    • After White’s 8th move, the knight was pinned (because White couldn’t move it without losing the queen). But Black’s 12th move was a fork: a move that attacks two pieces at once, so that one of them can be captured on the next move. You can use “pin” and “fork” as verbs, too: Black’s knight forked the king and the rook.
