  9. (18) earthgirl, Gimanator hasn’t reappeared, so as far as I’m concerned you may take the Black pieces on Board 1; your turn to move.

Unable to resist a THF-vs.-TMFA pairing, I’ve also created Board 2 for Taiwan Hippo Fan and The Man for Aeiou.

  10. chess 3: pawn to g5 ((in case i dont get the codage for chess yet, that’s the pawn in front of my right hand knight up 2 right?))

    Pie 0

  11. Board 2: Nc3 (That’s my knight on the left moving the closest to the pawns, in case I didn’t code that right)

  14. Can I have an opponent?

Or if not, I have a chess puzzle. Suppose you have a chess board with all the pieces in their normal starting positions, except for one black pawn who has moved 2 spaces out. According to the rules of chess, is this position possible?

  15. Also: 38) Yes! White Knight moves out, Black Pawn Forward One, Knight goes back, Pawn forward one more! “White doubted itself” The Mysterious Benedict Society!

  16. Bishop to, erm… c4. I think.
Gah, I hate the beginning of the game. There’s probably something horrible with that move that I can’t see.

Sorry I took so long, TMFA.

  17. White: g3! Warning: I will be away for a week without computer. Please do not replace me, as I am returning! I may be able to come on at some point this week, but not often!

…I was in chess club, and I think I got the award at the end of the year for “Most Improved” or something.

When I started, I hadn’t played chess for five years.

  20. Turns to move: The Bookworm, The Man for Aeiou, Kokonilly.

    (79) In the program used to create these diagrams, your move is written 7. … f6xe5. (The “…” shows that it’s Black’s move, because White has already made her seventh move. Pawns don’t have a letter symbol, just the locations of the squares they occupy; the “x” means “capture.”) Most tournament players would write it more compactly: “7. … fxe” or even “7. … fe” because there are no other pawns on the board capable of capturing from the f file to the e file.

  21. earthgirl eria and the Toatally Raandom Pie VEndor wo is getting tired of haveing three names, but likes them all to much to get rid of a couple says:

    uh…bookworm? wheren be-eth thoust? [Yikes!]

    [Correction: Where art thou?]

[Thou art setting thy GAPAs’ teeth on edge.]

  22. Try (1) hitting the browser’s “refresh” button (usually an arrow or arrows curling in a circle); (2) quitting the browser and restarting it; or (3) emptying its cache (usually an option from a pulldown menu at the top of the screen).

  23. I did all 3 (unless I didn’t do the cach thing right, which my computer whiz Dad said I did) and I still don’t see the board. Will it show up if I do a move?

  29. Wait… so I am now playing ZestyLemon?

Do you mean Pd4? I don’t think Pd5 is possible. Then again, I’m not much good at Chess and even worse when I can’t actually see where the pieces are on the board.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  30. (161) LadyG.,

Yes, it looked as if Adeia was never going to return to the game, so I gave ZestyLemon her place. 1. … d5 is the correct move for Black; 1. … d4 would be impossible.

Do you mean that you can’t see the boards at the top of the thread?

    (160) Bookworm,

I’ll take over her pieces if you don’t mind playing a GAPA, or we can try to find another opponent for you.

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  31. Wait… no, I can see the board, it’s just that I can’t see where the pieces actually are. They are in the same place as they would be at the beginning of a game. That’s probably how they’re supposed to be, it just confuses me cause I’m a visual/kinesthetic learner.

  32. LadyG: Have you tried clicking on the double arrow (> > |) in the righthand red box? It will show you the current position. Clicking on the single arrow in the box next to it will march you through the game move by move. Clicking on the lefthand boxes will change the position back to earlier moves.

  33. The Bookworm & Lurline who can not WAIT for NaNo to start in 17 days! (410 piepoints and three B-Day Points and 42 KAG Points! And 5 Wung Points!) says:

  36. TMFA, in less than a week it will have been 2 months since your turn began, and it’s been more than two months since you ever posted on this thread.

You have been on the blog, I know, so please just post your move (or at least tell me that you’re paying attention).

  38. GAPAs, could I get a new opponent please? Or something? TMFA hasn’t shown up on this thread for ages, and I’d sort of like to play a game.

  39. THF: I could take over TMFA’s game until/unless he decides to resume it — or maybe somebody else here wants to start a new game with THF? MuseBloggers in general seem to be unreliable chess partners, but maybe Cromwell will be interested after he finishes his game with Syllabub.

    Queen captures Knight — f3 I believe.
I think that’s the best choice right now…

  41. Yeah, no joke—that knight’s been sitting there for ages. If you take my queen, I can find a way, but the knights are irreplaceable.

  43. No, I just really wish I had a way to play this game faster and sort of in person—I didn’t mean that I was “sleep-walking” or that I wasn’t really playing.

  44. RQ, you can retrace the moves on your game board, above: your queen took the pawn on d4 on move 6 and is now on d4. (I made the move for you in comment 195.) She can’t take anything else there and move there again. ZestyLemon responded with 6. … Ne7. It’s your seventh move now.
