Ugh. Negative exponents. Someone kill me now.

If the exponent is even, negate it. If the exponent is odd, keep it negative. At least, I think that’s how it goes.

    • Tesseract says:

Shadowfire – Nope, sorry. I think you’re thinking of the effect of exponents on negative numbers.

LBK – Basically, you just take the number to the negative exponent and put it on the bottom of a fraction, with a positive exponent.

      2^(-3) = 1/(2^3) = 1/8

      11^(-2) = 1/(11^2) = 1/121

      x^(-n) = 1/(x^n)

      Get it?

Yup, I got it. It’ just that we had problems like this:

        5x^(-3)y^(2) [2xy^(2)]^(-2)
        —————- x ——————
        x^(5)y^(-1) xy

They were trying my patience. But I’ve got it down now. That’s everyone!

*sigh* I need 600 words on why people should read Shakespeare in english class (as foreign language). Usually I’d been full of answers but I need 600 words as in if I only have 500, I’ll get a B (this all stems from my tendency not to do homework and is technically my fault but I’m trying to blame the assignment so shh!). Otherwise I’d do a checklist or something more humorous but I’m kind of stressed lately. And I have latin, french and spanish homework and I need to study for chem, physics and latin and something else that I’m repressing just now and I think I screwed up on math and capoeira starts in less than an hour and after that I need to shower and go to bed and my library books are overdue and oh isn’t this january hustle for good grades so cake-y?

    • Beedle the Bard says:

How about this: Shakespearean language gives an insight to the history of the English language, and knowing the history behind modern English can help students understand it better.
That’s sort of a cake answer, because you shouldn’t confuse students learning modern English with Elizabethan English, but you can use it as a filler.

How about: people would read Shakespere so they can write 600 words on it in English class. If you were particularly verbose, you could probably stretch that to 600 word…
sorry, that was really unhelpful. People should read Shakespere because it’s awesome and has lots of people hiding behind bushes.

  4. bookgirl_me says:

Okay… so I’ve just got to write 63 more words. It’s actually about why to read Shakespeare, but there are deserted islands, it mentions that there are “sword-fights, dramatic deaths and monologues, usually by morally challenged characters with some mental instabilities and violent inclinations.”, that Elizabethan english is grammatically similar to german (with a lot of wishful thinking), and- got it!

It’s one of the few essay topics where the context involves aforementioned overextended deserted island metaphors, a side dig at certain writer and I can basically derail from the topic as much as I want because if there’s anything interesting to say, Shakespeare already included it in one of his plays.

    • Beedle the Bard says:

      OH OH OH
I actually used this like, five times in math today.
You know that the form for a quadratic equation (one that forms a parabola) is ax^2+bx+c, right? The formula for the vertex is
      -b
      ———
      2a
A parabola looks like a giant U, so the axis of symmetry is the line that divides it perfectly in half vertically.
Let me know if you don’t understand that.

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
      • Piggy says:

I believe that’s the equation for the axis of symmetry, Beedle.

The vertex of a parabola is the very highest or the very lowest point–the tip of the U.

To find the X coordinate of the vertex, use the equation x = -b/2a, like Beedle said. Once you know that, plug that number in for x in the original equation in order to find the Y coordinate.

For instance, take the parabola defined by this equation: y = x^2-6x+15. To find the vertex:
1a. x = -b/2a                (equation for the line of symmetry)
        1b. x = -(-6)/2(1)          (plug in a and b.)
        1c. x = 3                        (your X coordinate)
        2a. y = x^2-6x+15       (the original equation)
        2b. y = 3^2-6(3)+15    (plug in the X coordinate)
        2c. y = 6                        (and now you have your Y coordinate)

So your vertex is (x,y)–in this case, (3,6).

Yeah, I forgot where I was going with that halfway through the explanation. My mind is not functioning properly today.

    • Selenium the Quafflebird says:

Or, if it gives you the equation in y = ax^2 + bx + c form, you can use completing the square to find it in vertex form, which will give you (h,k) as the vertex.

      Example:

      y = x^2 + 6x – 3 [standard form]
      y + 3 = x^2 + 6x [add 3 to both sides]
      y + 3 + 9 = (x^2 + 6x + 9) [take half of 6, the ‘b’, and square that number. 1/2 x 6 = 3, 3^2 = 9. Add 9 to both sides.]
      y + 12 = (x+3)(x+3) [factor (x^2 + 6x + 9)]
      y + 12 = (x+3)^2 [rewrite using squared]
      y = (x+3)^2 – 12 [add 12 to both sides]
      ^^ This is your equation in vertex form, y = a(x – h)^2 + k

Now, look at your vertex form equation and find the (h,k).

h = -3 and k = -12, and that is the vertex of your parabola.

Hope this helps, and that it’s not too late.

Thanks, everyone! I think I’m beginning to grasp the concept, and that helped a lot, so yeah, thanks! (I guess I should explain at this point that my homework was to work for an hour on this online math course thing I’m doing; my teacher doesn’t help us at all- which is actually incredibly funny, because you can tell she doesn’t have any idea how to do the problem, but she pretends she does and goes on this explanation, and then you say “actually, we’re not doing that. It’s completely different” and she sort of deflates and says “oh, I think you should get Mrs P’s help with this, girls!” *smile smile* (said teacher I see, what, once every two weeks, and I really don’t feel bad for her since she feels for some reason that’s it’s okay to stick a few hyper seventh graders in a corner and expect them to do a lot of math) , but anyway; back to the point-and no, I had no idea about anything to do with parabola at the point when I was instructed to solve it. I think I got it now, though, although my understanding of things tends to be “I understand but actually, it’s completely different”; however, I got it right, so I’m going with I understood it correctly. :)

I am currently in the procces of working on an 8 to 10 page term paper on the topic of “why writer’s write”, with a focus on writing fiction. As of right now, my current idea is to go through the writing process, ask why on earth a person would want to labor through that process, and then give the reasons that drove various fiction writers to write. My only concern is that I won’t fill up 8 pages. I’m thinking of adding a brief history of (fiction?) writing in the beginning of the paper, but I’m not sure if that connects well enough. Any ideas/suggestions?

    Ok MuseBlog, I need help.

I’m in MUN, and I have Serbia. I’m on the Historic Security Council and basically I’m in a pickle as to whether to decide to fight for the Rwandan Genocide being considered a genocide or not on April 18th, 1994 with not extensive knowledge yet but enough to know that the number of Tutsi’s being massacred is extremely high.

I know it’s a big issue, but any thoughts would be really appreciated! I’m trying to write my position paper… Because Serbia has relations with Russia, who are typically not supportive of intervention, I’m trying to defend not calling it a genocide, which would allow UNAMIR to bring in military forces into Rwanda… but it’s hard. Also, my brain is turning to mush.

Help? (Ps.. probably the wrong thread, but general tips on MUN for a first-timer would also be very appreciated, I know there are a lot of MBers who also do MUN.) Thanks!

Calling all the spanish-speaking MBers: can I ask you an enormous favor?
