Let’s see… What does Harry think the flute Hagrid gives him sounds like?
An owl, of course
“…which sounded a bit like an owl.”
Before Hagrid came on the midnight of Harry’s birthday, what was Harry planning to do at midnight? (first book)
Wake Dudley, just to annoy him
“Maybe he’d wake Dudley up just to annoy him.”
1 (Rosebud)- an owl.
How is Nymphandora Tonks related to Sirius Black?
Cousins!
“Oh yeah, her mother, Andromeda, was my favorite cousin.”
2 (Koko A) – wake up Dudley.
3 (Choklit) – Second cousin? Sirius’s cousin is her mom. Not sure what you call that.
What color are James’s eyes?
Hazel, and isn’t his nose longer than Harry’s?
Sirius and Tonks are first cousins once removed. His grandfather Pollux is Nymphadora’s great-grandfather.
(I’d say Nymphadora turned out suprisingly well for someone whose aunts are Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange.)
Tonks is amazing compared to Bellatrix.
1. An owl
2. I don’t recall right off.
3. They’re cousins of some variety.
4. Brown, I believe. Not green, because Harry “has his mother’s eyes”, so I’m going with brown.
Where does Snape live?
Spinner’s End
Which, is a muggle town.
“He lives here? In this Muggle dunghill? We must be the first of our kind ever to set foot – ”
Which is to say, Spinner’s End.
I was having a terrible time trying to remember this when I was lying down this morning, so –
What is Golpalott’s Third Law?
Something along the lines of the antidote for a poison with multiple poisonous components is more than the sum of the individual antidotes combined? Or am I thinking of something else….
No, that’s right. Hermione spoke it so quickly that JKR used hyphens instead of spaces. The exact quote began with, “Golpalott’s-third-law-states-that-an-antidote-must-be-equal-to-more-than-the-sum-of,” and she ended taunting Harry about not being able to be helped by the Prince this time, so fo course she was angry to be proven wrong.
For anyone who hasn’t been reading the random thread, there’s going to be a trivia competition between Pax, Mikazuki, Koko’s Apprentice, me, probably Neptune, and possibly starr. We need to figure out how this is going to work so I’m going to copy and paste some things that Luna and MissSwann said when they had a similar competition, then make some suggestions of my own because we have more people. Anyway, Luna gave these rules:
“1. This one’s fairly obvious: Answers must be from memory–no looking them up online or in the books.
2. Only questions that are answered in the books (i.e. not off of JKR’s website). However, I am willing to scratch this rule, if you wish. It matters not.
3. Lessee–points. Let’s call them pottermania points, and we can store them in our names for the duration of our tournament.”
Later MissSwannn rephrased it as, “The rules are simple; no cheating (ie, surfing the web or using the books) and no flaming. ^^ Yay!” and Luna added, “Just one addition: Each correct question is worth one point (which can be stored in our name for the duration of the tournament).”
The next thing she said was about trivia questions; Apparently they’d spent time making lists; personally, I’d rather just make them up as we go. The problem is that we have more people than they did. In their competition, Luna gave MissSwann questions, and MissSwann gave Luna questions. That won’t work here, so how about we have several rounds of 2 people each, like they did with teams in Quidditch matches in the books? Neptune can have a match with starr if they can both do it, as starr was the person Neptune originally challenged; this will be whenever it’s most convenient, I suppose. Anyway, the 3 winners will play each other… but how will that work? Maybe we it would be best if we had 8 people; then we’d have 4 winners and they could play each other in groups of 2 as well, and then those 2 winners could play each other? It would take quite a while, which is good, and it would make sense. I’m sure we could find 2 people who are willing to play. All this is unless Neptune and starr both can’t play; then we’d have 4 people, which would be quite simple, exactly like House Quidditch matches. Anyway, if the number of people who play can’t be 2 to the power of something, we’ll just have to figure something out. Oh, and for that to work, we’d have to play for a set amount of points, time, or questions; I prefer questions, but maybe we could vote?
Q&A:
Q: “Is it possible for a passerby to answer?”
–Zinc and Leafygreen
A: “I dunno…Wait, I’ve got it! Other MBers besides [the competitors] could answer, but I shall request that you all wait until one of the competitors … has answered. That way y’all could still answer the zillions of trivia, but [the competitors] would have first dibs on answering.”
–Luna
Q: “Might I ask you two something? Can others of us post questions for you, clearly labeled for your competition, and whoever answers it correctly first gets a Potterpoint? I am asking this because I have a few very good questions and I am just itching to use them.”
–groundhog
A: “I’m cool with that, what do you say, MissSwann?
The only potential problem is that I think [someone who posts more] might have a slight advantage.”
–Luna
“Hmmm. Perhaps we could give a warning some time before posting a question, something like: I will be posting my question(s) at [insert time of day here] on [insert date here]. Then [someone who doesn’t post as much] could make sure that [en] is on at that time.”
–groundhog
“that might work, depending on [everyone]’s schedule[s]…..”
–Luna
“Sounds good.”
–MissSwann.
“I like the idea of the audience questions, but I’ll just say you’d better work out an awesome system.”
–THF
Q: “I think that if we get an answer wrong, the other person gets a point. Cool?”
–MissSwann
A: “Sure, that works for me.”
–Luna
I don’t think that would really work for us because there were so many people, though, and it would be difficult to decide whether or not everyone else gets the point or just the person you’re competing against. Either way, I doubt it would be as fair in our case.
So starr needs to say whether or not she’s competing, someone needs to give her a deadline, and we need to vote on when to end rounds. Then we can start!
Why don’t we all verse each other first one-on-one, like you said (We’ll have to decide who goes against who.), and the winners of the competitions can just say two questions instead of one, and whoever posts first can get their pick of which question they want to answer? If Starr can compete, anyway. If she can’t, then we can either find someone else to replace her, or I’ll just watch. (With popcorn! ;)), and you’ll have a number divisible by two at the end. Of course, if two/three (depending on Starr) people want to join us, then yeah. Also, I vote for ending rounds after fifteen questions.
I agree with all of that. I think that if starr doesn’t say anything by tomorrow, we’ll just have to start anyway. After all, she can still start in a later round if she wants.
I’m good with that. Who can I face?
Does anyone want to face me in HP trivia one on one? Or have we not started yet?
I will. We haven’t started yet; we’re waiting for Starr to say (by the end of today) if she can compete, I believe. If she can’t/doesn’t respond, then–Rosebud, want to join?
Ok, who am I up against?
I don’t think that’s decided… Mikazuki is against Koko’s Apprentice, and as for the others, it’s not known.
Rosebud, you can join.
Why don’t KA and Mikazuki just go ahead an start, since they know who their opponent is?
Can I join, or is it too late?

I am so excited that a new one of these threads is up and running!
OK, In the epilogue of Deathly Hallows, what charm did Ron say he could use instead of his wing mirror?
A Super-Sensory Charm, I believe it was.
OK, in the epilogue of Deathly Hallows, what charm did Ron say he could use instead of his wing-mirror?
Supersensory Charm, I believe.
What fruit was Harry peeling/eating in the Celestina Warbeck scene of Christmas break in book 6?
Satsuma, wasn’t it?
It wasn’t Harry peeling it, it was Mr. Weasley. But it was a satsuma.
It wasn’t. It was Mr. Weasley, and he was peeling a satsuma.
As I’m mounting my high horse, I might just add thaat I totally feel like this is being ressurected because of my return to MB. (It’s all in my head but my ego needs to eat too.)

By the way, hi back!
What is the first Gilderoy Lockhart book introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?
It was something about removing household pests, but I don’t recall the title.
Gilderoy Lockhart’s Guide to Household Pests
I forget what it was called. Gilderoy Lockhart’s Guide to Household Pests?
Who is the first to die in Deathly Hallows?
Hedwig or Mad-Eye. Since we did not actually see Mad-Eye die, we do not know who died first. It was probably Hedwig, though. Anyway, we heard about her first. Or do you mean only including humans? If so, Mad-Eye.
Charity Burbage, heavily implied to have been killed by Nagini, in Malfoy Manor.
Is it Charity Babbage?
Charity Burbage, Muggle Studies professor at Hogwarts (or she was anyway).
Oops.
Let’s see… Let’s start with a question from the fourth book.
What happened to Mr. Bagman because Harry and Cedric won the tournament?
(Remember, only Mikazuki can answer!)
Bagman bet everything on Harry winning, and since he technically drew with Cedric, the Goblins he had been gambling won. He lost everything; he had to run. (He lost all his money.)
Okay…how about this. Fourth book~
Sometime after it was revealed that Krum was on the Durmstrang ship, Harry, Ron, and Hermione overhear a few fans. What were they squabbling over?
Was this when he was swimming in the lake?
I know this isn’t a direct answer, but please refrain from posting things that could help or hinder someone. It is a one-on-one match.
17.1-You are correct! Score- Mikazuki-1 PP, KA 0 PP
My answer: They were talking about how they could get Krum to sign their belongings, borrowing quills and wondering if they could get him to sign in lipstick. (And no, Neptune, this was not when he was swimming in the lake. And, yes, I agree with R_D)
My question: (Fourth book again) Who were the four people taken to be saved in the second challenge? (Names and relations to champions please)
Correct! KA- 1PP, Mika- 1PP.
Ronald Weasly- Harry’s best mate. Hermione Granger- Viktor Krum’s love. Gabriel[le?] Delacour- Fleur Delacour’s little sister. Cho Chang- Cedric Diggory’s girlfriend.
Okay, here’s my question: Sixth book this time. What had Professor Slughorn splattered on the walls of the house he was in when Harry and Dumbledore entered?
You don’t have to do this, of course, but it might be easier to store your Potterpoints in your name instead of having to write it in each post here. That’s what they did last time, at least.
Yes-Correct (And I believe it is spelled Gabrielle) 1 PP to you!
Answer: Dragon blood. I remember that was one of the reasons that Dumbledore knew it was not a real Death Eater attack.
Question: How did Neville’s family know that he was magical, and how was he rewarded for it? (I don’t remember what book it was mentinoned in)
It was the first book.
Yes, and a Potterpoint to you!
Score: Koko 2 PP, Mika 2 PP.
His uncle dropped him out of a window, and he bounced. His uncle was so pleased that he gave Neville a toad.
Second book ~ Who was the first to get petrified?
Correct!!!! Score-Koko 2PP Mika 3PP
Answer: There are really three possible answers here:
1. Nobody knows. The Chamber of Secrets was opened 50 years before Harry came to school, and they never said who was the first then.
2. Mrs. Norris (If you count non-humans)
3. Colin Creevey
Question: First Book- What were two things that Uncle Vernon saw a cat doing near the beginning of the book that he considered odd?
Oops. I should have specified; I meant when Harry was at school.
But yeah, right!!! Score: Koko- 3 PP, Mika- 3 PP
He saw the cat sitting still for a long while and reading a map and sign.
Third book. What was in the corner of Professor Lupin’s office when he taught at Hogwarts?
Correct! Score- Koko 3 PP, Mika 4 PP. We just can’t stump each other, can we?!
Answer: A grindylow in a tank, wasn’t it? (I think that’s a direct quote, not sure)
Question: What type of wood and core is Harry’s wand?
Guess not!
Score- Koko- 4 PP, Mika- 4 PP.
Holly and phoenix feather.
What are the horcruxes? (Bonus: How did Harry/Dumbledore/Ron/Hermione destroy them?)
Yes!!! Score- Koko 4(I would change my name to 4 PP but I’m too lazy to go do it), Mika 5
Answer: The horcruxes are pieces of one’s soul that were split from the original and stored in an object, by an act of horrible evil such as murder. The horcruxes were destroyed
1. Riddle’s diary stabbed with basilisk fang
2. Gaunt’s ring pried open by Dumbledore with Godric’s sword
3. The locket, stabbed with said sword by Ron
4. The cup, also stabbed with sword
5. The tiara, killed by a Fiendfyre cast by Crabbe or Goyle, can’t remember which one.
6. The snake, killed by Neville because Harry told him to.
7. Harry, the one Voldemort never meant to create, destroyed by Voldemort.
Question: In the book where Harry was caught hiding under a window shielded by a bush listening to the news, what did he respond when Uncle Vernon asked him why he was listening to the news again?
(Not exact quote, but general phrase of his response. This one is really hard because I think we need harder questions).
Yup!!! Score: Koko- 5 PP, Mika- 5 PP.
Somewhere along the lines of: It changes everyday, you know.
Okay, hard questions.
What (at least three things) did Sirius have on his wall in his room?
“Well, it changes every day, you see.”
“Don’t be smart with me, boy!”
Wait, so how can I join the potterpoint game?
We were going to have about 3 one on one contests, but so far only Mika and I have one going, so if you find someone to face one on one it’s possible you could join. Anyone opposed?
Oh, I thought they were going to be one at a time. I forgot that, with the convenience of the Internet, we could just do them all at once! I’ll do it with you, Rosebud. Let’s see… Name one thing Luna probably did when she was either 12 or 13 years old. (This is really hard, I know, but you just have to think about it)…
OH BIBLI YOU ARE CRUEL
Okay. So. When Luna was 12 or 13, she would’ve been in second year. Since she’s a year younger than Harry, that would’ve been during the events of PoA. She was not old enough to visit Hogsmeade then, so it can’t have anything to do with that. Her mom died when she was 9, so it can’t have anything to do with that. Umm….
I guess I don’t understand your question very well. Can it be anything? Or at least, anything that’s not blindingly obvious? Or, is there a specific answer?
While I fret and chew my fingernails, I’ll return a slightly less challenging question of my own: What did Harry eat for dinner at the Yule Ball?
Anything, yes. Well… I suppose not blindingly obvious things… I’ll give you half a point for something blindingly obvious, and 2 points for what I have in mind, just because it’s so hard. Mind you, I only have a specific answer in mind because I only know of one thing she (probably) did that isn’t blindingly obvious (like go to Hogwarts, like you already said).
Actually, how about this: I’ll give you a hint, and if you get it, you get 1 and a half points. If you don’t, you can still get something blindingly obvious for a quarter of a point. Anyway, the hint is that it takes place during the summer, and it’s just ‘the Lovegoods’ that are mentioned, not Luna in particular, but it seems most likely that she was there. Also, the next one can be easy, just to make up for this.
I don’t actually know the answer to your question, either… Um… Well he got to choose, and he wondered if Hermione would object because the house elves had to work harder that way, but I don’t know what he had! Well, he likes treacle tarts; what about those? And, um, pumpkin juice, maybe? And bread? And presumably something else?
Hm. All I can think of is the Quidditch World Cup. Is that the answer?
As for my question, nope, I’m talking about his main meal. He never ate it before in the books, as far as I know.
Yes, it’s the World Cup. Er… some sort of soup?
What are all the classes you can take at Hogwarts, including electives but not clubs, societies or teams?
Yes, it’s some sort of soup. I’ll give you 1.5 PP if you can’t remember what kind, and 2 PP if you can.
Charms. Transfiguration. Potions. Defense Against the Dark Arts. Astronomy. Divination. Care of Magical Creatures. Arithmancy. Muggle Studies. Ancient Runes. I feel like I’m missing one
Oh, cake! Flying lessons!
Um… Shellfish? Other than bouillabaise, I mean, as they had that before. I really just don’t know…
You forgot 2 more classes. It’s much easier to remember after you realize there are 7 core classes. Anyway, you get partial credit for getting some of them right, but exactly how much depends on whether you can think of the others. I won’t take any points off for not immediately getting flying lessons, though, because it often seems to me that it isn’t really considered as much of a class as the others; for example, Madam Hooch never sits at the Head table. Then again, neither does Professor Trelawney… But still.
24.1.1.1: Oh,. Sorry for suggesting it, then. I won’t put points in my name. I have no idea why it’s a bad idea, though, so I second KA’s question.
No, not shellfish. It was goulash.
And, 2 more classes… Oh, wow, how did I not remember History of Magic?!
And there’s another one, too… must think!!! I only have 6 more minutes until I have to go to class…Aha! Herbology! Herbology!
Wow, I’m stupid *facepalm*
How does Hagrid describe the guy who sold him Fluffy?
Biblio-1.5 PP
Rose- 1.5 PP
Right! I’ll give you 11/12 of a point for that, then (the 2 points before were just because the question was hard; from now on, I think it’d be best to just use one for question, which is what we’re doing now).
He either said, “Bought him off a Greek chappie in a pub,” or “from a pub.” He also said that he never took his cloak off because “Yeh get a lot of funny folk in the Hog’s Head.” Also, “Might’ve been a dragon dealer,” though I doubted it immediately, because “He seemed a bit keen to get rid of him, ter be honest,” or something like that. Also, he won Fluffy in some sort of game, possibly but not necessarily (I can’t emember) involving cards of some sort.
What’s Fleur’s middle name?
I’m 99% sure that “Yeh get a lot of funny folk in the Hog’s Head†and “Might’ve been a dragon dealer†were both about Quirrel when he sold Hagrid Norbert, but it doesn’t matter to me since you got the Greek chappie bit.
Your question: Oh gosh… I have absolutely no idea at all.
Wait… one and one TWELFTH of a point? Did you mean one HALF?
No, I mean eleven twelfths of a point. You got all 12 classes (13 if you count flying lessons), but I took off one twelfth because you didn’t think of the last two at first (those are two twelfths, but you got them eventually).
Fleur’s middle name is Isabel. It was mentioned at the wedding.

You should be worried about You-No-Poo!

Question: What do the following spells do: Orchideus, Oppugno, and Confringo?
Oh, no — not points in blognames again. This is not a good idea, folks.
Speaking as the regretful originator of the aforementioned derangement, I am forced to agree.
Speaking as one of two people who got the points from you, I also agree.
Mostly because they mess with the RC.
How do they do that?
Well, those were the original spdzk points. And I think they got swapped around a lot. Also, I didn’t bank on everyone else creating their own varieties. Stupid social experiments…
Forgive me for my ignorqnce, but what is wrong with it?
Correct! Score: Koko- 7 PP, Mika- 7 PP.
Wait, I really got that right?!
Oo…kay. Oppugno is the spell that Hermione used to set the birds on Ron, right? We never know exactly what it does, but I’m guessing it’s something along the lines of “attack” or “control birds”. Orchideus…hmm, either it produces flowers or wine. I’ll go with flowers, I suppose…
Confringo. Er, just a wild stab in the dark, but does it make your teeth grow to a ridiculous size?
I shall retaliate, perhaps!
What was the first question on Harry’s Charms O.W.L. ?
Oppugno is the Latin word for “I attack”.
Hermoione used the spell Avis to set birds on Ron.
*Laughs*
I am sorry, but you are incorrect. Harry used Confringo in the 7th book to explode the sidecar. Score Koko 8 Mika 7

Question: What was the effect of relashio in the fourth book during the second challenge?

Oh, really? I’ve also only recently started playing and thus am horrible at it, and I want to play, but it’d feel much more awkward online than usual playing really badly because there’s a permanent record of it; I won’t mind at all if the other person’s really bad, too, though. I am here! Okay…um…
My question: What is the name of the witch who Mr. Weasley was talking to when he got on the elevator with Harry at the Ministry in Book 7?
Yay! Hm… Eh… I have no idea.
Who is Euan?
I have no idea who Euan is (the answer to my question was Wakanda, by the way.)
Oh, that does sound a bit familiar. Euan was a Ravenclaw boy whose last name was Abercrombie; I believe he was in his first year in book 5, although I’m not sure about that. He was afraid of Harry because of the Daily Prophet.
Besides in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, how many times did Fire-Crabs either appear or be mentioned?
Um…uh…once?
…Wait, it wasn’t my turn to ask questions. Oops. Well, then, you’ll get a double question-asking turn, too. It was twice–first they actually appear in book 3 in the pet shop; they weren’t called that by name but there were jewelled tortoises, and then in book 4, Rita Skeeter mentioned that Blast-Ended Skrewts were a cross between manticores and Fire-Crabs.
No consulting your books.
What is the last word of the epilogue?
Well?
I think that’s right. “His scar had not hurt in 19 years. All was well.” or something like that.
It’s definitely right.
