If I were to start reading Terry Pratchett, where should I start? I’ve got gift certificates to B&N and no idea what I want to get, for once.
Holy Toledo! That was my first first post!
never read. answer zallie’s q plz cuz i’m almost out of boooks!
Yay! I love you people!
I would start with Guards! Guards!, then Mort, then Equal Rites, and then Color of Magic. Color of Magic is the first book written, but it isn’t his best. So I suggest you get yourself hooked first and then read it.
Other good books to read in the begining are The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, one that I enjoyed, Moving Pictures, and Pyramids.
Once you have read those, you will be accquainted with all the characters. You’ll want to read the in order depending on when they were written, if you get easily confused by timelines, but you don’t have to. Most of the books stand on their own, so you don’t have to read the previous books. It’s just easier. And once you’ve found out what an amazing author Terry Pratchett is, you’ll want to.
NAC MAC FEEGLE RULE!
Yay! Terry Prattchet!
My favourite is Theif of Time.
Get Men At Arms. It’s my favorite. Mort is awesome. I love how his name is Mort. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are some of my favorite Pratchett concoctions.
I have never read anything by Terry Pratchett. However, my sixth sense is telling me that he’s a good author and I should have read some of his books by now.
There was an excerpt from The Amazing Maurice in Muse a while ago.. I liked Wee Free Men, which is one of two Terry Pratchet books I have read, the other being the aforementioned The Amazing Maurice..
i like all his stuff exept discworld
nvr read it… never… what’s it about?
Alrighty, this is totally where my gift certificates are going!
EXCEPT Dicworld? I only read his Discworld books! They’re amazing! And make up most of the books he’s written, actually.
I’ve read or own about 25 of his books. I own Men At Arms, but I haven’t gotten up to reading it yet. Soon.
oooo i just found out that ebeth hates pwt. bad ebeth, pwt pwns you!
oh this totally relates to the thread.
yes it does! don’t argue with me!
fine, i will relate to the thread:
i will read terry pratchet, as soon as i can get to the library, which may be never.
there, see? i relate to this thread.
i am in the middle of good omens. actually i have been in the middle of it for some time. i need to put more time in my day for reading.
Men At Arms is my favorite. So. Zarking. Funny. I was reading it at lunch when I first got it, and I literally spurted milk out of my nose. It was an interesting moment. I always erupt into hysterical laughter. Like in that part in The Truth about the tea? That was enormously funny. I
Terry Pratchett has more fans than Madonna. Which, flatly, isn’t all that surprising. Then again, there are people who make a living out of being Madonna impersonators and I have never heard of a Terry Pratchett impersonator.
Oh. Career choice. Fun.
How do you be a Terry Pratchett impersonator?
Terry Pratchett is the funniest thing since pudding.
someone should make a list of all the books he’s written, so i actually have something to read… these are the ones i’ve gathered so far

There’s Monstrous Regiment, Soul music, Good Omens, Hogfather, Wee Free Men, A Hat Full Of Sky, and many more. Only two Guards! in Guards! Guards!
Whoa. Guards is such a WEIRD word.
Here’s your list. It’s rather long. I’m listing them in the order they were written, not the order you should read them.

[-“The Light Fantastic”
-“Equal Rites”/
}-“Mort”*/
[-“Sourcery”

in whatever order, I don’t know. I BEEP FOR PRATCHETT!
There are only two Tiffany Aching books.
I’ll do another list later.

wow, that’s a long list…
Nork nork.
That is from Last Hero, one of the “extras.” It’s about Cohen the Barbarian and is illustrated.
Did you know that “Where’s my Cow” is coming out? (Thud readers know of what I speak.)
Where’s My Cow is already out. I saw it at Barnes and Nobles, but I didn’t by it. The illustrations were cute, though, and the story was funny.
Thud! was an awesome book. I love maniac Sam!
Nork nork.
I’m reading “Sourcery” at the moment.
You have ‘Wizard’ engraved on your heart, Rincewind.
“Yes, but the trouble is I keep meeting people who might want to find out,” said Rincewind miserably.
Discworld is fascinating. Just the concept of something on the backs of four giant elephants that stand on Great A’Tuin, the turtle…awesome.
Nork nork.
Oook?
Who is the Phantom Norker? Grant O.? Ebeth? Phoenix?
Check the Who’s Here page.
Hey! I’m not on there!
Nork nork.
Oook?
I am. But the Norker isn’t. Oh well.
Go Sgt. Angua! She should have a Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Never mind. Phantom Norker is RRF. See “Talking Heads In Bubbles”, #158 or something.
My favorite Watchman is Vimes. He isn’t stupid, I think he’s actually quite brilliant deep down. With all his bad qualities, there’s something about him I really like.
Death is just awesome.
So is Susan.
I like The Dean. He’s so ridiculous. It’s just hilarious that a 72 year old wizard could be so silly.
Yay! Nac Mac Feagle do rule!!!! I agree.
yeesh. i went to the library and looked for tp, and when i finally found him i was so confused that i didn’t get any. i asked my friend to lend me some, but she hasn’t done so yet, so i will have to go back to he library. darn.
Why didn’t you get any? Do you remember which ones there were?
Right now I’m reading Pyramids.
I have to say, the Watch books are my favorite, and Sam Vimes is my favorite character, closely followed by Death.
I’m the Death of everyone I meet. Everyone who sees me dies. Although it doesn’t always happen immediatly.
there were maybe 3. i remember “the color of magic”. and my parents were trying to get me hurry up. i promise will get some! soon!
I would read “Men At Arms” first, then “Wyrd Sisters”, then “Mort”. And after that, go ahead and choose anything that looks good. I finished “Equal Rites” today. I still think “Men At Arms” is the funniest of all of them.
Death, War, Famine and Pestilence are very interesting. Vimes is quite brilliant. He’s smart, he’s perfect for his city, but he really is a bundle of character faults marinated in alcohol.
*Counts B&N bookcards* I’m on it.
I really want to read Men at Arms, and it’s the only Watch book I didn’t buy that I haven’t read. Cor.
Sam Vimes is my favorite character, closely followed by Death. I mean, Death doesn’t shadow him, although he has had many near Death experiances, Death is just me second favorite character.
Queen J, of those four books I’ve read “Mort” and “Equal Rites”. I just finished “Moving Pictures”, am in the middle of “Pyramids”, which I left in school, and now am starting “Reaper Man”. Story of my life.
Over the weekend I read Thief of Time, Equal RItes, The Fifth Elephant, Thud, and I am halfway through The Truth. Great books!
Did you see Maniac!Sam in Thud!? I love Sam, but he is awesome as Maniac! Sam. He was also really cool in The Fifth Elephant.
No! I looked for Maniac! Sam, but I only saw the signs of him (i.e. the evil dwarf being hurled through the balcony railing after trying to kill Young Sam. Is he Sam’s alter ego?
Angua and DEATH rule! Carrot is okay but he is too nice. Sally is neat as well. I like the Watch! My choice of job (if, that is, I lived in Ank-Morpork. Hehe. :))
SPOILER
Maniac!Sam in the tunnel, being controlled by the Summoning Dark. Screaming “WHERE IS MY COW?!!!!!!!!!!!!“
Goode Omenf
Verrie weirrd booke.
Terry Pratchett if a verrie goode author (yef I amme doinnge thiff forre a reaffonne… Readd Goode Omenf if yowe reallie wannte to finde outt whie…)
I would quote something funny, but the quotes haven’t quite sunk in yet… (I finished reading late last night…)
“…” Rules! (So does multiple parentheses [the more the better { *giggle* }] !)
” ,” He said.
” ?” She said.
” !” He said.
WOW i actually read one! I found one lurking around the library…it sorta jumped out at me. So i grabbed it. Something about getting into a computer game…
Oh yes. Only You Can Save Mankind. That’s what it was called. Yeah. Anyway, good book. Yayness
Haven’t read that one.
I just finished Pyramids, on to Reaper Man. I can’t believe I forgot to buy Men At Arms.
I liked Good Omens
I LUV Terry Pratchetts books. I’ve read almost all of them. I just finished going postal & thud
read the color of magic. Haha!!! that was funny!!! I ♥ the little things in the camera, and i ♥ ♥ ♥ the Luggage!!!
Just finished Reaper Man and Feet of Clay. I still can’t believe I didn’t get Men At Arms.
Oh well. On to Jingo.
My life goal is to meet Terry Pratchett, shake his hand, and say one word to him.
Moo.
Yay, Vimes! Actually, my friend met Terry Pratchett at a book signing. I have… Jingo, Hogfather, Feet of Clay, A Hat Full of Sky (a younger readers book, but it’s longer than some of the adult books), Mort, Wyrd Sisters, Equal Rites, The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Interesting Times, The Fifth Elephant, Maskerade, The Last Continent, Carpe Jugulum, I’ve READ The Wee Free Men (another younger readers book), and I think that’s it. I’m hooked! Very thoroughly!
I’ve read all of those excet for Wyrd Sisters, The Light Fantastic, Interesting Times, and Maskerade.
Sam Vimes is my best friend. He just doesn’t know it yet.
I love how dead this thread is.
~Luna
It was very active for a while, but I think people are talked out.
i am finally getting terry pratchet books. ive read equal ritees and the color of magic, and im now reading wyrd sisters.
you want a dead thread, go look at the myths and legends thread.
I’m setting up a Terry Pratchett fund. My goal is to own all of the Discworld books. So far I have ten books and ten dollars.
Nobby is in touch with his “inner woman”.
Sam Vimes is my favorite character. I’ll even forgive him for naming his son after himself, as that was Sybil anyway.
Death is awesome too.
Rincewind and sam vimes are the the coolest characters ever. My favorite books are going postal, thief of time, and thud! Terry Pratchett is one of the greatest authors in the world, a satirical genius.
Vimes is awesome, and I’ve taken quite a liking to Susan as well. But I think my favorite character must be Vetinari, because he is wonderfully brilliant. He always has everything figured out, but knows when to let people figure them out for themselves. Wonderful stuff.
Monstrous Regiment was the first Pratchett book I read, and it’s a toss-up between that and Soul Music as to which is my favourite.
I love Diskworld books…I’ve read Colour of Magic, The Amazing Maurice, Night Watch (#4 of my top 5 favrite books ever!), I’m reading Wee Free Men, I’m starting Mort tonight and Reaper Man next week.
67-Yes! I love vetinari. And Vimes, of course (how can you not love him?!?!) and Death…i love how he gets depressed and tries to act humanish…oh man, Hogfather was SO funny!!!
The first one i read was The Colour of Magic, and then i didn’t read any more for a while until Carpe Jugulum, and then after that i read (in no particular order) Night Watch, Men At Arms, Soul Music, Monstrous Regiment, Thief of Time, Small Gods, Hogfather, Jingo, Going Postal, Feet of Clay, Interesting Times, The Fifth Elephant, The Last Continent, Eric, Moving Pictures, and about half of The Last Hero. Amazing stuff, all of it. Oh yes, and Only You Can Save Mankind, which is not a Discworld book, but still. That’s pretty much all the library has, but i’m gonna check some more out next time we go downtown.
You can tell i’ve been busy since i last posted (57) eh?
Didn’t Terry Pratchett write ‘Good Omens’ with Neil Gaiman? I’m reading it now. It’s extremely irreverent towards just about everything, but wickedly enjoyable anyway, lol. ^.^
update on my life:
i have read all of the discworld books, and my favourite ones are the watchmen. i love vimes, and also nobby and carrot and cheery and angua, especially when she gets angry. and i absolutely loved thud!, it was awesome. i loved how carrot stopped traffic so he could get home at six, and how he was wearing the blankie with the yellow duckies or something when he walked into the parlor and i also love mossy lawn and fred and carrot and moist von lipwig and william de worde and also sybil and the patrician and tawnee and polly and sally and gaspode ok ok ill stop now. i own all of the watchmen books, even the ones that only remotely feature them lke the truth and monstrous regiment and my fav are night watch, jingo, and thud except i don’t own thud because b&n didn’t have it because the paperback ones are coming out in august but i has one on order don’t worry.
hello?
