After multiple guesses, some of them very close, let me tell you what I look like now.
– My hair now has lovely dark purple highlights, cut short to a few inches below the ear. It falls in front of my face a lot.
– I have contacts.
– I wear small earrings, as dangly or big ones get in the way of the cello.
– I wear a lot of close-fitting black shirts. I also wear a lot of bright-colored polos.
– When it’s warm enough outside, I’ll wear a tank and a light overshirt.
– I prefer jeans and cargo pants. However, I love wearing skirts over jeans, esp handkercheif or mini skirts.
– I like dressing as a “fashionable hobo” (as my friends call it), wearing fingerless gloves and XL flannel shirts.
– I don’t wear heavy makeup, and only maybe apply some light eye liner, to add a “dramatic” effect, and some chapstick.

Short is wrong. Skinny is right. I never wear my hair in a ponytail (too time-consuming, but I would if I had time – actually, I think I’ll wear one to day, good idea), and I do have brown hair, but darker that you think. I prefer to wear baggy jeans/cargo pants but also have a pair of nice white pants. I do not own any purple shirts but do wear a lot of black shirts. Most of my clothes are totally unfashionable. 142~ Much as I try to imagine a person, I always get the same picture when I think of you. It is of a smal table, but you don’t really se that it’s a table, on it is a lace doily, with an old looking picture on it, Civil War era, of a soldier in a silver frame that has some decoration, but not much. Also on the doily is a faded rose, a rather dusty pink, in the soft light.
I can’t explain it, but the whole scene always look rather sad and quiet, and that’s how I always imagine you, even though I know that can’t possibly be what you look like!

So here goes nothing: on the pale side, so your skin is sort of caramel-colored. Pretty short and thin, with shoulder-length wavy black hair. Big dark eyes and a slightly pointed nose. Your clothes aren’t ostentatious but not completely dull either.

I have always pictured Zinc with wacky brown hair, medium length. I don’t know why (though I definitely don’t see blond). And it’s funny that you say that, Zinc, (I just read 269) because I also picture you with brilliant green eyes. And yeah, green eyes are really rare – I’ve met very few people with truly green eyes. They’re also quite common on Mary Sues, for the exact same reason. Not that I think of you as at all cliche-ish.
ZVX has absolutely no image to me. Of course, most people don’t, I’m not a visual person. I usually see people that I read (even in books) as sort of abstract – it’s hard to describe.
Armada has brown, about shoulder-length brown hair, with a reddish shine sort of thing. Kinda weird. I don’t have anything else except long hands. Yeah, I know.

(284) THF: For me, reading is also mostly about words rather than pictures. Maybe that’s why I don’t mind huge blocks of text in which nothing much happens: they don’t seem dull, because much of what I’m experiencing is the language. On the other hand, it gives me a very low tolerance for bad writing. A clunky, clattery style just grates on me.
On the subject of this thread, it’s also hard for me to describe people in words or to recognize them from descriptions that I hear or read. I suspect that lack of visual imagination is more common than most people realize.
(284, 288) Oddly enough, that’s true for me as well. Language is its own medium when I read. If anything, I might see words typing into being or sense a flow of color or sound but I don’t see pictures and have difficulty forming them even when I try. Like Robert my tolerance for bad writing is very low. In fact, I can’t even comprehend its meaning without strenuous effort. It just doesn’t stick to my brain.
Writing is something else again. Pictures in my head often lead to writing, although there is not necessarily a direct correspondence between the two, especially as the images generally show up as abstract sculptures rather than realistic tableaux.
When I paint, my mind fills up with words.
When I listen to music, my mind fills up with images.
Nor do I really see images of the people on this blog — even those I’ve met — unless I stop and make a deliberate effort. Yet there must be some below-consciousness sense because when I meet any of you or see photos, I’ll think, that’s exactly what I imagined or not at all what I imagined — yet strictly speaking, I didn’t imagine anything at all.

284, 288, etc. — what do you mean by “see pictures when you read”? Do you mean, for example, if someone said, “The duck swims in the pond,” you would, in your mind, actually see a duck swimming in a pond?
I’ve always had trouble figuring out what bloggers look like. I just recognize them by their name, and whenever I read someone’s post, I know it’s them because I their name is at the top…but I dont actually see that person. Even after I’ve met someone, I don’t associate their comments with images. Even THF — I read her comments and I know she wrote them, but there are no images.
Is that what most people do?
293–Yeah, that was pretty much what I meant when I first commented about that in post 283 (to which THF was replying in 284, and whom Robert and Rebecca ultimately forgot about, only responding to THF’s post–I thought that was rather amusing, coming from our omniscient GAPAs). My sister and Dad both say they see pictures in their minds as they read, and my sis says that is why she has to literally read every word on a page (as in actually speak it in her mind), and is why she is a somewhat slow reader. I am actually kind of jealous–I which I got mental images in my mind to accompany text on a page.

(294) We won’t even pretend to be omniscient, but in this particular case I didn’t responded to THF, not because I forgot about your comment, but because my brain wandered off on a tangent related to the fact that THF has mentioned several times that she’s not a visual person, yet her drawings reveal a good eye. That struck me because I don’t see pictures either, yet art is my chosen field.
What is a visual imagination, then? The more I think about it the more complicated the question becomes.
So your dad and sister see actual pictures? That’s interesting. I asked a guy at work today and he said the same. Somehow I must have always assumed people meant that metaphorically. I feel sort of a like a near-sighted kid discovering that not everyone sees the world in a blur.
Do you and your sister use visual information differently? Do you have trouble following written descriptions of how to make something or, say, the physical layout of a building?
You know, this puts it into perspective a little when teachers say things like “When you picture this paragraph…” or “How do you picture this scene?” English/Language Arts teachers have always placed a big focus on picturing things, and I never understood why until now.
295- David Levithan (a teen book author) came to my school last year and we had a discussion about it. He’s a non-visual reader, and he said there are very few like him. We polled the entire writing department (~75 people), and only three people raised their hands. He gave us the statistic, but didn’t say where he got it.
I, personally, am not a visual reader. When I read a book, I don’t see it as a movie in my head. We had a discussion about this at dinner today. Dad and Jacob (brother) are visual readers, while THF and I are not. I read the words, and I know what it looks like from the language and descriptions — I don’t need to make a picture in my head.
Dad said that sometimes, when he reads things, he only skims the description because he is trying to form the image in his mind, visually, and ignores the text for a little while. He used the example of a house. If the book/whatever other media starts describing a house, he will read the first few words, then start picturing it in his head. He will focus on his picture so much, that the rest of the description doesn’t matter. If he goes back and reads the description again, he notices that he missed crucial details.
Even though I don’t read visually, I have no trouble following written descriptions or layouts, etc. I have no difficulty creating images in my head. I’m a visual learner, too.

But, no, I don’t ahve any problem following description of how to make something/layouts of buildings. I mean, if I read the description of soemting I can–if I really concentrate and consciously try to envision it–get a vague picture in my mind, but only if I focus all of my effort on it. I console myself with the fact that my mom doesnt see pictures, either….although I am jealous of the fact taht my sis/dad do, cuz it just sounds really cool. I don’t know–I guess from Pan’s post, I am just the minority, although it was only within the last few years when I found out that my sis/dad saw pictures. And I always thought they were fairly weird that way, and that it was more normal not to see pictures, until I was watching one of the extras on an HP DVD and Daniel Radcliffe made some comment that when he reads, he sees everything as cartoons, and I realized that it wasn’t just my sis/dad who saw pictures when they read…..

About the seeing/not seeing pictures when reading books: I’m sort of in between, I guess…… I can kinda see each character in my head, but it’s often very vague, and when I read, for example, an action scene, I see the setting but not the actual action.

296 – I was wondering about this as well. You are an artist, and I am working on it, and I have never been a visually oriented person in any way. I am not good at learning things visually, either – maybe it has something to do with migraines – and I have a very good memory for music and lyrics, but not for images.
And apparently you’re not visually oriented either, at least not in this sense. I think that this shows that being more visual doesn’t mean anything for visually artistic ability, it just means that we’re more separate in our ways of finding pictures in images. I think that if we don’t see pictures when we’re reading, it just means that we don’t see it as pictures, we just put things together, it doesn’t change the quality.
Okay that whole thing was absolute babble. It’s kind of funny, actually. Eh, it’s late at night and I can’t really put my thoughts together. I’ll figure it out tomorrow.

On the topic of books, when I read, I sorta don’t really remember any pictures forming in my head, but when I finish it I always just seem to know what I think the character looks like. I usually see the opposite of what the author describes. It could be a sneaky, sly person, and I see a girl with long dark hair, a slightly pointed nose, blue eyes, while the author describes the character as a girl with short light brown hair and brown eyes. Instead of pictures, I see a movie almost. I never remember a movie forming, at the end of a page, I remember seeing it. It’s hard to describe. But I definitely don’t see pictures.

I’m not a terribly visual reader. I usually get an image, but it’s sort of vague and blurry.
What’s weird with me,. as far as being a visual reader: I don’t see pictures when I read a descripion or something, but when I am trying to recall info on a test, or something I read, i can often close my eyes and recall what the page looked like,a nd sometimes specifically like the sentence I needed, that has the answer. Sorta like photographic memory, except not realloy, cuz I dont’ have a picture of everything I’ve ever seen in life.

On Saturday night, they set up an AWESOME arts and crafts area (I made a wizard radio and a wand), there was a cardboard box maze, and Bewitched was playing. And then, two hours after the skill events (so we could have lunch, duh), there were fun events, such as “The Orb of Non- Dryness” “Abracadabra” “Magic Carpet Ride” “The Triwizard Cup” and a whole bunch of others.

I wonder if anyone can guess my heritage (hint for this one: I’m short, my dad makes wine, and I get angry pretty easily but can’t reliably hold a grudge)?

I wear skirts full (you got that right) but as long as I can do without tripping. Most of the time I’m just shlumping around in jeans. I like the boots you gave me, but I’m not sure how much I’d wear them… Oh, any my hear is shorter and not layered, it’s really ugly right now.

My grandma thinks I’m really skinny, my parents say I’m “just right” and I think I fall about in the middle-not scary thin, but I fit into smallish pants.. (I’m wearing a pair that juniors nine right now, and they fit perfectly) however, in my wardrobe I have womens sizes from 2 to 9, different brands.

heh, go ahead and guess my background, some of it might surprise you.
here’s what I look like, in word form:
Round face that makes me look several years younger than I actually am, large but rather regular features- big blue eyes that change color a bit, straight nose that looks better from the front (I hate my profile), thick lips, brown hair that shines gold when the light is right (I used to be blonde) with slight variations in the color, medium light skin tone-not really pale but somewhere in the middle, medium to short height, medium build, thin-ish, fairly active with a little more strength than some of my peers.
With a little sleuthing on MB you can find plenty of pictures.

Um, tesseract, yes, that is really off. I don’t have blond hair, although it is long. I am tall and thin, but my eyes are def. not green. My skin used to be really pale, but now it’s more pale with a pinch of cinnamon and a wild rose petal. My eyelashes are really long. I have thick-ish eyebrows that meet in the middle, but you can’t see that they do. I don’t have prominent freckles but there is a hint of freckles. The only kind of makeup I wear is lip gloss, and I don’t wear nail polish. Right now I’m wearing jeans and an oversize Wellesley College sweatshirt with Ped socks. Oh, and I wear glasses. I WEAR GLASSES!! Gosh, no one mentions glasses.

343-I’m not skinny at all…. But for some reason almost everyone I know is, or they’re the well-muscled type of not skinny. I feel weird when I hang out with my friends, because everyone, even the people who are two years older than me, are at least twenty pounds lighter than I am.

385- Never seen or read LOTR, so you don’t look mystical or elfin or whatever to me. I think you have medium-length, brownish hair, beige-y skin, and smaller, muddy brown eyes. A nose that you don’t like but really isn’t that bad, wide mouth, really good eyebrows. Normal height, normal weight, with a confident posture. Don’t really care much about how you look, but sort of pretty from a certain angle nonetheless.
I would ask you to do me, but I imagine you have seen my picture, so…..

385 – Wow, not far off at all. My hair is straight and brown, though a little longer than shoulder-length, and I used to wear glasses. Now I have contacts, but I still wear my glasses sometimes–this morning, for example. I am medium height, but I really don’t know what color my eyes are. They’re sort of blue-green and some of my friends say they have yellow in them. I wear jeans, though not cutoffs, and t-shirts.
@Luna – Of slight to medium build, willowy but strong, clad in brown capris and a stunningly bright Caribbean-blue…. top (I’m not familiar with women’s clothing, okay?), very severe but mischievous, piercingly November-beach-shale-grey-blue eyes, a relatively angular face with a straight, steep nose and medium sized lips, slight laughter lines, a wide grin, BARELY BARELY wavy-very-straight-really darkish blond hair, small feet which are currently barefoot because I don’t like shoes.
@LadyGaladriel – Either very very tall or very very petite, appearing delicate but used to work, wearing a slightly close-fitting black full body…. ninja-suit-thingie (yes, I am getting outlandish with the clothing, aren’t I?), sparkling brown eyes, a smooth, friendly face, likable features, very slight dimples and a small but infectuous smile, wavy raven-black hair, and a good complexion.

392–Hmmmm. Yeah, pretty good description overall–probalby qualify as slight to medium build (I am thin, but not anorexicly so–there are plenty kids thinner); not particularly strong, and not entirely sure what fits the description of “willowy but strong”
; never worn capris; as far as tops go [top is a perfectly acceptable term–blouse/shirt also works]; not sure about the severer part, and not entirely sure on the mischievous part either; I like the description on the eyes–they are a blueish grey/greyish blue; not really sure I would describe my face as angular, but then, it’s not really round either; dunno on the nose either, or the size of the lips…..hm, laughter lines might be nice, dunno if I have them; yeah, wide grin–sometimes; as far as the hair, well, I wish it were slightly wavy, but it is as straight as is possible–and more of a light dirty-blonde as opposed to dark. Normal sized feet, I think–not particularly small–and are currently barefoot, because I am sick of shoes (they kinda smell after being worn almost constantly at school).
But you can see if your mental image matches the real me by looking at the Sept Muserology……although I don’t look the best in those photos, but whatever.

Zinc – Your guess for me is… about halfway there. My hair’s not very long, it’s just a little above my chin. The color is very close though. My eyes are green, and my figure’s not like that at all, but I know that’s just the standard figure. My taste in clothes is a bit different than that too, I go for more comfortable clothes. You got Kitty almost perfectly in terms of clothes and figure (yes, she is that skinny), although her hair’s a bit darker than that and her eyes are brown.

Hmm, there seems to be a conversation going on about seeing pictures in one’s head when they read……
I don’t. When I read I hear it in my head, so clearly that it’s like listening to someone next to me talking. I also barely see (or notice) the printed words, I admire the font (if it’s nice) but I admire it as a separate part, unrelated to the actual reading. When I’m reading I generally don’t pay attention to the visual aspect.
I often have a difficult time actually seeing pictures in my head, usually I try to think “picture” and come up with a description in words. It’s annoying, actually.
When I listen to music (not always as much when I’m actually the one making it) I see moving pictures and feel motion, like walking down a street, swinging on a swing or skipping on a bridge. Some songs I can’t even seem to hear them, because I’m seeing a video in my head, and it all just flows together. Often I have to consciously resist any images that might pop into my head so I can appreciate the song and hear how it goes.
When I try to draw I just get frustrated.
Just a little more on how my twisted up brain works.

I look like cross between Danny Phantom and Jack Frost from The Santa Claus 3. I have a ice-blue jumpsuit with a kaleidoscopic patter of different shades of ice-blue. On the front and back of the top part of my jumpsuit, I have a white symmetrical six-sided snowflake symbol with JF printed [in a sky blue color with a thick black outline] on it, with the J and F touching. I have Ice Blue Eyes. My face otherwise looks like Danny’s, and my hair like Jack Frost (see above). I hereby challenge someone to draw a picture of me and post it here. 449–I always liked being taller than people. When i was your age, it was so enjoyable (in a somewhat cruel way) to tease one of my guy friends mercilessly about the fact that he was significantly shorter than I was. Of course, it’s been several years now since I’ve grown, and at 5’7″, I am significantly shorter than he is–he’s gotta be at least 6 foot.
