We’ve just installed a plug-in that’s supposed to make the blog look and behave better on iPhones and other small-screen devices. The documentation says you can toggle between the new and old formats.
We have no idea what it looks like or how well it works, so tell us, please. It’s just an experiment.
Thanks,
The GAPAs
Cool! *checks out on I-pod touch*
It’s okay, but I preferred the old “normal” version because the nested comments don’t show this way: they’re not even behind their original comments which bothers me a bit. For instance, on the random thread, there’s cromwell’s comment about the GAPAs and his group etc…, then there are two by fireh (one about emotions, one about gravatars), then a comment by Rebecca about emotions, then a long one by MF and then comes Robert´s reply to cromwell’s post.
In short, it makes the comments a bit more disorganized.
SFTDP:
But I love the way it says exactly how long ago the comment was posted instead of giving the date/time.
Looks fine. I’ve seen worse implementation of that plugin, but I prefer the normal version for my iPod Touch. Good thing you can toggle!
I was about to ask about that.
I like it. Except the recent comments bar doesn’t show up.
The lack of support for nested comments is problematic, as is the lack of Recent Comments. But somewhat useful anyway, I suppose.
I’ll keep working on it. I didn’t have time enough (i.e., five minutes) to do more than install and activate it today.
Just a moment, I’m off to find my iPhone.
I assume it’s somewhere in my sofa….that’s where it was the other night while I watched 24. Hang on…
Ok, found it.
The blog looks much like it does here on my PC, just scaled down. I’ll have to find the mobile button. Oooh, there it is! I shall poke it. *poke*
Well, it looks good, although, if you have 10 minutes, it could use more color. As for me, though, the lace of recent comments is ok. Good job! I really enjoyed toggling that.
(for you Red vs Blue fanatics ((me, namely)) that would be episode..something. “The Joy of Toggling”)
(5) I’ve added a “Recent Comments” subpage to the “What’s Here” page. That should show up on your portable devices.
Next hurdle: nested comments.
I have actually seen other WP Mobile blogs with nesties, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Also, non-gravatars show as gray heads.
Oh, very nice. I like the way it says how long ago things were posted.
Awwww….. No colors!! I think I will deal with the regular version…. I still think there should be a “bottom of page” button on both….. Then I will be perfectly happy.
I just use Ctrl+End on Windows. I don’t know what might be available for other systems.
I did not know that…. Thank you! However, that does not help me on my iPod….
The way I get around that on the regular site is to select the search bar, and hit “previous”. You’ll be right at the comment field!
Re: Nested comments: It looks on the plugin’s site that nested comments will be supported in the next main release of the software, but I could be entirely mistaken.
Re: Bottom of page: There’s no way to hit ctrl+end on an iPhone. It has neither of those keys available on the keyboard.
I suspected that might be the case, but I also know that a lot of people using computers aren’t aware they can use keyboard shortcuts for navigation, among other things.
Hmmm… I do like the iPod theme, but I can’t seem to be able to find the random button. Could someone help me?
Now that I have looked at this mobile thing more…. The home page confuses me slightly…. I don’t understand the organization pattern…….
As I explored farther I found that when you go to “Recent comments” there are a few posts that aren’t shown on the regular recent comments…. Same thing happens if you bo it on the regular blog…. Granted, the first word of the thread the missing comments are on is “Private:”….
And, with farther exploration, clicking on the link on the computer does not bring me to that thread, though it does on my touch….
That’s the paleo thread.
So only paleos can acess it? What qualifies one as a Paleo?
When someone has been here for at least 6 months they can regester for a “Paleo” account and access the threads.
How do we do so? I have been on the blog for… *dashes off to check* a little more than two years… though it seems like more….
Talk to the beloved GAPAlings.
Having been on the ‘blog for over 6 months.
Third party jinx!
Yes, how do I get there on a Mac? Mypod (bad pun) is out of batteries right now, and I can’t seem to find it. What’s the official name?
Where is ‘there’?
‘There’ as in the Paleo threads – I already had an account, problem solved, found Waldo, but how many threads are there aside from the student lounge?
That’s all.
I am happy because i just found out i have unlimited web on my new phone…. but the mobile view is rather suckish…. at least i can toggle it….
