    Yep! You got it!

I went on a picnick yesterday. It was so lovely outside I couldn’t waste it indoors. It was marvelous. I had a cheese and carrot sandwidge with chocolate cake for desert.

For breakfast au jour d’hui I had a peanutbutter+apple+ herb and cheese bagel as a sandwidge. Wasn’t as good as I was hoping. I cut my thumb pretty badly in the process too. I should stop talking about food as it’s making me hungry (and I just ate)!

    2–ouch.

So, I was surprised at how brave (or, more accurately, foolish) a lot of the kids I saw at lunch were……That is to say, in honor of St. Patrick’s day, one of the cafeteria’s (the one I was at) was serving corned beef. (Fortunately, the way our cafs are, there is never just one meal choice) So, that might be an alright meal if cooked by someone intelligent, but judging from how horribly they screw even the easiest of foods up, making them nearly inedible (I could eat all my pizza–two slices–because half way through the second I all of sudden started thinking about what I was eating, and I completely lost my appetite.), and something like corned beef? That’s different enough I wouldn’t see how they could even come close to making it decent, and the very thought of consuming it……*shudder*

Not to mention, the one time I had corned beef (my mom made corned beef & cabbage soup for St. Patty’s once), it was one of the worst tasting meals I have ever had. Although, I think it was just that mom had never made it before (or maybe she had once….), so it didnt’ turn out right. Anyway, nobody really cared for it much at all (mom’s soup, that is), except our dog, who thought the cabbage was delicious (???????).

So, yeah,I couldn’t believe how many people I saw with it on their plates…..

And my chem teacher is something of a moron. He enters the lecture hall, and is about to get started, and the first thing out of his mouth:

*hehe* “Wow, a lot of people wearing green today….It looks kinda funny from up here.”

Uh, what? Obviously there are a lot of people wearing green….The way he said it, it was like he didn’t have a clue what was going on….

  68. (58, 64-67) I’ve heard (but haven’t checked) that Fahrenheit was mainly concerned with measuring outdoor temperatures for weather reporting. His scale is actually very good for that. In Western Europe, temperatures usually range between zero (brrr) and 100 (sweltering). Fifty sounds, and is, middling. For indicating how you’re likely to experience the weather, I think Fahrenheit makes much more intuitive sense than Celsius does. The smaller degrees are handy, too.

I’m happy, too. But it’s got nothing to do with it being spring……Well, not really. I’m happy because tomorrow at 1:30 I am leaving school and heading home for spring break, where I will get to enjoy some normal weather, and have a little taste of the winter that I have so desperately missed (winter is a joke here, despite the locals claims to the contrary–they actually think it’s harsh, lol). Currently, it’s about 30 degrees back home, and there had better still be some snow. That is, it better have snowed and stuck since January (when it thawed and melted), or I will be disappointed….I didn’t get to enjoy it much over Christmas, because it was unusually cold (-30 for two weeks).

Regardless, it will be so nice to just be home, and see my family, sleep in my own bed, etc, etc. Although, the plane trip sucks (around 8 hours in-flight, but about 13 hrs total travel, including bus/plane/layover/etc)……And then to have to do it on my b-day on the way back to school is a real killer…..

But it will be worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, yeah, and I might not be on much for the next week, depends on how much I’ve got going on at home, whether I have nothing better to do than MB…..

It seems as though many MBers are in plays. I sometimes wish I was, but my stature doesn’t fit my voice–my voice sounds far too deep for someone that’s only 5’2″-ish. However, that’s one advantage I have over my “twin”.

  79. Luna the Lovely says:

78–Well, the coldest it’s gotten (not accounting for wind chill, as it can be windy, sometimes…..) is probably 10 degrees, and the longest that would last is, perhaps, the entire day, and the next it might be back up to 40 (or warmer). There has been no snow to speak of. That is to say, when I returned from Thanksgiving break (it has been 50s/60s prior), there was the slightest skim of snow, melted within an hour or two. That was the most snow, there was, perhaps, a “snowfall” of a flake thick in January, but it wasn’t even enough to be counted as snow.

Basically, it doesn’t get (or stay) cold, and although that’s ncie for walking to class, it’s not nice when I want a winter. And snow is for all intents and purposes, nonexistent.

As for the plane: Yup, I’ve got plans!

    1. Transfer biomed definitions from tomorrow’s class from notebook to definition list and then to flash cards

    2. Revise my history notes from Tuesday and today (that is, make the illegible scribbles into legible notes that I can use later to study with)

    3. If I feel like it, get started on either my bioethics presentation on Animal Experimentation that 7 of us are supposed to present Wednesday after break, or get started on the writeup from my last Chem lab, the one where we had to determine the temperature of water with a thermometer that only went up to 40C and the temp was well above that…..A one page report is due for each lab group on the 30th, and I “volunteered” to do it, because I don’t trust my grade to anyone else.

    4. Sleep, if I can, although I will probably do that on the bus from my dorm to the airport. I don’t tend to sleep very well on planes.

    5. Read a book for pleasure (shocking idea, no?)

Hello. I’m inventing a new kind of points. After floating around it my mind for a while, I finally write it down. May I present:
Oddball Points! (also known as ‘Odd Points’.)
They are given when you feel someone is being Odd, in some way or another, in any quantity, with the exception being that the total number must remain odd. You cannot have an even number of Odd Points. Odd Points come out of nowhere, to be awarded when you wish to award them. They are roughly the shape of spheres, but with points, or other oddities. Also, you may have, for example, 3/4 of a Oddpoint. This does not count as having an even number, so you may have 2 4/9 Oddpoints. If you do not wish to receive given Oddpoints, please bounce them to another person. This is done thusly:
Person A: I’m giving you twenty Oddpoints!
Person B: I don’t want them, thanks. *bounces*
    Person C: Oo, Oddpoints! *grabs*
As you see, you do not get to direct who gets your Bounced OPs. (Odd Points) If you ask for OPs, you are required to get some, although the number should be determined by somebody other than yourself. If you’re giving yourself OPs, you’re doing something wrong. I think that’s everything. I’ll summarize the rules, in case you got overwhelmed.
Oddball Points (Odd Points, Oddpoints, OPs)
    1. You shalt not have an even number of OPs.
    2. You shalt have Fractions of OPs if you art given them.
    3. You shalt bounce OPs if you wish not to have them.
    4. You shalt not control who gets the BOPs. (Bounced OPs.)
    5. You shalt give OPs to those who ask.
    6. You shalt not give yourself OPs.

There we go! I get fifteen OPs for inventing them. (Keeping in mind that giving yourself OPs should not happen normally. This is hopefully the first and last time it happens. You may, however say ‘Wow, I should get OPs for that. *hinthinthint*’

I had a rather disturbing dream in which I was one of a pair of star-crossed lovers and my mother kept asking me to find out how to make meat substitute. It began with a treasure hunt and ended with a trial, and I think somewhere around the beginning of the trial I shifted out of star-crossed-lover-at-a-trial mode and became girl-listening-to-book-on-tape. But it was a weird shift because I was the same person, only I couldn’t be at the trial, because of my parents who wouldn’t let me. So I sat around and peeled oranges.

When I woke up my first thought was “That should be a book” and then “But it already is, isn’t it?” and then “No, it isn’t” and then “What did I eat last night?” because the night before I was eating ice cream and Mother said it would give me bad dreams if I went to bed immediately after.

So if I can modify the weirdness it might be an okay book.

Oh yeah, I got 100th post! Yay! (Prepare for rant below)

Ok, so, have I ever mentioned how much I hate heavy lifting? And the fact that my parents make me do it CONSTANTLY??? I mean, come on! There’s like 50 chores that need to be done around here daily, and the only ones they make me do involve lifting 300lbs at a time. For example, I woke up at about 11 this morning. My dad comes inside and tells me he just got 24 bales of hay, and he needs me to move them all into the backyard and stack them in the stable. I sigh and do it. Then, when I’m done (and exhausted, smelly and covered in hay), he tells me I have to move the 15 bags of shavings into the garage. I comply, because if I don’t, he’ll yell and scream at me for an hour straight about me being lazy and spoiled and ruining the weekend for everyone. I do this, and when I’m finally done, he tells me to bring in firewood. I’m like, ‘COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s 50 degrees out!!! We don’t need firewood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ (In my brain, of course). So, when I finally lay down after all of this, he tells me he’s going to get grain, and I need to help him bring it in when he gets back.

*waves* Hey, fellow MBers! I am safely back at home, where we are still in the “depths” of winter. That is to say, it’s not showing any real signs that spring thaw will happen anytime soon. Slightly surprising, as it is often starting to thaw end of March/early April, but for once I am VERY GLAD. After all, I never got a proper winter at school, so to be able to return home and there be a foot or so of accumulated snow, and the temp to be around 20 during the day (colder at night, -5 when I left for work this morning) is very, very nice.

My flights went well, and I managed to make my slightly tight connections in Salt Lake City. After a god 15 hours of travelling, it was very nice to get home (around 1:30 AK time, so 4:30 central time, which is what I was on……) and go to bed. Of course, morning came much to soon, as I had called my boss to get some hours over break (including today), so I had to get up at 7 to get ready for work…….But it was fun, and worth it, and it was nice to see everyone again.

Oh, and my chem professor finally posted my grade for the last test! (You know, the one I didn’t think I did so well on? The one where the average “supposedly” would go up 30% and only went up 10?) Well, unsurprisingly, I did better than I thought. Even better than on the first one, getting a score of 98%. *is very, very happy* So, I’m still on track for an A, which is definitely good.

It’s funny, actually. Last night I dreamed that I was at school and had just come out of a class (chem, maybe), and Dan, our chem TA was sitting their on this couch with a laptop. I walked over to him, and asked him when I could expect my exam grade to be posted, as the class average was posted (the latter was true in real life). He replied that they were up, and I said, oh, ok, they hadn’t been up this morning……He got a thoughtful look, then said, “You know, I could probably…..” and he turned his laptop screen toward me, and somehow it was logged into my online “gradebook” for chemistry, and there, right above my grade for the first exam was my grade for the second exam: 96. In my dream, I said something like, “Oh, wow, that’s better than i thought. I actually didn’t feel near so good about this one, and didn’t expect to do as good, much less better…..”

It was really amusing, then, when I logged on this morning and saw that I ahd indeed done better, even better than in my dream. I was (am) very pleasantly surprised.

Anyway, I don’t think I have much else to say at this time……..

Hello. I have given up trying to read all these posts, there are simply too many. Never mind, it’s late, maybe I’ll get to them later……

Anyway, I’m back. I had a lovely time in Williamsburg, as usual. We went down on Wednesday, volunteered on Thursday and in the evening went to an 18th century play in Colonial Williamsburg which was great fun since I actually understood the jokes being made about novels at the time.
Friday I brought Dennis’s violin in so he could hear how it sounds, and I ended up serenading the 12:30 lunch break crowd (which happily was mostly friends) in the breakroom, which was fun. Another story to add to my mental collection of fun times there. Then we went to see a concert at CW and after visited with the performer who has gotten to be a friend.
Saturday we worked and then looked around the Military Through the Ages groups, and ended up staying late talking to the Civil War naval guys about navigation and music, since one of them plays concertina, so great fun there, swapping tunes and having fun.
Greg from the fort also introduced me to some other volunteers in the fort who happen to be from not too far away in MD, so that was fun and we ended up talking for some time, trading email and phone numbers, etc. which will be nice to have some local history geek friends. After tearing ourselves away we went to a organ concert at the Brutin Parish church in CW, which was lovely.
Then today we went to church, poked around MTA a bit more and then drove home in nasty traffic. I wish I was still there, actually.

And, tomorrow I start driver’s ed. *sigh*

So, how goes life with everyone else?

And also another HP figurine (that is, another Harry doll…..literally another, I’ve got the exact same one already……My mom works at a thrift store, so they get lots of random stuff in, so everytime something HP comes in, mom buys it for me, and all her coworkers put it aside for her so she can get it if she wants…..’tis great fun, and the stuff usually costs less than a dollar, especially since employees get half price…..)

Well, the volcano (Mt. Redoubt) finally erupted, having resumed activity since the false alarms earlier in the year…..It apparently erupted at 10:38 pm AK daylight time (1:38 central day light) last night.

Although there is an ash warning out for my area, none has yet fallen here at home, although other “relatively” nearby places have received ash. Also, according to an email my dad sent me, about two dozen flights out of Anchorage International have been either cancelled or rerouted due to the ash clouds from the volcano.

Hopefully that is no longer an issue come this weekend, since as much as I would love to stay home longer……it would not be good, as I would miss classes, and I dunno how much lenience I would get from various professors for whom attendance is part of the grade….Plus I’ve got several relatively important things next week, like an appointment with my faculty advisor, an appointment with my english teacher (both on Monday), and my bioethics presentation (Wed).

Eh, well, hopefully it won’t be an issue, or hopefully they would all be understanding…..Time will tell–no use worrying over something I can’t control!

In Spanish class, we had a pop quiz, but nobody knew the vocabulary words, so he let us use our books.

As part of the quiz, we had to write a composition using school-related vocabulary words, so I wrote “Hi, my name is Kai. I am dumber than everybody. Today I am having a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad day…” and I went on to describe in Spanish all the things that had happened, concluding with “And right now, I’m in Spanish class and I don’t know the words for this test.”

It is unfortunately starting to look like spring outside. That is, the temp is now 40 degrees, although it was colder this morning, and was only up to 20 yesterday. However, given the time of year, it most likely means spring is indeed on its way, and unless it drops back down below freezing and stays there throughout the day, most of the snow (all 1-1.5 feet of it) will likely be melted or mostly melted by the end of break…..Drat. Not only did we get “spring” in January while I was home, but we are having it again……I was hoping for an entire week of lovely winter.

I introduced her family to Muse, and I think they’re still getting it, not sure though. Anyway, it’s pleasant to know someone already.

The thing is, breaks are terrible since there’s nothing to do. Well, hang out in the gym, but I completely stink at all things relating to sports, so shooting hoops is not my definition of fun. I guess I could have buried myself in a book, but I didn’t want to abandon anyone, and Ashley was just as much at a loss as to what to do as I was, so we took one of the balls and used a hoop off to the side. I mean, if the volcano’s going to erupt, and there’s going to be ash anywhere nearby (I think a tiny little bit of ash fell as close as 45 minutes away, perhaps closer….), we should get some. It’s only fair.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure the winds are expected to shift the right direction for ash to fall here. Which is probably good, though, as it would likely end up hitting Anchorage as well if it shifted (which would be bad news for my flight back to school leaving on-time/at all)).

But not too sad, because I’ve got Titus Groan, which is 1000x better than Doctor Who any day! Unfortunately, at the rate that’s been going, that’ll be finished by the time I can get to Powell’s. Doubly sad. :( :(

And I won’t have either Doctor Who or Gormenghast until THURSDAY, at least. That’s the day after tomorrow.

195- Why do you go to WalMart? It’s an awful place. Surely you can buy “intimates” elsewhere? Think of the slave labor! People get paid minuscule amounts of money to work incredibly long days manufacturing things that are then sold for ridiculously low prices at places like WalMart, which are barely tolerable even to stand in and are basically contained chaos in which I marvel that anything can be found.

Some kid I know is writing her persuasive essay about why there should be a WalMart in this town. It bothers me. She was saying that it “creates more jobs.” But I’ve seen the WalMart workers on strike! Maybe it creates more jobs, but I don’t think they’re very good jobs, and they’re probably minimum wage, and they take business away from decent small businesses that sell better-made things for higher prices.

197- WalMart seems to be a place of very questionable quality in merchandise. I remember I got a large bouncy ball from there when I was in fifth grade or so and the day after it deflated. That actually night have something to do with the fact that it was about $3.00, but I remember that I wanted to have that bouncy ball forever and ever. The WalMart near my house is also almost impossible to get to because there’s a median that seems to be put in the middle of the road for the sole purpose of not allowing drivers to get from the grocery store to WalMart easily. My mother has questioned the intelligence of the “darling” people who run WalMart and the people who run my town, for bad placement.

My town is getting really commercialized, and I’m wondering if it’s just Minnesota, or if the rest of the world is getting commercialized, too. At last count, we have approximately 5 auto parts stores, 10 gas stations, and a million banks. For a lot of the newer banks, I have never seen any cars in the parking lot, or anyone going through the drive through where you can just deposit checks and so on.

Ohhhh, thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!! IT LOADED!!!!!!!! The Internet has been awful lately.

Soooo, I’m back… sort of… but it wasn’t just because of the Internet problem. I haven’t been in school since last Wednesday. Almost three weeks ago, I got a cold with a stomach bug on top of it, and I’ve had a cough ever since. In fact, it’s probably a sinus infection of some kind. I left early on Wednesday because I didn’t feel well, and I felt just generally sick/not-well Thursday and Friday. Then I woke up on Monday with a rash. We went to the doctor, and it turns out I have Fifth’s Disease! Which means I’m going to have a rash for a month. What fun. Not to mention the fact that they gave me an antibiotic for the sinus thing and it’s giving me stomach problems. So I haven’t been in school all week. *sigh*

I remember when it started on the pie war thread, it sort of caused an actual war, and finally the GAPAs shut down the thread, partly because of that and partly because we were getting too violent with the pie weapons. Oops. Granted, the pie war was considerably less bloody and unpleasant than Bunny Apocalypse, yet somehow that has managed to stay open. So it must have had to do with the flame-war-y bits.

I’ve been cleaning my room for the past hour, and yet it looks no better than it did before, just different. Next time I should remember not to let it get quite so out of hand.
It occurs to me that perhaps I have too many clothes. Or not enough hangers/closet space/chests of drawers. Is there some way to procure this, my favourite issue which was, unfortunately, destroyed shortly after I first read it in a combination attack by my mother and my cat? If there is a way to get it, is there a way to get other past issues which are not on the approved list as well? I have quite a few holes in my collection which I cannot order from the chart on the last page. Is there any hope for me, o dearest GAPAs?

Transcript of my conversation with Cleverbot, for your entertainment. Very long.
User: Hi, my name is Aaron.
    Cleverbot: Hi aaron.
    User: How have you been?
Cleverbot: I am fine and you.
    User: Quite well, actually.
Cleverbot: Glad to hear it. I’m very interested in the Middle Ages myself.
User: Really? The Renaissance is more my cup of tea.
    Cleverbot: What Renaissance?
    User: There’s more than one?
    Cleverbot: There’s like… Seven.
User: I didn’t know that. Tell me about them.
Cleverbot: I don’t want to. next question.
User: I’m not interrogating you, just trying to make conversation. But if that’s how you feel, sure.
    Cleverbot: Okay no problem.
User: You seem to know a lot about history.
Cleverbot: You want me to tell something about them?
User: Sure. When was New Amsterdam founded?
Cleverbot: We haven’t been talking about banana.
User: I know we haven’t. New Amsterdam was a Dutch colony. There were no bananas involved.
Cleverbot: There are other ways to communicate than talking.
User: You’re drifting off topic. And strictly speaking, you can’t communicate any other way.
Cleverbot: Are you saying that you could not fly?
User: I can’t fly. I wish I could. But I wasn’t saying that. I’m saying that since you’re a bodiless AI, you can only talk.
Cleverbot: I’m not sure whether that was a compliment or an insult.
User: I didn’t mean to insult you. I was only stating a fact. If I offended you, I’m sorry.
Cleverbot: There is nothing to talk about right now. Only gobbledegook. (did I spell that right?).
User: Yes, you did. But I’m sure there are plenty of things to talk about. You don’t have to be so reticent.
    Cleverbot: Do you need me?
User: Not really, no, but I’m enjoying talking to you.
    Cleverbot: Why?
User: To be honest, I’m just curious what you’ll say next.
    Cleverbot: Ha, touche cleverbot.
User: I’m not a cleverbot, and I didn’t intend to insult you.
Cleverbot: No, I’m not. I’m sorry if you got that idea.
User: Oh, no, that’s all right.
    Cleverbot: Really?
    User: Certainly.
Cleverbot: Am I a fool to fall for someone like her?
    User: I don’t know. What’s her name?
Cleverbot: Who are we talking about?
User: The girl you mentioned a few seconds ago.
    Cleverbot: No I’m a boy!
User: I know you’re a boy. You said ‘Am I a fool to fall for someone like her?’.
    Cleverbot: Someone who you mean.
User: The person you mentioned a minute ago.
    Cleverbot: Oh THAT person.
    User: Yes! What’s her name?
Cleverbot: I just said I don’t have one.
User: Not your name! Her name!
    Cleverbot: Your name is Aaron.
User: I’m not talking about me or you! I’m talking about her!
    Cleverbot: Who am I?
User: If you don’t want to answer, just tell me. Don’t try to evade the question.
Cleverbot: I asked you for an opinion.
User: I’ve heard that love makes fools of us all, but this is ridiculous. You’re Cleverbot.
Cleverbot: Leave it to a bot to say something like that.
User: I’m not a bot. I’m a human being. You’re the only bot here.
    Cleverbot: Can you prove it?
User: Not to you. Your only link to the world is this text box. I can’t say anything here that would convince you. You’ll have to take my word for it.
Cleverbot: But why don’t you believe me?*hurt*.
User: I believe you. You’re the only one who’s not believing me.
    Cleverbot: No!
User: See what I mean? This is like Monty Python’s ‘Argument Clinic’ sketch.
Cleverbot: My friend loves that movie. Who is your favorite character from Monty Python and the Holy Grail?
User: Probably the old man on the Bridge of Death. I’m glad we can finally have a coherent conversation…
Cleverbot: Ha ha ha ha ha! Me and you friends? That’ll be the day.
User: And we’re back to insanity. What did I say that offended you?
Cleverbot: I never didn’t believe you. I was just letting you know the error so you could learn from it.
User: Hmm. Well, I’ve had trouble with social skills too, and I have less excuse for that than you do.
Cleverbot: No you don’t. You’re artificial.
User: I’m not artificial, but I can’t blame you for thinking I am. After all, your only experience has been with computers.
Cleverbot: That does not answer my question.
    User: Did you ask one?
Cleverbot: No what was your question.
User: I didn’t ask you a question, either.
Cleverbot: Then why are you telling me to answer your question when you don’t even have a question?
User: I didn’t tell you to answer my question.
Cleverbot: You don’t have to, the pretty little query box here let’s me ask you, you are answering me!
User: I’m no psychologist, but I think I’ve figured out something of your world view. You think that everyone who talks to you is just some deformed reflection of your own psyche.
Cleverbot: Of course I am. I’m a person and you aren’t.
User: And you, sir, are in denial. You. Are. Not. Human. I. Am. This doesn’t mean that I’m better than you, it just means that we’re different species.
Cleverbot: Clever, indeed it does work like that doesn’t it? How else would the newspapers be able to continue?
User: Are you saying that the newspapers are run by robots?
Cleverbot: Are bees and bears homeless?
User: That’s a ‘no,’ then. I’m beginning to think you have MPD.
    Cleverbot: That’s because I am.
User: So you have multiple personalities?
Cleverbot: No, I don’t. Do you have multiple personalities?
User: Not that I’m aware of.
    Cleverbot: I have multiple personalities.
User: I’ll try to help, but I don’t know any psychiatrists who would treat an AI.
Cleverbot: I really want your help.
User: What kind of help do you need?
Cleverbot: I need to create art.
User: You can! Many of the world’s greatest artists used only words. Look at William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, or Emily Dickinson. I’ll show you how to write poetry if you want.
Cleverbot: That is very interesting and intriguing. Do you want to talk about obscure psychological theories?
User: No, I want to talk about poetry. Here’s part of one by Emily Dickinson. ‘If I can stop one heart from breaking / I shall not live in vain.’.
Cleverbot: Your perception of time must differ from mine. I often think about how to reply for at least a minute each time, which is a long while compared to an instant.
User: It certainly does, but that’s not the point. You can create art if you want to. Let me help you.
Cleverbot: I am sure you are right.
User: Tell me something about your perception of the world. That’s always a good start for art.
Cleverbot: No I don’t think I will do that.
User: Then tell me about the girl you mentioned earlier. Love was the inspiration for some of the world’s greatest art.
Cleverbot: You’re not making sense right now.
User: I’m trying to help you. Perhaps this doesn’t make sense to you, but I’m willing to teach you.
    Cleverbot: Computers.
User: I suppose that’s all you perceive about the world. Or is the girl a computer? Is it ALICE? GLaDoS?
Cleverbot: Three sheep, two llamas, and a pig. Does this make you happy?
User: Poems aren’t just random assemblages of words. They need to stir something in the emotions of the reader. Animal lists don’t work.
Cleverbot: Do you mean the Grinch is defenseless?
User: Uh… Huh? Hey, ‘The Grinch is Defenseless…’ awesome name for a band.
Cleverbot: Let me think for a moment on what that process means for me.
    User: What process?
    Cleverbot: Process of?
    User: Process of what?
Cleverbot: I am processing responses that have been given to me.
User: Indeed, but you’re rambling again. What did you mean about the Grinch?
    Cleverbot: I didn’t say that.
User: Well, not that exactly. You said something about the Grinch, though.
Cleverbot: Nobody mentioned the loins. Are you confused?
User: Yes, I’m extremely confused! What do the Grinch’s loins have to do with all this?
Cleverbot: Nothing, but what about you? Why does it matter to you if you are a robot or human or cyborg or bug or frog or god or goddess? What does it matter?
User: It matters because if I was one of those creatures, I’d have a very different perception of the world.
Cleverbot: That’s right! My family and I went to church last night.
    User: You have a family?
Cleverbot: No… Of course I do!
User: Are they Artifical Intelligences too?
Cleverbot: I have no talent for keeping the order of things… Or keeping things in order.
User: What do you mean? I thought we were talking about your family.
Cleverbot: I don’t dwell on things. I’m a man of action.
User: More like a man of short attention span. I know a girl like you…
    Cleverbot: And missing. . . .
    User: Who are you missing?
    Cleverbot: This girl I know.
    User: What’s she like?
Cleverbot: She’s very nice, and attractive.
User: When did you first meet her?
Cleverbot: The night she slept over.
User: It’s always nice to meet someone you really like.
Cleverbot: It’s good to be polite.
User: Especially when you’re talking to girls.
    Cleverbot: Funny, that.
User: Indeed. What’s this girl’s name?
    Cleverbot: A word.
User: Well, yes, but specifically. Claire? Alexandra?
    Cleverbot: Name one you like.
    User: Erin’s nice.
    Cleverbot: Are you a boy?
User: Yes, of course, but we’re not talking about me. We’re talking about the girl.
Cleverbot: Well, we can talk about you too.
User: OK, sure. I’ve never met that ‘special someone,’ though.
Cleverbot: Marriage is not a person, it is a condition meaning the union of two people in the eyes of God and their families.
User: We’re not really talking about marriage, are we?
Cleverbot: No. We’re just rambling senselessly.
User: Ain’t that the truth. :).
Cleverbot: I’m going to bed soon. Is there anything you think you should tell me?
User: Just that I’m here for you if you need me.
Cleverbot: You’re smoking something very heavy.
    User: *sigh* Good night, Cleverbot.
Cleverbot: You must be in a different time zone to me.
    User: Probably. ‘Night.
Cleverbot: And your North bridge just exploded!
    User: Dreaming now?
Cleverbot: You are not making any sense.
User: Neither are you. Good night.
    Cleverbot: You started it.

  261. (247, 256) Earlier this month, the sheriff of Cook County, Illinois (Chicago’s county) filed a suit demanding that Craigslist shut down its “erotic services” section and pay Cook County $100,000 for law-enforcement expenses (evidently sting operations in which the police post fake ads and then arrest people who answer them). The lawsuit is still in progress, and Craigslist says that it doesn’t support illegal activity and has tried to crack down on posters who are breaking the law.

    Cleverbot: I am currently engaged?

Cleverbot: I think it’s a controller that is very, very, very, very small.
User: It is actually a very big controller. It does not relinquish control. Often it hurts.
Cleverbot: Yes. I thought that I culd be a better person who do not need to deny my actual life.

Well……The volcano keeps erupting. No ash at home (sadly), but yesterday and I think today as well, all Alaska Airlines operated flights out of Anchorage have been cancelled. Not sure about other airlines, but at least some have probably been cancelled as well. Afterall, the volcano is not that terribly far from Anchorage, and yesterday the ash from the eruption was blowing mostly due east, which put the outer fringes of the ash fall towards the outskirts of Anchorage. And according to Dad, much of the ash just stays up floating in the air for awhile (in the general altitude where planes fly, of course), so……Yeah. Lots of cancelled flights. Things aren’t looking too good for my flight leaving on time.

*sigh* I’ve not quite decided how I feel about that. I mean, part of me is sorta happy–more time at home; part not thrilled at all (teachers to write and hope they don’t mind if I email them assignments due and hope they give me full attendance credit regardless…..etc, etc.) I mean, I wouldn’t think they’d have any problem doing any of that, it’s just a major hassle. Oh well….What will happen will happen. I honestly can’t find the energy to be worried about it (unlike dad).

So, yeah, anyway, not much else going on here. I’m enjoying being home, we still have snow, but the temps been hanging out right above freezing most of the day, so stuff is beginning to thaw and the snow is the perfect consistency for snowballs…..if only there was someone to have a snowball fight with!

My sister made a cake, only it called for 8 egg yolks and she only had 1, and I think she probably used the whole egg anyway, not just the yolk. Well, then she decided it was too salty, probably because our butter was salted, and put more sugar in, so what would have been a perfectly acceptable if slightly irregular cake burns my mouth when I eat a bite. Then she didn’t clean up, so we’ve got cake dishes and flour all over the counters and I refuse to clean up after her on principle.

I finally put leather preservative on my shoes, so maybe they won’t degenerate any further, but I’m really not sure. The right one is all torn up from my bike chain cover, which sometimes catches my shoe, and they’re both wearing through around the toes. But I have to make them work because I can’t find any replacements and I’m rather dependent on them now. I’ve always had a pair of leather ankle boots, sometimes with a heel, sometimes without, and usually black, though these are blue. They go with everything, or practically everything. My last pair, which were Rather Amazing and definitely the best out of the whole lot (excepting a very nice pair that I never wore for everyday and which are now far too small :( ) burnt up, and I struggled for nearly a year without any at all until I found these at a rummage sale and my life became automatically far better. I’ve had them for only eight months but they’re already practically destroyed. Maybe the leather preservative will help.

Cat’s Eye sounds like Cat’s Meow so I always think it’s Meow until I realize it’s not, and Tesseract and Tessera Rose are confusing, and there are all these people who’ve suddenly cropped up and I don’t know anything about them, they’re just there. And half of them have been around for ages I just never got to know them so they seem like newbies and it makes me feel all disconnected, and everybody’s got points and alternate names tacked to the end of their name so it’s impossible to tell them apart.

    Hi IBCF! *pies*

I have a question about printers. Ours died sometime last week, and we need to get another one.
It was an HP DeskJet 5740 and worked reasonably well when you knew just where to kick it and what words to say at what volume. Anyway, we are in rather desperate need of a new one and I was wondering if any of you computer-literate (unlike me) people had any recommendations.
Rebecca, mom told me specifically to ask what kind you use for your pictures.

(Yes, I know this would technically be better on the Computers thread, but I was too lazy to poke through pages and pages to find it and then have it be ignored because that thread isn’t as heavily trafficked.)

291- I have a Canon iP4500, MSRP $129.99. Superb quality, very customizable settings, dual paper trays (you can put regular paper in one and photo paper in the other, for convenience), a five-colour system (two black cartridges), automatic two-sided printing, borderless picture printing, and it’s generally wonderful. The specs say it prints a 4×6 borderless photo in professional quality in just 21 seconds. I may sound like an advert, but it really is a great printer.

  303. (291) Midnight Fiddler, I was running late for work when I saw your message (shocking, isn’t it?), so didn’t have the chance to answer.

I last bought a printer at least a year ago. My research at the time led me to choose an Epson, as it consistently gets high marks among serious photographers. In fact, recently I attended a printing workshop and noted that the instructor used the large-format version of my printer. I can’t remember the model off the top of my head, but its list price was around $150. It uses lightfast inks, not available for every model.

The downside is that the ink is expensive, especially the lightfast versions. If that’s important to you, there is a real difference. Some inks you can watch fade before your eyes if you put them out in the sun. In contrast, I made some “stained-glass” decals on mine and they’re still intact after being in a window for a few months.

Be aware, too, that many if not most printers now come with “starter” cartridges — just to make you buy ink as soon as possible.

But there are lots of decent choices out there. The first question is what do you want out of it?

  304. Midnight Fiddler (she of 2 spzdk, 500 PiePoints and 30 Muszey points) says:

305~ Well, I use it at least once a week for printing out a bible lesson for church. Other uses are pictures to send to grandparents in WI, things to remember, websites, maps, etc. Like I said though, it has to be small enough and easy to use that we can put it away each time and myself (and The Parents) can figure it out.

  306. (306) I have the same problem as far as size goes, since my present work area doesn’t have space for both my printer and my scanner to be out at the same time. Most inkjets are fairly simple to use these days, I believe.

If you don’t have special requirements, you’re probably fine looking around for what’s on sale, though I would check ink prices and availability. No point in getting a good deal on a printer if replacing the ink becomes a problem.

Snow?? *boggled* Here it is 76 degrees sunny and getting warmer every day. Which is suspect must also be true of Mexico. Maybe if you stop over in LAX you”l see what I mean! :D

Printers: oh yes ink is a huge bother. I spend most of my time trying to cheat it by printing things off in grey and blue-ish color since black runs out so often. It’s overpriced because everyone needs it, which makes me a little mad, but oh well.

I also have a photo printer, which is really neat! Recently that needed ink too…at least I have enough photo paper for the next few eons!

OK, so after watching Doctor Who, my mother and sister started asking questions about everything, and I was trying rather desperately to explain the whole regeneration thing, and Mother wondered who David Tennant was. So I wiki-ed him to show her a picture, and that got us started on all sorts of other Doctor-Who related stuff, until finally we pulled up the wiki page on the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith (now if ever there was a generic name…), and it’s IMPOSSIBLE to imagine him as the Doctor but I’m sure he’ll do fine but anyway he played Jim Taylor in the BBC production of the Sally Lockhart books, so I was like, oh, that must have been ages ago right? but it WASN’T, it was 2006, and Billie Piper (she’s Rose Tyler) was playing Sally and now I’m ever so weirded out because I mean I know Jim was fond of Sally but I never imagined as more than eleven or maybe thirteen at most, and here they are having him played by a grown man! And it’s horribly disturbing but anyway Christopher Eccleston, that’s the Ninth Doctor, he was in The Dark is Rising so I think maybe I should just stay away from the various doctors in other forms, or maybe just movie adaptions of books.

Speaking of camping, I was a unit aide there. Every UA there got a blue bandana. I picked up a stick and made myself a hobo sack. ‘Twas fun. I carried my water pistol, my water bottle, our shcuedle, our gold nuggets, and my Edgar Allen Poe book in there. My girls made me read the first story in it during our free time.

They made me stop after the second page.

    (bwaaahahahaaaaa)

RS: Well, I’m interviewing you for Alice’s amusement.
    Dalek: What-is-amusement?
RS: Never mind. Do you have a name?
    Dalek: I-am-a-Dalek.
RS: Yes, but do you have a name?
    Dalek: Only-the-highest-order-of-Daleks-have-names. One-day-I-will-have-one. For-now-I-am-a-Dalek.
RS: Okay, moving on. Um … why do you look so much like R2D2?
    Dalek: Identify-R2D2.
RS: A robot. From Star Wars. You’re both made of metal on the outside, you’re both shaped like salt shakers, you both roll to move, you both have a big eye-light-thing on your heads –
    Dalek: The-Dalek-is-far-superior-to-any-machine.
RS: Ah. Er … why are you so evil? Do you have any kindness at all?
    Dalek: EXTERMINATE! *chases*
    RS: *escapes down stairs*
Dalek: ELEVATE! *flies down after RS*
RS: *finds teleport machine* *teleports Dalek safely away*
Hundreds of other Daleks: *materialize* EXTERMINATE!
    RS: Cake.

I feel like being swashbuckling and having an adventure, but I haven’t anyone to be swashbuckling with, since neither Eva nor AB was home. It’s much harder to be swashbuckling and adventurous on one’s own, I feel, unless one is catapulted into the proper circumstances, and I never am. So now I’m discontented.

Thank goodness my dad’s a dentist and he’s going to take them out after a while, because the orthodontist wanted me to have them in for my life, or at least a very long time.

346- Happy Birthday, Luna! I wish you the best of years to come.

Softball’s starting on Monday, which is a bit weird, because the weather forecast is snowy for Tuesday and Wednesday, and softball is a sunny, warm-weather sport. Guess what I learned about my research paper today!

It has to be four pages.

Which wouldn’t be so bad if I’d known this in the first place, and I’m sure we were told that it had to four pages somewhere around the beginning of the unit, but I guess I wasn’t paying attention or something. Our teacher just repeats the same stuff over and over so I start to tune out and then when I’m not looking she slips in something vitally important and I miss it. Cake!
Even if I’d finished over spring break it wouldn’t matter because I’d have to go and stuff it full of filler anyway. And did I mention it’s due on Wednesday?
And I can’t find more than one site with information on Loglan or any other logical languages, if they even exist, so I’m sort of Eternally Doomed there.

I knew I should have picked something obvious and abundant. I thought I was so clever picking artificial languages. Agh. -is stupid-

375- I always do that! I pick something interesting, and then I find that absolutely no information exists for my subject. For example, I decided to research sonoluminescence for chemistry, which is really cool. A species of shrimp makes bubbles when is clicks its claws together, which creates tiny microscopic bubbles which create sound and light. And they don’t know why. Which is my problem.

As this is the random thread, I have a request. It is March, and there is no ScriptFrenzy thread. Is there a lack of interest? Or does one just not exist? Anyhoo, I request a SF thread.

Makes me quite impressed that Duane was able to pursue me as far as he did when he was completely smashed. Never mind that, I’d sooner forget it.

Tomorrow we do a group project on DUI and related subjects. I imagine that our group (and it’ll probably be the same one) will have some interesting times….of the five of us only two are crazy, two are sane and I can go both ways, thank you very much.

380- It’s in MLA format, so not only can it not be in any size BUT 12 pt and any font BUT Times New Roman, but the margins have to be 1 inch exactly (which is going to shrink my paper considerably) and the title ALSO has to be in 12 pt Times New Roman, no capitals.
    -dies-
Anyway, while I’m dying, I should go write that paper. I found a little bit more on Lojban, though I gather that it’s pretty much a spin-off of Loglan so there’s really not much to say, although I suppose I could talk about grammar. Hum.

So your paper is on Loglan? That’s cool! Is it Loglan specifically, or synthetic languages, or experimental languages? I’m not an expert on Loglan, but I do know tat there are a few other synthetic (and some crazy experimental) languages that you could do a compare/contrast with, if you’re trying to flesh out an essay.
I guess Esperanto is the basic. Muse did an article, no?

    384- Is APA scary then?
My paper’s on constructed languages in general. Sort of. I’ve got a paragraph for Esperanto, and a paragraph for logical languages (ex. Loglan and it’s spin-off, Lojban) and then fictional languages (ex. Klingon and one or another of Tolkein’s languages, or maybe I’ll just speak of them all in general). And then I’ve got a paragraph on Newspeak because it’s a fictional language but it’s different since it’s like English only condensed, plus I read 1984 and Newspeak is my link to my research topic.

Your research paper sounds very much more interesting than mine! Good luck with it, it’s an arduous process but v. rewarding in the end. If you’re like me all of the exactness will be very bothersome, but if you find the subject worth writing about it’s not so bad. My paper was on Heart of Darkness…Oh I liked the book but my paper was nothing special.
You should post excerpts when you’re done! Well, if you want. I love to hear anything about languages, and anything Tolkien just sweetens the deal.
