Has anyone seen Polly Shulman’s Jane-Austen-inspired book yet? Or read it?

did we ever discuss what we would have for breakfast if we lived on mars?
i don’t recall it. anyway, i would have mashed potatos. i was going to say i would have eggs, but the words ‘mashed potatos’ randomly popped nto my head, so i typed them instead.
Hmm…martian food? Or astronaut food maybe.
Or CHOKLIT!
Or cheeeeeeese from the mooooooooooon
No, I have not seen the book. At the moment I am trying to read all of P.G. Wodehouse, who wrote more than 90 novels and more short stories than you can count, so there you go. I will snap it up on sight as soon as I spot it, so smile sweetly, Shulman.
I haven’t read it. What does the cover look like?
I’ve read the book review and would love to read it but my parents aren’t going to take me to the bookstore until friday or saturday… at least, they’d better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i wrote this strange story yesterday. anyone want to hear it because if not too bad!!!

[Moved to the Writing v. 2006.1 thread. –Admin.
Neither the Barnes & Noble nor the Borders store in downtown Washington had copies of Enthusiasm tonight. I’ll keep checking.
Interesting! It’s in all the NYC bookstores I’ve checked so far. Either we’re nearer to the warehouse, or New York booksellers think their customers will like it more than DC ones. I wonder if you guys get novels about the President’s daughter and such subjects sooner than we do.
It’s here! The copy I ordered from Amazon just arrived at the office.
as usual i need to go to the bookstore on friday or saturday… if i can get that book then i can probably convince my friends to read it and buy it too!!!
Yay it’s on order at the library! I’ve got an automatic first hold, cuz i suggested it.
go me i feel special now. Of course, i’ll probably get it before they do. But still. The specialness remains. *bows* Your Specialness here!
yay…
still have to read the million other books i checked out. i actually turned down an offer to go to the library today.
I’ll try to get it…….but i haven’t been to the bookstore in ages. i’ll see if i can convince the parentals.
Congraulations, Polly! I’ll keep an eye out for it next time I’m in a bookstore with money to spend.
I like virtual choklit. CHOKLIT!! CHOKLIT CHOKLIT CHOKLIT!!!!!
Still reading P.G. Wodehouse-I just got through The World of Mr. Mulliner, and most of the Jeeves/Wooster things, and am now moving on to Psmith (the p is silent), Ukridge, Blandings Castle, and other things.
Oooh…I’m in need of some nice Austen-ish writing, actually. I will attempt to locate this.
i got it last night and finished reading it this morning. let me comment…
IT WAS FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you i know my comments are greatly appreciated here…
Thank you, kricket! I’m so glad you liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ll say it was AWESOME too, because I’m sure it is. I just don’t exactly know yet because i haven’t read it. But I will. I promise.
trust me if i didn’t like it, you would know.
I havent read it. I havnt heard of it. I havent remembered how to spell havent. [Grr…]
haven’t. Apostrophe.
Haven’t read it yet either. Spent all weekend on the comp. Nobody went to bookstore.
Oh the shame…i smack myself in the face. Repeatedly. *smack* *smack* *smack* Ok…that’s enough for now.
Doesnt have it at our library. I cheaked. :crying:
Whoops. Thats not evena smiley, is it? Oh well.
Well then you have to request it. Duh!
you mean
… and vf is right, you have to request it!! uh oh g2g2skool!!! c u l8ter!!!!!!!!!!
Ebeth, that’s slightly masochistic.
Masochism Tango! Yay!
Eh?
How is that masochistic?
Wait….. what’s masochistic? Oh hey, I’ll look it up on the handy dictionary on the computer! *looks up word* Oh, I see. It means……..hey, i’m not gonna tell you. Look it up yourself. Plus it’d take too long to type. Its a long entry. But Ebeth is right. I don’t get why that is masochistic. And what are you refering to anyway, when you say masochistic?
And why are you dancing about masochism? It’s not a happy princeple.
still have to get it. still have to finis dune. ( i know, thats kind of sad)
The library beat me to it. Oh vell. I shall get+read soon. Hopefully go to bookstore soon too…but yeah so anyway i give nice long rant when i read k?
So Kricket, did you notice the Secret Sonnet?
what Secret Sonnet? is that on your site or something? i think i shall go visit it now…
i am tired…
Kricket (39),
The Secret Sonnet is in the book.
Yes, I hid a sonnet in the book. Most people don’t notice–I’m curious whether Muse fans will.
oooooooohhhh!!! wait hang on let me scan the book and find it…
i think i got it… just a sec…
got it!!!!! is it when Julie and Parr are talking while they are dancing on… wait a sec… what page was it again… hold on…
got it!!! it is on page 46!!! right?
That’s it! You got it! You win the prize!
The prize is getting to write a sonnet.
I hope you think that’s a prize!
Sorry, don’t have the book yet. And how could a sonnet be hidden?
i’m gonna go get+read today. Couldn’t yestiddy-had to read shadow divers for the dear ol’ book club. which was incredible btw. Amazing book. U people should read it.
POLLYHYMNIA! Wow! That was good! I loved the whole sonnet stuff.
And i shall proudly say that i found the secret sonnet even before i looked at the page #.
*is proud* I blame lamuth. We spent ages on that rhythm/rhyme stuffins…but very clever there.
Anyway, thought the whole thing was quite good, LOVED ned the noodle
(i actually liked him better than bingley *gasp* blasphemy i know, but whatever) and much virtual spamabix to you. *claps*
Yay! I knew some Musebloggers would find the sonnet! And I’m glad Ned has an admirer of his own. He tends to get overshadowed by his roommate, but he’s very nice about it.
Polly, can you give me a description of the story, the kind you find on the inside jacket or the back of the book? Thanks.
Sure, Violetfire.
Here’s what it says on the jacket:
Julie’s best friend, Ashleigh, is an enthusiast. Julie never knows what new obsession will catch Ashleigh’s fancy, but she does know she’s likely to be drawn into the madness.
Ashleigh’s latest craze is Julie’s own passion, Pride and Prejudice. But Ashleigh can’t just appreciate it as a great read; she insists on emulating the novel’s heroines, in speech, dress, and the most important element of all—finding True Love. And so Julie finds herself with Ashleigh, dressed in vintage frocks, sneaking into a dance at the local all-boys prep school, where they discover some likely candidates.
The problem with Ashleigh’s craze this time, however, is that there is only one Mr. Darcy. So when the girls get a part in the boys’ school musical, what follows is naturally equal parts comedy and romance, as a series of misinterpreted—and missed—signals, dating mishaps, and awkward incidents make Julie wonder if she has the heart for True Love.
Thanks. Dangle it in front of my nose. I can’t read it until Spring Break! Waah! Going to cry! *sobs into keyboard*
Robert-
My mother brought Enthusiasm home without me asking for it. She saw a review in the New York Times book review. I started it and am enjoying it. Did you say you and your cousins are mentioned on Page 8? or am I imagining things?
Secret Sonnet? I found it! when I was reading it I noticed an oddly large amount of rhythm and rhyme, decided it sounded like a musical song, realized it was a sonnet and got all excited. I am on page 64
oh and one more thing- I like the MB name Pollyhymnia! Do I get the prize for finding the Secret Sonnet? I found it before I even read this thread.
E~A (55),
Glad you’re enjoying it!
It’s just one cousin, and we’re not actually mentioned, just alluded to. Well, my first name and four-fifths of her last name. No time to explain more just now.
Oh the sorrow! Oh the shame! I misspelled Robert’s cousin’s name!
(That may not be a real sonnet, but there’s rhyme and meter on it.)
(I meant to say, there’s meter IN it. I’ll correct it in a minute.)
Yes, elassë~adael, you win the Sonnet-Finding Prize, which is this:
If YOU write a sonnet, I’ll post it on my website. (Assuming it’s appropriate for readers of tender years and elegant sensibility, of course.)
Yay, elassë~adael!!!!!!
The same prize goes for anybody else who finds the sonnet.
I found it, but i can’t write sonnets. The shakespeare’s b-day thread has a lot though…u should check it out.
Finished it just now. I’ll attempt to write a sonnet… eventually. Who knows how long it shall take me… Hmm… I have a creative writing class this summer… maybe I’ll write it then.
Pollyhymnia- I too like Diana Wynne Jones!
Thanks for the alert, Unlurker. That Shakespeare thread was fun!
I look forward to your sonnet any time you write it, e-a. Glad to meet a fellow DWJ fan.
