Oh, goody! A new thread!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. A fresh start.
I just happened to come back from a hard morning of baking cucumber muffins. Simply scrumptious. *looks at menu* Does the Hare and Hedgepig sell those? They are quite good you know.

Mmmmm… Something smells good… I’ll have a nutella crepe and a green tea please.

What should we talk about?
(6) We had begun a conversation about gardens just before the new thread was made.
Oh, gardens. I’m a simply terrible gardener. I haven’t the patience or the passion. It’s nice when I’m in the right mood, but that’s rare.
I have a few questions about stitching for anyone who will care to answer them.
1) How do you make gathering stitches? Or whatever they’re called. The ones that make gathers.
2) What sort of stitch does one use when hand-sewing a garment?
3) What do I do when my machine doesn’t have zig-zag and my fabric is cut with the grain?
O.k.
Oooooo. I learned how to use a sowing machine in the 6th grade. And then I quickly forgot how because I never used another one afterward. I can hand stitch though. Kind of. But I really don’t know anything about sowing. So………..
10- I can do running stitch (oh, real useful) and whip stitch (even more pathetic). And I could use our old sewing machine, but our new one confuses me, so I need my mom’s help. And she’s not coming home till, like, ten. So yeah. -sigh-
I embroidered a cool (but highly stylized (think minus the rigging)) tallship on my shirt.

8–2) Depends on what kind of garment. A simple straight stitch will usually do, if you make your stitches small and tight. I don’t do any heavy-duty sewing, though, so take that with a grain of salt
3) Hand-stitch it yourself, I guess. What do you mean, cut with the grain?

2) A “straight stitch.” Like running stitch, or something else?
3) Cut on the grain means, do you know what cut on the bias is? Cut on the grain is the opposite. It’s cut with the little straight threads in a piece of woven fabric. I’m too lazy to cut on the bias (if I cut on the grain I can keep the original hem of the sheet and don’t have to hem it myself), so I’m cutting on the grain. And I don’t have zigzag to keep th end from raveling. So I guess I’ll have to do all that weird hem-folding stuff. -sigh-
I can only use the sewing machine, thank you. My back gets quite sore from leaning over fabric with a needle, I’d much rather work on a machine. *sips her fresh Earl Grey*. Might I be graced with a blueberry scone?

Hmmmmmmm. My sister seems to have back problems when she plays piano, at least, she did yesterday. Although, that might just have been an ingenious excuse to get out of practicing our duet with me. *sigh* Our piano teacher has been on vacation for a few weeks and he gave my sister and I a duet to work on. Of course, my sister kept putting off practicing it, claiming that she didn’t know which book it was in. Of course, I was nice and didn’t nag after I told her where it was so she never bothered to look at it until yesterday. Our piano teacher comes back this Monday. So, now, we’re terribly behind. I mean, duets are trying enough when both players know there part, much less when one doesn’t. Of course, we did better then I would have hoped. The song sounded terrible, but this time, unlike most times, one of us didn’t end up screaming at the other, throwing the book at the floor, pounding the piano with fury, or just breaking down and crying. I don’t really know why this always seems to happen when duets are involved. It might have something to do with my sister and I not working well together………

I’m going to sewing camp, it starts on August 4th( my Birthday yay!). 18- Duets are harder, for me at least ,than solo pieces. Does anyone else have an August birthday?
Alot of people in my family were born in August. Does anyone take Latin classes? I do, it’s really fun.

As for the straight stitch vs. running stitch–the only difference between those two that I know of is that a straight stitch, you do one stitch at a time, whereas in a running stitch, you run the needle through all the material at once and then pull. But that’s just how I was taught.

22- That may be the difference. But then there’s backstitch (for embroidery), which makes more sense than straight stitch, and the machine uses TWO threads.

20- I took Latin I and will take Latins II, III, and AP throughout the remainder of my high school career. Have you taken the NLE? And, by the way, my birthday’s in April. On Earth Day, to be exact.
I can’t sew to save my life, although I’ve tried many times. Latch-hooking is fun, though.
23- Hand sewing and machine sewing are completely different, as you know. The machine uses two threads, or else the stitches wouild unravel. I haven’t th epatience for embroidery, though if I really want to, I can. If you can’t zig zag, then just use really small stitches, so that it’s stronger. And then repeat, so that it’s sewn twice.
I’m almost finished with my red tweed scottish style dress, and my mom is washing my turkish pants before I hem it so that the fabrik has already shrunk when I do hem it. Otherwise it’ll be too small.
I’ more of a knitter myself. I usually take part in making scarves, it’s a very enjoyable recreation. *tries to sip tea again* Oh, dear, seems I’m all out of tea, again! Shame on me for being such a hasty driker. I think I’ll try something new. Oh, good wung? Might I sample the dandelion and burdock? Thank you very much.
Arg. I guess I should talk to my Mom about learning more about sewing. I guess when I’m older it’ll come in handy.
23–I usually backstitch by hand, with embroidery thread so you can see the stitches. I looks prettiful.

Ah, sewing. Made a half a skirt from a pair of valences yesterday, and half a vest from a skirt. I’d attempt to give sound advice on this sort of thing, but I mainly improvise and reverse-engineer things. A little experimentation never hurt anyone, unless, of course, this person injured him or herself with one of those nasty stitch-removers.
Try pulling apart old garments or imitating new ones. Look to websites with free tutorials and samples of handmade clothing for inspiration. Threadbangers is a useful webseries, full of easy-to-make projects and horrible puns. DIY seller sites for ideas. But, please, not DevArt, because it’s impossible to navigate it without being barraged with an onslaught of anime fanart.
If you’re just starting, I’d recommend making bags or purses or armwarmers or scarves or things of the like. Almost anything can be done with them, and they have a sort of standard structure that’s impossible to ruin.
Unfortunately, there are no longer any decent fabric stores in my area. As a result, I shop in the plus-sizes sections of thrift stores, because it’s not unusual to find a skirt with two yards of fabric for about fifty cents. Bonus if it’s lined.
As for gathering, usually running stitches work if you pull the fabric together. And if the stitches are relatively uniform. You might just have to go back over it so it stays in place. If you’re using the sewing machine, you might want to iron the pleats or gathers in place first. The person who invented the iron is a genius, I swear. I iron everything.
I may be rambling at this point, so I’ll just enjoy the tea.

I have a sewing machine. I’ve just finished making a gaiter for an autocue unit. You wouldn’t want to see the stitching. It’s incompetent, bordering on laughable. I think there’s something wrong with the tension control. That’s my excuse, anyway.
Just to let you know a fresh batch of quinces has arrived. They look excellent. The wungs should have them turned into jam in a day or two.

Yes, the wungs make jam. They’re excellent at it too. Wungs are too shy too sell it, however, and so you can only get it at virtual tearooms on MB.
Sadly, I do not have a taste for jam, or jelly for that matter. The spready, fruity, sweetness just has never worked for me. I much prefer butter and honey!
Although, I’m sure the Wungs’ jam is very delicious!
Jam! I simply adore the stuff. My auntie makes jam so very well. I’m sure the wungs are just as good, if not much better. Might I have a teacake and some jam, please?

You’re in luck. The first 30 jars of the finest quince jam ever produced by a wung are now on the shelf at the back of the store cupboard, and available for orders. There’s another huge pot of quinces boiling down on the stove, so it looks as if there will be an inexhaustibel supply. At least, I think it’s a pot of quinces. One never quite knows wth wungs.
