit me. Oh, geez, I’m getting close to tears again.

Maybe I am homesick……I”m certainly feeling depressed right now.

I am at my sports camp now and am typing away during my one free period today! Thankfully I am in the same cabin as my best friend even though she’s doing mostly field hockey and I’m doing mostly soccer. (Last year I was stuck with a bunch of tennis freaks.) Unfortunately I’m exhausted right now because I didn’t get to bed until really late last night and was up at 6:00 this morning. :( The only bad part about sports camp is waking up so early…and I am definitely NOT a morning person. Here’s my overview of the sports:

Soccer – Same instructor as last year, great guy from England who really knows the sport. We’ve done some great drills and I won the 1 v. 1 contest this morning! I’m paired up with two other great girls for 3 v. 3, so I know we’ll make a great team tomorrow during the tournament. My 11 v. 11 team is ok, but I’m a little worried because a lot of the girls on it haven’t ever played soccer before.

Basketball – This is my first time playing b-ball at this camp and so far it’s been good but not amazing. We’ve got a mix of kids with different abilities so I think that the counselor isn’t sure how to group us.

General fitness – Ok as always. I need to desperately get in shape for soccer season so this is a good way to do it.

I’m having tons of fun! :)

    Random musings……

I just woke up from a delicious nap, during which I dreamed that I was…..napping in my dorm room. Seems to be the only thing I dream and remember when napping in my dorm room. The fact that my first nap back at school has come this early does not really bode well for the rest of the year. I need to train my roomie–she seems completely incapable of even trying to be quiet when she gets up in the morning for her 8 o’clocks. Not like last year’s roomie, she was perfect.

I’ve officially decided the cost of living really is higher in AK. Somethign that I sort of knew (duh, the give residents a PFD because of that fact, or at least that’s part of hte reason for it, anyway……), but never really put much thought into. At McDonalds here at school, a 2 cheeseburger extra value meal (#2 meal most places, assuming it’s still on the menu….it’s not really, back home. I mean, at least recently it came back, but not as an actual number meal). OH, sorry, anyway, a 2 cheeseburger extra value meal, large sized (large fries and large soda) here at school is exactly $1.95 cheaper here than back in Alaska. It’s $7.10 back home!!!!!!!!!! I mean, seriously. They’re stealing my money everytime I ate there over the summer. *sniffle* OH, dear, speaking of McDonald’s, I think my #2 meal I had about 4 hours ago is wearing off…..perhaps I better go find some more food. (By the way, I actually like McDonalds, it is one of the best tasting thing here on campus. It, and Subway.)

No, no, not at all. Don’t you see, his mother’s dead, his money wasted, his livelihood burned, and the object of his affections has rejected him forever. That’s not the end.
Following this horrible discovery, he falls terribly ill and is taken in by a kindly village woman, who nurses him back to health with the aid of her sweet, beautiful daughter. During his convalescent period, he has many long talks with the daughter, who falls madly in love with him, but he is still bitter about the super model and obsessed with his mother’s murder, and fails to notice her feelings, much less return them. On recovering fully, he thanks his benefactors and declares his intention to find his mother’s killer. The daughter entreats him to stay, but he says that he cannot, he must avenge the murder of the woman who did so much for him, and received so few thanks in return. He bids farewell to the village where he spent his happy childhood days and strides out into the world.
Soon, however, he forgets his quest, and on acquiring a sum of money, he settles in the city and proceeds to become very rich, somehow–probably because he’s so hardworking–and soon finds himself in the highest of society. As he climbs, he finds himself thinking more and more of the kind women who nursed him through his illness, and has almost made up his mind to return to the village and marry the daughter, when he meets the Italian supermodel and forgets all else. She does not recognize him as the awkward farm boy of so long ago, and they get on very well. He proposes to her again, and she accepts. He is deliriously happy (delirious…kind of like when he was sick in the village…which brings us back to the daughter…but she has definitely forgotten all about me, right?), unfortunately, he wakes up on night before the wedding to find that his bride is holding a knife to his throat. All is revealed. The farm boy’s grandfather was suspected of murdering the Italian supermodel’s grandfather when they (the grandfathers) were fairly young, and fled Italy soon after, only proving his guilt to the family of the deceased. The Italian supermodel grew up determined to avenge her grandfather’s death, and had planned to do so by killing all the supposed murderer’s relatives, but she had failed in her task originally because the farm boy was at the party, speaking Italian and wearing a tuxedo, and she had not suspected him of being who he really was. The farm boy manages to elude her/turn her over to the police, and returns to the village, where he begs the forgiveness of the daughter, marries her, and lives happily ever after.

I really liked the way Rosetta Stone presented the information–it was very intuitive, and allowed you to figure a lot of things out about the language (if you were paying enough attention) before they showed it to you. If I ever decide to actually learn Farsi and have the money lying around to get the program, I think it would really help.

I’m not usually the sort to beg for hugs, but…..I need one right now.

I was uploading pictures from my phone to my computer, when I came across some photos I”d forgotten I’d taken, of two cats I housesat back in June. When not at college, I work at a vet clinic. (part of the reason I was found to housesit, although it turned otu I knew the owner) The one cat had gotten into a cat fight (he was the victim, fyi, not the antagonist), and had had a very nasty abscess, which was why they were desperately in need of ahousesitter while they were gone. Anyways, just two weeks ago Monday we had to euthanize him, he had continued to get beat up and develop serious abscesses throughout the summer, and then the night before we euthanized him, had gotten a clot that left his back end paralyzed (possibly/probably related). So, I was working at the time, and I was holding him, and he is just one of the sweetest cats imaginable. And I never cry when we euthanize an animal, in fact, to be quite coldly, brutally honest, if the owner isn’t there for me to see in pain, it doesn’t hardly affect me (callous, but true). But the tech doing it (my boss) and me were both in tears. And the rest of that last hour of work, I was on the verge of tears constantly, and cried myself to sleep that night. And now, seeing those pictures, of him snuggling with his brother, giving him a bath, it’s brought it all back. I am, quite honestly, sobbing my heart out, and have been this entire post. How much of it is actually due to pain over his death, how much just homesickness, lack of sleep, etc, I don’t know. But I really, really need a hug.

The family who owned this cat thought that the neighbor’s cat had gotten their cat pregnant so this kid goes out and shoots the neighbor’s cat to death with a BB gun. My thoughts on the subject are 1) Get your cat fixed as soon as you get it, 2) go talk to your negibors about fixing their cat, 3)don’t go walking into school next monday and say cheerily “I shot my neighbor’s cat” when asked what you did last weekend and 4) Death is not the awnser. *fumes/sobs* Also, one litter of the cat’s kittens was killed because another cat came in through the kitty door and killed them all. *sobs again*.

Today was Dad’s birthday, so we went to Pen-Mar park for the “Everybody’s day” even that was going on there. It was fun, there was dancing (we watched the 50’s group perform), cars (Dad’s Model A club was there) and tons of people picnicing. Christoph and I played on the playground for a bit–they have a merry-go-round, one of those old fashioned push types that one rarely sees on playgrounds these days. *sigh* It’s a real pity too, since they were a staple for me whenever I used to go to playgrounds….hmm, now I feel old…
Anyway, it was fun. I even went down the tube slide and didn’t get stuck, thankfully. There’s nothing more fun than playing on a playground when you’re “too old” or “too big” for them. But it’s no fun by yourself, so it was good to have Christoph to hang out with, he’s pretty cool for an 11 year old. *realizes that probably a good bunch of Musers are 11* Not to offend any 11 year olds or anything…… ;)
We were right on the Appalachian trail, so we were joking that we’d go to Georgia, but then turned around because I was so foolish and hadn’t worn the proper shoes (not to mention a skirt too).

And Dad let me drive the Model A home from the fruit stand….I didn’t kill anyone or wreck any vehicles, so it’s all good, but that was a most interesting ride! I stalled out several times before getting out of the parking lot, and then a few more times on the road, got honked at once and bucked all the way up the driveway. It was marvelous. Nothing like driving a truck when you can’t reach the blasted pedals! The seat is all slouchy, and I had to use my toes to reach them, and then the gas pedal is this little round thing that is rather hard to get even pressure on….not to mention that each tiny movement of the wheel made me swerve around the road like a drunkard……it was exciting.

That is, assuming I’m cool on here, which given the number of ecstatic greetings I received up on my return, you guys certainly seem to think me fairly cool. In real life I am very shy, dont’ really have any friends, and am madly into Harry Potter. Oh, wait, the latter is true on MB, too.

We should meet. *nods* Uh huh. Because it’s completely possible and not at all out of the way for both of us. We are both also free for the next few years. Nothing at all in both of our schedules. How do I know this? I definitely also possess the power to see into the future. All of these things are true.

I’m on central time, as I’m back at school. Although, I was considering going to be before too long, as I’ve given up hope up my roommate turning up anytime soon (she went home for the weekend)…

And I wouldn’t have gained back the 10 pounds I lost during my first year of college, either…..

I know I really ought to do more exercise, for various reasons, but….at least this past summer, I felt especially little like doing anything, as 5 out of 7 days I was exhausted from work, and the remaining two days I just felt like sleeping until noon, and then doing absolutely nothing the rest of the day…..

It was kind of humourous, really – I though I’d missed and it was flying again, but it was just the recoil from being hit. The fly’s dead. The food is safe. I feel like a hero.

Bad news first, so you can recover-

Bad: I had to leave Cross Country practice early to go to the dermatologist. I used too much toilet paper in the waiting room bathroom and clogged the toilet by accident. Then, when I got into the office and my mom told the doctor that we were there to fix my facial acne, she looked at her chart and found out it was time for my yearly full-body mole check, which meant I had to strip to my underpants and a paper gown and have her poke around all over me wearing rubber gloves looking for moles. Not fun.

Good: I ran a mile to the beach at Cross Country practice and my dad made rice with cheese for lunch using a new recipe that was really tasty. Then we went to the library for four hours and I got to take out a new book on Houdini.

Goodness, a lot of posts have sprung up since I last checked the blog.

Anyway, my news byte of the day:

Exhibit A. I was on the staff of the school literary magazine last year. The other staff members were a sophomore, a bunch of seniors, and a few of my friends (freshmen). Communication trailed off towards the end of the year, and until this summer I didn’t even know if the magazine had been published or not.

Exhibit B. This summer, my fellow freshman staff member and friend told me that in fact the upperclassmen had been meeting for the last week of school to format and publish the magazine, and had failed to tell the underclassmen about it. She found out about this somehow and turned up to work, but they basically told her there was nothing she could do and sent her away.

Exhibit C. Today, I went to ask the staff sponsor what had happened with the magazine last year and where it’s going this year. I found that it was in fact published, and despite being on the staff and having two pieces in the magazine I was not informed of this. The magazines were in “that box over in the corner” and I “[could] take some to sell if [I] want.” I was happy the magazine got published at all, and I bought one. Also, I found out that the sophomore (now junior) H is going to be the editor this year.

Exhibit D. When I got home after marching band, I found that one of my pieces had been listed as written by H, both on the page and in the table of contents. H has no other pieces anywhere in the magazine. This irritates me considerably.

Right now I’m thinking I’ll go ask the staff sponsor about this tomorrow, but I’m not sure where to go from there…
