Postcards from Muse Academy

Those of you who don’t have time to follow and take part in the role-playing game might still manage to scribble a few lines to the folks back a home. E-mail messages are acceptable too, of course.

    First post.

I’m terribly confused by the description.

Is it… the people who don’t have time to actually play in the game but still want to can write letters to home about their day to day activities?

psh. I NEVER write home from camp. pity.

Yes. Some people have been dropping out of the RPG because it’s too time-coming to keep track of all the interactions. I thought this would give them a way of taking part in the MA world at their own pace.

By the way, the weather at Muse Academy has been terrible:

    South-east Iceland
Gale warning 1624 Sat 02 Feb
Severe gale force 9 veering northerly imminent

Shipping forecast 0015 Sun 03 Feb
Wind East becoming cyclonic 7 to severe gale 9, perhaps storm 10 later.
Sea State Very rough or high.
    Weather Rain or wintry showers.
    Visibility Moderate or poor.

There are disadvantages to an Icelandic location. Some days you just have to batten down the hatches and ride it out. Needless to say, there’s no contact with the mainland at the moment.

    Hi mom and dad,
Whew, the first week here certanily has gone fast. I’ve been having a great time, all the MBers are really nice and the GAPAs are always such fun to be around.
Our science class has been very interesting, and it’s actually making sense now, same as math. Histiry is fun, and Paul give his lectures in Elizabethan english. Fun, but hard to take notes on.
The library is fabulous, Mom, you’d have a heyday and Dad, there’s a good poetry section, too.
Rebecca’s art classes are great fun, even though I still don’t think I’m very good.
Then in ou spare time we visit, do homework and dodge pies. The first few days all the neophytes were continually covered in pie. It was pretty tasty though!

Well, I have to go to my “Planning for world domination” class, I’ll write later. Hugs to both of you and to Circles, ♥ Fern

I think I’ll write from MA as Alice.

    Dear Mother and Daddy,
Muse Academy is SO MUCH FUN! I really feel like I belong, even more than when I’m with the theater kids (of course, being with the theater kids at MA, I feel like I belong twice as much). I know a lot of these kids, and it’s so cool to meet them in person.
Every single class is fun, even math.
Much love and great happiness, Alice.
P.S. Iceland is really cold but still great.

    Dear Jacob,

I know you don’t like school, but you would like Muse Academy. It’s basically like living in a Kokopelli & Company comic. You get to have dessert every day, even if you don’t finish your dinner! You don’t have to go to sleep at 8:00 sharp, and you don’t have to take art class if you don’t want too. You can stay in the library as long as you want, and there aren’t any mean librarians. Yes, you would definitely like it.

    Love, Clara.

    Dear Nak,

I see on the Web that you’ve been blanketed by snow. I hope you’re enjoying it. Here it’s been all lashing rain and cyclonic gales. We’re all safe inside, fortifying ourselves with copious quantities of soup, tea, and cocoa and making our way around campus via the Catacombs (our name for the tunnel network). Classes are proceeding as scheduled, but the roaring of the wind outside is a constant distraction, and everybody is a bit sleep-deprived. The students have been good sports so far, but I hope the weather clears up before cabin fever sets in.

I hear from New Zealand that construction of our Southern Hemisphere campus is proceeding apace. I’ll send more details as they become available.

Stay warm, and build a snowmuse for me!

This is an e-mail to all my best friends, by the way, from Beavo’s perspective.

    Hello all!

First of all, I’d like to express my condolances that I won’t be attending the next few years of public school with you again, I’ve been accepted into a sort of “smart kid’s” private school for the second time. I’ll see you guys during the winter/spring break, and summer too.
Well, I hope you’re having a great time, I sure am. I’ve just gotten my list of classes, you wouldn’t beleive what kind of stuff I have. Really, it’s awesome.
I guess I’ll email you later on updates, and you MUST email me back with your school plans, new buddies, GIRLFRIENDS…
    Anyway. Cya in the winter!

    Dear Andy,
Muse Academy is amazing! I wish it could have been opened before you went to college. You would love it here. If you didn’t like your class you could just invent a new one. You could spend all your time inventing here. The library is huge. It’s like that water city we imagined but it doesn’t really look like it. The people here would be perfect for the water city. You should start building the city so graduates from MA can live there.
I’m glad you had a good time with Val. You should come visit MA on spring break!

    Dear Mom and Dad,
Thank you so much for sending me to MA! At first I wasn’t sure what it would be like, but I’ve made some great new friends (Althea, IBCF, and Raven, just to name a few) and I’ve got some awesome classes. Did you know that almost the entire day is basically electives? It’s way cool! Oh, and I DID take a math class like you asked me too – Geometry – but I actually had to switch INTO it, since they didn’t give us any math classes to start with.

    Dear Mimi,
The first day was very surprising! Muse Academy is not much like Cricket School. I made 2 friends, Althea, and Kai. I got into a little trouble, but not as much as LAST year. Heheh. Anyway people invent a lot of things, and you know how much I love inventing! Can you please send my stuff over? I promise, even though that also got me into trouble I’ll be more careful! So far I haven’t seen Bo yet, but I think he’s my Random Factoids You Probably Won’t Need To Know teacher. Of course I brand my guitars, and harmonica, and I think they have a piano here. Dear Theo,

Don’t you wish you were here! Though I think the lack of baseball would surely dampen your mood, were you to come. But I love it! I’m in Lasley House and they say at the end of the year in Lasley House they give you a copy of Photoshop! A REAL copy! Though you wouldn’t care. But I can’t wait! Last week I started a great new project in Advanced Chemistry. It’s a small synthetic bacterium that I’ll train to spell out words. By putting enough layers of these bacteria on top of each other on my skin, I’ll get a tattoo! But don’t freak out in jealousy, little bro. They disperse with a simple application of rubbing alcohol. My new friend Clara is my lab partner and she’s helping me a ton.

    Dear Mom, Dad, and Christine,
I am really enjoying myself at the Academy. I was nervous at first, but I loved it from the moment the boat landed. The people in Reykjavik are very friendly. Would you believe it, I met some of the original MuseBloggers! The freshmen were escorted to the gates by the Lasley Head of House, Allegra R********, otherwise known as Kiki the Great. Dad, the antechamber is exactly how you described it after you went to the construction site- the murals alone would make it breathtaking, but that dome… !
Then the Muses themselves gave speeches. Urania, Crraw, Bo and Aeiou, with Crraw translating. I was completely in awe.
After that, we all had to take tests to determine our houses. They were a lot longer than the preliminaries I took by mail, but absolutely worth it. I got Spector, just like you did in the old blog days, before the Schism and the Reunion.
Best part of it was, we didn’t even have to go to any classes- just went to the common rooms and got to know each other and the floor plan. We only learned the basics, though. Apparently it’s a tradition for the freshmen to learn about the secret passages on their own. I already found one, though. I checked with one of the older kids, and she said it’s the one called Fzlblt Slip. It comes out in the Baker cheese vaults.
Then we went out to the field and- I’ll have to describe the rest next time I write, because someone’s knocking on the door.
How are you guys doing back in California? Moved everything into the new house yet? Has Christine gotten over her jet lag?
    Love,
    Sebastian

    Dear Medea,

How are you? I was sorry to hear about your missing ear. Could you tell me how you lost it? Perhaps it has ended up over here, everything eventually washes up on these shores. Yesterday we learned what to do in case of a hot pink bunny attack. This has gotten more important over time because the bunnies keep using more advanced technology. Only recently I heard about a crew of bunnies who had built a spaceship shaped like their leader which shot pink lasers at everyone out of its eyes. I think there is no escaping…every day I feel like there is going to be a knock on the door, and an hpb will enter, its eyes flashing…hark! who’s that at the door? Must go investigate! I’ll write to you soon again!

How are things in Ohio? Here in Hyperborea, we’re getting a welcome dose of light and warmth, and the Academy is humming along nicely. Main topic of excited conversation: the May Day Ball, preparations for which are in full swing.

The new pie kwan do class has been a huge hit. Master Lao started the first session with a tour de force, slicing and serving a cloudberry pie in the blink of an eye with his bare hands. Heaven knows how he did it or how many years of practice it takes to achieve that level of skill. I’d love to take a high-speed film of that trick some time.
