Smileys and Code Tricks

Because the blog’s software strips most formatting commands out of submitted comments, you can’t change the color or size of your text. Here are a few tricks you can do.

[NOTE: “Throwaway” spaces and characters no longer seem to be necessary, since the March 2008 upgrade. But it’s now necessary to put two spaces between smileys.]

    1. Don’t do it, please. The green is used to indicate links. When you type <a> followed by </a>, you’re really creating a link that doesn’t go anywhere. That can only create confusion. Here on MuseBlog, we stand for clarity and precision.

Avatars are really simple, it just require a legit email. Go to gravatar dot com, type in your email, follow the activation link sent, and either upload a picture from your desktop, or find one online, and then you’re all set. It might take a little while for the image to refresh on the ‘blog, however….Hope this helps!

  4. Rainbowstar’s Guide To Links

To make a link, use the following format, but use angle brackets instead of regular brackets. Make sure the angle brackets are the right way around.

    [a href=”URL you’re linking to”]words or smileys you want linkified[/a]

Or, if you want to go advanced and make the little yellow text box that appears when you mouse over the link:

[a href=”URL you’re linking to” title=”what you want it to say in the yellow box”]words or smileys you want linkified[/a]

    Example:

    1. Actually, the dictionaries that list “smiley” give “smileys” as a plural. At least all the ones I’ve checked. I can’t remember the reference right now, but neologisms are supposed to follow modern forms. For instance, “fora” if you’re referring to what you might find in ancient Rome, “forums” if you’re posting on the Internet.

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      1. Oh, true. Safari puts a red line under “smileys” (but not “smiley” or “smilies”), and it looks horrible to me, but I suppose I can’t argue with a dictionary.
(Also, people on my favorite forum tend to say “fora.”)

  8. 1. You don’t need to hit “submit” to see if HTML works. That’s why we have the “preview” button now.
    2. Even if we didn’t have the preview button, you shouldn’t practice here. We have a thread for that.

  9. I’ve noticed that some people link to a comment. Is there a way to link to the comment you want instead of just the general thread?

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
  10. Yes, our idea is to transfer the information to the main page. Instead of closing the thread to comments, however, we’ll clear it and let people post new information if necessary. Like many things about the blog, however, we haven’t had time to do it as promptly and thoroughly as we would if we were the CEOs of MuseBlog International with thousands of employees at our beck and call. (Now, there’s an appealing fantasy.)

    Pie 0
    Squid 0
    1. I understand. Hm… MuseBlog International… you could be onto something there. Taking over the world by governmental means isn’t going so well. Perhaps a corporate monopoly could work better? *schemes*

I’m sorry, that was pointless. *hands over choklit* Take your time, Robert. You’ve got a lot on your plate.

        1. If you know how to do some HTML trick (one that works on MuseBlog, that is) and it’s not listed here, then you can post the instructions. You can also make suggestions as to what other instructions should be included. Otherwise, stick with the HTML practice threads.

It’s actually fine, too, if no one posts anything here. Most subjects are probably covered by now, anyway, considering the limited amount of HTML permitted by the software.

  14. (34) They’re called thorn and edh, Old English letters for the “th” sounds in “thin” and “then.” I wrote a Q&A column about them for Muse many years ago, and every now and then MBers try to revive them.

Edh (also spelled “eth”) is still used in the Icelandic alphabet. For example, it’s the third letter in the singer Björk’s last name, Guðmundsdóttir.

      1. This thread won’t let me make replies, GAPAs.
54.2: There were no squid icons when sbf asked, just so you know. They haven’t been around forever. So when Piggy replied, he did say all there was to it at the time. When squids did become icons, sbf noticed. Since you didn’t know that, though, it wasn’t a bad idea to point out the squid anomaly!
I’d also like to mention for the benefit of future neophytes that a) squids are not dislike buttons and shouldn’t take away from pinkage, but it’s an HTML problem the GAPAs can’t fix and b) A squidded post can still be pink if there are at least 10 more pies than squids, so if there are 12 pies and 2 squids, it’s pink.
        61.1: For moving pies, it’s : arrow : without spaces. For stationary ones, it’s : . : without spaces.
