    hmm…..i choose mine!
    first post??
    whatever. ME START!!

Nora’s auburn hair whipped at her face as she sailed through the air in the dark of night. Her feet ached and her stomach felt hollow, but she followed the moonlight and attempted to stay on the path. Iridescent insects littered the tree bark as she flew by the woody thicket surrounding her. The narrow path of dirt lighter than that around her seemed to be made only for her at the perfect width. It diverged into perfect resting spots nestled in the center of various scattered enclosures of brush that blocked out the sun when it rose but let in the moon in the dark of night. One was coming up now, and she slowed down, her feet feeling gritty and tender. When Nora sat down on a large rock at the entrance of the alcove, she saw that all of her constant running had worn a hole through the soles of her light sandals. The leather was faded and ripped, while the ropes on the top of the shoe had long since broken. Long blades of grass were wrapped around her foot. Those, too, had worn down and it was time to make new shoes. Nora hung her head down and noticed the tatters that her clothing had become. Her jeans were brittle from becoming drenched with sweat in the day and then drying at night repeatedly for the last ten days. Her skin was tanned and her eyelids were tired. She realized that she had been running for almost half an hour and collapsed onto the ground. If she died, nobody would find her—that is, not until the Patrol found her. But, Nora realized, the Patrol never had been very fast. As Nora traveled on foot, the Patrol traveled by Undermol to better fly under the radar of other detection agencies. The Policing in Amarya was never coordinated, and one Patrol party always clashed into another. So all of them developed different tactics to better be hidden and undistinguished in attempt to capture lawbreakers. Therefore, what had been meant to make them blend into the environment only singled them out more; each division developed a different nickname amongst the Escapees. Those who fled; those who refused to conform. They all didn’t pay any attention to the tracker rings or the protection gel that “everyone” wore. It was too cumbersome; Nora would rather ask for a pass in school, and walk right out the back door as a gym class did. She then hung around the brick side of the building as everyone ran out to the track or the field. She snuck behind cars and then strolled to the high school, to appear as if she had business to attend to. Once at the entrance, she would reel around to appear insane, and dash off into the wood. By the time she had gone one mile into the Never-ending Wood, the people of the school actually realized that she had disappeared. Then it took even longer for the notification to reach the entire District 3, City N, and Area NoZ. Search parties were sent out, but they never caused Nora any trouble. Usually three or four Patrol groups took on the job, hoping they would outdo their fellow workers. Everything would be so much better if people coordinated eachother, but someone had spawned an equal hatred amongst the cities in her area and so nothing was as interconnected as it could have been. The Diggers on their Undermols always took too long because they carved different underground paths every time, filling up behind them as they went so as not the weaken the foundation of the city. The Fliers took Jets to cut through the air and attempt speeding to get to criminals fastest, but they often missed. The treetops in the Never-ending Wood were too dense for anyone to detect a small girl of thirteen without any provisions at all. It was different this time, though. She wasn’t going back home in a day to Nessa, Nick, and Nandi. Or to her parents, Naddy and Nina, who scolded her every single time she ran away and wondered what they had done wrong that she fit best with the Escapees. In Elementary School, it had seemed harmless, but by 5th and 6th grade, her parents began to worry about the negative effect on Nora. By age 12 and grade 7, Nora fit perfectly with her best friends and had escaped many times. It was never nearly this far, though, this was definitely the farthest anyone she knew had ever gone. At least, at her age, and having returned.
Nora could barely tell anymore why she wanted to escape permanently in the first place. She loved her family and adored her friends, but it always felt like something was missing. She was the biggest rebel in her grade, popular with most everyone, and had the highest marks in City N. Impressive, especially for an Escapee. But all of her accomplishments had seemed for naught. She felt hollow inside, an empty programmed shell. Nora didn’t want to conform in any way. The murmur of the crickets lulled her to sleep and she wrapped herself in her blanket on the rock and drifted off. Her thoughts wandered, remembering snippets of her old life, and Nora could tell that this would change the course of her life forever. Already, she saw herself getting thinner. Mostly because although she had brought bags full of food, she kept saving most of it, for fear of starving like in the numerous adventure novels she had been sneaking from Storage since she was 7. Nora could remember vividly; Nandi told her about palaces and goblins and Nora stared in awe. Late at night, Nandi tapped on Nora’s bed cabinet and shined a flashlight onto her face. Nora clambered down and noticed Nelly, Nick, and Nessa standing with Nandi. The five of them pushed a serving table out of the way and loosened some wood floorboards. Nick pulled a nail out and Nessa pulled another one at the same time, and suddenly a perfect circle opened up directly under Nelly. He dropped in first, and then Nandi, Nick, and Nessa followed. Nora stood up, backed away, and cannonballed in, hoping to land in something soft. She looked up and saw a dim light flicker off above her. The hole had closed.

In continuation of Shriya Siolashrwa Jeffica’s post:

“Yeah, well?” The voice came from above. “I told you to link the suspension cable with the unilateral B-line, Arkim!” Nora levitated a few feet in surprise. Who could be out so deep into the Forest? The voice was annoyed, female, and cutting. Its accent was familiar, but odd.
“Arkim?” it called again. “Ahh, beetles.” Nora’s curiosity was piqued.
    “Hello?” she called back.
“Who are you?” the mysterious voice responded sharply.
    “Um.”
“What an odd name. I’m Beita. Have you seen Arkim around here?”
    “Arkim?”
“A friend.” A woman about five years older than Nora came out of the bushes. She was tall, bony, androgynous, confident, and her hair and clothing were distinctly ratty in the same way that Marilyn Monroe was distinctly blonde. Her eyes looked somewhat wild, and her hair took the level to the jungle. Nora decided she was plain-certainly she was far too thin and pale-skinned for Nora herself.
“You must be new here,” Beita said, extending a hand so skinny and pale Nora could see each vein. The girl had an instant flash of how she would become as an Escapee. She took the hand anyway, suddenly afraid.
“Do you mind if we go further in? I’m terribly sorry, but everyone out here is rather vulnerable. So, Um, my friend, where are you from?”

She was trapped! she felt around the smooth walls filled with terror. then her fingers felt a gap. She squeezed through and blinked at the pale light that filled the room. “What are you doing here”, someone called. Wisely Nora kept silent. She looked around, peering at the crates that filled the room. She shifted, and somehing fell. All of a sudden she woke up. Hello, she heard someone call. she looked up. it was another Escapee. at least, that who Nora assumed she was. the girl was wearing clothes that seemed nearly as worn-out as her own, and she seemed somewhat wary. “Uh, hi,” Nora replied. “you ran away?” asked the girl. Nora nodded. “I’m Lorine.” the stranger said. “You look like you need help. How long have you been in the Forest?” “Ten days,” grumbled Nora. She didnt know who this girl was, and even though she knew many of the Escapees she didnt know all of them.

Nora looked at Beita, whose shockingly huge and brown eyes stared innocently, wild as they looked. She sighed.
“I don’t want to talk about that. It’s a place you wouldn’t want to think about, much less be in,” said Nora.
“And my name is Nora. Not Um.”
“Okay, Nora. Listen, we need to get to the hideaway. Like I said, everyone is rather vulnerable out here.” Beita smiled a smile with her dry, pale pink lips. She gripped Nora’s hand more tightly.
“Where we’re going may be a little frightening at first, but it’s much safer than being out here in the open. Oh, wonderful! You have food! Please do bring it,”said Beita. They walked a bit deeper into the woods. Suddenly, a shadowy figure appeared at Beita’s side. It spoke with a soft, husky voice that was somehow entrancing and terrifying at the same time.
“I’m sorry, Beita. I thought I heard one of the Patrol in the distance. It was just a hawk,” came the mesmerizingly horrifying voice. They passed through a clearing, and the star and moonlight brought the features of the figure into high relief for Nora to see. She had a serene face with a dark tan complexion, controlled narrow blue eyes, a classical nose, and mocha-colored lips. She was as skinny as Beita was, but pulled it off with becoming grace. And her hair was a long, thin, shiny mane the color of ink. Beita gasped a little.
“I’m so sorry, Nora. This is Arkim. Arkim, this is Nora,” said the kindly personage, keeping her voice low.

“Avast!” cried a voice from the darkness.
“What was that?” Nora wailed, frightened. She felt like someone had taken the springs out of her circadian clock. Exhaustion swept over her like fumes from Victoria’s Secret.
“No need to worry,” Arkim reassured, suspicion still creeping in her voice. “I left on the alarm. It’s supposed to sound like this is a Patrol hideout and not an Escapee den. In case the Patrol does come in here.
“It’s not very realistic,” Beita grumbled.
    “Oh, can you do better?”
    “Of course.”
    “Not very likely!”
    “Wanna bet?”
“You’ve never even been inside a Patrol den.”
    “And you have?”
    “How should you know?”
Nora had never even seen a Patrol den, or heard of such a thing. She said so.
“It’s very simple, dear,” Arkim said condescendingly. “It’s a place where the Patrol keeps extra ammunition and supplies, and where you can usually find a few of their more nefarious officers. Oh, hullo.” They had come to the end of the tunnel. Nora viewed it in shock.

You are the 700th person to walk into this cave since I came across it. The Patrol has never found it…and they never will. I keep it very well hidden. Good gracious, you are a wreck. Come with me and I’ll get you some new clothes. ”
Nora followed Beita into an alcove on the east wall of the cave. There was a mattress there, and a small chest of clothes beside it. Beita rummaged through it for a few moments, then held up a blouse and a pair of jeans. Even better was the pair of shoes that she gave Nora a moment later. When Nora was clothed, fed, and introduced to a few dozen people, Nora asked Beita what happened to all these people.
“Well, some of them I can smuggle away. Some stay here their whole lives. They stay as long as they want to, and they can leave at any time. Our country is in sad shape if it has come to this.”

“But they don’t say anything about it in the news.”
“They don’t tell you quite alot of things, i expect. I see it in the faces of those who come here.”

Beita studied Nora, waiting to see if she would say more. When she remained silent, a faint smile flickered across Beita’s lips, but her eyes reflected sadness.
“They haven’t told you, have they? But I wouldn’t expect Them to. No, They wouldn’t tell you anything.”
Nora was only half-listening as she glanced around her, wondering that Beita could survive out here for so long. She’d only been out here a few days and she was already weak. The way Beita said ‘they’ brought her attention back to the conversation. She emphasized it, saying it in a way that made the word sound like a name. Nora frowned.
    “They. Who are They?”
Beita flinched, the faint smile fading instantly from her lips.
    “Oh, that? They’re nothing. Nevermind.”
But she knew just as well as Nora that her tone was too suddenly cheerful and casual to fool either of them. They exchanged a long look. The silence made Nora uncomfortable, but she refused to back down. She wanted to know what was going on, and she was going to find out!
    “Tell me. Who are They?”
Suddenly she could feel the force of Beita’s full attention focused on her as Beita stared at her. Beita could see in Nora’s expression that she wanted answers. Could she trust her? Time to find out. All humor left her as she spoke.
“I can tell you that, Nora, but you must tell me something first. Why did you come here? I know what you thought when you left your city. You think even now that Escaping is a game.”
Nora started to protest, but Beita held up a hand for silence and continued.
“I can tell you everything you’ve ever wanted to know, but once you know this, once you know who They are, you can never go back to the city. Do you know what Escaping means? To Escape, truly Escape, is to be free from all of Their lies. But once you know the truth you might find out you would have rather stayed ignorant.”
A flick of emotion flashed across Beita’s face again, Nora noticed. What was Beita thinking? What did she know that could be so important?
    “I still want to know.”
Beita shook her head and focused on Nora again.
“If this life is a game, it is a dangerous one. Once you’ve started playing, you devote your life to survival, and that is all there is. You see these people? All of the people I smuggle, and all of those who stay with me, all of them wanted to know about Them. Now they know. That’s what happened to them, that’s why they’re out here trying to survive, it’s all they can do. Is that what you want? If I tell you the truth, you’ll know all of the rules of the world that makes up this game. If you choose to play now you can never stop playing, not until you die. So tell me, Nora. Is this what you really want?”

“I was out with a few others getting some leaves to stuff old Dains mattress with. He complains that it’s too thin. Anyhow, while we were walking back, a patrolman appeared. I told everyone to scatter, but most of them went straight towards the hideout, than as an afterthought, veered off. I bet they’ll have patrolmen here in an hour.”
Beita chewed her lip as she digested the information.
“In my mind,” she began”there is only one thing to do. I had hoped never to do this, but it seems we must. We will have to evacuate the cave.”

Beita’s voice rose above them all, commanding. “Everyone stay calm. be quiet, don’t shove to get out of the entrance. Make for the southern border. Good luck.” A que instantly formed at the cave mouth, but following Beita’s instructions, everyone was silent and no one shoved or jostled each other. Nora was on her way out when she saw a child, her eyes wide with fear, turning helplessly on the spot. There was no alternative. Grabbing the girl’s hand Nora left the cave and they ran in a zig-zag course, until Nora felt the weight in her hand increase. She turned to see that the girl had collapsed. They couln’t stop! Nora cast frantically around for anything that might help her. The only thing that came to mind seemed horridly risky. On the other hand, they couldn’t just sit here. She studied the trees nearest to her. Selecting one with low, sturdy branches she began to climb, turning back to the girl.

In continuation of 33, 100% cotton’s latest installment:

Nora gathered the child in her arms, and with a tremendous amount of adrenaline-fueled effort, hoisted the girl into a handy section of the tree. Nora spent her time covering herself and her friend with boughs, making sure they were completely invisible. She was half afraid the child would cry out, and was trying to soothe the girl when she heard voices.
    ‘Parker! Find anything?’
‘Nossir. I think the hideout may be that way, sir. West.’ Nora did a quick calculation. If Soon was in the sky to the left, than the hideout was east of where whe was. She breathed a quick sigh of relief.
‘How many pockets do you suspect were there?’
‘Sir, Lieutenant Fracker suspects at least thirty in this sector.’
‘Just like him to say such a thing. I think you’re under the curiously eccentric impression I actually give heddite shaving about what Fracker says. Pity. You seemed like a good guy for a nanosecond there. Let’s see where the others are, shall we? West, please.’
    ‘But, sir-‘
‘Parker, I’m your corporal. No dithering.’
There was the sound of an engine going, then dying off. Nora was glad as she let out a breath that would have dwarfed an F5 storm. She knew she was now an Escapee for life, but she doubted the length would be long or tortuous. A quick look through the branches revealed that the forest floor was empty. She turned to the child, who held out her arms expectantly. The girl was small, pudgy, blue-eyed and blonde, vaguely Nordic and wearing an impractical ruffled thing that was reminiscent of the late Eva Peron.

Nora dropped to the ground, then with, much effort, brought the girl down too. Setting her on the ground, she croutched and looked into the wide blue eyes, which, curiously enough, showed no sign of fear, just a sort of detatched curiosity.
“I’m Nora. I’m going to take care of you until we catch up with the rest of the Escapees. What’s you name?”
The girl shifted her head away, but still kept her saucer-like eyes on Nora.
The cry of a bird reminded Nora that time had not stopped, and that more Patrol could come along at any moment. Not waiting to ask the girl any more questions, she picked up the girl and headed back toward where the other Escapees had been headed.

He Put one drop on Beita’s wound and as it dissapeared, he watched her start breathing again. She was still unconscious but he had done it. He had saved a fellow Escapee’s life. He figured she would wake up soon but he couldnlt risk loosing the other Escapees.
The boy had dark hair and electric blue eyes. He wore a brown T-shirt with torn up blue jeans. He studied them, noticing a rip in his pocket. He put away the jar and started running. Eventually he caught up to Nora.
She stood in shock as the boy put his hands on his knees and breathed heavily. He stood up and introduced himself. “Hello.” He shook her hand. “My name is Randi.” “Randi what?” Nora asked. “Randi. Just Randi. And who might you be.” “I’m Nora” She stammered.” He looked at the girl in her arms. “And who might this be?” He asked “Oh!” Nora exclaimed. “I don’t know her name.” “You kook like you’ve been carrieing her for a while. Mind if I take her?” “Thank you.” She said realived. All of a sudden, Nora notice what surprisingly shocking blue eyes he had.

I think it would be cool if Nora finds out she has some relation with the little girl. Cousins? Long lost sisters? Sorry for the romantic gump. I couldn’t help myself. I just decided to be wierd today

“Why are you here?” He asked her. Nora jolted out of her trance. “Oh uh…” She hadn’t really thought about it, so she said the first thing that came to mind “My parents dont understand me.”Okay…” He said. Randi didn’t quite believe her.
They walked on. Suddenly out of the dark bushes jumped a…

It snarled at them menacingly. nora had never seen anything like it before but she remembered that you weren’t supposed to look dogs in the eye because it seemed agressive. averting her glance tried to shoo the creature off the path. It leapt away from her hands and she proceeded. however, it kept pace with her, growling occasionallybut drawing closer than a few feet.

i agree that it would be cool if Nora and the girl were in someway related

She was growing worried that she would have a longer didtance to travel before she reached the Escapees when the little girl jumped out of Nora’s arms and walked towards the creature “No!” Nora cried but the girl acted like she hadn’t heard her. She plopped down next to it and reached for it, wanting to play. The fox snarled and ran into the bushes. Could she hear me? Nora wondered she picked up the girl and talked in her ear “Hello?” She said. The girl didn’t move. “Hello?!” She said a little louder. Randi tapped her on the shoulder. “Um, Nora?” He asked timidly “I don’t think she can hear you.” “Oh.” Nora realized sadly. “I think she’s deaf.”

Okay, someone else go now! No-one is ever here any more!

Beita opened her eyes. Opened her eyes? That wasn’t right. She was supposed to be dead, and Beita had never been one to believe in the afterlife. She sat up, and blinked until her vision was clearer. No mistake: this was where she’d died.

Suddenly, she gasped with realisation. Someone had Elixir. Someone wanted her to live and was willing to risk their soul for it. Either that, or they were just stupid. Could she stand? Beita pushed against the ground until she was leaning against a tree in a somewhat vertical position. She could, then. Gripping the rough bark of trees for support, Beita took off in the direction of her fellow Escapees. She could at lease make some good of her second chance.

She took a step and felt a jolt of pain shoot through her leg. Things weren’t going to be so easy. She might not be dead, but she was very weak and her ankle felt like it was broken. Then she spied just the thing she needed. A walking stick. Hobbling painfully over she bent down and grabbed it. If she wanted to live she’d better move fast.

Meanwhile, Nora walked on until she saw three huts. All had lights flaring inside and voices talking grimly inside them. Nora gasped and ducked. “What is it?” Randi asked “It looks like the patrol are camping here!” she replied “Its not the patrol…” Randi said softly. He pulled nora out of the bushes and walked to one of the huts. “Its a hideout for the Escapees!” They walked inside. Nora noticed that it was alot bigger on the inside then it was on the outside.
The little girl hobbled over to the table where many men and women where gathered. “No, come back!” Nora whispered to her. The girl walked oner to one of the men and pulled on the bottom of his pants.”Well what have we here?” He asked as he bent to pick her up.

As he did he turned to look at the Nora. “This is Hanna.” he told her. “One day she showed up an started following me around- i guess you could say she adopted me.”
“How do you know her name since she can’t talk?” Nora demanded.
“Hanna is just what i call her, actually. Oh, and I’m Nic.”
“Nice to meet you.” Randi said. “I’m Randi and this is Nora.”
At that moment they were interupted by a joyous shout from across the room. “Randi!”
Nora turned to see a little boy who was surley Randi’s brother running towards them. “Paulo! I thought i’d never see you again! I thought- I’m so glad you’re safe.” Randi cried.
