4- I heard that. Definitely whacked. They could use the excess lottery money for something much more useful.

It was pretty much given that the Dems would take the house….they and the GOP will be pretty close for the Senate…

Republicans weren’t very popular at the time of this election. Santorum/Casey was close; Casey won by only a few hundred votes….

w00t….now we get to hear about Democrat screw-ups for a change xD *laughs at Kerry*

I’m pretty glad that Rumsfeld’s out.

    Speaking of political ads:
(This came from Marketplace, the public radio show.)

NICE LADY: I’m a Mom, and I’m voting “yes” on Prop. 111. Prop. 111 provides free candy for every child in our state.

    KID: I heart candy!

NICE LADY: And the candy won’t hurt their teeth, because Prop. 111 will fund the development of a high-tech polymer that protects kids’ teeth from decay. The polymer also makes kids 200 percent smarter and wealthier, and it makes them hate illegal drugs. And Prop. 111 does all this without raising taxes, by floating a series of magic astrological wizard bonds that incur zero debt while generating billions of dollars in revenue. If you believe in unicorns, vote yes on Prop. 111.

FAST MALE VOICE: Paid for by Citizens for Realism in Voting.

SCARY VOICE: Supporters of Prop. 111 say it gives candy to children. But thanks to special-interest loopholes, Prop. 111 will actually seal children in wooden barrels and roll them off the tops of skyscrapers.

    KID: Help meeeeeeeeeeee!

SCARY VOICE: The plummeting child-stuffed barrels will destroy our roads — 10 percent of state revenue will go towards repaving the streets and burying the dead. And Prop. 111 has provisions for 900 new taxes, including one on the air you breathe. Prop. 111 was crafted in a cave full of vampire bats by demons with wings of fire. It hates you. If you are a human being, vote NO on 111.

FAST MALE VOICE: Paid for by Voters United Against Fearmongering.

The whole steel puppies thing was because Steel, a republican (didn’t win) did this commercial where he said that his opponents were saying things like steel hates puppies. Then his opponents group came right back with “Steel likes puppies, but he loves George Bush” Very cheesy, but it worked. Even the “these are my kids dissing my frank sonatra commercial” couldn’t save him from the reality that he almost always sided with the president, who is not very popular right now, as if anybody hadn’t noticed. Funny, though.

  27. The Skipper Nancy says:

(all the replys to my post in 4) Yes, well the point is to increase voter turn out. Because, if you look at the statistics, it’s incredible how many people buy lottery tickets, even though they probably are more likely to be swallowed by a whale than win. So if people that carzy about lottery tickets, than it’s a very big incentive to vote. But that’s not necesarily a good thing. I mean, should we really reward people for doing something they should do in the first place? Also, it may people vote randomly, just for the sake of having a chance at a million bucks, rather than actually for democracy’s sake. That’s my view of things. I don’t really think the million dollars part affects much. Nowadyas a million bucks isn’t that much for government to fork over.

    (12) Hahahahaha.

I looked up election results today during free period. I was so suprised that the democrats (nearly) took the Senate! I had expected them to take the House, but not the Senate. It made me happy.
And I was shocked at Rumsfeld’s resignation. Not sure why, but it really suprised me. I was glad though.

Stupid Arizona made English it’s official language!!! GAH!!!! I was so angry! I mean, hello. We’ve got a huge percentage of Mexicans who don’t speak English. Making it the official language won’t help them, and it won’t help us either. It will just put more cultural strain on things. Grr.

    27) I don’t live in Arizona, but I do live in Utah, and we have many Hispanics here too. But I don’t want to learn Spanish. If the Hispanics want to come to America, then the least they should do is learn the national language. I mean, if a bunch of Americans were to go illegally into Mexico, and refuse to learn their language, they would probably just kill them. And if they went in legally, they would be really confused and people would think they were illegal. And kill them.

Second of all, I’m not saying Mexicans shouldn’t learn English when they come to the US. They should, if they want to be able to get jobs and such. But I don’t think it should be made official. That requires laws which put a strain on those who don’t learn English and makes it even more difficult for immigrants.

    (38) OK, thrash me verbally. I still think I’m right. I wasn’t saying he wasn’t brave or good or all that. But every time some one wants to support Kerry, they just drag in those Purple Hearts. I mean, if you go to war, it’s pretty likely that you’ll be injured. He deserves recognition for it, because it was a noble sacrifice, but it wasn’t anything super extra ordinary. And him being a war hero has absolutely nothing do with his politcal status. It’s not a reason to think he’d be a good leader.
To tell the truth, I don’t have that much against Kerry, but I just objected to you saying that because he got some Purple Hearts, that some how justified him being a good leader. I’m sorry, but great leaders don’t bungle bad jokes as badly as he just did. He may be a lot better than Bush, but you got to admit… he did just shoot himself in the foot…

Hopefully he’ll recover from the extremity wound, it’s starting to blow over. FS- because switzerland is such a peaceful country, have you ever known anybody who served in a war? who are you to say who is or is not a hero? My grandfather served in WWII, and I think he did what was right, however, that doesn’t mean that he did not assist in causing the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of people (navigator on a plane that dropped bombs) I think the real heroes are people who can right the world withought violence; though this might not always be an option.

39: He put his life at great risk many times to save other soldiers. Then the republicans came along and totally shat all over his war record. They made fun of purple hearts and degraded his heroism. It’s even more disgusting knowing that Dubya himself went AWOL from the national guard.

40: I know many people who were in a war. Lots of germans who moved here after the war, also a few concentration camp survivors. And heroism can be defined by various parameters. John Kerry is a WAR hero, not a peace hero. He was heroic in a WAR. An unnecessary and horrible war that was started for political and financial reasons.

Ok people, not to sound dismissive or anything but practically everybody who goes into war is a war hero. seriously, war is where heroic things happen. they train (/brainwash) these people to stick together and protect their friends and everything and so that’s what they do. and it usually ends up being heroic because they’re being shot at at the time. i respect war heroes immensely, but there sure are a lot of them.

  46. The Skipper Nancy says:

    (41) Yes, OK, true. But do see my point? These reason I made the comment about him not being a war hero was because I objected to your logic. You were implying that because he went to war he was some kind of great leader. Lots of people went to war and they all deserve recognition for it (I think Ebeth put it a lot better than I did), but saying John Kerry is awesome just cause he went to war…well, the point is, it says nothing about him a political leader. It’s weird how the media in the US is incredibly anti-smoking, but we are behind Europe on smoking ban laws. Smoking seems to be a less big deal in Europe (as in, it’s not as frowned upon) but they have more, stronger laws opposing it.
…I just realized that was a lot of conjecture based on what I think is true. I haven’t been to Europe in a long time, so I’m not so sure…

{place where I live} had 2 anti-smoking laws in this election. One was a real anti-smoking law, the other was a less harsh one put up by the tobacco companies to try and keep people from voting for the harsh one. I’m not sure which one passed.

I really want to move to Canada, for numerous reasons…*sigh* I cannot wait until I graduate.

this is mean, but it seems logical that in ww2 they didnt like jews. (they didnt fight hitler) pacifism is good 99% of the time, but in ww2, it was bad. at the end of the war, switzerland made huge sums of money because dead people had $ in ther bank accounts. i think this is true. they should ahve done what dfenmark did. best resistanse in the world, helped allmost all danish jews to safety.
oh wait… that was very political. but, its a sorta politics thread, so ima leave it.

70 – Before you decide to permanently pop across the pond, wait till it rains and stand in it for a couple of hours. Not that we actually do that for fun, but you’ll need to get used ot it. Many years ago, we used to have interesting things like snow, but now global warming melts it before it descends, so we just get more rain. And grey. We have lots of grey. We spell it with an ‘e’ because English grey is a special sort of grey that you don’t get anywhere else. It’s greyer – sort of velvety, and very soporific provided you’re sitting in front of a log fire toasting crumpets.

We do get long, hot summers now though. Which we complain about, because we’re British. Too dry. We need some rain for the garden. Grass is looking yellow. Water shortages in the South because the water supply companies are incompetent and don’t fix leaks because they don’t need to because we get so much rain. Except in summer, which you’d think they’d realise.

On the other hand, if you like history, weirdness or both, we have those in bucketfuls. And badgers. We have badgers.

73: Dude, if we’d have made any show of resistance, Hitler would have annexed us to the third reich in no time. He were lucky, because he was already scared of our über-awesome military, but he still would have invaded. As it was, many rich swiss people privately bought off many jews from the concentration camps. It isn’t logical that we don’t like jews. Look at Sweden, they traded openly with Germany to avoid being conquered. In fact Finland pwns us all because they resisted the Soviet Union for the entire war. W Mannerheim!

75-i know they would have been invaded, but in what way was Denmark not? the swiss couldve resisted helping them. some rich people bought people off the concentration camps? what about the government? and im not saying that sweden’s good. allthough it is. but i wont defend them. maybe funlands okay. but they speak finnish.which is just wierd. so they lose.

77: Finland pwns. Norway comes second. And we were at greater risk because a) we’re in a strategically important position, we control passage from north of the alps to the south, b) we were surrounded by 4 axis nations, Germany, Austria (annexed to Germany), Italy (fascisti) and France (occupied by German troops). So considering the situation, we did damn well.

I think the swiss were fine during WWII. They did secretly help jews a lot, and didn’t they let them into their country, or am i wrong there? Sure they didn’t fight, they’re not suicidal. They were a lot more help alive.
