Looks fun. As soon as I figure out the problem with my password, I’ll make a move.

  2. Try it again. It worked for me. I sent you an email about it.

Of course, when we finish, somebody’s going to have to say “Play it again, Sam.”

I’m logged in and on this thread… just considering my move.

  6. By the way, to castle, you start by clicking on the King. The program will show you where the possible moves are. Castling will be a move to a non-adjacent square, but I’m not sure which one. It will be interesting to see how it works on a wider board.

  7. Looks as if you’ll have to wait, after White’s 8th move.

  8. POSOC says:

Actually, I just found out that castling is done by clicking one of the first two buttons: 0.0 for H-side, and 0.0.0 for A-side.

Ouch. Nice move, Bookgirl. Let me see if I can wriggle out of this…

I adore the Chancellor! It’s so useful!

  11. Isn’t it? You can swing it into position like a knight, then hammer away with it like a rook.

As far as I can tell, the main weakness of chancellors and archbishops is that you can chase them away with a protected knight. Trading one for a knight would be a very disadvantageous exchange.

Combined with a Queen this will be very interesting.

  13. Black’s 14th move loosens the vise a little, methinks.

OK, sorry I was gone so long, I was in LA without computer. Will move now.

  18. (17) Pan, I could set you up with a chess account if you’d like to play a game. We have regular chess, Capablanca chess, and several other possible variants.

  19. Ahoy, bookgirl_me! Are you around? It’s been four days since White’s move.

  20. It’s been a week now. If this goes on much longer, I’ll be tempted to declare a forfeit. POSOC, how much longer are you willing to wait for bookgirl_me to move?

    • POSOC says:

Meh, if nothing’s happened by Wednesday, I think I’ll be prepared to call it a forfeit. Pity, since it was shaping up to be an interesting game.
I’ll go try to get her attention, though.

  21. It’s a pity, because Black’s next move is fairly obvious. Well, good luck.

And now I’m wishing I didn’t wait. I can see pretty clearly what you’re about to do… STOPPING it is going to be another matter.

Very clever. I’m not going to say any more in case you make a stupid mistake (one can hope), but I’ve already lost.

A good game. The new pieces make it go quicker… Thanks.

  26. POSOC: You missed your last chance when you took the archbishop with the j pawn on move 15. If you had taken with the h pawn, you could have brought in reinforcements and could have traded your rook for the knight on h6. It still would have been an uphill struggle, but you might have survived.

bookgirl_me: Did you have a better move for move 14?

    • POSOC says:

      Good to know.
I think my major mistake, actually, was castling. That made it easier for Bookgirl to trap me, and I couldn’t bring any of my more powerful chessmen into play on that side of the board.

Good game, by the way. A very enjoyable intellectual exercise.

  28. bookgirl_me says:

26-No. I was taking a quick look at the board and thought that g2 would work, then looked it over again and realized it wouldn’t. The chancellor was too powerful- I needed to get rid of it somehow…

    27-I agree.

  29. (29) bookgirl: If White had traded chancellors with you earlier, I think he would have saved himself some grief. Even as late as move 11, Cxg4 would have helped defuse the attack.

For Black, I think 14. … Cxi3+ (instead of Axi3) might have been stronger, though. After White captured the chancellor (forced), you could have played the archbishop to either g2 or j3.

As it was, after 14. …Axi3, 15. hxi3, I think White could have brought in enough reinforcements to survive the attack, though possibly at some cost in material.
