MA’s big annual autumn event is fast approaching, so it’s time to start nailing down some details. Creativity is encouraged, but remember: Muse Academy and all its functions are subject to physical laws and contemporary technology. No antigravity or unlimited sources of free energy, please!

Mikazuki- The Halloween Ball is a Muse Academy event where we all adopt alter-egoes and wear costumes, usually there is (virtual Role-played) dancing and festivities.
Idea- how about we have the theme for this year’s halloween ball somewhat Twilight Zone? Everything’s off by just a tad (The food’s a bit too sweet, the windows too big, the ceiling too short. And of course, folds in the space time continuum around the maze, making it even more confusing that usual.)

Enc, I absolutely love how you write. That line, “Everything’s off by just a tad (The food’s a bit too sweet, the windows too big, the ceiling too short.”… It’s just so… well written? Descriptive? I don’t know how to describe why I like it so much.

Lots of people have said that (in my opinion) my least poetic phrases are well written. One poem type thing that I wrote, I was sqeeing over how I wrote it like it was petering out towards the end, but all anyone commented on were the lines that I liked least.

Some of the staircases could be like that too, completely classic. And the garden should look like it’s being reflected in a sphere.

I vote that we do indeed have a masked ball again.
For those of you who did not participate last year:
A masked ball is sort of like an Alter Ego thread. You change your name and your gravatar and act as someone else–that is, you wear a costume. At the end of the ball we can guess who the other people are.

I think it is very important to stress what is probably the biggest difference between Alter Ego and the Halloween Ball. IT’S NOT A GUESSING GAME. The point is everyone gets to pretend to be who they’re not, and you get to dance with mysterious strangers, while knowing it’s in fact a good friend. Don’t be guessing “I think Shadow Ghost Phantom Super Spy Undead Skeleton is SudoRandom” (Ohnoes, I gave away my costume!) during the ball, because that’s not the point. We all get to guess at the end, and save the rest for dancing.

That would be great, but I think that they should look like normal mirrors, but provide creepy, disturbing images of us instead.

Aah, the highly-anticipated (by me, at least) Halloween Ball! Huzzah!
I like the two inspirations for the theme! I think they can be combined without much difficulty. On the thought of Escher, I have two suggestions. I hope they both make sense! They’re based on a classic optical illusion and a classic Escher design, respectively.
1) Perhaps the windows could be greater in number if one counts the tops of the windows than if one counts the bottoms of the windows.
2) Also, I suggest that the floor be black-and-white tiles that are done in such a way that each row is different, resulting in a pattern that begins as one shape at one wall and then progressively changes into another shape at the wall opposite.
As far as food goes, I would like us to include seasonal fare, such as things made with pumpkins and cranberries. Apples, too, though I’m less fond of them. I also would like spanakopita, scones, some sort of uber-yummy pasta salad, and…I suppose, Puffin Puffs.
Side note: I rather envision the Muse Academy ballroom’s buffet table as holding whatever a person wants. If you approach it wishing for a certain food, you will find it if you look.
I think the soundtrack of the evening should include a variety of genres, with a connecting thread of spookiness. Personally, I think some Queen pieces would be splendid, as well.
I would like to bring up something that has not yet been mentioned:
When should the ball begin and when should it end? I say it should begin on the 13 and end on the 31. I think the thread should then stay open for a few days for people to unmask, as is traditional.
GAPAs, should I decide to send in a picture, which address do you prefer?

And, if the banquet table takes your suggestion, whatever you want can be found, to keep with the slightly off, Twilight zone theme, you can never find what you’re searching for, you always stumble upon something you weren’t expecting.

I have a few ideas, here:
Music: I rather think that some approprietly spooky sound tracks and themes from animes and video games should be included.
Ceiling: What about a Hogwarts-eque ceiling? Only…spooky full moon with a few clouds, occaisonal shadow of witch crossing the moon, etc.
Also, perhaps there should be a skeleton in one corner.

8.2 & 8.3 – How about a music track and a seperate spooky effects track? So the music would be continuous, but at unpredictable times you here spooky effects (wolves howling, evil laughter, screams, groans, growling, etc. etc.) that overlap the music without affecting it? Maybe we could have multiple speakers all over the ballroom so that the spooky effects came from different places each time.

Not for vampires, were-tigers, dragons, were-wolves, cannibals, etc. Meat is not any different, except that these are raw. They eat raw fish in Japan. It’s not barbaric. The Japanese are very delicate and refined. Plus, ‘barbaric’ implies…well, barbarians. These will be expertly prepared and displayed. And what about Puffin Puffs? Those are traditional. This is quite a bit more elegant.

So? Is it really any different than eating animals? And anyway, at least we aren’t killing them. (Well, I’m not.) Animals can communicate too, you know… Who knows, they may be way way way smarter than us, too smart to do what we’re doing to the earth. Yes, I admit that we don’t eat meat raw, but that’s only because it tastes better cooked. (or so I’m told.) Feel free to roast your livers before you eat them. And anyway, who says the Muses are the cannibalistic type? Some Musers might be, but are we all exactly alike? No. And nobody has to eat any of the organs, candy or no. Oh come on, it is too different from eating animals. Yes, some animals are self aware (chimpanzees, for example), it’s true, but (I assume you’re a vegetarian) would you judge me the same for eating a piece of chicken as for eating another human being?

It’s different because cannibalism is not Socially Acceptable.
We grew up being told that cannibalism is wrong, and surrounded by people who eat animals without a qualm. So we have it ingrained within us that eating people is gross, disturbing, and otherwise not acceptable.

Keeping with the Twilight Zone theme, here are ideas for the maze:
It looks, and is, a bit different for everyone. One person’s path to the center could be another’s path straight into a dead end filled with dead bodies.
It’s not a hedge maze, by any means. At least to some people, it would be austere, clinical, cold. Like the walls of a mental insane asylum, whitewashed, lit by flourescent lights. An occasional scribbling, like “O LOOK ANOTHER BRIGHT RED DAY”. To some people, it would look like it an old, decayed building. It looks like it could fall in on you at any moment. And, to some, it would be hot pink. And finally, it could simply be a corn maze. With occasional, unpredictable rustlings
The inside is completely disparate from the outside. Much larger, more complicated, and multilayered, on the inside, with passages going up and down, over and under themselves. But on the outside, it would simply look like a covered corn maze, tinted a bit pink.
In some areas, if you walk straight in one direction… you end up coming out an entrance to where you had been before. The only way through the maze is to turn random directions, not try to win, but simply walk through. Alone. Two people can never find the center together… nor can they leave together.
Another idea:
Exploring the actual ballroom. It would have to have dungeons under the area of festivities. And of course, connecting in exceedinly improbable ways.

Actually, that made me think of something. What if the HPB-themed corn maze had real HPBs to escape from? (In keeping with the Twilight Zone theme, perhaps they could be tinted slightly green.)

Hmm…Activities. Perhaps there could be an area full of creepy trees, crows, jack-o-lanterns, graves, and black cats (This is lit up only by the moon) in which we have a sort of treasure hunt? Perhaps a map, with odd clues? That could lead you to buried treasure? Maybe it would be in a grave? And you could have to do some weird sort of ritual that you would have to figure out in order not to awaken zombies? Maybe?

With our theme, the map would have to be slightly inacurate, the instructions to the ritual missing a step, and we never find exactly what we’re looking for.

Also, the zombies should be well groomed. Groaning, thirsting for brains, but wearing monocles and suits and dresses, and not be slouching.

Maybe something like Clue, where you follow the clues to screens/magic mirrors around the party area where you make a suspicion in light of what you’ve just uncovered by touching the screen/mirror?

30.1.1.1- They only wear very formal-looking glasses, and only if they have trouble seeing. They can wear monacles if they can see well, of if only one eye is weak.
30.2- Maybe we could do both? Perhaps a game of Clue is going on in the same place as the treasure hunt, and it is nearly impossible to tell which one you are part of?

What about minor sound and light effects? Perhaps when you walk in you’re greeted by an eerie howl and a few flashing lights…and when going out to the roof you hear the Tripod Creepy Loud Honkin’ Noise from War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise one).

Okay, it begins tomorrow, right? I believe we have everything in place.
-Decorations-
-Architecture that looks unsound but stands nonetheless, windows next to each other opening up onto completely different vistas and lots of checkerboard tiles on the floor (and ceiling tiles)
-And some of the vistas can even be upside-down and sideways, like in Escher’s “Another World”
-Bird statues. Perhaps alive.
-Some of the staircases are like that too. And the garden looks like its being reflected in a sphere.
-Funhouse mirrors that look like normal mirrors but provide creepy, disturbing images of us instead.
-The windows could be greater in number if one counts the tops of the windows than if one counts the bottoms of the windows
-The floor is black-and-white tiles that are done in such a way that each row is different, resulting in a pattern that begins as one shape at one wall and then progressively changes into another shape at the wall opposite.
-Hogwarts ceiling, only spooky full moon with a few clouds, occasional shadow of witch crossing the moon, etc.
-There’s a skeleton in one corner
-Weeping angels
-When you walk in, you are greeted by an eerie howl and a few flashing lights
-When going out to the roof you hear the Tripod Creepy Loud Honkin’ Noise from War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise one). (See video above)
-Theme- Twilight zone-everything is the littlest bit off, and a bit Escher-esque.
Food- KaiYves has the food list, I believe, with the addition of garlic bread. Everything is slightly off taste.
Music–Music- There is a music track and a separate spooky effects track. So the music is continuous, but at unpredictable times you hear spooky effects (wolves howling, evil laughter, screams, groans, growling, etc. etc.) that overlap the music without affecting it. There are multiple speakers all over the ballroom so that the spooky effects come from different places each time.
