Rosanne is going to be in the Washington (D.C.) area soon, and she and Robert are thinking of getting together for some pie on the 16th. Unlike last August, this time they’d like to eat the pie. Would anyone else (and ens parents) like to come along?
They might have a picnic in a park, or might go to one of the area’s pie-renowned restaurants. The plans will depend partly on which option is better for any local MBers who might show up. Any thoughts?
Just Rosanna and Robert?
Alas, I can’t get away that weekend, but I shall make a point of eating some pie that day.
Sorry. I won’t be in DC again for a while.
I’ve never been to DC, and unfortunately I don’t have the money to travel right now. Sorry!
That’d be sweet. I’d love to go, but I don’t know if I can. I might, though.
(1) And pie.
I went to DC once, but I live in Florida.

And I’m too young to travel alone.
And I’m really busy.
I’ll do…something while thinking about it!
My family (except Mom, who would be a lab rat again) was planning on biking the Pittsburgh-DC trail that week! We had it roughly planned out — we would carry tents and food on trailers and backpacks, and it would take us about five days, arriving Friday/Saturday. However, that plan never really took flight because my Dad might have to go out of town for a few days that week.
Oh, well.
I’m local, but I’ll probably be in Wisconsin then……oh well.
Have fun, whoever goes, post pictures, etc.
Hmmmmm… August is such a busy month for me, I just can’t make it. My mom’s birthday is the 15th, along with my little brother’s birthday party (going to see Attack of the Clones with 6 hyperactive seven year olds…. *groan*… and the Lord forbid I don’t help out). Then we’re going to Freedom, NH to stay at my grandparents’ lake house on the 17th for a week. When I get back it’s my sister’s (she’s really my cousin, but she lived with us from the ages 13-18, so she’s really more of a sister) 20th birthday. Ungh…. I wish I could be there, though!!!!!
is this thread just going to be about moping for not being able to go meet the GAPAs?
I suppose so. I can’t go…I have to be taking my sister to a summer camp (boring) so I don’t think so…
My parents probably wouldn’t let me go off with a bunch of people they don’t even know about, even the GAPAs.
(11) Parents are required. Rosanne and I won’t meet you without them.
12- Well, that’s always good.
I had a good key lime pie last night…
Random.
Dangit, this is so annoying! I happen to live very close to DC, but Saturdays are no good for me.
I live in nortern CT, so it is a minor possibility that I can go…. will any GAPAs be in that area anytime this summer? or in MA?that is probly the only way my parents will let me go.
::-(:
Rosanne and I are getting together in any case. Maybe we’ll bring laptops and blog our piefest, bite by bite. I hope they have peach.
it seems that they are often in DC or PA
17- Peach is very good.
It’s just the two GAPA’s, as of right now?
That’s right. We’d love it if MBers show up, but we’ll have fun even if it’s just the two of us. We always do.
20- I will be with you two in spirit form. Remember that, Robert.
I’m sure we’ll be well haunted. We’ll be attentive to your emanations.
22- Bring a recorder. Maybe when you play it back, you’ll hear MissSwann whispering to you.
Our plans are in limbo. At the moment it looks as though we won’t be going to WI then, but we’re going to try to keep our schedule mostly clear so then if they call us and say we can come we can just go……but the piefest may be a possibility for me.
I’ll have to ask my dad, since we’re really not sure of anything at this point.
Whatever turns out, I’ll be thinking of you then as well, so be prepared to hear me on that recording too! *tries to sound spooky* *fails, sounding goofy instead*
(24) Yeah, considering whom we’re dealing with here, I expect we’ll all sound more goofy than spooky.
Oh, I was just in DC!!!! It was awesome. We went to the International Spy Museum. Wouldn’t it be great if there was an international pie museum there? all of us MBers could go!!!! *thinks that the pie museum thing was pretty cheesy*
And of course I won’t be able to go. I probably will never be able to.
Looks like I’ll probably be able to go. Although maybe I shouldn’t say that, then everyone will be scared away by the thought of meeting me…….
Wung buttons! If I didn’t have so many college visits scheduled already, I probably could have come. It’s a shame none of the campuses are close to DC.
I’m guessing the answer is no, but will any Musers be anywhere near Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Halifax (Nova Scotia) anytime this fall? Those are the places I’ll be visiting.
I think I can come. Are there any ideas of the timing of things? Such as when/where we’re meeting and such? Because that might help me get there: If we knew when and where the Kokonvention was, we could see if we would do something else while we’re down there. Particularly if this is going to be a much shorter Kokonvention.
As suggested above, a picnic could be pleasant, if the weather is as nice as it is today. But it probably won’t be
28-Don’t be silly
Your presence will make the Kokonvention more fun!
Any other area MBers around?
Red-tailed HAWK

26- The day after the first DC Kokonvention last year (actually, exactly one year ago today!), we were going to go to the Spy Museum. Well, we were standing outside the doors trying to decide whether we wanted to or not, when suddenly, the fire alarm rang! The entire building evacuated and several fire trucks came.
Unfortunately, the chances of being able to come are looking smaller and smaller, so I’m not even going to try anymore. But have fun!
30~ Would you be interested in coming with us? It looks as though we will be going, and we really appreciate your taking me along to the last one. With parental and GAPA approval that might be fun, yes?
Hi, all. Rosanne and I haven’t been doing more planning, but we’ll probably get together around 1 p.m. (plus or minus an hour). My vote is for Afterwords, a cafe in the Kramerbooks bookstore (!) near Dupont Circle. It has a huge selection of pies and is near a Metro stop. But as I say, that’s just my idea, and I need to consult with Rosanne before we can say anything definite.
(33) Oh, I’ve spent many an hour at Afterwords! I’m glad to know it’s still there.
Hi, MuseBlog. I made it across the coast and here I am in the Washington D.C. suburbs at my parents’ house. It’s so green and leafy here compared to California. And my parents are fighting a losing battle against the deer that sneak into the yard each night to devour (what’s left of) their hibiscus plants. No other big news so far except that I’m looking forward to seeing Robert and any other MuseBloggers at Afterwords on Saturday.
MissSwann: I want to go so bad my tummy is hurting, but I can’t.
I actually might be able to.
Or not.
35 – *gasp* Roseanne’s name isn’t GREEN!!!!!
(37) There! I greenified her. (Rosanne lost her verdant hue by posting from her parents’ computer.)
37 – Whoops, misspelled her name.
38 – Ah. Thanks!
Thanks, Robert. You’re right, my parents’ computer isn’t fully MuseBlog compatible. I’ll try to trick it into greening my name. Let’s see if it works.
Nope, but that doesn’t matter: I’m happy to keep you green for the duration.
Thanks. Bye for now
Hi Rosanne!!! (You must be green, no?
)
Hi Midnight Fiddler! Maybe the reason I’m not green is because I’m turning pink from all these Maryland mosquito bites…. Itch itch itch.
(44) Nothing a little green paint can’t fix….
44- Maryland mosquitoes are the worst. I visited my cousins there for two days, and got fourteen bites. Here in New York, I’ve gotten about four so far, this whole summer.
44~ Hmm, they must all be out to get you, I haven’t been plagued by mosquitoes since I got home late in late July from Vermont. covered, i might add, with many, many bites from the ferocious blood-sucking beasts that dwell there.
My mother is threating to make a big peach pie. And bring it. Into the middle of Washington DC.
Oh dear, now they’re saying that if it’s only going to be HAWK and the GAPAs, you could come to our house and have a picnic by the creek…….(Yes, GAPAs, my parents are yelling suggestions from the kitchen, this is not the product of my own only slightly deranged imagination.)
GAPAs?
Moderation?
GIVE ME MODERATION OR GIVE ME PIE IN THE FACE!!!!!
Oh, oops, not the most brilliant things to say around here…….*is pied vigorously in the face*
Oh well.
(48) MF — Peach pie is certainly tempting! Rosanne and I probably need to stay closer in, but I’ll consult with her and see what she says.
Yeah, Maryland mosquitos are muderous. One time, my family was eating outside, and Kittymine, who normally gets eten alive by mosquitos, put on bug repellent. Which chased all of the mosquitoes over to me. 30 bites in one evening.
If I bring in a pie–almost any flavor you want–can there be a Kokonvention in DC on a Sunday?
I counted 14 mosquito bites on my legs yesterday. The good news is they didn’t last long — when I woke up this morning, they were all gone. Though I already have two new ones from a walk around the neighborhood this morning, so I am not perturbed.
Midnight Fiddler and MFP (P is for Parents): A picnic would be peachy
But as Robert said, we must consult. Two potential complications: I don’t have a car completely at my disposal, and I need to be at a friend’s house in D.C. at 4 p.m. that same day.
45- There should be a Paint the GAPAs Green Day!!!!!! You should paint each other green and post pictures on MB!!!!!!!!!
Hi everybody-
As nice an invitation as that is, MF, I think it would be kind to let the GAPAs be where they most comfortably and easily can be. Because Rosanne isn’t here every day, and because Robert and Rosanne had planned to get together anyway and decided to invite us, I feel we should let them say where they’d like to be.
Robert-My dad has been to Afterwords! He thinks it’s a great place for a Kokonvention. What with the books and the hefty pie selection, we ought to be in heaven, no?
Red-tailed HAWK

Robert and Rosanne: That’s fine. It was a suggestion. However, the invitation stands, you’re welcome to visit anytime (provided we have a little notice beforehand, of course!).
We can probably make it into DC that day, and I think it’s mostly decided that we will be there whenever the time is set.
And, Mom probably would bring a pie if you asked her (despite my moanings that it isn’t practical. I usually lose in conflicts like this).
(forgive the double post)
HAWK~ Yes, I completely agree. It was a suggestion, and optional.
We understand now that it will be hard for Rosanne, so that it is not, in fact, an option.
The whole purpose of the invitation was because there is no plan as of yet. It was an idea tossed out for consideration, it was considered and thought better of, due to the circumstances. The invitation remains open for other times, but not this one.
Let’s say 1 p.m. at Afterwords. Rosanne and I will arrive a bit early to stake out a table. If it’s relatively cool and dry, we may decide to sit on the terrace, but we’ll be easy to find.
Fiddler, we’ll definitely make it out your way one of these days, and avail ourselves of your mother’s pie. (Peach is my favorite.)
56~ Hmm, apple has always been my favorite, or cherry. Peaches are best fresh and dripping down one’s chin, or in a cobbler with lots of vanilla ice cream. *drools*
1:00 it is, sir! *salutes* Ooh, I’ve been watching too much Hornblower lately………
I can’t stand any pies where the fillings fall out. They’re better for throwing then eating, in my opinion.
That’s why pumpkin is my favorite.
Everything is still on track, and it looks as if the weather will be fine. Rosanne and I will be at Afterwords at 1 p.m. on Saturday (tomorrow, the 16th) and will be delighted to eat, repeat eat, pie with any Muser or Muser-affiliate who cares to join us. See you there, perhaps!
See you soon (whoever can make it)!
Okay, see you then!! Mom’s not coming, she’s got other stuff to do here at home, but Dad and I will be there.
No, Robert, I won’t try to pie you……sounds like you’re a bit worried, from your posts….but I’m trustworthy, right?
Hmm, maybe not, I just realized that the smilies I use the most are
,
, and
!
How about pie in South Carolinina some time?…..
I bought a peach pie yesterday in order to celebrate the occasion, so I shall be with you all in spirit if not in actuality. If any MBers happen to be wandering around North Carolina near Mendenhall Plantation at the time….
Otherwise, Rebecca will have to eat the whole pie all by herself.
We’re here! They wouldn’t serve us pie in the main restaurant, so we’ve decamped to the bar. The selection is great, but the music is terrible.
(64) Quelle horreur!
(65) Hello, all! Good to hear from you! Too bad about the music, especially for a bookstore.
I confess I’ve already indulged a bit, pie-wise…but there’s plenty more.
Our pie selections:
Me – goober (peanut-butter) pie
Rosanne – blueberry
HAWK and his mom – Death by Chocolate[sic] (one each)
Midnight Fiddler – pecan
Fiddler’s dad – apple
(67) I was just about to ask. Worthy choices, all. Hope yours are as tasty as mine. Make sure you get photos of the event!
By the way, my visitor from UNESCO last week told me the word for “peanut” in his native language is “nguba” — from which we get “goober.”
Rosanne had to leave to see some friends. The rest of us are now at the National Geographic Museum, seeing an exhibition about the admiral Zheng He, who led a Chinese fleet in voyages to India and Africa in the early 15th Century. One of his fleets is said to have had 300 ships, the largest of them 400 feet long and with nine masts, manned by 30,000 sailors. They sailed from Nanjing to Mombasa, now in Kenya — 5,730 miles as the crow flies.
Lucky ducks. We need a CA Kokon. For the most populated state in America, it sure does’nt have that many Musers!
(69) Wow! I just Googled him; impressive. What does Midnight Fiddler think of the ships?
I want Pics!
After seeing the rigging on the ship models, she wonders why the masts didn’t all fall off, says the oarlocks made no sense whatsoever, and is desperately eager to find out how to tack a fore-and-aft-rigged junk.
(73) That certainly sounds like “our” Fern.
73-
Boat nerd…
Booksense (n00b? Or Bookworm with a name change?) suggested on Panda’s Innards thread that a kokon happens in MA. I would like this to happen, desperately!!!!
73 and 74~ Yes, I suppose it does.
But really though, the models (beautiful as they were) made no sense to me at all.
It was crazy, there appeared to be no support from athwartships, or fore and aft. I really do wonder how they stay up with all the pressure of the wind on the sails.
Which brings me o the next question, you couldn’t “dip” them, or change the side of the mast that they are on. So, if you tack (change direction) the wind is suddenly hitting the sail from the wrong side. Weird. And the sails are definitely directional, because they went a bit forward of the mast, opposed to modern sailboats (sunfishes excepted) which have the sail connected to the mast and boom. (Of course the larger sails are different, they have gaff booms, and all sorts of other weirdness, some of which I was attempting to make sense of yesterday.)
Oh dear, I’ve done it again.
I’ll resort to plain English now.
Robert and Rosanne, thank you both so much for letting us come and join you for a visit, we enjoyed it so much! Thank you also for making MuseBlog, and moderating it, and being completely flamablamablous in general. *hugs to the GAPAs*
And CHOKLIT!!! (Or “chocolate” as the pie people insist on spelling it, unenlightened as they are. Although it was very good pie……to eat, yes, I know. *chants to self “pie is to eat, not to throw.”*
Oh, and there wasn’t any mention at all of the footraces……………….yes, it was a fun day indeed.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!
The pie was good and the company even better. Robert had some additional treats: Kokonvention goodies, including Museblog-related stickers galore. I proudly wore my HPB sticker (and my Muse Academy T-shirt) throughout the streets of Georgetown and Alexandria, Va., for the rest of the day.
75~ Make that shipnerd.
Yes dearie, I love you too.
77~ The company was delightful. Thanks so much for sharing your visit. ‘Twas great fun to see you again, 370 some days later, as HAWK pointed out.
Oh, and Robert, are you going to post the pictures of HAWK and I reading in the bookstore? I’ll send along the pictures on my camera when I can, but with my steam-powered internet connection it doesn’t like attaching things to emails……..
We’re having a bonfire tonight. Robert, the HAWK family will be coming, and you are welcome to join us! Any time is good, we don’t have any particular times, probably setting it off at 3 or 4 and letting it burn down to cooking level (about 6 or so). Maybe we’ll see you?
If you want, you can call Dad’s cell phone, I think he gave you the number yesterday.
Fiddler — I’m not sure. It would be wonderful, but I still have so much to do between now and then. I’ll let you know.
Meanwhile, you mentioned a photograph…
Midnight Fiddler and Red-tailed HAWK in Kramerbooks bookstore, reading (respectively) The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls.
80~ Okay, if you can come that’s great, if not, we can work out another time–there’s always plenty of brush and stuff to burn around here.
Ohh, yes, the pictures……….
80-AHAAHAHAHAH!!! That’s great. What a photograph!
What a Kokonvention! Thanks, Robert and Rosanne!
Red-tailed HAWK

82~ Indeed. I look so short though, or you look so tall, I’m not usre which.
I still maintain that the boys one was more interesting, it had summaries of important battles, pirate flags, how to make a treehouse (see, I’m not all violent), and other interesting things. Although some of the advise about girls obviously wasn’t approved by a female before publication……at least not this one.
(83) HAWK’s much-longer legs don’t seem to have given him much of an advantage in those footraces you kept running en route from the bookstore to the National Geographic Museum. You’re fast. I suspect he’d be better at distance running, though.
84~ I stink at distances. The head starts in a few of the more inpromtu races did help him out though, I think it was agreed a general tie.
84- *rubs hands together in a plotting manner* Oh, I would love to race him sometime; my long legs are an extreme advantage.
GAPAs, check your email in a minute, I’m going to send the pictures that were on my camera!
Those books are funny. I think I agree with Fiddler about the Boys book.
I think Fiddler looks so short because she’s kind of slumped over a bit… although R-tH is still definitely taller.
Gah, this is just making me miss you guys… and wish I could have gone for pie.
Pictures courtesy of Midnight Fiddler:
YAYAYAY! The pictures are here!

88~ Yes, I was leaned back against the shelf behind me (which actually collapsed at one point, it was a clumsy day for me.
)
Hey, the guy in the far right of the bottom picture in the straw hat is my dad.
I thinks HAWK’s dad’s shoulder is in that one, too. But you can’t really see what he looks like.
Thanks for posting, oh mighty GAPAs!!!
AHHHHH I’m jealous!
Cool pictures though.
Wow, HAWK, you look different! Or maybe I’ve just never seen such a close picture.
89-
I can see the headlines now:
Midnight Fiddler and Red-tailed HAWK seen in bar together!
Just kidding! And do note the glass of water on the table- that’s all we had, water, honest!
91-Clumsy? Nah, I’m the clumsy one
92-
Out of curiosity, what’s different?
I like the picture of Robert. Actually, I like the picture of me, too. You know, I really like the group picture. Nah, I like ’em all!
We didn’t get an individual picture of MF! Phooey! We didn’t get Rosanne, either!
Red-tailed HAWK

I can’t help but note everyone’s stylish attire.
94-*Giggles*
I tell you, they’re all lovely! I love both of my Kokopellihedron shirts!
For those who don’t know the story here, I asked if Lady B. would put the Kokopellihedron on a shirt because I liked the design so much. Then I couldn’t decide what color to get, so I got one blue and one black!
Red-tailed HAWK

(95) I’m so glad you like them, and thanks again for the suggestion (and the compliment).
96-You’re welcome!
Thanks for GAPA-ing! (I assume that’s a muser word. If not please forgive me)
Red-tailed HAWK

You know, Robert looks a wee bit different in many of the pictures I’ve seen of him. He’s definitely recognizable in all of them, but there is a strange sense of… something different in a bunch of them, especially in that first picture here. Hmm. Maybe it’s just facial expressions?
So how many kokonventions have HAWK and Fiddler been to so far? *slightly amused*
AWWWW!! I don’t have the “funds”.
GAPA’s! Could you please put a notice on the blog asking if there are any bloggers from Connecticut? Please? * does not exessivly pester GAPA’s*
93~ Scandalous! good heaven’s, two Musers seen together in a bar, with suspicious looking Kokonvention activity as well, I’ll bet!
I was too clumsy that day! I knocked over my water (yes, WATER!) glass, dropped something on the floor (I can’t remember what), and collapsed the bookshelf. I probably tripped several times that day too, people always say I move too fast.
94~ I’m wearing my lovely H&H shirt today, as a matter of fact! I love it. *is happy to be wearing favorite shirt*
100) YodaSchmoda lives in CT, but her mother banned her from kokonventions in the near future. I won’t be in america for the forseeable future, but if anybody is visiting Vienna, let me know.
101) Don’t worry. I’ve managed to flip a waffle onto my shirt once (not at a kokonvention, but still a disaster)
