The Winter Olympics is the only time my family and I are stuck in front of our TVs for an hour or more. (Besides the tennis tournaments) My favorite sports are snowboarding, speed skating (Go Netherlands!), and figure skating.

I don’t watch the Olympics. I really don’t see the point.

2-It’s sports! Why follow football or any other sport for that matter!

I follow all the skiing though I haven’t had the time to watch it.

2- I suppose there isn’t much of a point, if you put it that way.
It’s more following a wonderful tradition, that stretches all the way back to when Greece was in power. Watching those young men and women who worked so hard to get where they are, getting rewarded for all their hard work.
On a slightly random note only related to the Summer Olympics, my uncle almost went to the Olympics. He was best in this country, I think, but then they changed the categories at the Olympics, or something, and so he couldn’t go after all.

Did anyone watch snow cross? I feel so sorry for Lindsey Jacobellis!

I sort of agree with you Piggy. I don’t really get into any sports specifically, but I love the opening shows and the feelingof camraderie around the world. It feels like everything bad just disappears for two weeks, and all the evil people in the world are too busy watching to be destructive.

  7. Jadestone says:

    Okay now.

I for one love the Olympics. They’re a symbol of international unity for one, but hey are the pinnacle of physical human skills–athletes push themselves to the very limits our bodies can handle, but it’s more than that, too. It’s art–the way you move, the choreography in figure skating, the tricks in the half pipe, you have to be creative as well.

I love watching them. Skiing and hockey are on right now… I’m really looking forward to the US/Canada game for men’s hockey. For woman’s Canada is pretty much guaranteed the gold.

At least at my high school, everyone seems united cheering for Team USA curling. The TV’s are on during lunch, so we can watch the exciting sport of curling. It feels like bad things have gone away from the TV for two weeks. It’s nice.

O.o My school is obsessed with curling too! I think our Spanish teacher started it, but it is so odd. Do you happen to go to school in Kentucky?

  9. I-Man ((William II, OSW's Secretary)) says:

I think I like the Winter Olympics more than the Summer Olympics. Mostly because I love skiing.

Two things I have to say, though:
    1) There needs to be a Snowball Fight team event.
    2) Last night, for a project for my Video Production 1 class, I recorded a bagel wearing headphones and “watching” a round of the USA-Denmark match of Women’s Curling – for EIGHT AND A HALF MINUTES.

Yeah, I’m not above that :D

I definitely second the snowball fight!!!!!!
Linsey Vonn rules… she won a downhill with a bruised shin. I think she fell on the moguls though.

    • Atan'tsyal says:

Not to sound odd, but I REALLY don’t like Lindsy Vonn. I think she gets a lot of her attention from her looks. She fell in GS, and she missed a gate in Slalom… I like Julia Mancuso much better.

  13. vanillabean3.141 says:

    7–completely agree.

12–And the falls often look horrible too. Poor Jacobellis…

On a lighter note, what does everyone think of Plushenko getting silver? I didn’t watch the whole competition, so I didn’t see his long program. I thought Takahashi was really good.

And of course, Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn, and Apolo Anton Ono are amazing.

*shudder* That luger who crashed into the pole…
Ugh. Sometimes I hate being in a Canadian school. They made us watch the video of him dying. And all anyone talks about is the Olympics.

I don’t watch much of the Olympics. But I like the skating. We watched the 5k skating competition between Norway and America. The Norwegian guy won by, like, a mile.

I don’t really closely follow the Olympics, but like Jade said, I do like them. If I have a chance I turn them on and see what’s going on – I like figure skating, skiing, and snowboarding.

Does anyone else like short track speed-skating? It’s my favorite Winter Olympics sport. It’s so exciting, especially the finish of the race where Apolo “Oh-no” got silver when the Koreans crashed. I was rooting for Korea, though. They were going to sweep the podium. I like Lee Ho-Suk.

  18. starr says:

17 ~ That was really cool! I really like watching short track skating, it’s such an intense sport.

Also, I’m probably missing something (As usual) but what is the name of the sport where four snowboarders all go at once and it seems like it’s almost a race? Is it just called “snowboarding” or “group snowboarding” or something really obvious or is there another name for it? Just wondering.

Unlike some other MBers I do enjoy the Olympics like I said before, but then again, as most if not all of you know – I like sports in general and play them pretty much year round. So I dunno, the Olympics are just really special to me in that sense. (Although obviously it’s not like I’ll ever be in them, I just think they’re cool.)

I LOVE the Olympics. There’s always something to have on in the background of everything… And I’m obsessed with curling. I can follow it, and it lasts a long time. I got my family hooked too (at first they made fun of it…), which is kind of annoying. Yeah, that’s pretty much what I have to say about the Olympics.

I was in China while the Olympics were on (I know, they’re still on now, but still) and they (CCTV) would only ever show the sports that China was competing in…usually. Anyway, there’s only a few that China are actually good at, one of which is curling. Every time we turned on the TV it was showing China against another country in curling. It got pretty boring after a while. I really like watching the skiing (I suppose because I ski myself), and the ladies’ downhill skiing they actually showed. Since there were no Asian countries participating in that event, I cheered for whoever was fastest. It was really exciting when no one could beat Lindsey Vonn’s time, and I’m happy she won. It’s a shame she fell during the moguls, though. It’s always a shame when something like that happens.

Anyway, did anyone watch Wang Meng in the speed skating? That was China’s second gold medal, I think, and she was really fast. Their first was in the pair figure skating…I didn’t watch that unfortunately.

What was the final score? (I mean, I probably will go look it up right now and then I won’t have to ask but still…oh, never mind.) I watched up until they were tied 2-2. It was a fun game to watch, although I was sort of half routing for Canada/half for US because I use to live in Canada so I’ve always sort of been a fan.

I’d love to watch the Olympics, but I’m just so busy. I did manage to see that Canadian skater though that got disqualified for changing lanes. He finished SEVEN WHOLE SECONDS before everyone else. Ya, it was on Good Morning America. (oh, and did I mention that it was his COACH that told him to change lanes?)

I couldn’t watch the closing ceremony. I am very disappointed, to say the least.

And Neil Young… D: I would have loved to see him singing on it, I’m a big fan. Anyone who watch know what songs he did?

Also, US lost to Canada in the final hockey game. Hmm.
