Happy Moon Day!

On this day (July 20) in 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module landed on the moon in the region called Mare Tranquillitatis, the Sea of Tranquility.

They came in peace for all Musekind.

The picture reminds me very much of Watchmen.

It’s still as great an image as it was last year.

Chad (It would be him, wouldn’t it?), Urania (Ditto) and Feather (Um… well, he looks kinda like an eagle…) reflected in Buzz Aldrin’s visor.

I said before that I thought nobody celebrated 41st anniversaries and what a shame that was. But when the world says “never” and “nobody”, we say “MuseBlog!”

So yes, today we celebrate the anniversary of our first reach beyond our planetary cradle. And the work of so many, in so many small ways, that all added up to One Giant Leap.

Let all Kokonspirators forever remember Project Apollo as an example of how disparate people, working as a team, and united by a common, audacious dream, can change history in a Mostly Harmless fashion.

        “We choose Mostly Harmless-

        We choose Mostly Harmless-

We choose Mostly Harmless for the rest of our lives and to do every related thing not because they are easy- but because they are hard!

Because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills!

Because that challenge is one that we’re willing to accept, one that we are unwilling to postpone, and one that we intend to win!”

Happy Moon Day! Does anyone else know how thefamous line wasn’t really flubbed? The “a” in between “for” and “man” just got lost in the noisy space to Earth communication.

    • So I’ve heard. I was glued to the TV throughout the landing and moonwalk, and I remember thinking, “What was that supposed to mean?” Still, even if the radio signal was to blame, it wouldn’t have happened if Armstrong had enunciated better.

I was Muser-aged at the time of Apollo 11. You probably can’t imagine how exciting it was.

I can’t, but I want to. So very badly.

        • KaiYves: Even so, 41 years later, I have to say that the unmanned missions — all those mappers, rovers, sensors, telescopes, and probes — have discovered a lot more about the universe than astronauts and cosmonauts have. Human expeditions to Jupiter and Saturn never could done anything like what the Galileo and Cassini-Huygens missions have achieved, much more cheaply and with no lives lost. Those missions are exciting, too.

They are indeed, and I’ve been lucky enough to follow some of them all the way through from launch until mission’s end. Just because I think one experience would be singular, doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate others.

    3- Indeed it is!

Apparently my grandfather was involved in the moon landing. He wasn’t important, but he was involved.

Now you know you have to tell me everything about what company he worked for and what they did, yes?

Er… I’m not really sure exactly what he did, and I’m not certain how much I can say without revealing more than I care to reveal about myself anyway.
