It looks AWESOME! But I’m probably not going to see it on opening night since I’m going to be at camp :( . I probably will get to see it, but since this is my favorite, I really wanna see it on opening night.

Most of the pre-screening reviews are positive, however.

Thank you GAPAs!!! I didn’t think you’d make a thread devoted to the movie! *surprise*

4-In England? That’s so cool! Do you live there?

6-It opens on the 15th here, too. Stupid WB……we could have seen it in November, for crying out loud!

I might go see it at midnight, but I don’t think my parents would be to enthused with the idea. But who knows, they surprise me a lot. The preview for the movie makes me SO EXCITED!!! If my parents and I are watching a recorded show and there’s a preview, I’m like, “OHMIGOD HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!” and we have to stop fast-forwarding through the commercials so I can watch it. :D

I was SO mad because if it had come out in November like it was supposed to, it would have been on my birthday!! I was thinking, “Wow, that’s going to be the best birthday present ever!” But then, of course, they had to change the stupid date….

Also, I’ve watched many, many trailers and previews and you’re right, it does look really good!!! I just hope that they don’t cut out too much like they did in the 5th movie. I mean, I know that it’s inevitable to cut out stuff when they’re such long books and all that, but I really believe that they should try harder to cut out the unimportant things, not the important ones. Although I’m not always impressed with the movies (the books are by far better in my opinion…but I do know several people who only watch the movies, and never read the books because they say they’re too long…) I love the actors they picked. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson are all amazing actors and are definitely perfect for the roles.

Finally, thanks so much GAPA’s for making a thread specifically for the Harry Potter movie!! :)

I was reading the wikipedia article on the differences between the movie and the book, (yes, I know that it could be wrong, but it’s usually right!) and they’re taking out Dumbledore’s funeral! This makes me angry… *grumblegrumble*
    They are also excluding Dobby.

  10. I-Man ((William II, OSW's Secretary)) says:

9 – There are three big things they’re doing:

    1. removing Dumbledore’s funeral because it “doesn’t fit with the film”
    2. removing the battle at the end to “avoid repetition” with the forthcoming adaptation of Deathly Hallows
    3. adding a scene where Bellatrix and Fenrir attack (and apparently destroy) the Burrow

I mean, the mere fact that they added/deleted those makes me angry, but the reasons they gave for the first two… *starts shaking so hard he can’t type*

      1. WHAAAAAT? But Dumbledore’s scene is ESSENTIAL! It’s how I discovered a very important thing about Book 7! And it’s really, really sad!!!
      2. WHAAAAAT? That’s just WRONG! Like, WRONG! That was a brilliant battle! *virtually stabs WB*
      3. Nooooo! Not the Burrow! Why the Burrow?! It didn’t even happen! *is mad*

        2. I KNOW! IT’S THE BEST END BATTLE IN THE SERIES, IN FACT!
        3. Actually, I’m not sure if they do destroy the burrow (just that they do attack it), but IT DIDN’T HAPPEN IN THE BOOK!!!

      1. How on earth could they do such a thing??? Dumbledore’s funeral/ death is one of the most important POINTS of the sixth and seventh books!

      2. This makes no sense. How can something be repetitious if the second part of said repetitiousness hasn’t even begun to repeat? *untangles brain*

      3. Why add? If they’re going to take out the actual EVENTS from the text then they don’t need to add more unnecessary scenes! And the Burrow! Grr. It’s my favorite HP location.

I don’t think I’ll see it. I love the book and all the books in the series, but the movies rip out any nuance or plot and make it all a smattering of special effects and big battles. Some parts are okay, but as a whole? I’m not that impressed. But I might as well so I can review it here. :)

I don’t know how they are going to bring it all together in the end. They didn’t even say the whole prophecy in the last movie… They’re probably going to have major plot-holes in the 7th and 8th movies.

          • soccer starr says:

Definitely…they should really think ahead a bit more in those cases. Although I do imagine they’ll probably just throw in a random mirror in some point and make it do what it’s supposed to.

10-I can’t believe they’re cutting out all those things!! ESPECIALLY Dumbledore’s funeral, although I did imagine they would even before I heard about it, because it’s not completely necessary to the whole series or anything like that. I mean, it’s important (to me, at least.) but I can understand how they would have to with timing issues and all that.

As for the fight at the end, well, there’s NO excuses for cutting out that! I mean, seriously, that’s the big climax-edge of your seat kind of part. The LEAST they could do was include the best part of the whole book… *Grumblegrumble.*

Also: has anyone heard that the movie’s going to be actually two different parts? I’ve heard some people saying that but I’ve never actually gotten it confirmed…

I saw a trailer thingy on Yahoo! Movies. As I guessed, it looks more like they’re showing off the cool things computers can do than they are stringing together plot lines from the book. Oh well. Trailers can be misleading, I guess. Still, I doubt I’ll go. Any time a movie has a fire scene that is unnecessary is a warning sign that I shouldn’t go.

    “No… can you introduce me?”
-a funny bit of dialogue from the scene where Ron eats the chocolate cauldrons that are spiked with love potion

    “Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?”
    ” ‘Who’ ?”

Where I find all scenes for my MAM (most anticipated movies)… Fandango. There’s probably 5 or so copies of each on Youtube as well.

Also, I’ve seen part of the Burrow scene, and it seems like a repetition of OOTP (Harry is chasing Bellatrix through the fields as she yells “I killed Sirius Black, I killed Sirius Black! You coming to get me?”, just like in OOTP.)

Purposeful, because it seemed like almost the exact same scene with two differences: Harry doesn’t find Bella and use the Cruciatus curse on her; and it’s in a field of corn/wheat/things instead of the MoM.

“I just got back from seeing it.) To be frank, it was a tad disappointing. There were a number of discrepancies from the book which all bugged me. The movie plot seemed muddled and disorganized, as though it couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a romance or an action movie, and didn’t know how to be both at once. Some of my favorite parts of the book were removed. My biggest problem with the movie was about the title of it. It’s called the Half-Blood Prince, right? They only mentioned that twice in the whole movie, and there was no speculation, as there was in the book, about who the Half-Blood Prince is, and this seems to me to take away why the movie’s called what it’s called. The special effects were great when you could tell someone really worked on them, but I noticed a few scenes when they were very poorly done.
So overall, I was disappointed. Yup.”

I felt similarly. I thought that the movie was great. When you add the factor of an really good book, constantly being compared, it was OK. They seemed to squeeze things together, more then they left out things; at least, that’s how I felt. The movie was 2 and a half hours, but it felt like a half an hour. This is similar to my problem with this particular book. It’s my least favorite of the series. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it misses something from the other books… I don’t know exactly what it is, though. The book seemed do lazily wander through the middle, but it takes a quick turn into excitement at the end. I must say that the ending is very good. The book/movie seem to not lead up to the last book in the way that the others do. Well, it does, but for most of the book/movie, it’s about romance and other things that are not as relevant in the other books/movies in the series. The more laid-back feel is nice, but I think it gets old; there are a select few important points in the middle of The Half-Blood Prince. IN CONCLUSION, a nice new feel to Harry Potter. Good movie, good book, but I think that is all. And to wrap it up, they didn’t play the theme song! (Unless I am mistaken) :P

Yay, I saw it! I actually thought that it was good. It was dark, certainly, but I thought that there was more humor (which was needed in the fifth), especially with Lavender Brown in the hospital wing. The part with the Inferi scared me, and I thought that the whole cave scene was done very well. It was rather annoying how they added the part where The Burrow burns down, the scene where Ginny kisses Harry in the Room of Requirement (did you notice that she is as tall as he is?), and I also found it slightly odd when Dumbledore was asking Harry about his personal life. I thought that Malfoy did a good job, too. In short, I thought that it was better than the fifth movie. Can’t wait for the seventh!

55.1- In regards to your last sentence, yes they did. Not often, but they did. (I don’t think that deserves a spoiler warning, does it? Well, this should be enough of a buffer by now for my upcoming comments on the movie. Hopefully. I guess we’ll find out.)

56- The cave scene was done quite well, except for the minor changes from the book to the movie, i.e. that Harry uses a seashell for some unexplained reason instead of a goblet. I actually appreciated the fact that they added the scene in the Room of Requirement, or at least the Ginny/Harry relationship plot point of the scene. It’s really the perfect setting to have a plot change like that–they’re away from everyone else, have an excuse to be there, and cannot be snooped upon. As for Dumbledore, his asking about Harry’s personal life does not seem uncharacteristic of him to me. He’s always a tad eccentric and very unpredictable. For me, it was sort of a glimmer of what he was like in the first movie, y’know?

Still, the biggest thing that bugged me was the entire lack of development concerning the title of the movie. It’s called the Half-Blood Prince, but that point was only brought up twice: first when Harry first gets the potions book, and second when Snape tells Harry that he was the Half-Blood Prince. If my memory serves me right, that potions book played a much larger role in the book than in the movie, as did Harry and company’s speculation of who the Half-Blood Prince was. I can understand artistic licence when books are modified into movies, but for me that was taking it too far.

POTENTIAL SPOILER FOR HP 6 MOVIE (ALTHOUGH NOT REALLY MUCH OF A SPOILER, BUT WHATEVER)

But, Piggy, by having that scene in the Room of Requirements with Ginny, it seriously screws up how Harry finds Ravenclaw’s Horcrux diadem. In the book, Harry remembers having used a tiara matching the description of the diadem to mark the spot in the RoR where he had hidden the HBP’s Potions Book. In the movie, there wasn’t even a diadem visible ANYWHERE in the background, so there is nothing done to make a memory of it stick in Harry’s mind come B7.

Luna, do you really think that’ll be a problem for the writers? There are a thousand other ways they could have him find the diadem. If, after five other movies, you’re still worried about them screwing up the plot, you need to just relax and trust the writers to come up with something. Granted, it won’t match the book, but there has never been a movie that matched its respective book exactly.

It’s just, which each subsequent one, I shudder to think about how DH is going to play out on screen. I’ve got this horrible sinking feeling that very little in it is going to be directly recognizable from the books….

And yes, after five other movies, I’m even more worried about them screwing up the plot–HBP had the most serious plot diversions of any, ones that will affect the plot of DH, making it even less like the book.

As for the other thousand ways Harry could find the Diadem? Sure, ok, but none of them are how it happened in the book.

And, dangit, why the heck are my wrists hurting me? They never hurt. Maybe I”m turning into one of those old people whose old injuries pain them when the weather changes. 86.1-I don’t remember Dobby appearing in the movie anywhere, which was a bit of a disappointment because he’s one of my favorite characters.

86-I agree with you. I think that they generally did do a good job plot-wise when they chose which parts to cut/include, setting up a very good picture for the remaining movies. I almost cried when Dumbledore died, but I did manage to control myself in the end.

I forgot to mention before, but I also liked how they showed Malfoy testing the Vanishing Cabinet, which you never get to read about in the book because of the limited point of view.

Wasn’t Harry supposed to disarm malfoy at some point? Deathly Hallow’s plot needed malfoy to be disarmed by harry for it to work. Also, Dumbledore’s hand was not shown enough. You needed to be paying close attention to notice much shriveling and discoloration.

They completely cut out the Weasley being bad at quidditch bit. that was annoying. Also, it seemed interesting how the Felix felices worked somewhat as a PLACEBO. hmm.

I didn’t think of Harry disarming Malfoy, but now that you’ve mentioned it I realize that you’re right. Harry having Malfoy’s wand becomes vital in the seventh book, and no doubt they’ll have to include it (or some form of it) in the movie/s.

Also, I didn’t even notice Dumbledore’s shriveled hand at all. Unless you’ve read the book, it’s not an obvious part of the movie.

Finally, I think that although Ron being bad at Quidditch would have made the story line more interesting, I think that the way it worked was fine enough. They probably just couldn’t find an extra slot to fill it in with, and there were more important parts to focus on.

It really is! There’s only a few complaints I have:

-cutscene and conversation (close-up, in other words) graphics and animation are actually a step or two down from OOTP
-there are things called crests to collect instead of discoveries, and occasionally you will see one on the wall that takes 10 throws of a bench to knock it down
-my Wiimote spazed out while I was playing today. It was probably a temporary thing, but it made playing annoying
-again, Quidditch is awful. You just fly through rings that are easy to see and are given several seconds to position yourself. The Wii version is even easier and worse, as you just have to point at the screen
            -occasional repetition

            Now, good things:
-it’s fun to collect mini-crests to make ordinary crests
-I haven’t tried this yet, but there is two-player dueling, and you can unlock more characters by collecting crests (Luna and Malfoy, e.g)
-Dueling is fun with actual health bars, barriers for protection, and the ability to dodge
-Potions is really fun, especially trying to master quick brewing

If you do get it, get the Wii version

A detailed breakdown of the movie:

    WARNING! Spoilers will abound.

    Favorite Actors:
    Didn’t-get-any-good-lines Malfoy
    Wasn’t-as-important-as-he-was-in-the-book Slughorn
Didn’t-get-enough-screen-time Boy Voldemort (I didn’t like the actor for the teenage Voldemort as much)

    Least Favorite Actors:
HP/DR (I mean, he didn’t even have any expression. And he waddled when he walked.
RW/RG (He was worst when he drank the love potion-I mean, it was so unrealistic)
Snape (He seemed like he was just done with the movies)

    Best Scenes:
    Memory at the Orphanage
    Fire in the Cave
    Ummm… I can’t think of any others I liked.

    Worst Scenes:
Burning of the Burrow (Although, as my dad remarked to me, they needed to find a way to show how much damage Death Eater attacks were doing without having Harry reading a newspaper article every 10 minutes)
Spinner’s End/SKD at the Astronomy Tower (Snape didn’t act evil at all! Plus, Dumbledore’s “Severus…please…” line didn’t even sound like pleading!)
Ron’s Love Potion (See my notes on RG’s acting)
    Bridge Action Sequence (‘Nough said)

    Extra Notes:
Harry and Ginny’s romance scenes were totally misrepresented. Also, I wished there could have been more than 2 memories, especially since Dumbledore says in the movie, “Voldemort’s Horcruxes could be anything,” something he EXPLICITLY denies in the book. Oh, and Jadestone, you were wrong. It was actually Harry Potter and the FIVE Mentions of the Half-Blood Prince. I counted.

    Overall Consensus:
The movie had no discernible plot. It had no clear beginning middle, or end. It was basically just scenes from the book. They could have made the plot, “What is Draco up to?” or “Who is the Half-Blood Prince?” They did neither, and so made a jumbled mess of a movie. WHY CAN’T ALFONSO CUARÓN KEEP DIRECTING THE MOVIES?????

And that is my HBP review. Thank you for reading.

    Not-so-great Actors:

Lavender Brown/Jessie Cave (“Ugly” pops into my head every time I see her, and Lavender seemed over-obsessed with Ron, even more so than the book)
    Remus Lupin/David Thewlis

    Best Scenes:
    -Harry arriving at the Burrow
-Gred and Forge’s joke shop (I know they’re really Fred and George, but I couldn’t resist throw that little SS joke in)
    -Quidditch scenes
-the orphanage memory and the real Horcrux memory
    -all of the HarryXGinny scenes
    -the cave

    Bad Scenes:
-burning of the Burrow (heck, the whole Burrow at Christmas scene was bad in general)
    -Intro scene with the bridge
    -Sectumsempra scene in the restroom
-the astronomy tower scene (Malfoy and Snape did some good acting, but the scene in general was bad)

Well, when I saw the movie, I started crying in the first few minutes, the first time we saw Dumbledore, because I knew what was going to happen to him and it was terrible.
And then I cried when Dumbledore fell. I was like quietly sobbing in the theatre. It was so sad. I felt devastated. Even though I’d read the book. (<- I cried during the book too, every time I read it. I think the Harry Potter series makes me cry the most. I get very attached.)

I was pissed when there was no battle. I was so looking forward to that.

And I was ecstatic when Bellatrix showed up. I adore that woman (Bella, not the actress), I honestly do. She’s so… EVIL. It’s so amazing how she mocks everyone, she’s like a cat and all the world is a mouse! I love Bellatrix so much.

Every time I see “HBP” I think “No, that’s supposed to be HPB – hot pink bunny” and then I remember that it’s referring to harry potter, not the museblog. *whacks self in head*

I thought Rupert was a wonderful actor, really filled the part well I thought. To those of you who disapprove of the love potion scene – it’s SUPPOSED to be unreal! He’s just fallen head of heels for someone he doesn’t even know! That’s exactly what a love potion is supposed to do to you. I thought he did great. And it was really funny.
Daniel was pretty good though more towards the “just okay” side of the scale. Emma Watson was charming (and gorgeous) as ever. The chick who play Ginny is just okay, but I can’t see her as good looking, I really can’t.
Tom Felton was cute as ever. But maybe he looked better in the last movie… hmmm, must go watch the fifth again.
I had no qualms with any of the actors’ hair this time. Just the right length, first time since the 3rd movie. FINALLY.
The guy who plays Snape has done a better job than this – the third movie was the best with him.

I saw the movie three times, which got to be a little too much when I saw it the last time.

I really like the Malfoy scenes. Tom Felton did good in the last scene with Dumbledore, with the almost lowering the wand thing, but then the rest of the Death Eaters arrive. Whenever I read the book at this part, I read it with a feeling of dread, because I know what’s going to happen, but sometimes I think that if I just concentrate hard enough, I can change what happens, and then I have to read the part where he falls five times, because I don’t believe it.

I really wish that they would have had the fight at the end. I always love the fight scenes in the book, because they’re really vivid to me, and I feel as though I could be there.

There were some slow parts that seemed disconnected in the movie, though not so in the book, but I suppose that’s because J.K. Rowling can write a 652 page book and people will still read it, because it’s Harry Potter, but the director can’t have the films too long because people who didn’t read the books wouldn’t see all the connections made in the book.

muselover: Your dad has a point about the Death Eaters causing destruction in a non-newspaper format.

The special effects were awesome, though I thought they could have used more of them. The Death Eater scene at the beginning was great, even though the bridge twisting so much was stretching reality a bit much for me.

As for the timeline of HP…Although I sympathize, I myself am quite happy with when the HP phenomenon started, as it allowed me to be young enough to get involved with it early on, when it was still very new, as opposed to being an “old” latecomer to the series, once it became a hit and adults realized it was good stuff for them, too. I was….eight, maybe nine, when I became introduced to the series, a year or so after the first book was released in the US. I myself wish I had become a pottermaniac a bit sooner, so that i could’ve gone to more than just 2 release parties. Well, three if you count the lame Beedle the Bard party that the campus bookstore had. i don’t, really, all it consisted of was them reading the entire (minus one story) book to us before they were even have supposed to open the boxes.

I have no clue where they’ll split the DH movie, though. I imagine wherever they do, it will be in the most stupidest spot possible, and will only serve to make the movie even worse than I already know it is going to be. How do I know this, you ask? Look at the director. then hop over and look at the director of the 2 worst HP movies in history, numbers 5&6. That’s right. They’re the same guy, the guy who butchered any hope potter fans had of the movies ever regaining any bit of goodness. No, no. I’ve read it now multiple times, it’s just that then, when the 7th book came out, I hadn’t quite finished yet because I had just started the series a few months before and was desperately trying to finish it before the 7th one came out, but I think I can remember not quite making it. You can relax. :D

Uh, yeah, I know….I got that you meant that you hadn’t finished it when the 7th came out, not that you hadn’t finished it yet, now. As I said, I’d read it three times by then, but….If you’d only started the series shortly before, I can see why there might have been a bit of difficulty there.

*sigh* At least you didn’t get carried away on a rant and manage to basically tell your sister everything that happened in book seven, by screaming at the top of your lungs during the rant that all your theories were proved correct. whoops. Guilty as charged.

I think they had release parties as early as the fourth, but I”m not sure. I didn’t become a fanatic until shortly after OotP, so I could be wrong.

I went to parties for 6 & 7, too, and was much closer than I like to think about to not getting a book at the 6th one. When it was released, we were on vacation visiting my grandma in FL, and had a 7 day pass to Disney World. Of course, my grandma lives a fairly decent drive from there (well over an hour), and my mom wasn’t sure if it would work out to get me to a release party AND get me a book there (after all, you ahd to preorder). However, they did have me a book on order to be delivered to my grandma’s Monday morning, but then July 15, the day of the midnight parties on the drive to Orlando (we were going to ANimal Kingdom that day), my mom informed me (in the hopes of getting me and my sister to stop our bickering), that I was going to an HP party that night AND was going to get to get a book there, and not ahve to wait. So, needless to say, i was incredibly happy, but…..It did absolutely nothing for my sister and mine’s fighting. Between the heat and the cramped quarters (little car, me, my sis, and my grandma all crammed into the back seat together), neither of us were in a very agreeable mood, and, well, the fighting continued. All. Day. Long. XD

I went to a party for the sixth for maybe an hour, then ended up getting the book a week later. I got the seventh book at midnight. ^^

I did not even get to go to the 7th one seeing as I was on vacation and My parents didn’t think I should have. So I ended up buying the book at Wal-mart of all places around three in the afternoon. and was finished by 8 the next morning. I dragged it to the fair and read it there so it has cotton candy on a few of the pages, and greasy fingerprints on the cover from eating cheese curds. I like cheese curds. I wonder If cheese curds in the wizarding world would bounce? (in a good way. School sausages bounce too, but in a very unnnapetizing manner).

Post on anything related to HP or post anywhere about HP, and the resident pottermaniac comes running. And babbling. On and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. And nothing you do can possibly make her shut up. She even manages to way lay non-HP threads and somehow turn them into discussion of HP related topics. Trust me on this. She and I are very intimately connected, seeing as we’re the same person…..

You’re worse than I am! :D And my friends can tell you how hard that is. (Of course, I’ve known this for a while, I’m just commenting on it now. Lazy me) Everything has some bit of Potterness in it, to my obsessed eyes.

        Do you read fanfiction?

I try, luv, I try. No, wait, that’s not true. I don’t try–it’s a natural talent. But, yes, I can see connections and parallels to Harry Potter in everything. Even just the way a sentence gets phrased, it sometimes forcibly reminds me of a sentence or event in the series…..

yes, I’ve been known to read fanfiction upon occasion. The best (and definitely longest) I’ve read was probably Cassandra Clare’s Draco Trilogy, but she’s removed ’em all from the net, I think because she decided to actually write a book of her own…..of course, i’ve got ’em all on my computer.

Actually, I’ve even been known to write a wee bit, although the two i started never got complete, the first one i started, I actually posted some of on the ‘blog (don’t read it, it really, really, really is very horrible, indeed, especially given everything that I know now, and that I knew when i started my other one). The second one I started, I think I got about two pages into, before, well, probably before I finished that year of school, and thus it was summer time and I no longer had need of a procrastination technique, so therefore I had no reason to continue writing it. It had much, much better potential, as it was so much more canon, even down to Snape being in love with Lily. it was started post HBP, but ignored the entirety of it, as though that book was never written.

But, yeah, the second I might (but probably not) return to one day, the first I highly doubt I ever will. It’s too…..*shudder*

I just saw HBP last night at a 4 Quarters 4 Kinds fundraiser at school, and it’s still my favorite one by far. I know, I know – there are some pretty big plot holes. However, that happens a lot with Hollywood and fantasy/sci-fi/adventure books, so I was kind of expecting it.

So besides the plot, my biggest complaint is that Lavender Brown just looks like an ugly witch
