    I’m homeschooled!
1-I think the exact laws vary depending on states, but you definitely don’t in CA, I don’t think you do anywhere…
I don’t study any standard curriculum. This year I’m doing two AP classes, European History and Human Geography, online through an organization that offers a lot of AP homeschool onlin classes…I’m doing writing online through a different site with writing classes for homeschoolers, Spanish I’m self-studying with a variety of different materials, mostly online, math i’m doing with soething called thinkwell where I watch little video lecture things then do problems online, and biology I’m doing through some sort of online open access course.

I haven’t always done so much online, but now that I’m in 9th grade and doing APs and such that’s the easiest way for homeschoolers to do it….

And to answer a question which I know will be asked: Yes, I do socialize.

I’m homeschooled. Always have been. Part of me LOVES being homeschooled and part of me wishes I went to public school. But I have lots of friends and plenty of socializing…sometimes it’s just hard to get my work done. It’s so easy to become lazy when at home. And it doesn’t help that the computer is right there staring at you!

  9. emmatheduck says:

5-Okay, there’s another common misconception about homeschooling that needs to be cleared up.

Homeschooling does NOT necessarily mean that you’re sitting with your parents all day, having them teach you exactly the way a schoolteacher would except that it’s one-on-one. It may be like that in some cases (there are many different ways to homeschool) but certainly not all. It was like that when I was younger, but for several years now Ive spent most of my schooling time alone in my room, self-studying from books and such or taking online classes.

7-you ain’t homeschooled any more….come to think of it, neither am i….why am i posting?
well, i was homeschooled all of my life, so i have a slight expertise on the subject. one thing, its fun. you don’t have to have a set pace of study, you can jump in leaps and spurts from one subject to another, but your social life is limited as you don’t hang out with kids your age all day. there are goods and bads to both systems.

  16. emmatheduck says:

10-I’m only in 9th grade, and i’ve been doing almost all of it by myself for quite a few years now.

Now, as to my own answers to the questions shadowkat predicted….
I get up at 7 every morning and start schoolwork around 8, so not sleeping in, but I think that’s later than a lot of schoolkids get up (correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t know that much more about regular school than you schoolkids do about homeschooling)
And no, I don’t stay in pajamas all day. Only until about lunchtime ;-)

  17. Lady Cinnamon Moon of Orange says:

9: Totally. I’m in 9th grade as well and I do a LOT of my school on my own and have been for years. I hardly spend any time with my mom doing school!

17: I do school when I am sick because I really don’t like getting behind. If I am really sick (like too sick to function correctly) then, no, I most certainly do not do school. If I’m not going to get anything out of it, why do it? I think my mom usually leaves it up to me, but if I’m not really sick, she’ll tell me to do school.

19: Mmm, yeah. I feel so bad for all public schoolers who have to eat caffeteria food. Ick.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  21. Elizabeth says:

our cafeteria food isn’t all that bad, and it’s nice to have a complete lunch one day that doesn’t include the food thet you’d had for lunch for the past 3 days… I think the worst part about public school is being in the “dummy classes” where you have to wait for the others to understand before you go on, but this year I’m in 3 advanced core classes so thet is more or less cleared up.

I definately like public school, I used to go to a tiny catholic school and I didn’t mind it then because I didn’t know anything different, but when I went to public school, I really started to like school. The teachers are either really fun or you make fun of them with other kids (I know it’s mean but it’s a good way to get to know someone you don’t already know… “hey, isn’t Oakleaf the worst teacher ever?”)
    exactly…

If I was home schooled I would probably be an antisocial freak. I live on a main road and the nearest person is a long walk away and the other nearest person is a guy who wouldn’t talk to me anyway. I’m in ninth grade and am in all of the ap classes i can be in. Last year I skipped lunch so I could take all the classes i wanted to. That took a bit of work and met a lot of opposition. NOBODY had even considered it before! School food is OK this year. It’s not cold or so I’ve been told. I bring food.

The table I’m at is very strange. Most of the people eat (5min) and then study, do homework, sleep, or goof off. The goofing off however can get pretty interesting. I have started wearing a largish hat to school. It got used as a Frisbee.

I have also started started experimenting in identity. Hence the hat and weird music (everything from bach to greenday. Really)
And the fauxhawk. My few friends think I’m crazy

    Re: food
I basically get home food at school because I bring lunch. It’s usually and sandwich, and other miscellaneous things. I buy lunch occasionally, but most of the time it’s gross. (The last time I bought lunch, it was a chicken patty. Or so it claimed.) Ick.
23- Yes you are. But aren’t we all. And yes, I was wondering about the hat.

Ha, antisocial freaks. I’m not–quite. I have friends, but I sort of blend into the background and I was so suspicious about the people who decded, seemingly arbatrarily, that they wanted to be my friend, that I’ve been rather cool towards them. But I have friends, a lot more than I had when I was homeschooled.

I sort of miss being homeschooled. I don’t think about it a lot, but when I do I miss it. It was a laid-back sort of life. *sighs wistfully*

27- yeah, there was a girl that came to our school after being homeschooled and everyone was trying to be nice and her friend and all, I think it sorta overwhelmed her. I was not fond of school this morning because I had to get up and I was SO TIRED, but now that I’ve missed the bus once I feel like it will happen again if I’m not careful so I’ve set my alarm clock even earlier. *yawn* I don’t like PE, but whatever.

  33. Elizabeth says:

The thing about public school is that, of the people that work there, there are always the few that choose to teach because they really enjoy doing it and do it well and make kids want to be there. I think having just a few teachers like that make the school day a lot better. I’m not saying some parents don’t enjoy teaching, but you don’t get all the different styles of teaching and when you get older and teach yourself like some people had been saying I can’t imagine it’s as fun as sitting in a class with15 others and a teacher where everyone is making jokes and laughing and still learning as much if not more than if they were just sitting quietly reading and taking tests and all.
I once saw a quote and it said (paraphrased) if you can get people laughing, they are listening, and when they are listening, you can tell them almost anything.
That’s how it goes in school. The kids that struggle want to listen in a good class and therefore they do better. They get peer pressure to do better and support from many other people.
There’s nothing wrong with homeschooling, but I think the actual learning process would be more enjoyable in a public school with good teachers.

  34. MissSwann2223 says:

OK, when i wuz in 2nd grade, my teacher stinked. The kids in my class stinked, and it was really ironic, cuz my school was like 1 uv da best in the state or something. i was really smart(not 2 brag), and they weren’t challenging me enough. I started getting sick, having nightmares, and crying before i got on da bus. My mum homeskooled moi, and VIOLA! My life rocked again! I met my BFF in a homeschool co-op, and we still talk every day and see each other nonstop on weekends even though she lives 19 miles away or something. My mom challenged me and i still got social expiriences. Im going back 2 school 4 6th grade (aka, this year) but im being taken out again until hi school. But, because i was homeschooled, i am the smartest kid in the school (all 500 of them voted, and i was almost unanimous, not 2 brag) and I won the spelling bee 3 x in a row. Seriously, my advice, get out of school and be homeschooled! It rox!

  36. Alice is talking in third person because she's bored says:

34- Alice wants very badly to proofread that post.

Alice thinks that homeschooling is better if you live somewhere where there are kids and if you are an outgoing person. If you are not an outgoing person and do not make friends easily (like Alice), then schooling is good to people-watch and because there is at least one person in a public school who will initiate a conversation/friendship themselves, thus making you less shy. Alice also thinks that she will learn social skills that she could not learn if she was homeschooled.

All Alice’s advocation of school is because she likes having interesting conversations with peers. That is why she likes MB, too. :)

Most of my teachers talk too much. Especially my bio teacher, Mrs. M. She just keeps rambling on after assigning you a worksheet that will be homework if you don’t finish. We start at eight and go to four or later, but the frequent snacks take a little time out of the day.

I usually am in normal clothes before school, but in the bitter cold months sometimes it isn’t appealing to get a cold pair of pants and a shirt out of the drawer. w00t cool thread. I’m in public school…there are definitely some good things about public school, with the friends and the cool teachers and stuff, but yeah the food is crappy (though the pizza and chicken tenders can be ok) and waking up at 6 annoys me XD.

The worst part, I think, is being stuck in classes where everyone else moves SO FREAKING SLOWLY THROUGH THE CURRICULUM. Or when the teachers are stupid, “Go look in the textbook!” types.

I have had some AWESOME teachers who really knew how to reach kids, and some great classes (me loving to learn and all). Overall, I like public school. I don’t think I would have done so well in homeschool, because I never would have learned how not to be shy. I had my nose in a book most of the time from preschool to 6th grade, unless I was daydreaming. I did make friends though, and I remember playing alot. X) still friends with a lot of them.

36- Exactly! I’m not sure if I would have developed social skills.

My friend (lol not just friend)(who I met this year) was homeschooled until this year, but I certainly wouldn’t have known if he hadn’t told me. He did a bunch with the middle school in his neighborhood (like being in their band, I think) and boyscouts.

OMG I just realized…if I was homeschooled, I would have missed BAND!!! *horror* Maybe I could have joined other schools’ band like he did, but still.

    This is very interesting. =D

I didn’t learn social skills at all. If Brenda and Lauren hadn’t found me that first day, I’d be pretty much friendless. Well, not quite. I’d probably have quite a few friends, but for a long time I would have been friendless.

One interesting thing I’ve learned from school is that there is no “normal”. I used to think there was. But now I know that no one is normal, because they all have their quirks. So there really isn’t such a thing as normal, is there?

    84. I have always been homeschooled, and I’m a sophmore in high school. I like homeschooling because I get to know, actually know, my siblings. I can tell my siblings anything, and they know that they can tell me anything. I go to a homeshool co-op two days a week from 8:40 am until 4:30 pm, and on those days I miss my family so much. That sounds like I’m super shy or something, but actually I’m very outgoing, and have several best friends (outside of my family!). I definitly think that if we weren’t homeschooled my family wouldn’t be so close. We aren’t perfect and, yes, we do fight, but some how we can see that after a while it’s more worth it to be friends then to win an argument. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me! I’d love to talk about my experience as a homeschooler! I don’t mind being cited at all!

I think it doesn’t matter as much how much time you spend with people, but more how you spend it. For example, in public school you aren’t visiting and having a good time with all your friends, you’re doing your work. (Or at least supposed to be.) When you get together with your friends now and then and really visit and have a good time it counts much more.

A lot of my parent’s friends are my friends as well, even though they’re boring adults….(sorry GAPAs, I’m just kidding!)

104- i agree wholeheartedly. everyone here is so open and nice and SPEAKS IN COMPLETE SENTENCES! it seems that 99% of the people i meet in real life are, at one point or another, giving me the “woah, you’re crazy,” look. i have never fit in at school, everyone is so immature, and i can never have a civilized conversation with anyone. thus far, i have met one, only one, person with whom i can have a deep, satisfying conversation with (of course we have to wait until we’re alone to have one of the said conversations so no one else is around to give us funny looks and think we’re strange).

by the time i got to sixth grade i was thinking violent thoughts, and was taken out of the public school i went to. that’s when i started getting homeschooled. i would present to you a novel about the blissful times of homeschooling, but i haven’t the time, so i will fast forward a bit:
i really wanted to continue homeschooling, but alas! i found myself accepted into one of the top schools in the united states! i couldn’t miss this opportunity, so i gave up homeschooling *sniffle* and entered (SNIP), where I found myself void of free time, constantly kept occupied by the excessive amount of homework the teachers insist on giving.
but there is always the bright side. this new school is where i met the one person with whom i can have conversations, and i’ve made friends!

still, sometimes i find myself distressed because there is only one person who understands me, or at least accepts the fact that i act differently.

wow, that was long. whew..i shall conclude by saying: i, for one, loved being homeschooled, but i can understand why it wouldn’t work for some people. it annoys me when people say things like..here i’ll give you an example:

other person: did you see american idol last night?
me: no, i don’t watch tv.
other person: WHAT?!?! YOU DON’T WATCH TV?! HOW DO YOU LIVE?!

that was a silly example but it applies to everything, pretty much. people should just accept that others may do things differently, and that works for them, just because you wouldn’t do it that way doesn’t mean the other person is poor and deprived. so, if someone is homeschooled, that must mean it works for them, so leave it be.

i’m not sure what i’m talking about anymore, THIS POST IS SO LONG I MUST END IT NOW!!

i apologize sincerely for going on and on and probably boring a lot of you, i wonder if any of you actually read the whole thing, and i wonder if it had anything to do with homeschooling.

I say I’m homeschooled, and they say “yes, but what grade would you be in?” It really bugs me how in-the-box people are…. And I mean , I live in an area where people do some stuff that’s much weirder than homeschooling (painting their pickup truck bright pink and stenciling two-foot-high flowers all over it, for example)…..
And then when I tell them I’m in seventh grade, what do they say? I can say it along with them by this time, every single person I meet says it…… “Wow, you’re so tall!” Because I’m really tall for my age, I think most people I meet think I’m fourteen or so, and they feel like they can talk to me, but when I tell them I’m twelve they immediately put me in the category of ‘in seventh grade, not interested in anything but movie stars and how to get out of the next homework assignment’….. Ignore the fact that I don’t go to school, I don’t have a TV, I never watch movies (I’ve seen three movies in my life: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (my parents rented it as a ‘novel experience’ when I was 8); something by Miyazaki I watched at a friend’s house without permission; and The Water Horse, which was the in-flight movie when we flew back from Florida this spring.
