Well, the swine flu (flew)! Hahahahaha! *laughes a little bit too much for such a lame joke* HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

in May 5th, 2009 @ 12:15The only trouble is, there’s no evidence at all that swine flu is any more deadly than regular flu. It’s like bird flu. When bird flu was first a problem, 100 people died from it annually worldwide. Guess how many people died from other types of flu? 1.5 million.

Dino flu wiped out the dinos(what about the ateroid? im getting to that!!!) dino flu got to earth via asteroid, making it asteroid flu. Asteroids come from space so there you have it! Bird flu is Space flu! this is all a hypothosis, so don’t go whinning to your teacher yes im insane genius

in May 5th, 2009 @ 12:45I would assume the “trouble” he might mean would be if it is no more deadly than regular flu, they are freaking people out and panicking them over a pandemic that might never happen. Don’t know if that’s what en means or not, but that was sort of my impression.

in May 5th, 2009 @ 17:12No, nobody is actually panicking here that I know of. It’s just, I know with avian influenza, media/etc hyped it all up and freaked a lot of people out. Not me personally, but I know that scare had a lot of people freaked, what with NBC doing its stupid and ridiculous disaster movie on it, where everyone contracted it and killed of millions (never actually saw the movie, that was just my impression of it based on previews and the like)….

The funny thing is, the Fact Sheet said “There are no confirmed cases in Oregon” and the next day there was.

in May 5th, 2009 @ 17:37My teacher actually said that it’s weaker than the normal flu. The problem is that we have no immunity. So basically, if you’re exposed, you get the flu for a week or so. In my opinion, ’tis no big deal.

in May 5th, 2009 @ 17:58The two know-it-alls in my class say that the case was the same with the Spanish Flu epidemic of the 1800s: There was a very mild outbreak in the spring, then it came back with a vengence in the fall. We’ll just have to wait and see.

in May 5th, 2009 @ 21:11Hm, yes, for a day or two it was a really big deal, and everyone was like “Swine flu haha,” or “it’s not funny we’re all going to DIE!” and now no one really talks about it much. I’m not terribly worried. If it does come back in the fall, now that’ll suck, but hey, death is death. It happens to everyone sooner or later.
I’d rather die myself than watch my parents die.

in May 6th, 2009 @ 06:24Yes- we’re having to take our temperatures twice daily at school and if you go to the library there’s a thermal scanner even though no one has gotten H1N1 here yet (Singapore). They’ve also issued home quarantine orders to 8 people who recently got back from Mexico. And because we’re visiting the US this summer we have to stay in home quarantine for 7 days once we get back. I wonder what happens when you get hungry, because we usually clear out our fridge before leaving to prevent having to deal with rotting vegetables when we get home. So we’ll have to survive on canned onion soup and rice.

in May 6th, 2009 @ 06:296- Yes, the pharmacies are out of masks and Tamiflu and hand sanitizer so people are turning to the N-95 masks they have from when SARS hit here. But those, apparently, don’t work too well, especially after sitting in a box for a few years. Yesterday I actually saw an elderly woman walking around with a gas mask. When asked why, she said (in poor English), “No want get flu lah.”

in May 6th, 2009 @ 13:09Swine flu stats here: Nobody cares. Flus are part of life here. At least 1x every winter, you get the flu. C’est la vie, ici.
At the moment, people are more worried about the economic crisis (Austria is in big do-do, since it has dets and banks & buisnesses are folding almost every other day).
Besides, the deaths were in Mexico, where the heathcare is… less that wonderful. I don’t think countries with a better healthcare system will have any trouble preventing the flu.

If someone coughs somewhere, a teacher will be there a with a hankie and a suspension notice ‘for the good of others’. I’ll tell you one thing: i’d rather be sick and out of school than well and in with all these crazy supervision tactics.

Our college has sent out several emails telling us that if we do happen to get the flu (although there are no local cases, yet), we are supposed to stay home. But next week is finals. Who is seriously going to do that? To be quite honest, I don’t know if I could bring myself to skip finals even if I had the swine flu, because my finals are so crucial to preserving my grade.

I’m not that worried about swine flu, at least not about dying from it, but it would still suck for me to get it now, since there’s a bunch of really important stuff coming up in a couple weeks… (Finals? Who cares about finals? I’ve got a batizado to worry about!) I’m more worried about my friends getting it, really. And I’m going to something in Boston tomorrow, so I’m kind of freaked about that, since there’re going to be a ton of people there. But hopefully I’ll be okay…

Of course, Suffern County has had a case, so that’s pretty nearby, but not really. ((Hope that’s not giving too much away!!!))
Some kid recently brought a a face mask to school, and I was like,”Dude, are you serious?” I mean come on, we’re not in Mexico people!
So yeah. I don’t think that there is anything to worry about!

He then proceeded to rant about doctors were if they could confuse strep throat and the flu. I just think it’s paranoia. Thankfully, it’s dying down here.

I don’t know why everyone is freaked out about H1N1 becoming a pandemic… IT ALREADY IS!
what makes H1N1 potentially more deadly than the flu is that it completely regenerates itself every 8 hours, meaning it mutates and adapts faster, causeing to potentially become deadly fast.
we don’t need to worry about this spring all that much… if history* has any stock in it, we really need to worry about the fall when the H1N1 combines forces with the regular flu season
*the flu of 1912 or something had a small bout in the spring and then REALLY hit hard in the fall.

And now I hear researchers have identified a new Patient Zero, who came down with the flu six days earlier than the other person and hadn’t been near a pig farm. All told, I’d say “swine flu” is misleading.
Besides, most new strains of flu develop in animals before they spread to human beings. The difference this time is that it usually happens in Asia, not in North America.

in May 7th, 2009 @ 11:20Right. What should we call it? It came to us from pigs. I got H1N1 flu a few years ago. I did not get this virus.
Now this is how it has human parts, pig parts, and bird parts. When two influenza viruses invade a cell, the resulting viruses are a combination of those viruses. Thus, influenza changes very quickly.
This flu is called swine flu for two reasons. First, it is mostly from a flu virus from pigs. Second it came from pigs. If anyone has a good substitute for the name ‘swine flu’ that only refers to this virus, I’d like to hear it.

I think that saying H1N1 or A(H1N1) is inexact and misleading not just because it refers to multiple viruses, but also because everyone already knows this disease as swine flu.
Prudence, indeed, will dictate that flu names long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that pigs are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the names to which we are accustomed.

in May 7th, 2009 @ 11:34I’m really freaking out about H1N1, swine flu, or whatever you want to call it. I have bad OCD and this doesn’t really help. (as you can imagine.) Oh, well. I’ll just have to wait and hope it passes. Actually my sister’s just recovering from a COLD – not the swine flu, but I got scared when she got it in the first place.

in May 7th, 2009 @ 17:00More about the swine-flu factoid in my last comment: Until this week, one place nobody had found this particular influenza virus was in pigs. People were infected and were passing the virus on to other people, but scientists couldn’t find any pigs that had swine flu.
Then on May 3 (Sunday), researchers finally found some infected pigs — but they weren’t in Mexico, where everybody expected them to be. They were in Alberta, Canada. Science is full of surprises.

Nobody’s gotten it yet, but I wish someone would call in and make some sort of case about the swine flu (not nescecarrily real, I mean, faking is just as good) so that the school could be closed. I know there’s only a few weeks left, but I’m restless!Anyway, the swine flu hasn’t hit here that we know of, but if it comes it isn’t too big a deal. Nothing to worry about, anyway. It’s just a temporary flu.

Swine flu sounds less stiff than H1N1, it’s easier to say, and truly, at this point, probably nobody will know what you’re talking about when you refer to H1N1, unless they are a scientist.
Ehh, let’s just drop it. This is turning into a debate. You call it H1N1, and I’ll call it swine flu. People are allowed personal preference. This is fun on some level, but I don’t really want to have an argument with a GAPA.

in May 8th, 2009 @ 20:31Okay, so I don’t know if anybody has ever played the Pandemic Virus game, but it has me ever-so-slightly paranoid about the swine flu/H1N1.
Basically, the point of the game is that you’re a virus and you need to mutate in order to kill the entire world. Unfortunately for you, the virus, countries will close their borders and keep everybody home if they think that you are getting too dangerous. So, basically, the best way to win is to get rid of all of your lethality and symptoms (the default is coughing+sneezing) so that nobody knows they have it, and then once everybody is infected you can totally up the lethality and kill hundreds of thousands of people at one time.
Google the game if you want it to make more sense. It’s kind of interesting/creepy when put in this real-world perspective.

Which given that lots of people have colds right now, I think, is nice….Although, there is a notice on the door to the stairwell about because of the swine flu, we are all supposed to make sure we cover our mouth with a sleeve when we sneeze, don’t touch our mouth, nose or eyes, cough into a sleeve/arm, throw tissues directly into the trash, wash hands incessantly, etc, etc, etc.
All the same things that I thought were more or less common courtesy when you were sick, regardless of what you’re sick with. I mean, it’s only polite to avoid coughing and sneezing and snotting on people, y’know?
Although the no touching eyes/nose/mouth thing is obviously not happening…..
Yeah, my cold is morphing from almost sore throat into nasal congestion. Which is really going to suck big time come Friday when I’m on a plane and my eustachian tubes are blocked, and my head explodes from the inside out rupturing my eardrums. i swear I’ve come close before, when I’ve flown with a cold. The pain is almost unbearable. *shudder* Not looking forward to this, at all. I’ll probably end up getting high on nyquill so that I can attempt to be asleep most of the flight. ok, so not actually high, just taking two gel caps every 6 hours, like the instructions tell you…..Taking more than the recommend dose of drugs is one thing I do not do. One of many, actually……..

Now I’m a bit more frightened- Malaysia and Indonesia both have cases and I feel like we’re turkey sandwiched between two pieces of moldy bread that keep pressing on us tighter. It’s only a matter of time until the mold spreads to us. As Health Minister Boon Khaw keep saying, the public should not panic because it’s inevitable that the swine flu will hit here sometime and we should just prepare for it because it’s not dangerous unless you’re old, extremely young, or already ill. Unfortunately Singapore has something of an aging population so it could be pretty bad. All the shops and things have posters up on how to prevent a pandemic and so on. So far, 22 home quarantine orders have been issued but none of the people have been ill in the slightest.

You mention swine flu around here, and people are like “Swine flu? Oh yeah, swine flu. C’mon, Armada, that’s so two weeks ago. Nobody’s worried about it anymore.” Whether or not this is a realistic attitude remains to be seen, though.

I had kindegarden duty, that day, and day, and I didn’t feel well. So I asked some other kids too take the job. Nobody would. So, I had my two kindegardeners to take care of on the bus. The next few days, I was out sick. And when I came back, I found out the kindegardeners had gotten sick the day after I did, and they didn’t end up coming back to school for a week and a half.
