Holiday Reform

With Halloween just past and a cluster of holidays (starting with Veterans’/Remembrance Day) coming up, now is a good time to think about which ones are worthwhile and how the others might be improved.

Thanksgiving and Halloween seem solidly popular and well programmed. But what are we supposed to do on Presidents’ Day? Or Flag Day? Or Columbus Day, for that matter? Should we cross them off the calendar, or figure out ways to make them more meaningful and/or fun? Likewise, what new holidays should be added, and which now-obscure holidays deserve to be more widely celebrated? We’re sure Musers will have plenty of ideas.

    What about a muse-wide conspiracy:
ALL holidays that don’t involve candy, presents and/or feasts get replaced by secret “pies days”, “donut days” and “muse days” (the muses birthdays). At least everyone will know what to do on “apple pie day” as opposed to “flag day” (I still don’t get that one).

Non-members of the British Commonwealth should also add Guy Fawkes Day (or Night) to their holiday calendars. The foiling of the Gunpowder Plot might not be a compelling excuse for a holiday, but fireworks and bonfires certainly are.

And I very much like the idea of replacing Flag Day with Apple Pie Day.

5- Brilliant ideas, all! Even though I don’t approve of Guy Fawkes day, y’know? I mean, it seems just a little over the top to repeatedly burn him the fellow. But my biggest problem with Guy Fawkes etc. is that no one at my school seems to know about him from actual history, but from that movie “V for Vendetta.” For example, yesterday in Global Studies:
Brenda: I feel like you’re the Guy Fawkes of my kingdom.
    Me: [hearing “guy fox”] What?
Brenda: Have you ever seen V for Vendetta?
Me: Oh, Guy Fawkes! I’ve never seen V for Vendetta but I know who Guy Fawkes is. [Inwardly: Doesn’t everyone?]
Or when people think that song that goes “Remember, remember, the fifth of November…” comes from that movie. I know it can’t possibly because I read it in “The House of Arden” which was written by E. Nesbit in 1910 (or something like that), long before anyone had even thought of making a movie.

NOt only did they take out huge chunks of things (acceptable only because of time constraints–although I, for one, would watch a 100% accurate HP movie no matter how long it was), but they added things, thus meaning more of the book had to be cut, and then they changed things–pointless changes. And to be quite honest, I thought the kids acted just fine in the first two,and they were the only two movies so far that even came lcose to following the plot with few liberties taken. And I have a picture of the DA fromthe fifth movie, and everyone towers over Harry. EVERYONE, even the girls.)

And five, oh god, yes, he looks horrible, and has completely outgrown any cuteness he ever possessed. I mean, I have posters from the movies above my bed (really, there is nowhere else I coudl put them but my canopy on my bed–my walls are covered, as is my ceiling! No, I’m not a werido, really!), and one is of Harry in Chamber after having just defeated the basilisk, when he is all bedraggled and dirty, and his hair is all messed up–and this is by far the best of all the ones I have (two from goblet, one of the DA, with Harry-the-dwarf, and the Chamber one). He looks the cutest and most attractive in this one–the others, not so appealing. He outgrew his good looks, in my opinion. Ummmm, and really, it’s not creepy that I prefer how he looked when I was 12, I’m the same freaking age as him! (Well, technically he’s a year older) sorry, some people look at me weird when I say he (as himself, not necessarily as Harry) looked better in the first 2 or even 3 than in the fourth–and especially the fifth.

50–and the werewolf. the werewolf was bad too. I mean, it was very clearly stated in the DADA class Snape taught. In the book, he asked what the difference between the werewolf and the truewolf was (in the movie, he asked the difference between an animagus and a true wolf), and Hermione began to respond that there were a few minor/subtle/whatever differences. But only a blind person would mistake the werewolf in the movie for a true wolf. It looked nothing at all like one would imagine based upon the book. Not to mention, the page number Snape told them to turn to was different in the movie than the book (hello, why change something so trivial?)

And the time travel thing–they only interfered with their earlier selfs ONCE in the book–Harry cast the patronus charm–and in the book they did in NUMEROUS times (Herm threw a pebble at them in Hagrids, Herm spied on her former selfs hair, “is that really what it looks like from behind?”, and got seen by her former self, Herm and Harry howl to lure the werewolf away from there earlier selves….and the list goes on)

And then the 4th–well I dislike it for purely personal reasons, although each time I rewatch, I dislike it less and less. ok, that was obscure. Nov 19, 2005, I saw the 4th movie. My dog (she was nine years old, btw) had gotten into the habit of escaping off our back porch in increasingly inventive ways whenever we went somewhere. Her newest was tearing up the fencing (to prevent little kids/little dogs from walking off the porch between slats–it was about 6-10 feet to the ground, depending) and crawling off the porch between the slats. So, she was a 65 lb husky mix, the slats were about 12 inches apart, max. So, that day/evening, when we were at the 4th Potter movie, she tore up the fencing, tried to crawl off, but got stuck, and was hanging upside down by her back legs (the slats were hooked at her hips) for–damn, I dunno, could’ve been hours. Anyway, to make a long story short, we took her to the vet, they kept her overnight, and the next morning she was dead. So, yeah, for the longest time I absolutely despised the 4th movie, for no more reason than of what it signified. Still don’t care for it a lot, but I have realized its not as bad as I first thoguht.

Yeah, so that’s my “holiday” this time of year–every Nov 19th (or the closest date, if Nov 19th isn’t available–ie, if my parents are home all day Nov 19th, as they don’t know about my ritual, and I intend to keep it that way) I watch the 4th Potter movie, and bawl my heart out. And then continue being depressed all the next day, too, as it is the day she actually died. yup, lovely celebration. And, sadly, for the first time since then, I am actually looking forward to Thanksgiving time, which breaks my heart. So, yeah, I think I shall shut up and stop being depressing.

  75. Vendaval’s post from the Year of Random Celebrations thread is also pertinent to this thread, so I’m copying it here:

    Flag Day
*International, I guess it should really be Vexiollogy Day, but I’m not sure if that’s cooler sounding, or scary like an operation. On this day, each person finds a country they know nothing about, and learns what the flag means, any wear shirts displaying the flags.

    Manifesto Day
Everyone finds a manifesto. As a greeting, you read it, or an excerpt, if it is too long. Write your own, if you feel inspired.

    28 Hour Day Week (28HDW)
To test the 28 hour day, for a week (possibly 2 or more are needed. I guess it depends how fast you adjust.). Hmm. A celebration of nonstandard time? Like: I’ll get to school when the rain has filled the pot. ( The pot must fit all of the international pot time telling standards, of course, accurate to 100th of a gyaliter and impermeable. don’t forget the rain-rate tables to be consulted!)

    Esperanto
Because it needs a day. Tie in with international understanding?

    (Extinct) Flightless Bird Day
Ok, so this one’s a little less though out. Could it encompass all unusual animals in need of our protection and study? With the bold dodo as a mascot, protesters and protectors rally in the heart of the city to save those little miracles of nature, off endangered and unknown.

    Tallship
Nautical in general, to help people understand our oceans and shorelines. Because land is only 30% of the world. Any ideas, Alice, MF? Begin to build a boat, to be launched in a year??

    Bicycle!
Ride a bike, close the roads to motors! Build a bike? Donate to Pedals4Progress?

    Typesetter’s Parade
In celebration of the visual arts, all of the tiny details that most people don’t see, like good font choice, graphic design, design in general, colors. I imagine a parade with people carrying big white signs on sticks, a single triumphant letter in black.

  88. Boxing Day predates the nations of Canada and the United States by a few centuries. It started in the Middle Ages as a day when persons in the upper class gave presents to servants or others lower down the social scale. There are several explanations for how the box part came into it, and I’m not sure which one is supposed correct.

Go Pi day!! This should be a national holiday or something. Last year at school my lunch table ate four pies and an entire bottle of reddi-whip (i know, its not the same as real , but its a wee bit hard to spray great heaping blobs of stuff you made with cream and a beater into your mouth). And this was 12 people. ‘Twas great fun. but it was on a Saturday this year so I’m bringing mini pies on Monday. But I’m pretty sure that a very few adults celebrate this holiday.
