National Emoticon Appreciation Month, Part 2

The monthly Random Thread continues its smiley celebration (in the picture, anyway; the words you post no doubt will remain as random as ever). Emoticons pop up in the strangest places.

Has anyone heard about what Pittsburgh’s mayor is doing?
Well, this Sunday, the Steelers are playing the Ravens to see who will go to the Super Bowl. Our mayor’s name is Luke Ravenstahl. Because of this game, he is going to legally change his name to “Steelerstahl” so he won’t have Raven in his name (also, coincidentally, “stahl” is steel in German) for the game.

    Oh, Pittsburgh…*sigh*

[Another fun Pittsburgh fact: the day after we won the Super Bowl a few years ago, all of our schools had 2-hour delays because they didn’t think they’d have enough bus drivers.]

Did Lady B. draw them all? I get the feeling they’re not Gonick originals. Maybe because they have shadows. Speaking of Larry, I hope Raw Materials comes back soon!

3- I am too scared of driving.
8- That is simultaneously hilarious and worrisome. Maybe a similar situation could be used in a story- some legal documents are no longer valid due to obscure law…, and shenanigans ensue.

Speaking of PE, we’re learning the national dance of the Phillipines. It involves sticks and hopping.

Today at lunch Spumoni and I worked on our comedy routine. Then Melon came up and suggested we involve a banana. Then I started sing Bananaphone (Spumoni was calling her mom to get her lawyer), and we’re now doing that too. It’s pretty dumb.

Hullo everyone. I’ve been gone for a few days and whew, have the posts piled up! I read most of the ones on the last thread, but not very many of these, since I don’t have much time.
Well, yesterday I went with mom and a friend to a music store which was lots of fun. I ordered a new violin case, which will be lovely, since I’ve really been needing one that has a good suspension system and isn’t broken. My old case has been great, but traveling with a case that is in perfect shape but doesn’t offer the greatest protection is a little frightening. The “new” case has good protection but is broken and a piece of junk. String players of the blog: DO NOT BUY AN AMERICAN BRAND CASE. They aren’t made in America and all the ones I got were defective. Shar also refused to stand behind their lifetime warranty. Anyway. I’m glad about that.

However, despite that glimmer of goodness this lovely day is marked with sadness. Another friend passed away recently.
The friend in question was an amazing coppersmith who did 18th century work, my family knew him and his wife from living history events because they were some of the ones who were very kind and helped us out when we were starting. We use the cups he made us every day. I didn’t know him really well, but they were some of the people I always looked forward to seeing a few times a year.

I’m reminded of a few years ago when a friend accidentally killed himself before Christmas and then a few months later my favorite uncle died from cancer.

This morning was weird. I failed my first physics quiz, not because I didn’t know it, but because I’d left my calculator in my room, fearing for its life in the cold. It’s the first week of classes, c’mon! But whatever, physics is pretty easy, and only 10/12 of the quizzes count. Still, it would’ve been an easy 100… I left my water bottle in that room too D=

But it’s all good. Because there is a person in my math class, who is annoying as…all annoying things. He will comment on everything done, loudly discuss homework, and inquire about high scores. He’s pretty good at math, really. Just, annoying. Anyway, he had a homework problem wrong and I totally owned him -is irrationally happy-.

I’m going away again this weekend, and I’ll be back on Tuesday. Every year for MLK weekend, my family drives up to DC to a gathering of my dad’s old college friends and their kids. And can we celebrate Jim Henson’s birthday along with mine? Jim Henson is one of the three people I admire immensely (the others are Leonardo Da Vinci and the person who did the pictures on the paper money- nice attention to details, man!).

Well, let’s see if I can get them correct after all, then.

‘Jealousy’ is more of a feeling of resentment towards someone because of their acheivements/avdantages/ect, ‘envy’ is because of a person’s things, possesions/qualities/situation. SO jealousy is more person-oriented.

I also think in the spanish language the difference is made… larger? Clearer? But when we’ve used it in spanish class it’s usually romantically inclined, and envy more because of objects/situations.

*hopes she got it mainly right and doesn’t look like a fool*

But for me I just instinctivly know when to use one or the other. Like finding a direct object in a sentence. I couldn’t tell you how I knew what it was, but I could find it (actually I know the definition now though, haha. Oh freshman year english.).

It is cold here. About 20 degrees with wind out there right now and it feels like a heat wave, last night was SO COLD.
I spent a good bit of the day looking for the cat to make sure he did alright last night in the cold. After I found him (in probably the warmest place he could find) I went and got him some food and water, which he devoured and guzzled, for a rather small creature he put away a lot in a very short amount of time. Then later I brought his dishes back to the porch. And gave him more water since the water dish was a cake of solid ice.

Now my porch is like an ice skating rink. Because he caught a mouse and messily devoured it in a strategic location so that I was unable to open my door. *sigh* Let’s see if I can avoid killing myself when I go to bed tonight.

Anyway, aside from catering to and cleaning up after our cat, I did the obligatory homework and not a whole lot more. Other than prank calls to my parents, ooh, having a cell phone is fun!

Aaand, GUESS WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?! I might be able to go sailing this summer! I printed out the information, my parents are going to look it over in detail with me (probably tomorrow) and they both seem okay about it. *hopes desperately* The ship is the Brig Niagara, I’ve mentioned it here before, if you’re at all interested in these sorts of things it looks like a very thorough program for their sail training. And they have a focus on history too! *bliss* I really hope I can go.

  81. (79) I draw a slightly different distinction: Jealousy is possessiveness — a nasty fear that somebody you care about might betray you. So if you know a girl with a wonderful boyfriend, you might be envious of her; but if you think she’s trying to steal your boyfriend, you’ll be jealous of him. That’s the old sense of the word, and I think it’s a difference worth preserving, even if many people nowadays use the words interchangeably.

    Lincoln 2.0 Inaugural Ball

    Host: Destination DC

    Venue: Smithsonian American Art Museum

Crowd: Professional period re-enactors, history buffs, steampunk aficionados

Dress code: “Black tie preferred, Victorian attire welcome”

Which means: Bust out the beaver toppers, spats, corsets, hoop skirts and assorted laces.

Quote of note: “There are a bunch of professional Abraham Lincoln re-enactors out there, and we expect that a handful of them will show up in the full outfit with the beard and the top hat and everything.” — Carla Barry-Austin, media relations manager for Destination DC

*sigh* I’ll just have to settle for hbo coverage and a DELAYED viewing on the inauguration, since I will be taking finals instead of watching maybe the most historical moment of my short life.

    91~ Sounds fun!

Brrrr. It’ gotton over 30 degrees today, how amazing! It’s supposed to get really cold again for the rest of the week though. *sigh* I need clothes but we can’t do laundry because the washing machine is in my room with water coming through a hose. When it gets this cold the hose freezes and we have no way of doing laundry. That’s just the beginning, because once we have clean clothes we have to dry them, and hanging laundry on a line outside when the weather is under 30 degrees is hell; no gloves because then you can’t feel the pins, and the combination of wet, dry, wet and cold plus wind makes your hands crack and get so stiff you can’t move your fingers.

So everyone, be glad that you have washing machines and dryers in your houses.
Maybe when I move out on my own I’ll get a real house, what a revolutionary thought. Someday I’ll be able to take a shower and just walk from one room to the other to go to bed. every. single. night.
Of course, I had been promised that the new house was going to be built by the time I was nine so I could have a real room and live under the same roof as my parents. I’m sixteen now, so we’ve got negative 7 years to get it done in to keep that promise. I doubt that I’ll ever live here in a real house.

Alice says that she lost the RRR in the fire and now they’re rewriting it with proper science. Meow’s deserted, you’re gone, and Lord R/Stormwatcher’s gone, and so it’s only Alice and POSOC and TMFA occasionally, and they need someone who knows the story well enough to help nurse it back to health, namely, the other main writer, namely, you. If you’ve really had access to the computer, it was quite unfair for you to abandon in its hour of need the very story that you helped to revive. Before you left, you said that you’d “return in glory.” Now do it.

Snow: I used to despise winter but this year it’s growing on me. It’s by far the best winter I’ve ever had.

Midterms/Exams: Awwww snap I need to go study for Biology, Algebra 2, and History.

A final note: Today on the morning announcements the kid who does them came on and instead of doing the normal “Good morning “school name”, these are your morning announcements” He said “Good morning “school name”, I just lost the game.”
It was the most epic loss of game in the history of the school.

I’ve been avoiding museblog recently because I was such an absolute jerk back then. I said so many mean things, all the time…I can’t get over it…

I didn’t come back because…um…well, I was embarrased at how I behaved back then. I tried so hard to completely forget about museblog, and put it out of my mind.

Also, at the same time, my interest in Muse waned a lot and my interest in Narnia grew a ton. I joined the Narnia fanbase and mingled there…and it was great…I met a lot of awesome people…one of them knew about Muse though.

    So…um…yeah.

I didn’t know where to put this, so here you go. It’s a bit long, but worth it. Sent by my crazy aunt.

After the recent teetering-on-the-edge-of-total-economic-and-financial-meltdown for a couple of weeks it seems economic systems and their
workings have pushed their way into the need-to-know-category.
Well thanks to a friend from rural Ireland we can now simplify this all down to what makes sense and explain 21 economic models
with cows. It is remarkable how much sense it all makes from this real world perspective …

    SOCIALISM
    You have 2 cows.
You give one to your neighbour.

    COMMUNISM
    You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and gives you some
    milk.

    FASCISM
    You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and sells you some
    milk.

    NAZISM
    You have 2 cows.
The State takes both and shoots you.

    BUREAUCRATISM
    You have 2 cows.
The State takes both, shoots one, milks the
other, and then throws the milk away…

    TRADITIONAL CAPITALISM
    You have two cows.
You sell one and buy a bull.
Your herd multiplies, and the economy grows.

You sell them and retire on the income.

    SURREALISM
    You have two giraffes.
The government requires you to take
    harmonica lessons.

    AN AMERICAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You sell one, and force the other to produce
    the milk of four cows.
Later, you hire a consultant to analyse why
    the cow has dropped dead.

    ENRON VENTURE CAPITALISM
    You have two cows.
You sell three of them to your publicly
listed company, using letters of credit opened by your
brother-in-law at the bank, then execute a
debt/equity swap with an associated general offer so
that you get all four cows back, with a tax
exemption for five cows. The milk rights of the six cows
are transferred via an intermediary to a
Cayman Island Company secretly owned by the majority
shareholder who sells the rights to all seven
cows back to your listed company.
The annual report says the company owns eight
cows, with an option on one more.
You sell one cow to buy a new president of
the United States, leaving you with nine cows.
No balance sheet provided with the release.
The public then buys your bull.

    A FRENCH CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You go on strike, organise a riot, and block
the roads, because you want three cows.

    A JAPANESE CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the
size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk.
You then create a clever cow cartoon image
called ‘Cowkimon’ and market it worldwide.

    A GERMAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You re-engineer them so they live for 100
years, eat once a month, and milk themselves.

    AN ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows, but you don’t know
    where they are.
    You decide to have lunch.

    A RUSSIAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You count them and learn you have five cows.

You count them again and learn you have 42
    cows.
You count them again and learn you have 2
    cows.
You stop counting cows and open another
    bottle of vodka.

    A SWISS CORPORATION
You have 5000 cows. None of them belong to
    you.
You charge the owners for storing them.

    A CHINESE CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
You have 300 people milking them.
You claim that you have full employment, and
    high bovine productivity.
You arrest the newsman who reported the real
    situation.

    AN INDIAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
    You worship them.

    A BRITISH CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
    Both are mad.

    AN IRAQI CORPORATION
Everyone thinks you have lots of cows.
You tell them that you have none.
No-one believes you, so they bomb the sh#t
out of you and invade your country.
You still have no cows, but at least now you
    are part of a Democracy…

    AN AUSTRALIAN CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
    Business seems pretty good.
You close the office and go for a few beers
    to celebrate.

    A NEW ZEALAND CORPORATION
    You have two cows.
The one on the left looks very attractive.. ”

Crash landed with the sled somewhere next to me, I’m not entirely sure, I was focusing on getting up as soon as I could because I heard mom scream as soon as I fell, it must have looked very impressive.
So kids, don’t be like your pal Fern who likes to go sledding down very steep, rutted hills standing up on her toboggan. You can stand, so long as you have sufficient balance, just make sure there’s enough snow, my little tumble happened when I hit a patch of mud. A few feet, thorny locust branches and a flip later I was done, but it wasn’t quite exhilarating enough to be worth it.

  198. (199) I guess it depends on how trustworthy you consider the GAPAs. We’re the only ones who can see your e-mail address, and we don’t let MBers post locations or other identifying information that we consider too specific. As far as I know, nobody here has had any trouble traceable to the blog. I couldn’t claim that it’s absolutely safe (there’s some danger in just drinking a glass of water), but it’s designed and monitored to be as safe as we can make it.

Dear god, that picture is just disturbing……. I like it, Rebecca!

Anyway, yeah, I’m back…….And there is absolutely no way I am going to read through all the posts since I left…….Uh-uh not doing it. There are probably over a thousand on monthly random threads alone……

So, yeah. Today is the third day of school, I am mourning the loss of winter. Over break back home we had the weirdest weather. First week, through the weekend after Christmas, it was normal winter weather, a couple feet of accumulate snow, below freezing temperatures, the occasional below zero temp, but not significantly below. The friday after Christmas, it dropped to below -20, and for two solid weeks, it ranged anywhere from -20 to -30, closer to -30, more often than not….. Then within a couple days, the temp increased by 70 degrees, and we were having warm (yes, warm) 40 degree weather, within another couple days almost all the snow had melted, the side roads were solid ice, and it was pouring rain……Not fun for driving, not fun for walking out to the car. My arm still has a large mostly yellow spot now from where I slipped and fell and my arm collide very, very forcefully with the edge of the bottom stair. Still hurts if I poke it (yeah, don’t poke it, I know).

‘course, the thaw wasn’t that unusual, it always thaws out for a fewdays to a week in January, then drops back down, but the subzero was unusual in that it usually does not stay that cold for that long, at least not in the part of AK I”m from. I”m just glad I don’t live in Fairbanks–the temps there were -50 to -60, I believe……. They get the extremes: hot in summer (80s/90s, maybe even hotter, not sure), and very cold in winter.

And here the coldest it’s been since I got in Monday night is 25, and currently it is 49. Yup, not cold in the least, spring weather.

ANYWAY. Not the reason I’m writing……I’ve been avoiding comi ng on the last few days, cuz I”m afraid I will jsut be drawn back in to sitting at my computer hitting refresh 24/7, and that’s not probably good if I wanna get my stuff done for school. I have tons of reading, because I will have to actually read history, bioethics, chem (probably, if I want to do well), and english. And of course write english papers.

So, yeah. The reason I”m writing. So, I had chem lecture this morning, and our prof told us that determing the speed of light had in the past posed a huge problem for scientists. And he wanted us to do this little experiment and calculate it for ourselves. And, as my brain screamed seconds before he told us, “chocolate”! And as I muttered under my breath right before he himself said it.

So, he wants us to ‘wave chocolate, just like the Muse article said (and like he read about in a science journal). That is, it’s optional, and we can post our results online on the courses forum, but his instructions were kinda sketchy. Not very thorough, and not very well explained.

So what I’m asking is this: Could anyone type up the instructions or could one of the GAPAs email me a copy of that article? I looked it up, it is April 2008, but is unfortunately not one of the mags I have here, as it was pre-college, and unfortunately as I am thousands of miles away from home, I can’t just go hopme and get it…….Pretty please?

    I don’t supposed dark chocolate would work…..

Yeah, so Chihuahua is at it again. In PE last block today, we were playing volleyball, and I said “I call serving next” (it was a very random vball game) and she flipped. She said she already called it, so I was like “Sorry, I didn’t hear you.” So she served and then later I served and got us a point and was extremely happy. Then Leah called serving after… I forget who, maybe Shalee, and Chihuahua called after Leah. She gave me this really nasty look and said, “Did you hear that, Hannah?” I said as nicely as I could manage, “Yeah, I did. Sorry I didn’t hear you earlier, actually I might have called it before you but you didn’t hear me cuz I’m losing my voice, but it doesn’t matter.” At least that’s what I started to say. Chihuahua started flipping out again and screaming “DON’T TALK TO ME! I’M NOT LISTENING!” She was going crazy, so I was like, “[Chihuahua], STOP!” and I tried to put my hand on her shoulder, since she was running around in circles. That girl is certifiable. But of course she moved, and I’m not used to people being A FOOT SHORTER THAN ME, so it ended up looking like I hit her. She started screaming louder and I just ran. Then the evilus Mrs. Stewart who is Mr. Joe stopped me in the hall and started yelling at me and saying [Chihuahua] said I hit her. So I obviously said NO I DIDN’T! And she didn’t really say anything of interest after that so I don’t know what’s going to happen. I hate Chihuahua. Actually I think everyone does… my friend and I were just IMing about it. It’s like she isn’t happy till everyone else is really ticked at her.

  211. Cello-Playing Mathematician (AKA Kyra) says:

202- Instructions for Chocolate thing, copied mostly from Muse
Materials: Bar of cocolate (the longer the better)
    A metric ruler
    A microwave oven.
Procedure: Remove the turntable from your microwave oven–the bar of chocolate needs to be stationary. Put the chocolate in the oven and cook at a high temperature until it starts to melt in two or three spots–this usually takes abut 40 seconds. Because the chocolate is not rotating, the microwaves are not evenly distributed throughout the bar, and spots of chocolate will begin to melt in the high-intensity or “hotspot” areas. Remove the bar from the oven and measure the distance in centimeters between adjacent globs of melted chocolate.
    What’s Going On?
The frequencey of the microwaves is the key here. A standard microwave oven will probably have a frequency of 2.45 gigaherts (GHz). If your oven is 2.45 GHz, this means the microwaves oscillate 2,450,000,000 times a second. You will need to adjust this figure depending on your oven’s frequency, which should be printed on the back of the oven or in its instruction manual. (If the frequency is given in megahertz [MHz], you simply need to know that 1,000 MHz is equal to 1 GHz.) Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation and therefore travel at the speed of light. Once you know the frequency of the microwaves in your oven, finding out their wavelength will allow you to calculate how fast they are traveling.
This is where the chocolate comes in. The distance between the molten globs of chocolate is half the wavelength of the microwaves in your oven, so double the measurement you have taken of the gap between the molten globsto find the microwaves’ wavelength. In our microwave oven, the distance between the globs was six centimeters, so the wavelength in our 2.45 GHz oven is 12 centimeters.
To calculate the speed of light in centimeters per second, you need to multiply this wavelength by the frequency of the microwaves: 12 * 2,450,000,000 = 29,400,000,000, which is astoundingly near to the true speedd of light of 29,979,245,800 centimeters per second (or 299,792,458 meters per second, as it is usually expressed). Since scientists have universally adopted the metric system for measurements, the speed of light is defined in meters per second.
Try it yourself, measuring as accurately as possible to get a figure even nearer to the true speed. If your chocolate bar is chilled beforehand, the molten areas tend to be more bistinct when they first appear. Of course, you may find testing a variety of different chocolate bars, all of which taste delicious slightly melted, is an aid in your research. Dedicated scientist know that they must always double-check results.
    Editor’s Note:
Any scientist will tell you that most experiments fail the first time. Well, that certainly held true when Muse tried this experiment. Our first chocolate bar emerged from the microwave almost as soon as we’d put it in, alooking like a dog turd that had been in a volcano. Undeterred, we waved away the smoke, begged around the office for more chocolate, and kept going. After our third try, we had edible results and a rough approximation of the speed of light. We also had a few pieces of advice:
    1. Use the longest chocolate bars you can find.
    2. A solid bar is better than the kind scored into sections.
    3. Put your chocolate on a plate when you melt it; otherwise it will become a permanent fixture of your microwave.
    4. Keep a very close eye on your chocolate. It might start to melt after only a ffew seconds; open the door to check if you can’t tell.
    5. Whatever you do, DON’T use the tastiest-looking chocolate bar first.

I have a stupid microwave (which, coincidentally, was manufactured the same month that the chocolate bar article was printed in muse). It does not say the frequency on the back of it. After hunting all over the microwave, flipping through the instruction manual, and even digging the box out of the suitcase where it is being stored, then finally returning to the ‘wave, I found it, on a little sticker, that you ahve to open the door to see (but that is not actually in the microwave). it is 2450 MHz, so…..that makes life easy, being 2.450 GHz. SFTTP.

Piggy, in response to your question “How’s life in college again?” and assuming it isn’t a sarcastic, “we know all aobut you and your irritation with college life” question. (which the first time I read it, I read it as just asking how life is being back at college again, then I read it again, and decided it was ambiguous, and then my brain hurt and I didn’t ahve a clue…….yeah. Nothing seems to make any sense right now, hasn’t since school started. Probably still jet lagged.)

So, yeah……It really kinda sucks to be back at school, because it was so nice to be home, not have anything to worry about, just stay home, read, go to work a couple to a few days each week. Biggest thing I had to worry about was when two of our three cars broke down during the subzero weather and I had no way to get to work (I had no desire to walk at that temperature, although it is not too far in decent weather. I used to bike int he summer before I got my drivers license–that is, the first two months I worked there, when i was 16…..)

Mainly, I think I”m just jetlagged and tired from getting up early for classes (8 am class MWF, 9 am T/Th), and just stressed, what with it being the first week back, and not sure what to expect in all my courses. I think the first week is the worst: It’s all new courses, you don’t really know what to expect from any of your courses, and all the things you know you’ll have to do at some point during the course seem unbelievably overwhelming, and your brain is constantly screaming “How the heck am I going to manage to do all this, in the amount of time I have, and still get an A?????????” It’s like finals week, except without the reassurance that you currently are doing A work, and will almost certainly get a B at worst, no matter what your test grade…….

I have decided the first and last week of each semester are the worst…..and this is going to be a very reading (and writing) intensive semester. Except for one course (biomed terminology) which does not have any reading, I think I will have to read all the assigned stuff in every course (four others), and three of my courses involve a minimum of two papers (ok, not a lot, but when you add them all together, plus all the little minor writings I’ll have to do in English…..) (oh, yeah, history, eng, bioethics are the courses).

And chem is, I think, going to be very challenging, and I almost wish I hadn’t decided to take it (my AP score credits me out of all three of the “basic” chem courses required, but I am taking the seocnd one for a review). I am currently freaking out that I will not get a good grade, and I have to get a B minimum, because it is one of those required prevet courses (I can only get one C total in any of those, and it would suck to blow that C now, when I still have three years of harder coursework to go), and for my GPA, and A would be awesome, because I really want to keep my 4.0. Yes, I know, overachiever, but for what I want to do……it’s necessary.

So, yeah……that was probably more than you, or anyone else, really wanted to hear, but……I think it helps to vent, and hey–you don’t have to read it all……

today in bioethics we were discussing “distributive justice”. In other words, the fact that medical resources (organs, machines, specialized emergency surgery/surgeons) are limited, and how you decided who gets something and who doesn’t……

The teacher’s specific example in question (which he says actually happened, recently, I think) was there is this specialized surgeon, who performs surgery on peole with anneurisms or something like that, and he’s the only one around. So he gets this call one night, there’s this 70 year old woman, pillar of her community, good insurance, really rich, done so many great things, etc, etc who needs the surgery. so he head in, and seconds later he gets another call that there is a 15 year old boy in need of the surgery (and because he’s the only one, he can’t do both), but the 15 year old is the child of two Vietnamese grad students, who plan to go back to vietnam once they finish school….oh, yes, the kid’s parents I think don’t have much money.

So, the question is: who should get the surgery and why. So, we discussed this for a little while in class, and I think the discussion is going to continue Monday (8 am is not a good time for a class that requires participation and clearheadness)…..Needless to say, there really wasn’t a firm aghreement on anything, and I don’t think any of us really wanted to decide……

Our teacher was also talking about organ donors, and how only about 20% of americans are registered organ donors (they ask when you get your license, at least in most states). He specifically mentioned that 4,000 americans die waiting for transplants each year. Anyway, he said something about when motorcycle helmet laws were put into effect, the number of organs available for transplant went down significantly, causing more deaths, and that when many states repealed these lawas, motorbike deaths soared, and there were lots more available organs. But my thought, both when I read this in the “textbook” and when he said it, was somebody is dying either way. It’s the same about of deaths. Either a person dies waiting for a transplant, and the cyclist lives, or the cyclist dies and the transplant patient lives. Either way, someone dies, so how is it a good thing? (neither the text nor the teacher actually said it was good, but the way they stated the fact, it was almost like they were saying that this increase in organs was good–which yes, an increase in organs is good for those in need of them–but it’s still a life, regardless of whether it’s the transplant patient or the ‘cyclist………..)

    Yeah, so, enough about school…….

The review went well, I guess.
However, my “friend” completely ignored me the whole time I was there. She’s not really a best friend or anything, I certainly know that I’m nowhere near the top of her list, but it was still rather upsetting since she’s never been that rude before. One thing I know is that I’m not going to make an effort to be at reviews anymore if I’m just going to be ignored (her mom is our reviewer, that’s why I was at her house).

Ugh. I have other friends, but they all seem to be very far away. Muffy and Sarah are nearby but because of uncompatable schedules we don’t get to see each other very often. Some of my friends I haven’t seen for years.
The others I see rarely and many of them are adults.
I just wish that there could be some more people my age to hang out with who didn’t drop me whenever they wanted to.

ok, I’ve got a question. Why do things like: what obama’s wife wears to the inauguration, whether or not obama can use email, obama’s potential future dog, etc, etc, etc, none of which is truly newsworthy (regardless of what person they’re talking about, not just obama in particular) make headlines online (such as yahoo home page), but other, seemingly much more newsworthy things not?

For instance, the chinese boy who decapitated the chinese girl yesterday at Virginia Tech. Yup, decapitated, in one of the cafeterias with a kitchen knife. True story. google it.

And if they want to talk about Obama, ok, but don’t talk about him and his family’s clothes, talk about what policies he has or has not implemented, talk about something he’s actually done since becoming president, not about pointless garbage like what his wife wore at the inauguration. I’m sorry, but that’s not news, just like what anybody wears to, say, the Oscars isn’t news.

Are they those kind with the elastic strap around the back of your head, greenish tinged, and the actual goggle part pretty much suction cups to your face, leaving a big red ring when you take ’em off? I’ve used those kinds in previous chemistry classes, although it seems the goggles we have to wear for my college chem class can be the much nicer clear hard plastic ones…..of course, we have ugly purple plastic aprons we’ve got to wear.

My AP chem class that I took junior year in highschool (correspondence, as I was homeschooled) actually had “cute” black lab aprons. That is, they weren’t bulky and ugly and loose, but if you tied the string at the waist tight, the whole thing was kinda snug and form fitting and, well, for a lab apron, it was pretty dang cute. (yup, i’m weird)

I hate uneven, crumbly eyeliner (ahem, this means you, CoverGirl and Hot Topic brands!).

277-Try getting a black cloak with a hood, sweeping edges and flaring sleeves from your local New Age store and dying it white. Almost anyone looks sexy in a cloak and the right amount of eyeliner. :)

As usual I am only dropping by and therefor have no time to read the previouse posts. I hope everyone is well. I am busy, of course. Busier than usual in fact. I decided to, for a project, write a short comic. It has eaten up my time. Consider this: each page is representative of about two hours of work. Every pannel is a miniature painting. I have never, before, truly understood what Mark Oakley did for “The Wandering Mage”. He is quite skilled with the watercolours and seeing as his comic was not abstract but had both setting and a sense of time, why each page must have taken him hours! I must say the most tedious part of the comic-making process is the inking. Spending an hour or so on drawing exactly the same thing over again. Never, I repeat, never assume that creating comics is easy. It is wonderful work. You should only attempt creating something big if you have the perseverance to pull it off. I still have four pages to write, ink and paint, although I am not sure if that is necessairy. The comic seems complete, though I do not feel the message has quite been portrayed properly. Well, I’ve wasted enough words moaning. Have an excelent week. I shall see you in a while.

315- No. I was referring to Tiffany and Laney, the notorious hate-mailers. *touches iron, crosses fingers*

318 – Oh, yeah, I read their letter in an old Muse from the library. I can’t remember the exact wording, but they called Musers “nerds” and complained about the picture in the race article of “boys and girls standing around a light in their granny underwear”.

304 – My team’s as well, this year. We’re such slackers in high school. In middle school last year, we made it to states, though. I placed fourth in Bio Process lab! My school was eighth overall–not bad, considering the first six places receive trophies. Our regionals trophy is named Freddy.

I had fun today. Muffy came over and we decided to go to the floodplane and hang out near the bridge. There was some rather thick ice under it, so it became a challenge to see if we could break it (really mature, I know) which ended in getting bigger and bigger sticks until we got one large enough to actually break through the ice, that’s when we realized that it was 3 inches thick! There’s documentation in the form of fuzzy cell phone videos of us banging away on the ice with this log that I found……’twas vastly amusing and totally pointless.
Then, because it was about 30 degrees (F) and we were both just wearing sweatshirts (smart) we realized that we couldn’t feel our noses so we came up and watched Love Actually in my room. Then Mom taught us how to make stir fry. Good day and I’m really tired.

  323. I made chocolate-chip oatmeal cookies using Purple Panda and THF’s family recipe (thanks, Pan!). They were a great hit with my father and with my play-reading group.
