How can you draw in chess?

    • In tournament chess, there are five ways I can think of offhand:

      1. Both players agree to a draw. (Our chess software includes a button for offering and accepting draws.)
      2. A player winds up in what’s called stalemate — unable to move, but not in check.
      3. Neither player has enough pieces to checkmate the other. A king plus a bishop or knight alone can’t checkmate another king. A king plus a queen or rook can. So can a king plus two bishops, or a king plus a bishop and a knight (though the latter is hard). A king and two knights can checkmate a lone king but can’t force checkmate, I think.
      4. If the same position recurs three times, the game is drawn.
      5. If 50 moves pass without a capture or a pawn move, the game is drawn.

      Easy.

      1. Set up the game board.
      2. Acquire Magic Marker.
      3. Have fun!

Sorry for going so long without moving; I was busy on vacation.

  5. Bibliophile says:

WHY DID I JUST DO THAT. 2 silly mistakes in a row, gah. I don’t normally do that, I promise… I didn’t want to mention it until afterward because I was hoping you’d assume it was a plot or something and stay away, but it didn’t work.

*has made a bunch of silly mistakes already as well* *hasn’t wanted to reply for fear of noticement but oh well, they’re over now*

Ooh, new Chess Games in Progress bar is really helpful! I tend to forget about games. Thank you!

  7. Bibliophile says:

No!! That wasn’t even recklessness carelessness, or lack of though like my other bad moves; I misclicked! Oh, well…

  8. Bibliophile says:

7.1.2: 32.Bxe7 was a misclicking, so that one and the ones after it would be erased.
7.1.1: …I am? I really should have noticed that… *facepalm*

Very sorry, Bibli, but I’m going to be gone (sailing,) for about a week. Apologies for putting our chess game on hold. (On the other hand, this means you have a week to ponder your move and defeat me…oh dear.)

    • Bibliophile says:

It’s alright; have fun! I won’t spend a week pondering it for fairness’ sake, but if we’re not done by the time I go to summer camp, I’ll expect you to do likewise… We could just both spend a week pondering, but that wouldn’t really be fair because I’d get to do it first.

Sorry, I went to camp, and we weren’t allowed Internet. I mentioned it earlier, but I didn’ mention when. Anyway, it won’t happen again.

Hey Bibli, just letting you know that I’m leaving on Monday for a trip. I’ll be back on Saturday but I’m having some friends over for my birthday then so I probably won’t be able to post until the 22nd, but then that’s my actual birthday so my parents and I may go somewhere; I might not be able to move then. Um, actually, we may got to Cape Cod for a few days after that, so I might not be able to move until the…27th? I may be able to move before then but I’m not entirely sure, so I figured I should warn you just in case, as my parents and I will be extremely busy packing tomorrow.

Feel free to use this time to ponder, as my not-pondering debt is all used up. ;) (Besides, you have an accidental castle to figure out!)

She could possibly win with only a bishop and some pawns and a king, but I highly doubt I could with just some pawns and a king, even if she did lose her queen. I wasn’t sure whether she’d take my rook if it meant losing her queen, but I didn’t want to risk it. I considered it, though.
