I think teachers give kids way to much homework. They encourage us to do extra curricular activities and then pile the homework on so you dont have time to do anything else. And then they give us homework over the weekend so we cant see family or whatever….it stinks. Sorry to be so negative. Im tired.

Homework is The Man’s way of making sure you never have any time to peruse the activity of your choice. I find the whole idea of homework ridiculous. Let’s see: I spend seven, repeat seven, hours at school doing about jack. I learn more from an hour surfing Wikipedia than I do most days of school. After these seven hours, I return home. Does The Man consider that I may want to escape the institutionalized feeling of school? No, The Man thinks I have too much time on my hands and therefore must bring more school home with me.

11- I’m not entirely sure who The Man is, but I strongly suspect he’s taking his orders via intercom from someone who’s locked in a padded cell, considering how insane the curriculum at my school is. For instance, they spend an entire unit on the causes leading up to the American Civil War, then squeeze the final two years of the war into about half a chapter. Also, we just found out that our teacher will be teaching us physics AFTER we’ve been given our STAR tests on it. They wouldn’t stand for that kind of shenanigans at Muse Academy, let me tell you.

If I had less homework what would I do…?
I would ride my bike a lot.
I would have more time for taekwondo, which means I could get certified to teach which means I would get a job that I like and pretty much get paid to go where I go anyway.
When I had that job I would do other stuff like join a flight school because I would have time to go since there is less homework.
When I was finished with that flight school I would have a higher paying and just as fun job as the taekwondo one.

So…less homework=higher paying and more satisfying career.
Exactly the opposite of what The Man wants us to think.

Okay, I’m madder than Hel (Norse pagan goddess! Not a swear!) about cults! My friend, who is positively the salt of the earth, is going through a terrible period in his life right now because his girlfriend (who he actually was in love with) broke up with him because of some freaking cult. Her “discipler” told her that since he wasnae in it, she could no longer be with him. And yes, she did so. Now, I might pause to question whether she thought particularly clearly before making this decision, but I rather think that it’s mostly the cult’s fault. They prey on people. And the cult in particular gets lists of the *wolf whistle* things their recruits have done and if they try to leave, they blackmail them! This just burns me up!

On a completely unrelated note, I’m trying to figure out what kind of sword I want to buy. Should I buy something light and maneuverable, like a rapier, or should I get something with some weight to it, like a basket-hilted claymore?

Unfortunately, it meant that I had to eat matzo and horseradish, but other than that it was good – for the non-ritual part there was brisket and kugel and tsimmis and salad and chocolate covered cherries and candied fruit slices and chocolate cake, and singing the various things was fun – I was able to do twelve in the “who knows one? Hi everyone! Nice to see you again.

We got out of school early due to a bomb threat. I’m really not sure whether or not to take it seriously. I don’t really want our school to blow up, even if no one gets hurt. I’d probably have to transfer elsewhere and I like this school. We have a theater program, and an auditorium, and an enormous science department. So yeah. I hope it doesn’t get bombed. All this makes me feel unsafe.

On the bright side, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival was AMAZING. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. The plays and the field trip in general. Let’s see. Starting at the beginning.
The bus ride down was pretty fun, I spent the first few hours staring out the window or listening to E’s music, and then E and HF and I wrote six-word stories, and then I took a nap, and then we played bus games. It was very amusing, cause JN (teacher) was sitting way in the front of the bus and spent most of the trip sleeping, and all eleven kids were sitting in the last five rows. At one point we all crept up and stood/sat around her waiting for her to wake up and find all the students staring at her, but it didn’t work and we went back to bus games.
Then we got to the hotel, and checked in and everything. I shared a room with A and B. It was shocking how much makeup and hair products they had between them. Then we went swimming, only I didn’t have a swimsuit, so I ended up just swimming in my shorts and shirt. Take my advice, guys, and don’t swim in a long-sleeve shirt.
We had dinner at this strange Chinese place, and I got hum bao, or something that was supposed to be hum bao, but more icky. I gave it to S; he wanted to throw it the ceiling when he got home and see if it stuck.
After that dinner, we headed over to the park. They have this fountain in Ashland, very famous, and on the way up we kids who were new to this were told how good the water was. Well, they were lying. It was gross. But then we went to this huge structure, made out of ropes and stuff, and we climbed all over it. Either E or S or both wanted to play Tag on it, but the rest of us were firmly against that, so we left and went and did skits elsewhere. There were two groups, and each had a few elements of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and one character, and we took those elements and the character and made a skit with the plot given us. I was Helena, and the plot was about kids from our school coming to Ashland to either perform/see a play (the other group did see, we did perform). I won a ten-dollar gift certificate to Fred Meyer’s for the most entertaining actor/actress.
Oh my, I’ve been typing for a very long time, given that I haven’t even got to the plays yet. To make a long story short, we played Hide and Seek in the dark, went back to the hotel where we ate ice cream and watched King Kong, spent a rather miserable night without enough blankets, and got up the next morning to go to an acting workshop. Which was fun. I got to be Titania there. Sort of. When that was done we headed over to the theater and saw Fences.

    Play Review No. 1: Fences
It was really good. Not as good as I hoped, but still good. I was pretty bored with the first act and can’t even remember what happened, but the second was much, MUCH better, and sparked some interesting discussion on the bus. The whole play was very well done, although the plot was sometimes tedious, and the set was STUNNING. God. I think I want to be an OSF techie.

After that, we got to shop a bit and then went back to the hotel. DW, DN, B, A, S, N, and I went to a sushi place that was nearby. Unfortunately, because there were seven of us, it took a REALLY long time to get a table, and then a long time to get food, and then a long time to wait in line so we could pay, and we were late, and B, DN, A, and N went back to the hotel without S, DW, and I, so we ran all the way back and nearly killed ourselves running out in front of a car, and then we were the first people on the bus.

Play Review No. 2: Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter
I didn’t have very high hopes for this play. It’s a play about a woman marine returning from Iraq, wandering off to deal with her problems, all that, and that just didn’t appeal. But it was really funny when it wasn’t being touching, even when it was actually, and I am in love with the theater we saw that one in, which only heightened my enjoyment.

That night we all gathered in the boys’ room again (it was weird how we all gravitated there, since it was the smallest and messiest of all three rooms) and watched Jurassic Park.
The next day we had our backstage tour, which was great. And then we went shopping, or, in my case, looking around and finding nothing I deemed wonderful enough to spend Mom’s money on, and then we saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Play Review No. 3: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
The OSF people seem very fond of taking Shakespeare plays and putting them in non-Shakespeare setting, for example, As You Like It performed as a Western (I didn’t see that one, but they did it). This particular play was performed as a sixties/seventies psychedelic thing. Normally I would shudder at this sort of thing, but it was actually really good, and very fun to watch. Plus it was in the same theater as Fences, and I swear it was unrecognizable. They change the set for every play! Fences was huge and elaborate, and Midsummer was very sparse and versatile. It was great. I had a lot of fun.

After Midsummer HG, A, B, JO, and I waited outside for the actor who played Puck. Last year JN had him come to breakfast, and they wanted to invite him again. I wanted him to come to breakfast as well, of course, but I wasn’t quite as fanatic about it. While we were at it we asked the tour guide (also an actor), the woman who played Helena, and a few other people. They all had prior engagements, and so eventually we left and dispersed to go shopping. I didn’t buy anything this time around, either, and it started snowing of all things, despite the warm air. And then the air got a little colder, and JO, HG, HF, E, and I trooped back to the bus and waited an hour for the rest of the gang to show up. And then we went roller skating, which was lots and lots of fun. I’m very inelegant though. When it come to stopping my technique is to slam into the nearest wall. I only fell down once, trying not to run over HG, who was trying not to run over a little kid. And HG and DN and I did a trio skat, which was lots of fun.
Then we went back to the hotel, and HF, E, DN, N, A, B, and I played cards until midnight. DN took one of our room keys my accident, or something, but he gave it back. Then in the morning (which was very snowy, by the way) A and I woke up and were hungry, so we went to find JN, and then discovered our room key didn’t work. So we tried it in the boys’ door, and it worked, but it didn’t solve our problem, so we had to go bang on our door until B woke up and opened it.

And then we rode back home and played cards and a movie trivia game the whole way. ‘Twas fun.

At my school, eveeryone gets a part. EVEN IF YOU DON’T TRY OUT. They give everybody some part dancing during a song with their class or something, which effectively screws up the play. Okay…this should probably go on the Complaints and Rants thread, but I’ve already posted one long rant there today, so I may as well post it here…

I feel like I’m losing my language. See, I lived in California for 7 years, and from Kindergarten to 4th grade I was in a Duel Immersion Spanish program at my school. Basically, by 3rd or 4th grade I could have been mistaken for a native speaker, since I had grown up learning it.

But now I moved to Washington, and I’m feeling lost. Washington’s Latino/Mexican American population is literally non-existant. So, basically, I don’t know anybody else that speaks Spanish.

So, really, I’m losing my language. Not my first language, of course, but a very close second. I’m forgetting it, and it’s awful. I can remember a lot of words, but I’m forgetting the words for backpack and Wednesday and little stupid stuff like that, that I should know. I’m forgetting the tenses of verbs in Spanish, which my teacher pounded into me in second grade, and where to put the accent, like we learned in third grade. (I remember it faintly, but barely)

It’s horrible. Imagine if you spent 3 or 4 years living in a country where absolutely nobody spoke English. That’s about what it feels like. It’s scary, too.

The funny thing is the way I think about it. I literally think that I’m losing my culture. I spent 4 1/2 years of my life amongst Mexican Americans and first or second generation immigrants. I’m forgetting, and it’s awful. It’s awful.

What’s more, there’s not a lot I can do about it. My school offers a Spanish class, but it’s Spanish 1 (which is about what I learned in first and second grade…) and it’s only for 8th graders. Even worse, the high school that I’m going to go to only offers Spanish 1 and Spanish 2…and Running Start, which would allow me to take college classes, is only available to Juniors and Seniors.

I don’t want to forget. It’s scary. My dad always says it will come back to me as soon as I get immersed again, but…what if that never happens? What if I really do forget?

I’m sorry. I know this post is really long, and I’m sorry for that. But I sort of feel like crying…and writing this is really the only way I know to get it all out…

If anyone has any good suggestions of books written originally in Spanish to read, I’d appreciate it.

The only problem with Immersion, or my Immersion program at least, is that we didn’t learn much grammar. But I went to Spanish camp in 2006 for a month as a crediter (the level that gives you high school credit) and I learned so much both grammar and culture-wise. Most of the counselors are from Argentina and there’d always be someone drinking Mate (a tea-like drink, bitter and very energizing, rather addictive) and you’d beg some off of them.

I have been excessively curious about this since I started posting…*finish spazzing*

Hmmm…I don’t really know what else to write. However, I don’t feel justified in hitting submit for such a short post.

Oh, I just remembered something. A couple of days ago my friend was waring *gasp* a shirt with a hpb (drawn somewhat differently from the Muse ones) and underneath it the words, “cute, but physcho”. The, the next day, I saw a magnet with a hpb (again, not drawn to the Muse pattern, but still recognizable) under which the word “evil” was insciribed, in my friends’ locker. Has the world suddenly converted to Mostly Harmless? Or am I majorly missing something?

on the same note as 122- Concordia Language Villages are good. I’ve done them before. You could either take a two week session or a month long one. The month long one gives high school credit so it is like taking Spanish class. I’d recommend Bemidji as a location. I think you’d love it. (GAPAS, I won’t be there this summer or anything and I don’t live near the Spanish camps)

Just watched “The Examination for Lieutenant.” The sad thing is that’s the last episode I really like. “The Duchess and the Devil” = meh, even though *crackle*, which is good, and “The Wrong War/The Frogs and the Lobsters” = not very good at all. Guillotines and all that, not to mention *cracklecrackle*. Then you go into the Mutiny/Retribution duo, which I like quite a bit, and then the other two, when he’s a captain and has a wife and all that, and those I don’t like at all. Too much marital drama for my taste.
The Hornblower movies are just so much better when the romance is left out. Same goes for the books, I would guess, but I actually haven’t read any of the books that have ladies so I can’t be sure.

wednesday: ebeth has jazz band, again until 4:30, and then she has to study more for chem, learn what gov she can (AP test monday!!!!!), and go take pictures of pete hamill talking at the high school

thursday: ebeth has a gigantic monster-sized pit rehearsal, she’s not sure how long but they’re ordering pizza so past dinner. then ebeth has to (as always this week) learn gov, and do whatever homework she has to do (such as finishing this essay that she probably won’t get done tonight)

friday: LEARN GOV, pretend to study for SAT (mater will probably make her), sleep, and do whatever other hw for monday since…

saturday: taking the SAT in the morning and then prom that night. going to an after party which could go as late as 4 AM (but will probably be a bit earlier in her case)

sunday: REALLY FREAKING LEARN GOV and SLEEP

monday: AP GOV TEST FIRST THING MONDAY MORNING AAAAH

    tuesday: *collapse and death*

I have to say the blog was alot better in 2006. I think we should stop letting new people post, and return the blog to its old glory, OR we should make threads that only people who were here by summer 2006 can go on. This way, those threads can be the wackyness that they used to be, even though we will be missing some people, who made the blog special

First of all: I can’t believe I’m 6K days old! It seems like such a long time…

Second of all, Mom is doing really well! She hasn’t been doing much but reading, watching TV, and sleeping, but that’s about all you are up to doing when you have just had 60% of your liver removed.

Third: Good luck to all Screnzy-finishers! I wish you happy writing these last few hours.

Fourth: Rebecca, I do hope you’re okay. Getting that close to HPBs is dangerous, and I think you would be especially susceptible to bunnification because of your previous experience with the topic. (See: bunny hat). However, you appear to be doing fine, but I wish you the best of luck in the future. :D

Fifth: Cat’s Meow — my deepest sympathies on your dress-wearing-dilemma. I don’t like dresses, though I often wear skirts (ankle-length, with jeans underneath, but still…). Whenever I need to be fancy-looking, I have a few suits which I wear. But dresses are dreadful. *sends luck*

Sixth: I’m sorry I haven’t been on much lately. I can assure you, I have visited every single day, I just don’t always post something. The weather has finally gotten warm enough to be outside for extended periods of time, and I have been spending almost all of my free time outside, and not inside on the computer. I’ve also had a lot of schoolwork, because it’s nearing the end of the year and I’ve been studying like mad for my Spanish final. I’m also studying ahead for next year, where I’m taking all AP classes and doing my graduation project. Fun! :D Anyway, I’ll try to be on as much as I can, I just don’t always have a ton of time to catch up on the posts I missed. *tries to do better*

Hypatia would like to inform anyone who cares to listen that she just added the final couplet to her sonnet, and it is probably the only part of the poem, which does not deserve to be shredded into thousands of tiny pieces, stabbed with red hot irons, and launched into the void. Furthermore, Hypatia would like to make it known that, after having done this, Hypatia did two excessively amusing math problems. Hypatia thanks her audience for their time and from refraining from throwing tomatoes at her due to her excessively riling use of the third person.

Speaking of illnesses and getting better and stuff…one of the girls on my soccer team was at a soccer game across the state, playing with another team, which she’s going to play with this year. They’re sort of our sister team, except they’re at a slightly higher level then us, but we share players all the time and stuff. ANYWAYS. About 2 minutes into their first game this girl was playing forward, was going for the goal, and was apparently the target of a particularly hard tackle. (For those of you who don’t play soccer, a tackle isn’t like a football tackle. It’s where you take the ball from someone, or at least try to.) As my team was starting our game, the next day, she was going into surgery with a broken ankle. Ouch. Now she has a plate and 9 screws in her ankle and won’t be able to play soccer until the fall. Which really, really, really stinks, because she’s one of our leading scorers. And it just stinks in general, for her, because she has 9 screws in her ankle. :(
