China
It’s big, it’s important, and, thanks to the Olympics, it’s on our minds. A discussion has already begun at the Hare & Hedgepig; it will continue here.

I have/had a pen pal from XinXiang, which is near Beijing. Well, two, technically. I’ll say more when I find the letters.
And Taiwan is right next to China, and hey, you gotta love Taiwan! Hippo Fan!
Ooh, I want to go to China!
1- Cool. I’ve never had a pen pal, even one from the US.
according to a news source I don’t quite trust, the chinese olympic officials would not let the athletes use the bathroom so most wore adult diapers.
1- I wish I had a pen pal.
2- My dad visits frequently, mabye 2-3 times a year. Something called “business.”
4- o.0 Interesting.
3) I’ve had a few pen pals! They never really worked out in the end though………
4) What? Why wouldn’t they allow them to use the restroom? That’s just nasty!
I’ve been to China. I got to go with my grnadpa. He goes everywhere. I wish i could go with him. That’s my dream, to travel the world. He gets to go EVERYWHERE! Anyway…
China was, wow. We saw only most of the city though, but we also got to see some rural parts. I want to go back. *sigh*
Did you hear the whole scandal with the little girl singing at the opening ceremony? That was just wrong.
3 – I have a pen pal. Except she’s not really a pen pal anymore. We started out as a pen pals, but now we’re just friends. We went to French camp together, and we usually see each other during the summer even if she does live in a different state.
4) :/ well that’s obviously not true
My school is offering an after school class in Mandarin that I really want to take, but I don’t think it’s going to end up working out. I would really love to know Chinese if only because it’s a more practical language to know than Japanese. and also cause it sounds cool lol
7) aw that’s so cool you got to go though! what city were you in? I want to travel a lot too…
8 – I know.
10- Ghuangzhou (if that’s the right spelling) also known as Canton. My grandpa is a Neurologist, he goes places for meetings, but mostly he doesn’t have to sit through them, we walk around during it, and to tourist stuff. We also went to Shanghai, though only for a short time. Chicago looked like a small village compared to it. I guess I should have known that by then, from reading about it, a lot, but it still shocked me.
8 – Agreed. I can understand China wanting everything to be perfect, but that must have been so devastating for the singing girl!
12 – Cool! I’ve never been, but I do hope to visit at least once in my lifetime.
I went to China last summer. It was amazing!
The pollution wasn’t very bad when I went there, but I guess it has gotten a lot worse?
That seems odd since they were trying to clean everything up.
8- I know- that was wrong. They’re the largest country in the world (by population). You’d think they could find someone who can sing and looks nice.
8.
what exactly happened?
*isclueless*
I thought the girl who sang was cute enough anyway. I have to agree, though, Lin Miaoke was cuter.
That’s just wrong, though. Honestly.
16 – Google Lin Miaoke Olympics, you’ll probably find a good article. Also, if you google Lin Miaoke, you’ll find an image of her next to the girl who sang.
*If you search Lin Miaoke on google images, sorry.
16 – Well, a little girl sang it, but they decided she wasn’t cute enough to be on TV (she had buck teeth) so they put another little girl there and she lip-synched.
19) I don’t see whats wrong with buck-teeth. I mean come on, they’re just teeth.
I think that although the girl is prettier, there is no reason to think that the other girl isn’t pretty enough. She’s adorable!
How can I get a penpal? Anyone? Oh well I guess I’ll just wait………..
Nerds RoK mY sOx! (not the candy)
22 – Well, I got my Chinese pen pals from camp. The traveling youth orchestra thingy went to China and brought back letters (in English) from the kids at a foreign language school that learn English. We responded to the letters, and they sent them back. I’m pretty sure the only way to get a pen pal you haven’t ever met is through a pen pal program like that one.
I think I might like to go to China at some time in my life. My dad went a long time ago and loved it. Of course, that was a long time ago, but it still seems like a really interesting place.
23) It is, even though they’ve been having some trouble (Tibet, etc.) It’s still really cool.
Ni men hao.
Wo shi bookworm.
Ni shi shei?
23- “Some trouble.” That’s the understatement of the century.
I just noticed, my last post should’ve read:
24- “Some trouble.”, et cetera.
I’m surprised this thread didn’t create more discussion.
