Muse Academy Halloween Ball — Planning Thread

Yikes! Where has the time gone? We’d better start planning this right away!

As always, Muse Academy events and students must adhere to physical laws and contemporary technology. No antigravity, perpetual motion, or magic spells, please! (Wungs, however, are not only permitted but obligatory.)

Here’s last year’s ball for reference.

  1. I think I’m in the mood for an old-fashioned haunted house Halloween party theme, rife with cobwebs and bats in the attic and bobbing for apples, in an empty barn, with remnants of straw in the corners of the floor. The chilly wind would leak in through the old barn door, and the dusty old stairs to the upper level would creak with every step. The food would be homey and full of autumn spices, the lighting would be warm but flickery, and everyone’s allergies towards hay would have miraculously disappeared for the evening. As the night matured, the full moon would start to peek through the window in the hayloft and mayhaps the old ghost would let his presence be known.

Hm. This would be easier to describe if everyone had spent a fair amount of time in old barns.

    1. I like this idea, but do you mean a scary haunted house or a benign, homey one (if that makes any sense)? This post makes me think you mean the latter.

      1. The museum kind of haunted- nothing is stalking, but there’s the chance that history might drop by at any moment for a chat.

    1. And all the nasty insides replaced with interior decorations worthy of an old barn… Although, to fit us all in, the pumpkin will have to bear a striking resemblance to Hagrid’s…

          1. …Cake. How could I do that. I know the rule, honestly; I wasn’t thinking. Cake! [insert embarrassed emoticon I don’t know how to create]
You don’t know the family’s extinct in the male line, though; he may have married Madam Maxime by now. She could help him with the gardening.

  2. Come on, people! We need to plan! Of the two ideas for themes posted, mine seems to have more support, so unless someone has a better idea, I say we go with it for the sake of time.

    We need:
    -Food
    -Drink
    -Decorations
    -Activities

And each person needs a costume, since it is traditionally a masked ball. For the avatar problem, you can either A. purposely misspell your email address on the Halloween Ball thread, or B. create a new email address for that thread and assign a new Gravatar to it.

      1. And hot spiced apple cider. *drools* Also, we should have pumpkin and pecan pie. For a main dish, acorn squash.

    1. We can certainly have lots of pumpkins in the old barn, preferably sitting in straw.

Or maybe the rooftop garden could be themed like a pumpkin patch “outside” the barn?

          1. Oooh, yes! Maybe we could each bring one decorated however we wish and add them to a display, a bit like the Holiday Gift Tree?

            1. How would that work? Would we describe how it would feel tactilely and leave people to guess what it must look like until afterward?

              1. No, we come in, either masked or unmasked, and place it on the display, and in the main party thread, people stop to admire the display and comment on their favorites.

  3. 1–Piggy: I’ve spent a fair amount of time in various farm outbuildings (not just barns), and I know exactly what you mean. Also, I like it!

3–Piggy–Food: And we mustn’t forget cranberry things, or chocolate! Mushrooms and squash and sage all make me think of fall…though maybe not all together.

Re: Jack o’ lanterns: That sounds fun!

Bibliophile on the subject of jack o’ lanterns: I don’t think Kai meant that the lanterns would be secret, as the holiday gifts are. I think she just meant that a thread for describing them might be a good idea. I, personally, think that it would be fine to describe them on Rooftop Garden, where they would be left.

    3.4–Agrrrfishi: Absolutely!

    1. Kai (5)- Good, but definitely add hot chocolate to the drinks. I’d say a big roast turkey would be a good addition as well, as well as various types of squash.

      Activities:
      -Bobbing for apples
-Pumpkin patch instead of rooftop garden (complete with carving of jack ‘o lanterns)
      -Dancing (obviously)
      -Bonfire
      -Telling ghost stories?

Decorations should be pretty self-explanatory. It’s a Halloween dance in a barn, use your imagination.

I guess we’re more or less set for–*checks clock*–tomorrow. Get your costumes ready, everyone.
