NON-PoPoPo FIRST POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve read the book, there are these things called Inferi, they are corpses reanimated by dark magic (probably the Impirus curse) and are GROSS!!!!! The Move has ’em.
You mean “non-PoPo, right? The PoPoPo is the Pointless Post Police.
I Meant: the PoPoPo not fining me. And has any MBer seen the preview?
Define “preview” – I’ve seen so many clips and pictures and stuff that I’ve lost count.
Movie Ad.
YAY! It’s finally here! I really want to see the midnight opening…
It’s my first first post!
SFTDP
Nevermind… I saw the inferi in the commercial, and they look like Gollum, from Lord of The Rings.
…and that’s why I’m waching part of the movie.
I’m going to be at camp. And they aren’t even taking us for our our field trip! The NERVE of them!!!
Sorry to hear that…that really stinks…
I will see it in England probably.
2.1 – I totally thought that.
It looks AWESOME! But I’m probably not going to see it on opening night since I’m going to be at camp . I probably will get to see it, but since this is my favorite, I really wanna see it on opening night.
Most of the pre-screening reviews are positive, however.
This doesn’t open until the 15th up here. *anger*
I think that’s when it comes out everywhere. I guess, technically, it’ll be, what, six hours earlier in the UK. Or am I completely off? I’m just speculating.
Wait a minute…when does this even come out? *lives under a rock*
Thank you GAPAs!!! I didn’t think you’d make a thread devoted to the movie! *surprise*
4-In England? That’s so cool! Do you live there?
6-It opens on the 15th here, too. Stupid WB……we could have seen it in November, for crying out loud!
I might go see it at midnight, but I don’t think my parents would be to enthused with the idea. But who knows, they surprise me a lot. The preview for the movie makes me SO EXCITED!!! If my parents and I are watching a recorded show and there’s a preview, I’m like, “OHMIGOD HARRY POTTER!!!!!!!!!” and we have to stop fast-forwarding through the commercials so I can watch it.
I was SO mad because if it had come out in November like it was supposed to, it would have been on my birthday!! I was thinking, “Wow, that’s going to be the best birthday present ever!” But then, of course, they had to change the stupid date….
Also, I’ve watched many, many trailers and previews and you’re right, it does look really good!!! I just hope that they don’t cut out too much like they did in the 5th movie. I mean, I know that it’s inevitable to cut out stuff when they’re such long books and all that, but I really believe that they should try harder to cut out the unimportant things, not the important ones. Although I’m not always impressed with the movies (the books are by far better in my opinion…but I do know several people who only watch the movies, and never read the books because they say they’re too long…) I love the actors they picked. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson are all amazing actors and are definitely perfect for the roles.
Finally, thanks so much GAPA’s for making a thread specifically for the Harry Potter movie!!
I was reading the wikipedia article on the differences between the movie and the book, (yes, I know that it could be wrong, but it’s usually right!) and they’re taking out Dumbledore’s funeral! This makes me angry… *grumblegrumble*
They are also excluding Dobby.
They’re taking out Dumbledore’s funeral?????? But they can’t do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT?! YOU SPOILED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What did he spoil? If you’ve read the book Unless you’ve lived in a cave for the past four years, then you’ll know Dumbledore dies. If you haven’t read the book, then you’ve no business watching the film.
I think Catkopelli’s talking about spoiling the movie, not the book. But Catkopelli, if you don’t want to hear about the movie, just don’t read this thread.
Oh…
9 – There are three big things they’re doing:
1. removing Dumbledore’s funeral because it “doesn’t fit with the film”
2. removing the battle at the end to “avoid repetition” with the forthcoming adaptation of Deathly Hallows
3. adding a scene where Bellatrix and Fenrir attack (and apparently destroy) the Burrow
I mean, the mere fact that they added/deleted those makes me angry, but the reasons they gave for the first two… *starts shaking so hard he can’t type*
1. WHAAAAAT? But Dumbledore’s scene is ESSENTIAL! It’s how I discovered a very important thing about Book 7! And it’s really, really sad!!!
2. WHAAAAAT? That’s just WRONG! Like, WRONG! That was a brilliant battle! *virtually stabs WB*
3. Nooooo! Not the Burrow! Why the Burrow?! It didn’t even happen! *is mad*
1. I KNOW! I don’t CARE if it doesn’t fit with the lighter feel of the film – I WANT DD’S FUNERAL!
2. I KNOW! IT’S THE BEST END BATTLE IN THE SERIES, IN FACT!
3. Actually, I’m not sure if they do destroy the burrow (just that they do attack it), but IT DIDN’T HAPPEN IN THE BOOK!!!
3. Isn’t there a party there in the 7th book?
A wedding, to be exact. I can’t imagine how they would pull that off.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s ridiculous. I was so angry after the fifth one. I understand that the book was too long to put it all in, but they could have made it much longer- and better.
1. How on earth could they do such a thing??? Dumbledore’s funeral/ death is one of the most important POINTS of the sixth and seventh books!
2. This makes no sense. How can something be repetitious if the second part of said repetitiousness hasn’t even begun to repeat? *untangles brain*
3. Why add? If they’re going to take out the actual EVENTS from the text then they don’t need to add more unnecessary scenes! And the Burrow! Grr. It’s my favorite HP location.
I’m angry. But I’ll still go see it. ^-^
No! This is not true! Destroy the Burrow?! It’s vital to the Deathlhy Hallows movie?!
Why?
Why?
WHY!!!!!!!!!!!
I don’t think I’ll see it. I love the book and all the books in the series, but the movies rip out any nuance or plot and make it all a smattering of special effects and big battles. Some parts are okay, but as a whole? I’m not that impressed. But I might as well so I can review it here.
They’re taking out Dumbledore’s funeral? That makes no sense…
I don’t know how they are going to bring it all together in the end. They didn’t even say the whole prophecy in the last movie… They’re probably going to have major plot-holes in the 7th and 8th movies.
You should see it! It obviously isn’t as good as the books, but I wouldn’t want to miss out on seeing it happen!
Well, they didn’t say the whole prophecy, but they said most of it – enough to get the idea.
And they left out Sirius’s mirror. That is going to cause major problems in the seventh movie(s).
Definitely…they should really think ahead a bit more in those cases. Although I do imagine they’ll probably just throw in a random mirror in some point and make it do what it’s supposed to.
10-I can’t believe they’re cutting out all those things!! ESPECIALLY Dumbledore’s funeral, although I did imagine they would even before I heard about it, because it’s not completely necessary to the whole series or anything like that. I mean, it’s important (to me, at least.) but I can understand how they would have to with timing issues and all that.
As for the fight at the end, well, there’s NO excuses for cutting out that! I mean, seriously, that’s the big climax-edge of your seat kind of part. The LEAST they could do was include the best part of the whole book… *Grumblegrumble.*
Also: has anyone heard that the movie’s going to be actually two different parts? I’ve heard some people saying that but I’ve never actually gotten it confirmed…
the 7th movie’s going to be two parts.
And I don’t CARE if the epic battle at the end is going to be “repetitive” with DH – I wants my epic battlz!
I want my battle too!!! GRRRRRR…
Didn’t they only say one sentence?
Maybe Dumbledore’s funeral will be moved to the final (two-part) movie? Maybe the DVDs will contain scenes that the theatrical releases omit? (I don’t know about the HP movies, but the Lord of the Rings DVDs added some scenes that explained some important points.) If not, there are always flashbacks.
They CAN’T move it to the movie for Deathly Hallows! IT DOESN’T HAPPEN IN DEATHLY HALLOWS!
I know, I’m not even in MIDDLE SCHOOL,and I’ve read the whole seiries, and watched it. (so far.)
What does not being in middle school have to do with it?
YOU spoiled the end?!
Everybody who cares about the movie has probably read the book by now.
Pah, hopefully they won’t put out a junior novelization for it like they did for Hotel for Dogs. *sigh* That’s right: a book based on a movie based on a book. That is so messed up.
The birds. Tell me they kept the birds. Please.
… What birds?
I don’t remember any birds…
Hermione attacks Ron with flying canaries? I think that’s what he means…maybe…but that’s all I remember.
Ohhhhh, right… yeah, I think they keep those.
But that’s not a major part of the book, is it? I’m actually kind of surprised they’re keeping that bit. I mean, it’s funny and all, but other than that…
It shows… relationship between Ron and Hermione?
Ahh, that scene is amazing.
SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER 6 MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER.
They kept the birds.
I got an exclusive, only-for-iTunes clip from HBP!!!! It looks awesome! I know I’ll probably be dissapointed with what they leave out in the movie, but I’m still excited!!!!!!!!!
13 – the owls, you mean? I’ve read the Harry Potter books over a dozen times and I don’t know of any other birds…
I saw a trailer thingy on Yahoo! Movies. As I guessed, it looks more like they’re showing off the cool things computers can do than they are stringing together plot lines from the book. Oh well. Trailers can be misleading, I guess. Still, I doubt I’ll go. Any time a movie has a fire scene that is unnecessary is a warning sign that I shouldn’t go.
I have a really bad phobia of fire, in case I didn’t mention that.
SFTDP (cool abbreviation!)
Hey, I just realized – it opens today in the U.S.! Is anyone going to see it? I almost never go to premieres because they’re so crowded.
Sorry, Kiga, but it isn’t open in the US yet. We’ve got to wait a whole ‘nother week… *dies of impatience*
Wait, I thought this didn’t open in the US until the 15th/14th. Is that only for some cities?
It does? Then why does ‘Coming Soon’ say
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” opens in the United States on Wednesday, 08 July 2009?
I’m not doubting you or anything… I’m just confused…
July 8 is the date of its premiere in New York City. The rest of the country will see it a week later.
Darn! But Thanks For All The Fish will see it first(maybe)and tell us all about i.Right?
Sorry… I don’t live in New York City…
Now I wish I lived in New York. *mopes*
Is it on that date in long island (visiting stupid cousins)?
I like Harry potter, but i dont love it.
You don’t love Harry Potter? How COULD you!?!?!?! Nah, just kidding…maybe…
19 – I wonder why they do that.
I was just watching some scenes of the movie, and I found two really good quotes:
“It’s no joke! I’m in love with her!”
“All right, fine, you’re in love with her – have you ever actually met her?”
“No… can you introduce me?”
-a funny bit of dialogue from the scene where Ron eats the chocolate cauldrons that are spiked with love potion
“Who’s the Half-Blood Prince?”
” ‘Who’ ?”
“That’s what it says right here – ‘This book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince.’ ”
-a more serious part from the scene where Hermione asks whose the book was
How did you find those scenes? But cool… that first one is really funny.
I’m not going to see it. I haven’t seen any of the movies, except for half of the first and most of the third, without sound. We’re probably going to rent them all on DVD once my dad finishes reading the series out loud. If we were going, we’d go with Mom, since Dad hasn’t read the sixth book yet. Right, concluding a long and pointless post.
Where I find all scenes for my MAM (most anticipated movies)… Fandango. There’s probably 5 or so copies of each on Youtube as well.
Also, I’ve seen part of the Burrow scene, and it seems like a repetition of OOTP (Harry is chasing Bellatrix through the fields as she yells “I killed Sirius Black, I killed Sirius Black! You coming to get me?”, just like in OOTP.)
Humor.Just so overlooked.
The PoPoPo fines you…. a lot of choklit. PAY UP this time.
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Huh. Did it seem like that was purposefully a repetition, or just an accidental copy-and-paste?
Purposeful, because it seemed like almost the exact same scene with two differences: Harry doesn’t find Bella and use the Cruciatus curse on her; and it’s in a field of corn/wheat/things instead of the MoM.
And if it is purposeful, then they are being a bunch of bloody hypocrites.
I’m not surprised. I’m don’t even remotely want to see the movie, except for criticism.
The whole franchise just makes me groan, to be honest. I might watch it out of curiosity.
Oh, and no, I don’t like the books either, but they were part of my childhood.
YESSS!!!! I got tickets to see it on the opening day! Not at midnight, though. My parents wouldn’t even considere going to the midnight show…..oh well. At least I have tickets!
Cool! Tell us how it is, please
Lucky. I want to go to opening night but I’m going to be in camp … I’ll probably have to wait at least until that weekend (17th-19th) to see it.
32-I definitely will!!
The full quotation from a scene I mentioned earlier:
“See that girl over there? That’s Romilda Vane.” *Romilda looks at Harry from across the library and smiles* “Apparently she’s trying to smuggle you a love potion.”
“Really?” *Harry looks over at Romilda*
*Hermione snaps his fingers in front of his face* “Hey! She’s only interested in you because she thinks you’re the Chosen One.”
“But I am the chosen one! *she hits him on the head with a pamphlet* OK, sorry, um… kidding.”
-Hermione and Harry in Romilda’s (apparently) first scene
Ha ha! Funny! Thanks for the “snippets”…
Darn.I lost my copy.My only copy.
I can’t wait until it comes out!!!!!!! Me, my dad and my sister are going to see it on the fifteenth. We are going to have a butt numbing, eye plastered open, pizza eating day on the fifteenth.
But WHY do we have to see it on the fifteenth?!??!!!? We could have seen it in November. But NO, they HAD to change it. WHY???!!??!? Because they wanted to torture people who REALLY wanted to see Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince? WHY??!!!?!??? *keeps on ranting for hours*
Ummm…this could be (Correction: almost positively is) a rumor, but I heard that it was because of the Twilight movie coming out then. Even though I know that that is almost positively a rumor, (I mean, it doesn’t even make much sense…) it still makes me mad just to think about. Like, so mad I feel like I should punch something. *Runs over to a pillow and punches it a few times*
OH MY SQUASH!!!!!!!!! THREE DAYYYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THREE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Three more movies to watch before it. One more basement floor to pick up. *picks stuff off basement floor*
2 DAYS!!! I can’t wait!!!! I hope this movie is worth the excitement.
Me too!!! I get to watch the fourth movie tonight and the fifth on the 14 and the sixth (at theater) on the 15!!!!!! Can’t wait till fifteenth!!
No offense, Catopelli, but do you think you could not make so many exclamation points and E’s next time? It makes it hard on my computer to stay. Thanks!
They’ve been snipped down to size.
Has anyone else heard that it’s going to be PG instead of PG 13. I think that’s what I heard. To me, that just ruins it. I mean, how are they going to fit the deep phsychological (ugh I spell terribly) issues into a PG rating????
I wasn’t aware that Warner Bros. cared about deep psychological issues when it came to Harry Potter.
TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT!!!!!
Is there really a midnight showing?
Yes. Although I would probably fall asleep during the movie if I went to it.
I’ve heard that it’s PG too, and I agree, I’m very surprised. I mean, all the movies since (I think) the second one have been PG 13. And although I’m sure my parents will be happier knowing that the movie will probably be more “appropriate” it does make me wonder just how good it will be…not saying that a movie has to be rated badly to be good, it just makes me…wonder.
I see what you mean, but I can kind of see why they did it… Still, don’t worry, I’m pretty sure it’ll be more PG-13, and include all the psychological stuff (which you spelled pretty well, actually!)
I was surprised that it was PG too. Hang on, I read in the paper why it was PG…..
Ah, here’s what it says:
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG for scary images, some violence, language, and mild sensuality. Running time: 153 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.
So I guess it won’t be as violent as the other movies? I guess we’ll just have to find out in ONE DAY!!!!!!!!
Is anyone going at midnight? I want to, but none of my friends can…
I really wanted to but my parents wouldn’t think of going at midnight.
Funny, my dad heard people on the radio saying that it’s the darkest of all of them.
Like you said. One day…
Well I would hope it’s the darkest of all!
Each book/movie gets darker and darker… Remember the first movie? It was so happy and jolly. Now, it’s like, “Harry you are the chosen one, but you have to die.”
I HATED the darkness in the 3rd and 4th movies. The plot isn’t even remotely dark until the 5th!
That’s why I stopped reading and watching them… I can’t handle that much darkness.
Yeah, I can remember the first one…the kids basically look like babies then compared to now!! It’s kind of funny to go back and watch them because not only do they look different, I can also see a difference in their acting, too.
45.1.1- The third movie was a little too dark, but I don’t think that the fourth movie was that bad. It was a bit dark, but it suited the movie.
45.1.2-Wait, so you haven’t read the series, nor seen all of the movies? Because of the darkness?! It’s not that bad, is it?
I’ve read the first four. I started reading the fifth and sixth, but stopped. As for the movies, I’ve only seen the first three.
Rowling did say that she planned to increase the level of austerity and violence progressively as each book went along. She wanted her readers to grow with the books.
Lame. You taint a potentially badass horror story by permanently associating it with prepubescent children running around with sticks.
I’d say it is. The Horcruxes… the dying… yeah, that’s pretty dark.
Today is the day!!!!!!!!! I’m über excited! Has anyone seen it yet? I’m going to see it later.
Cool! I hope you like it.
I SAW IT!!!
[SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER.]
And it was AMAZING! MUCH better than Movie 4 and Movie 5, which had gaping plot holes! (This is probably because it stuck to the book much more closely, which it was able to do as Book 6 was not 870 pages long.) It was funny, and the actors were wonderful, and even though they cut out Dumbledore’s funeral it was okay, and it survived perfectly without the battle scene at the end, and the Burrow destruction scene actually worked-
It was GREAT! At least compared to the others.
Oh, yeah. Sorry for not sticking the spoiler warning in there myself, GAPAs. Must remember next time.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER. Well, ah, sort of.
How on earth did the Burrow destruction scene work? There’s going to be a wedding and Harry’s birthday party in it the following summer.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
They could probably rebuild it by magic.
50 – You liked it? GREAT!!! That inspires me to see it. Was the Burrow destruction scene scary? Yes, I know it’s ALL scary, but…
SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER 6 MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER.
I don’t think there will be a wedding there, actually. There wasn’t a single mention of Bill and Fleur there. Not one.
…SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER 6 MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER 6 MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER.
But the attack is AT THE WEDDING. And that’s when you meet the Lovegoods. Trashing the wedding screws tons of stuff up. And what about Harry’s party?!
SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER 6 MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER.
They announced that before-hand, but they have to have the wedding, don’t they? That’s where Luna’s dad wears the shirt with the sign on it, and then some dude gets mad about it. I don’t remember the details, but that does lead up to them learning about the Deathly Hallows…
SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER 6 MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER HARRY POTTER: DEATHLY HALLOWS SPOILER SPOILER
WAIT. No wedding?!?!?! But – but – but – but… That’s where Xenophilius wears the Deathly Hallows symbol! That’s where they find out about it! That’s also where Viktor Krum gets mad, so they think it’s Grindevald’s symbol! And when they escape to Tottenham Court and find out that saying Voldemort’s name gets them attacked!
They can’t get rid of the wedding scene. They just can’t.
50.2 – Agreed. I mean, even if it technically fits, it messes up the plot. Not that this isn’t the first time.
This is probably what happened: It gets destroyed, and the Weasleys use magic to repair it. Simple.
HRUMPH. I’m MAD. I was going to see it, but my friend COULDN’T. GO. So I can’t. Go. Now I have to *gasp* wait ’til TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys need to make longer spoiler announcements to keep your comments from appearing in Recent Comments.
Okay. Is eight spoilers enough?
I’m off to dinner now, but I’ll copy and paste my thoughts from elsewhere. (SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER.)
“I just got back from seeing it.) To be frank, it was a tad disappointing. There were a number of discrepancies from the book which all bugged me. The movie plot seemed muddled and disorganized, as though it couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a romance or an action movie, and didn’t know how to be both at once. Some of my favorite parts of the book were removed. My biggest problem with the movie was about the title of it. It’s called the Half-Blood Prince, right? They only mentioned that twice in the whole movie, and there was no speculation, as there was in the book, about who the Half-Blood Prince is, and this seems to me to take away why the movie’s called what it’s called. The special effects were great when you could tell someone really worked on them, but I noticed a few scenes when they were very poorly done.
So overall, I was disappointed. Yup.”
YAY! I SAW IT!

I felt similarly. I thought that the movie was great. When you add the factor of an really good book, constantly being compared, it was OK. They seemed to squeeze things together, more then they left out things; at least, that’s how I felt. The movie was 2 and a half hours, but it felt like a half an hour. This is similar to my problem with this particular book. It’s my least favorite of the series. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it misses something from the other books… I don’t know exactly what it is, though. The book seemed do lazily wander through the middle, but it takes a quick turn into excitement at the end. I must say that the ending is very good. The book/movie seem to not lead up to the last book in the way that the others do. Well, it does, but for most of the book/movie, it’s about romance and other things that are not as relevant in the other books/movies in the series. The more laid-back feel is nice, but I think it gets old; there are a select few important points in the middle of The Half-Blood Prince. IN CONCLUSION, a nice new feel to Harry Potter. Good movie, good book, but I think that is all. And to wrap it up, they didn’t play the theme song! (Unless I am mistaken)

Yay, I saw it! I actually thought that it was good. It was dark, certainly, but I thought that there was more humor (which was needed in the fifth), especially with Lavender Brown in the hospital wing. The part with the Inferi scared me, and I thought that the whole cave scene was done very well. It was rather annoying how they added the part where The Burrow burns down, the scene where Ginny kisses Harry in the Room of Requirement (did you notice that she is as tall as he is?), and I also found it slightly odd when Dumbledore was asking Harry about his personal life. I thought that Malfoy did a good job, too. In short, I thought that it was better than the fifth movie. Can’t wait for the seventh!
[HP MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER HP MOVIE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER — “Spoilerguard” added so people won’t unwittingly open open your comment while it’s in the recent comments column. — Rosanne]
55.1- In regards to your last sentence, yes they did. Not often, but they did. (I don’t think that deserves a spoiler warning, does it? Well, this should be enough of a buffer by now for my upcoming comments on the movie. Hopefully. I guess we’ll find out.)
56- The cave scene was done quite well, except for the minor changes from the book to the movie, i.e. that Harry uses a seashell for some unexplained reason instead of a goblet. I actually appreciated the fact that they added the scene in the Room of Requirement, or at least the Ginny/Harry relationship plot point of the scene. It’s really the perfect setting to have a plot change like that–they’re away from everyone else, have an excuse to be there, and cannot be snooped upon. As for Dumbledore, his asking about Harry’s personal life does not seem uncharacteristic of him to me. He’s always a tad eccentric and very unpredictable. For me, it was sort of a glimmer of what he was like in the first movie, y’know?
Still, the biggest thing that bugged me was the entire lack of development concerning the title of the movie. It’s called the Half-Blood Prince, but that point was only brought up twice: first when Harry first gets the potions book, and second when Snape tells Harry that he was the Half-Blood Prince. If my memory serves me right, that potions book played a much larger role in the book than in the movie, as did Harry and company’s speculation of who the Half-Blood Prince was. I can understand artistic licence when books are modified into movies, but for me that was taking it too far.
((I still don’t see why that would need a spoiler warning. It directly refers to nothing in the movie; no one reading the recent comments bar (or the first part of my post on its own, for that matter) could divine anything about the movie from it without reading TFATF42’s post as well. Whatever, I ought not question the GAPArian wisdom.))
POTENTIAL SPOILER FOR HP 6 MOVIE (ALTHOUGH NOT REALLY MUCH OF A SPOILER, BUT WHATEVER)
But, Piggy, by having that scene in the Room of Requirements with Ginny, it seriously screws up how Harry finds Ravenclaw’s Horcrux diadem. In the book, Harry remembers having used a tiara matching the description of the diadem to mark the spot in the RoR where he had hidden the HBP’s Potions Book. In the movie, there wasn’t even a diadem visible ANYWHERE in the background, so there is nothing done to make a memory of it stick in Harry’s mind come B7.
(POTENTIAL SPOILER FOR HP 6 MOVIE (ALTHOUGH NOT REALLY MUCH OF A SPOILER, BUT WHATEVER)
Luna, do you really think that’ll be a problem for the writers? There are a thousand other ways they could have him find the diadem. If, after five other movies, you’re still worried about them screwing up the plot, you need to just relax and trust the writers to come up with something. Granted, it won’t match the book, but there has never been a movie that matched its respective book exactly.
Wait, an HPB potion book? *shuddershudder*
Hey, you copied my spoiler warning!
Oh, I’m sure the writers will come up with some way around their omissions/plot changes in HBP. It’s just, which each subsequent one, I shudder to think about how DH is going to play out on screen. I’ve got this horrible sinking feeling that very little in it is going to be directly recognizable from the books….
And yes, after five other movies, I’m even more worried about them screwing up the plot–HBP had the most serious plot diversions of any, ones that will affect the plot of DH, making it even less like the book.
As for the other thousand ways Harry could find the Diadem? Sure, ok, but none of them are how it happened in the book.
And, dangit, why the heck are my wrists hurting me? They never hurt. Maybe I”m turning into one of those old people whose old injuries pain them when the weather changes. (I fractured the growth plates on both wrists 10 years ago, but they’ve NEVER bothered me at all. I just can’t think what I could have done recently to make ’em bother me for any reason….) Well, on the bright side, maybe that means it’s going to rain….Well, supposedly there will be t hundershowers tomorrow.
I most certainly did not copy your spoiler warning. Even a casual glance at mine reveals an unnecessary parenthesis at the beginning.
You really can’t look at the movies and the books as the same storyline. As long as writers and directors must meddle in plots, the viewers must treat them as two separate things.
Perhaps the increased amount of typing is hurting your wrists? MuseBlog can be hazardous in large amounts, especially when one has fallen out of habit.
Hmmm, perhaps. Whatever the cause, dinner seems to have cured me–temporarily, at least.
AS for the movies, I wish I could look at them as two separate things. Unfortunately, when it comes to books being made into movies, I have this block–I just can’t stand it when things get changed, especially relatively major things. It doesn’t matter what the book is (although I take HP to the extremes). The only exception being Merlin. I actually like that TV series, despite its huge deviations from common Arthurian legend. Besides, Merlin’s cute.
Well, naturally: You’re a Potterian fundamentalist, not an Arthurian fundamentalist. It stands to reason that misrepresentations of the Arthur legend wouldn’t seem like blasphemy to you.
Hi, Piggy,
I just added an explanation to the post. It’s not vital to have the spoiler warning, like you said. But it does protect people who (like me) sometimes don’t pay very close attention and just go through the recent comments one by one to see what’s been going on lately.
Darn you GAPAs and your retroediting.
Mwahahahaha

Okay, I will just HAVE to see it one of these days. A bunch of you are liking it, it seems. I just like movies that are more stories than ‘oh, wow, look what we can do with special effects!’
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER……………………….
YES! I thought it was AMAZING! Yes, they left out Bill and Fleur, yes, they messed some other stuff up and added scenes, but I thought that it really worked. The actors and actresses really fit their characters well (except Dumbledore, who I’ve never liked since the original one died). I’m just so excited!!!!!
Yes, I rather liked the aura of the old one. He had such an old voice; you could hear the wisdom in it. I still like this one, though. I guess you won’t have to see him in the next movie though!
Yayyyyy- *shuts up* The new one is kind of… weird. Maybe it’s because of his ponytail.
He’s just so……un-Dumbledore like…..I guess….
You mean the one on his beard?
*laughs at the strangeness of the question*
I liked the old Dumbledore A LOT more than the new one. I thought that he just sounded older, smarter, and much more like the Dumbledore Rowling describes in the books. The newer one, however, seemed much younger and much more self centered than the original actor. And the ponytail thing has always creeped me out, although I’m not really sure why…

Oh – hey – did they ever have Luna do the Quidditch match? That was one of my favorite parts of the book.
*gulp* Sadly, no. (Why is that a spoiler?) They left out the Quidditch Cup…
I haven’t read the book in a while, but now I’m sad that I didn’t remember one of the best parts!

I saw it!
I was pleasantly surprised. Althought the whole burning Burrow scene /didn’t even happen/ so it was kind of ruined for me, it was overall done very well. Better than the rest. However, leaving out the fight at Hogwarts, Ginny and Harry’s first kiss (URGH! so mad) and a bunch of lines I thought were great severely pissed me off.
How are Fleur and Bill going to get married if their house burned down? I don’t even get the point of that scene at all.
Is the burning Burrow scene in place of burning Hagrid’s hut? Or did they have both?
64 – Both.
Best. Movie. YET!

I think my favorite scenes were the joke shop, the two quidditch scenes, and Harry and Ginny kissing (which I thought was actually much improved over the book).
SSSSSSSSSSPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPOOOOOOOOOOOOIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Well. I have several things to say on this topic.
1. As the movie goes on fermenting in my brain, it gets worse
2. They completely skipped the battle scene at the end with the Death Eaters and Harry’s friends and the felix felicis (which I thought the directors were going to drag out endlessley)
3. The Burrow never burned down
4. They left out Snape’s defense against the dark arts classes
5. They left out Harry skipping the “Slug Club” meetings
6. The inferi looked like Gollum
7. No Dursleys
8. No Dobby and Kreacher stalking Malfoy
9. The horcrux was supposed to be gold with an ornate “S” on it
10. Bellatrix Lestrange was drunk for the entire movie
This list could continue for quite a long while but I will stop now seeing as I have reached 10.
You know, I was going to harp, but you said everything I was thinking, so thats fantastic!
I seriously doubt this is a spoiler, because this is just an opinion and doesn’t actually mention anything from the book.
That’s terrible. Seriously.
…I think I will go and cry now.
What’s Gollum?
…
-shun-
Gollum is from the Lord of the Rings which is better than Harry Potter any day (thought still way too popular but at least more advanced and more interesting and not about teenagers and don’t base it off the movies because they left out Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Downs and made Pippin more of an idiot than he ever was in the book but are still good) and is the basis for all epic fantasies of that sort and one of the only decent epic fantasies of that sort in existence. if you haven’t already read it you should read it now.

And Robert, you said on the Lunacy thread that you saw it. How was it? Would you recommend it?

I liked the movie. ‘Twas good. It left out too much though. I totally missed the huge battle scene after Dumbledore dies. And, there was no Dark Mark over Hogwarts! Oh well. And I agree on the fact that the inferi looked like gollum.
What do you mean there was no Dark Mark over Hogwarts?? There bloody well was! You just didn’t see it!
The Inferi did look like Gollum though.
I must have missed it cause it was the one made of clouds. The Mark in the fourth movie was clearer because it wasn’t just a cloud, it was made of light as well.

I would recommend it. Even if it were just a slide show with no plot at all, it would still be worth watching just because everything looked so good.
SPOILER! [Make your spoilers longer or else revelations may appear in recent comments –Admin.] SPOILER!
OK. I said I wasn’t going to harp. BUt I changed my mind. WHY DID THEY NOT HAVE A BATTLE SCENE AT THE END?! It was simply ridiculous! The enemy just walked in and out without any resistance at all, unless you count Harry, which doesn’t really count because he’s just a stupid kid. What, was the whole school just standing there crying over Dumbledore while the Deatheaters wrecked havoc?! It was so STUPID! And they didn’t even have a screaming Hagrid when they burned his hut down!
Plus, they didn’t have all that much about the Half-Blood Prince (aka Snape). That’s what it was supposed to focus on was it not?! Snape?! But you only saw him a few times throughout the film! ARG!
And the ending was so cheesy! Yes, lets watch the phenix soar into the sunset! Whoohoo! *sigh*

The more I think about it, the more I realize they left out a lot. But I still think it was good, and I’m sure I’ll see it a lot more in theaters. I think a lot of people will agree that it’s the best HP movie to far. And it’s not just HP movies that leave out stuff, ALL books-made-into-movies do. I finally was forced into watching Inkheart because I knew they would leave out so much stuff. And at least the acting is good in HP. The actors in Inkheart (except Eleanor) STUNK.
Why am I talking about Inkheart on the HP thread? *headdesk*

There.
I was partly disappointed with some relationship stuff.
First of all, Fleur was nowhere to be seen! I mean, come on, she’s marrying Bill at the beginning of the next book! I missed Ginny calling her phlegm. Also, the first time Ginny and Harry kiss is when they are under the mistletoe, not when hiding the potions book!
I also missed the whole stalking Malfoy thing, too.
Ehem. The first time Harry and Cho kiss is under the mistletoe. The first time Harry and Ginny kiss is after the Quidditch game.
Oops! Sorry. I meant that, but messed up.
This seems like a good time to mention the Muse/”Half-Blood Prince” fanfiction (Part One and Part Two) that appeared on the blog just after the book came out. I never got around to writing Part Three, but some MBers continued the story for a while.
Fleur Delacour meets Feather in Part Two. Among other things, she mentions that she knows Ginny calls her names behind her back. Yes, it does bother her.

I mean, really. Bellatrix ruining the great hall? The burrow burning down? Bellatrix wouldn’t even do that, it’s totally out of her character. That would be something the stupid Death Eaters would do. She would just be like “hey, sup, blood traitors I’ll kill you all mwahahaha” and set it on fire. With people in it. Only an idiot would lead the important people outside.
Luna did not do the match. Luna did not do the match. LUNA DID N OT DO THE MATCH. Death occurs now.

Sorry GAPA’s!!!! Just realized that I forgot to put a spoiler warning in. *Hits self over the head several times. Thinks, gosh, I feel like a house elf now!!!!*
soccer starr: I feel like a house elf, too. When I tried to add a spoiler warning to your post, I wound up deleting the whole post by mistake. I’m afraid you’ll have to re-post your review. GAPA must throw himself from the highest tower of Hogwarts. Sorry, sorry, sorry!

I’ll try to remember the gist of soccer starr’s review. She said that she saw the movie and enjoyed it a lot. Most of the changes worked well. The burning of the Burrow was bad, but she didn’t mind the omission of the battle at the end. She was surprised and pleased to find that the movie had so much humor, which helped to relieve the gathering gloom. (By contrast, the previous movie was just gloomy.)
How did I do, s.s.?

The thing that they left out that I wanted the most (and I don’t think anyones mentioned this) is the part where Dumbledore visits the Dursleys! That part was amazing! They should have had it! WHY? NOT?
THIS IS A MEDIUM SPOILER WARNING. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, PLEASE DON’T READ THIS UNLESS YOU LIKE HAVING BOOKS SPOILED FOR YOU.

I just saw it. It was really good! It’s too bad they left out the big battle at the end, but the movie actually works much better without it. Dumbledore’s death scene was well done (by which I mean it made me cry).
They did a much better job on this one than some of the others–it’s the best so far. They’ve managed to get nearly everything set up for the seventh and eighth movies, which is good.

Yay! I remembered to put in the warning this time, GAPAs!!!
86.1-I don’t remember Dobby appearing in the movie anywhere, which was a bit of a disappointment because he’s one of my favorite characters.
86-I agree with you. I think that they generally did do a good job plot-wise when they chose which parts to cut/include, setting up a very good picture for the remaining movies. I almost cried when Dumbledore died, but I did manage to control myself in the end.
I forgot to mention before, but I also liked how they showed Malfoy testing the Vanishing Cabinet, which you never get to read about in the book because of the limited point of view.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Wasn’t Harry supposed to disarm malfoy at some point? Deathly Hallow’s plot needed malfoy to be disarmed by harry for it to work. Also, Dumbledore’s hand was not shown enough. You needed to be paying close attention to notice much shriveling and discoloration.
They completely cut out the Weasley being bad at quidditch bit. that was annoying. Also, it seemed interesting how the Felix felices worked somewhat as a PLACEBO. hmm.
HARRY POTTER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I didn’t think of Harry disarming Malfoy, but now that you’ve mentioned it I realize that you’re right. Harry having Malfoy’s wand becomes vital in the seventh book, and no doubt they’ll have to include it (or some form of it) in the movie/s.
Also, I didn’t even notice Dumbledore’s shriveled hand at all. Unless you’ve read the book, it’s not an obvious part of the movie.
Finally, I think that although Ron being bad at Quidditch would have made the story line more interesting, I think that the way it worked was fine enough. They probably just couldn’t find an extra slot to fill it in with, and there were more important parts to focus on.

Oops! I meant Lavender Brown, not Luna! Gaaah, sorry!
Heh heh, I was playing the game today. At one point, you have to make a potion for Ginny to lessen her workload, so she can go to Hogwarts. Harry makes the potion and gives it to her, and asks if she’s ready to go. She says she’s actually going with Dean – and there is literally a record scratch sound.
Ooh. Fail. Is the game good?
I just lost the game!
I don’t really regret to inform you that you have just lost teh game.
And it’s pretty good. Dueling and Potions-making are really fun since there’s quite a few things to keep track of (even more fun with the Wii remote), but Quidditch is awful.
I really have to get the game soon!! I’ve heard from a few people that it’s really fun.
It really is! There’s only a few complaints I have:
-cutscene and conversation (close-up, in other words) graphics and animation are actually a step or two down from OOTP
-there are things called crests to collect instead of discoveries, and occasionally you will see one on the wall that takes 10 throws of a bench to knock it down
-my Wiimote spazed out while I was playing today. It was probably a temporary thing, but it made playing annoying
-again, Quidditch is awful. You just fly through rings that are easy to see and are given several seconds to position yourself. The Wii version is even easier and worse, as you just have to point at the screen
-occasional repetition
Now, good things:
-it’s fun to collect mini-crests to make ordinary crests
-I haven’t tried this yet, but there is two-player dueling, and you can unlock more characters by collecting crests (Luna and Malfoy, e.g)
-Dueling is fun with actual health bars, barriers for protection, and the ability to dodge
-Potions is really fun, especially trying to master quick brewing
If you do get it, get the Wii version
I have a Wii, so I definitely will get that version if I end up getting it. Thanks for the info.
A detailed breakdown of the movie:
WARNING! Spoilers will abound.
Favorite Actors:
Didn’t-get-any-good-lines Malfoy
Wasn’t-as-important-as-he-was-in-the-book Slughorn
Didn’t-get-enough-screen-time Boy Voldemort (I didn’t like the actor for the teenage Voldemort as much)
Least Favorite Actors:
HP/DR (I mean, he didn’t even have any expression. And he waddled when he walked.
RW/RG (He was worst when he drank the love potion-I mean, it was so unrealistic)
Snape (He seemed like he was just done with the movies)
Best Scenes:
Memory at the Orphanage
Fire in the Cave
Ummm… I can’t think of any others I liked.
Worst Scenes:
Burning of the Burrow (Although, as my dad remarked to me, they needed to find a way to show how much damage Death Eater attacks were doing without having Harry reading a newspaper article every 10 minutes)
Spinner’s End/SKD at the Astronomy Tower (Snape didn’t act evil at all! Plus, Dumbledore’s “Severus…please…” line didn’t even sound like pleading!)
Ron’s Love Potion (See my notes on RG’s acting)
Bridge Action Sequence (‘Nough said)
Extra Notes:
Harry and Ginny’s romance scenes were totally misrepresented. Also, I wished there could have been more than 2 memories, especially since Dumbledore says in the movie, “Voldemort’s Horcruxes could be anything,” something he EXPLICITLY denies in the book. Oh, and Jadestone, you were wrong. It was actually Harry Potter and the FIVE Mentions of the Half-Blood Prince. I counted.
Overall Consensus:
The movie had no discernible plot. It had no clear beginning middle, or end. It was basically just scenes from the book. They could have made the plot, “What is Draco up to?” or “Who is the Half-Blood Prince?” They did neither, and so made a jumbled mess of a movie. WHY CAN’T ALFONSO CUARÓN KEEP DIRECTING THE MOVIES?????
And that is my HBP review. Thank you for reading.
HBP Review
Favorite Actors:
Ginny Weasley/Bonnie Wright
Hermione Granger/Emma Watson
Harry Potter/Daniel Radcliffe
Not-so-great Actors:
Ron/Rupert Grint
Lavender Brown/Jessie Cave (“Ugly” pops into my head every time I see her, and Lavender seemed over-obsessed with Ron, even more so than the book)
Remus Lupin/David Thewlis
Best Scenes:
-Harry arriving at the Burrow
-Gred and Forge’s joke shop (I know they’re really Fred and George, but I couldn’t resist throw that little SS joke in)
-Quidditch scenes
-the orphanage memory and the real Horcrux memory
-all of the HarryXGinny scenes
-the cave
Bad Scenes:
-burning of the Burrow (heck, the whole Burrow at Christmas scene was bad in general)
-Intro scene with the bridge
-Sectumsempra scene in the restroom
-the astronomy tower scene (Malfoy and Snape did some good acting, but the scene in general was bad)
Plot: B
Tone: A+
Acting: A
Music: A
Overall: A+
I think this is my overall rating:
Plot: F (since it didn’t exist)
Tone: A
Acting: D (for Daniel )
Music: B (the music itself wasn’t bad, it just seemed out of place in the movie; for example, after SKD and everyone’s acting all solemn, the credits music is really happy-go-lucky)
Overall: C-
The thing is – you can’t just say it had no plot. That implies that no scene had any connection whatsoever with any other scene. If you don’t think there was a plot, you just didn’t see it.
Yes, you’re right- some scenes had connections with others. Most of the movie, however (in my opinion), was just a disconnected mess of images from the book.
I think you’re being a little hard on Jessie Cave! I don’t think she’s so terribly awful looking, and Lavender didn’t seem any *more* obsessed in the movie… I might even go so far and say she seemed more natural, or maybe realistic in the movie.
Of course, now that I think of it, it’s possible I’m just remembering the book wrongly. Which is a bad thing to happen, I must re-read it soon.
I pretty much agree with the rest. The bridge scene was cool, but it belonged in different movie.
Plot: C-
Tone: B- (They lightened it up too much!)
Acting: A+ (For what the script was worth)
Music: A- (The only movies that get A+’s are movies that are classics, or Star Trek Movies)
Overall: B+
I just got the soundtrack for the movie! I’m listening to it right now!
Nicholas Hooper is now up there with Hans Zimmer in my mind. I loved that soundtrack so much. It was one of my favorite parts of the movie.
Well, when I saw the movie, I started crying in the first few minutes, the first time we saw Dumbledore, because I knew what was going to happen to him and it was terrible.
And then I cried when Dumbledore fell. I was like quietly sobbing in the theatre. It was so sad. I felt devastated. Even though I’d read the book. (<- I cried during the book too, every time I read it. I think the Harry Potter series makes me cry the most. I get very attached.)
I was pissed when there was no battle. I was so looking forward to that.
And I was ecstatic when Bellatrix showed up. I adore that woman (Bella, not the actress), I honestly do. She’s so… EVIL. It’s so amazing how she mocks everyone, she’s like a cat and all the world is a mouse! I love Bellatrix so much.
Every time I see “HBP” I think “No, that’s supposed to be HPB – hot pink bunny” and then I remember that it’s referring to harry potter, not the museblog. *whacks self in head*
I thought Rupert was a wonderful actor, really filled the part well I thought. To those of you who disapprove of the love potion scene – it’s SUPPOSED to be unreal! He’s just fallen head of heels for someone he doesn’t even know! That’s exactly what a love potion is supposed to do to you. I thought he did great. And it was really funny.
Daniel was pretty good though more towards the “just okay” side of the scale. Emma Watson was charming (and gorgeous) as ever. The chick who play Ginny is just okay, but I can’t see her as good looking, I really can’t.
Tom Felton was cute as ever. But maybe he looked better in the last movie… hmmm, must go watch the fifth again.
I had no qualms with any of the actors’ hair this time. Just the right length, first time since the 3rd movie. FINALLY.
The guy who plays Snape has done a better job than this – the third movie was the best with him.
I miss Sirius.
WHAT??? Helena Bonham Carter rocks!
I think she’s saying that she doesn’t hate the actor – she just likes Bellatrix more.
I can’t see the girl who plays Ginny as good looking either, so I know exactly what you mean.
I don’t want to see it. I’m a complete Harry Potter fan – as in, raving-lunatic-who-will-beat-you-over-the-head-for-not-reading-it sort of obsessed. I don’t mind if someone doesn’t like it, but “I didn’t want to read it ’cause it’s so long” just doesn’t fly with me. And I have not seen the fourth, fifth, or sixth movies. I was SO mad at the third movie, I walked out of the theater nearly shouting (Harry Potter is the only movie I’ve ever gone to see in theaters). I simply refuse to see the others. I admit, some parts (the ones that are true to the book), I’ve seen them, and they’re good, but as a whole I found the movies lacking.
I think I shall stop ranting and go away now.
I’m a complete Harry Potter fan and I loved this one, as well as the last two (GoF not as much, though).
Although I do agree with you, the third was junk.
Do you think it’s worth the money? Because if a lot of people tell me that it was good, I’d consider buying the DVD. I got such mixed reviews for the last two, with the majority leaning to mediocre/plain terrible, I decided not to waste the money. Should I? Maybe I’ll just borrow it from someone.
I’ve had such problems. It’s like how I can’t eat any eggplant Parmesan that smells a certain way, because one time I got the flu and threw up just after I’d eaten some eggplant. It’s sad, ’cause I love eggplant. I just cannot bring myself to put it in my mouth.
Random, I know, but that is exactly what watching Harry Potter feels like now. And that’s even worse than not being able to eat eggplant.
SFTNP
No, it’s absolutely not worth the money, and if it’s not too late: I recommend you skip it, or check it out fromt he library or something when it becomes available. It is by far the worst of the 6 movies so far (spoken by a madly obsessed Potter fan, if that gives my words any weight).
Just a random point: .
Ha ha. No, really what I wanted to say was that I absolutely LOVE evil characters. Not just ‘bad guys’ but the truly evil people. Like Bellatrix Lestrange or Dr. Loveless from The Wild Wild West . The ones who are so twisted and complex. Bella is evil, but it’s not “Ha ha, I shall rule the world!” She’s completely devoted to Voldemort. She’s loyal, and that’s a very odd thing to find in a ‘bad guy.’ Wahoo for her!
Really?!
Don’t even get me started on the third movie!!! It was TERRIBLE, and completely lacked the feel that made the first two movies good. I know that it was a different director and therefore the movie was bound to have differences from the previous ones, but SERIOUSLY, it was downright horrible. It’s the only Harry Potter movie that I’ve never watched twice. (Well, I haven’t seen the sixth movie twice, but once I get the DVD, I’m sure I’ll watch it multiple times.)
I saw the movie three times, which got to be a little too much when I saw it the last time.
I really like the Malfoy scenes. Tom Felton did good in the last scene with Dumbledore, with the almost lowering the wand thing, but then the rest of the Death Eaters arrive. Whenever I read the book at this part, I read it with a feeling of dread, because I know what’s going to happen, but sometimes I think that if I just concentrate hard enough, I can change what happens, and then I have to read the part where he falls five times, because I don’t believe it.
I really wish that they would have had the fight at the end. I always love the fight scenes in the book, because they’re really vivid to me, and I feel as though I could be there.
There were some slow parts that seemed disconnected in the movie, though not so in the book, but I suppose that’s because J.K. Rowling can write a 652 page book and people will still read it, because it’s Harry Potter, but the director can’t have the films too long because people who didn’t read the books wouldn’t see all the connections made in the book.
muselover: Your dad has a point about the Death Eaters causing destruction in a non-newspaper format.
The special effects were awesome, though I thought they could have used more of them. The Death Eater scene at the beginning was great, even though the bridge twisting so much was stretching reality a bit much for me.
I forgot that the Horcrux was a fake.
Overall: Pretty Darn Good.
Is It?!
Should’ve known we had a thread devoted to bashing the horribleness that was HBP the movie……And here I was going on about it on other threads (but at least they were threads that it was rather on-topic on )
Anyway…..just barely looking at this thread is reviving my intense hatred of the movie, and if I don’t want to break something right this second, I should probably leave it for the moment.
i liked the movie. the 5th was my least fave
Please use correct grammar.
(The grammar was correct. It was the capitalization and punctuation that were incorrect.)
Why does everyone hate the movie? At least it wasn’t as bad as PoA or OotP.
But you have to admit his hair was best in PoA.
I liked his hair in the fourth one the best.
Oooo, yesss, he was a beastly little muffin in the 4th one. All of the boys were.
POA PWNED! HOW COULD YOU GUYS SAY SUCH A THING? IT WAS THE BEST HP MOVIE! OK, I guess everyone has their own interests…
I don’t quite remember why I hate it (that’s how long it’s been since I saw it), but I think it was something to do with the biggest plot inconsistencies. Not to mention just about everyone except for Harry, Hermione, and Dumbledore looking kind of ugly-ish.
Personally, I thought it was worse that both of those. My ranking (worst, to best):
HBP
OotP
PoA/GoF
GoF/PoA
PS and CoS (pretty equal)
Mainly, I didn’t like how they turned it into a romance, with every other word/scene having some sort of romantic undertone. That’s not how the book was. That, minor changes to the story, and the serious plot diversion with the Horcruxes. I don’t even want to think how Yates is going to try and salvage that. Oh, wait, he probably won’t. The 7th will just deviate even more……Great. (sarcasm)
I actually thought that the movie had less romance than the book, but the movie still managed to not have much else.
i liked it like that but that’s just me .. i liked the 7th book a lot. but the movie will prbly be annoying
SPOILER SPOILER HALF-BLOOD PRINCE MOVIE SPOILER.
The movie had a lot more hinting at RonxHermione, I think. I guess they’re trying to smooth it out so it won’t come as a total shock when they kiss in DH.
Also, the locket looked different than I imagined.
And they totally messed up the scene where Dumbledore dies. Harry’s supposed to be frozen under the Invisibility Cloak, not in some random room below the whole scene!
Oh, and they left out Dumbledore’s funeral! Now what are they going to compare Dobby’s burial to?
Well, it would be hard to compare Dobby’s funeral to anything, seeing as how it’s supposed to be all somber and whatnot, and therefore quiet. They could just leave that one thought out with very little harm done. However, the absence of the funeral from the 6th movie is inexcusable. As is moving Harry from his staircase. (Cue rant)
No, I haven’t seen it, and now I really don’t want to.
Hey, does anybody know when the DVD of HBP comes out? because my Grandma sent me the first 5 movies together and the second one by iteself and I am going to exhange it fir the 6th one *is happy about actually getting/seeing Potter movies in a reasonable amount of time for once.
I wish JK Rowling would have started the Harry Potter series a few years later than she did, because then I would be able to more “actively participate”. I feel somewhat shortchanged because I didn’t start reading HP until I was in 4th grade (I used to be very afraid of “scary books”) and I never had a chance to stay up till midnight waiting, or partake in the craziness of 2007 or go to any of the movies (except hbp) in theatres or be as obsessed as I could have been. I have gone through some seriousish PPD (post-Potter deppresion) after I read the 7th book about how it was all over and I never got to be a part of any of it. *fumes*
Oh well. Any Idea about when they will make the split in the DH movie? I think a good place would be after the graveyard but before Bathilda’s house, but I read that it was going to be between the snatchers and going to the Malfoy manor.
Er, December, not sure the exact date, I forget, but December. No, wait, I’ll go look it up. Give me a second…..It’s coming out December 8th, as are “ultimate editions” of HP1&2…
As for the timeline of HP…Although I sympathize, I myself am quite happy with when the HP phenomenon started, as it allowed me to be young enough to get involved with it early on, when it was still very new, as opposed to being an “old” latecomer to the series, once it became a hit and adults realized it was good stuff for them, too. I was….eight, maybe nine, when I became introduced to the series, a year or so after the first book was released in the US. I myself wish I had become a pottermaniac a bit sooner, so that i could’ve gone to more than just 2 release parties. Well, three if you count the lame Beedle the Bard party that the campus bookstore had. i don’t, really, all it consisted of was them reading the entire (minus one story) book to us before they were even have supposed to open the boxes.
I have no clue where they’ll split the DH movie, though. I imagine wherever they do, it will be in the most stupidest spot possible, and will only serve to make the movie even worse than I already know it is going to be. How do I know this, you ask? Look at the director. then hop over and look at the director of the 2 worst HP movies in history, numbers 5&6. That’s right. They’re the same guy, the guy who butchered any hope potter fans had of the movies ever regaining any bit of goodness. The path he took with the Horcruxes sealed it, even if all his other alterations are ignored.
I feel the exact same way! I only got to go to one release party (the 7th book) because that was the only book left by the time I was a fan. The whole series was a bit old for me, I mean I first started reading in 4th grade I think and immediately fell in love with it but because it was already starting to lose a little steam at that point I didn’t have many people to share it with. Oh well, I’m sure there will be new series, like Percy Jackson, that are definitely gaining momentum and I’m at the right age for it to enjoy all of the movies and things like that.
Same for me! I only was able to go to the 7th book’s midnight party, but I’m just happy that I could go to any! When did those parties start to get popular? 4th, 5th?
I think it was around the 5th one.
Interestingly enough, I went to parties for the 6th and 7th, but I didn’t actually get a book at the party for the 6th :P.
I didn’t get the book at the 7th one either…I just went for a little while to see what it was like. I don’t even think I had finished the 6th book at that point!
Not. Finished. Sixth. Book. Yet. I’d read it at least two times, but more like three, I think: US twice, UK once.
No, no. I’ve read it now multiple times, it’s just that then, when the 7th book came out, I hadn’t quite finished yet because I had just started the series a few months before and was desperately trying to finish it before the 7th one came out, but I think I can remember not quite making it. You can relax.
Uh, yeah, I know….I got that you meant that you hadn’t finished it when the 7th came out, not that you hadn’t finished it yet, now. As I said, I’d read it three times by then, but….If you’d only started the series shortly before, I can see why there might have been a bit of difficulty there.
*sigh* At least you didn’t get carried away on a rant and manage to basically tell your sister everything that happened in book seven, by screaming at the top of your lungs during the rant that all your theories were proved correct. whoops. Guilty as charged.
I think they had release parties as early as the fourth, but I”m not sure. I didn’t become a fanatic until shortly after OotP, so I could be wrong.
I went to parties for 6 & 7, too, and was much closer than I like to think about to not getting a book at the 6th one. When it was released, we were on vacation visiting my grandma in FL, and had a 7 day pass to Disney World. Of course, my grandma lives a fairly decent drive from there (well over an hour), and my mom wasn’t sure if it would work out to get me to a release party AND get me a book there (after all, you ahd to preorder). However, they did have me a book on order to be delivered to my grandma’s Monday morning, but then July 15, the day of the midnight parties on the drive to Orlando (we were going to ANimal Kingdom that day), my mom informed me (in the hopes of getting me and my sister to stop our bickering), that I was going to an HP party that night AND was going to get to get a book there, and not ahve to wait. So, needless to say, i was incredibly happy, but…..It did absolutely nothing for my sister and mine’s fighting. Between the heat and the cramped quarters (little car, me, my sis, and my grandma all crammed into the back seat together), neither of us were in a very agreeable mood, and, well, the fighting continued. All. Day. Long. XD
I went to a party for the sixth for maybe an hour, then ended up getting the book a week later. I got the seventh book at midnight. ^^
I did not even get to go to the 7th one seeing as I was on vacation and My parents didn’t think I should have. So I ended up buying the book at Wal-mart of all places around three in the afternoon. and was finished by 8 the next morning. I dragged it to the fair and read it there so it has cotton candy on a few of the pages, and greasy fingerprints on the cover from eating cheese curds. I like cheese curds. I wonder If cheese curds in the wizarding world would bounce? (in a good way. School sausages bounce too, but in a very unnnapetizing manner).
This thread! Is alive! even though I wasn’t trying to awaken it!
Post on anything related to HP or post anywhere about HP, and the resident pottermaniac comes running. And babbling. On and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on. And nothing you do can possibly make her shut up. She even manages to way lay non-HP threads and somehow turn them into discussion of HP related topics. Trust me on this. She and I are very intimately connected, seeing as we’re the same person…..
You’re worse than I am! And my friends can tell you how hard that is. (Of course, I’ve known this for a while, I’m just commenting on it now. Lazy me) Everything has some bit of Potterness in it, to my obsessed eyes.
Do you read fanfiction?
I try, luv, I try. No, wait, that’s not true. I don’t try–it’s a natural talent. But, yes, I can see connections and parallels to Harry Potter in everything. Even just the way a sentence gets phrased, it sometimes forcibly reminds me of a sentence or event in the series…..
yes, I’ve been known to read fanfiction upon occasion. The best (and definitely longest) I’ve read was probably Cassandra Clare’s Draco Trilogy, but she’s removed ’em all from the net, I think because she decided to actually write a book of her own…..of course, i’ve got ’em all on my computer.
Actually, I’ve even been known to write a wee bit, although the two i started never got complete, the first one i started, I actually posted some of on the ‘blog (don’t read it, it really, really, really is very horrible, indeed, especially given everything that I know now, and that I knew when i started my other one). The second one I started, I think I got about two pages into, before, well, probably before I finished that year of school, and thus it was summer time and I no longer had need of a procrastination technique, so therefore I had no reason to continue writing it. It had much, much better potential, as it was so much more canon, even down to Snape being in love with Lily. it was started post HBP, but ignored the entirety of it, as though that book was never written.
But, yeah, the second I might (but probably not) return to one day, the first I highly doubt I ever will. It’s too…..*shudder*
I just saw HBP last night at a 4 Quarters 4 Kinds fundraiser at school, and it’s still my favorite one by far. I know, I know – there are some pretty big plot holes. However, that happens a lot with Hollywood and fantasy/sci-fi/adventure books, so I was kind of expecting it.
So besides the plot, my biggest complaint is that Lavender Brown just looks like an ugly witch
Haha, it’s so ironic the spambots would revive this thread now…
Very, very ironic.
TOO IRONIC IT’S A TRAP.
