    1. Actually post on MuseBlog, and
    2. Start to give in to comment nesting,
a new random thread is created and my comments are guaranteed to be forgotten.

    • Know what? You’re right. We had some good conversations in progress on the first random thread, and it’s a shame to interrupt them. I’ll take this one off line and restore that one to its former place of pride until August 15.

Re: Reminiscence- for me, it’s a bit weird. I had been lurking for a while, and I came on 4 days after Fibloid Studge. So I remember the old design fairly well.

HOWEVER, I don’t reminisce about it. Why? The great blog shutdown in April forced us all to Muse Academy, which had and still has that design. I have some bad memories associated with it. Not that I don’t like it, it’s just that my early days as a museblogger were… interesting.

I think I actually accidentally joined. I’m pretty sure my first message to the Gaboomba was written to the fan page itself. It was only later that people started talking to each other through the Gaboomba and I joined in that then. And then one day there was a link to this new thing, MuseBlog and I saw that Grant had followed it and posted and then I did the same and voila our conversation moved here.

      • Bibliophile says:

There are 2 activities, really: “Talking” to fireflies (That’s what both of my books call it) and having them “talk” to you. The former only works for one species, Photinus Pyralis. You’ll have to see if it lives in your area. If not, I’ve heard you can still do it with other fireflies, but you have to watch them to find out their flash pattern first, which could be fun or tedious depending on your interests. Take a small flashlight over to a firefly. Wait until he flashes, then turn your flashlight toward the ground and turn it on for one second. He’ll think it’s a female firefly. You can keep doing this as long as you want. It’s a good way to catch the ones that are too high, if Errata or anyone she knows ever wants to. Or you can just watch them react.
Alternatively, take a large flashlight and do the same except “keeping the lens of the light almost flat on the ground. When you see the male flashing, tilt your light up a little on the side that faces him and give it a flash.”
The next works with all male fireflies and isn’t a more fun method of catching them or just interacting if catching’s not your thing but something to do once they’re in the jar.
When fireflies are in an area with hotter temperature, they flash more quickly. Dipping the jar in warmer and warmer water can be interesting, but
WARNING: “You should never create conditions so extreme that these creatures become overwhelmed by the heat. Instead, raise the temperature gradually by adding more warm water to the pot.” And start with lukewarm water.

Yikes, it’s literally been years since I last posted here. I used to be pretty active, but then I went to college and between classes and social stuff, I didn’t spend as much time online and ended up losing touch with the blog. I recently had the opportunity during a semester abroad in England to organize kokons with Mel and Paul, though, which reminded me how fun Musers are and inspired me to come back to the blog now that I’m home and have some time for it. I probably won’t have time for RPGs, but I do intend to do my best to keep up with enough other threads to be an active MBer again.

Okay, so I don’t have any good photos because I wasn’t able to take any with anyone, but…

So, last year, as chronicled in the thread “KaiYves at the World Science Festival” and my Muserology article, I went to the World Science Festival with my friend Erin. Among other things, I asked a question about creating fingerless space gloves to spacesuit designer Dava Newman and got autographs from astronauts Sandra Magnus and Leland Melvin.

Dr. Magnus, as I hope you all will remember, was aboard the final Space Shuttle Mission, STS-135 Atlantis, last month, while Mr. Melvin is now in charge of NASA’s education department.

After Erin let me know that the STS-135 crew would be appearing at the American Museum of Natural History yesterday and the Intrepid tomorrow, we both asked our parents to take us. (Erin had golf camp, but her mom got her permission to come to the museum first and arrive late to camp.)

We got to sit under the Hayden Sphere in the Rose Center for Earth and Space, where everything is all shiny and white and sci-fi-looking. The astronauts talked about the mission and showed a video about it that included the song “Countdown”, which I sung along quietly to. Then they took questions from the audience. Erin and I didn’t raise our hands because we wanted to give all of the little kids a turn first.

So, Erin and I got in line for autographs, and even though there were a lot of people, so everything was hurried, all of the astronauts were really nice to us.

Erin told Commander Chris Ferguson “Thank you for being awesome.”, and he said “Thank you, but I don’t know if awesome is the right word.”, and I said “No, you are!” (Also, he looks like Robert. Just throwing that out there.)

I was wearing my fingerless gloves, and when we got to Sandy Magnus, I went “Do you remember us from the World Science Festival? I was the girl with the gloves who asked if Mike Fincke had stage fright?”

“And I was the girl next to her.” Erin added.

“Oh yes, I remember you! I remember the gloves!” She said, and all of her crewmembers laughed. “That was fun, at the World Science Festival. It was really great.”

So after we got our autographs, we went up to the upper level and spied on them signing things for other people until they had to go. Then we looked around the Rose Center a little before Erin had to leave.

    It was so great!

    Hi everyone.

Back from Ashland after a very unpleasant, surreal experience on the Greyhound. The bus we were supposed to catch (at 2:30 am) was full, so we had to wait for the next one, which didn’t come until 4. AM. I was only half-awake most of the time, but it was freezing and I was sitting by strangers and there was a crying baby and I wanted nothing more than to go to sleep for like twelve hours. And then we got to Portland only to find that the delay had caused us to miss our next bus and we were stuck there ALL DAY.

In the future, I will always take the train.

ANYWAY, Ashland was wonderful, though three or four days with only three plays and no activities planned is a little too long for such a small town. But the plays were ~*LOVE*~ and I’m soooooooo excited for next year.

And now I’m back and I’m going to school in a week and my mom is moving in less than two and the house is CHAOS and there is almost nothing in the fridge.

I need to finish packing (again). And the sewing machine broke while I was finishing my sheet. ARGH.

Speaking of which, I am totally going to be in Portland for the Pirate Festival. YESSSSS

OH and today I bought “Rise Up Singing” and Robin Williamson’s (of the Incredible String Band) fiddle tunes book.

      • Two words: baking soda.

When I was in high school, I spent a summer at a special Governor’s School science-and-math program. I knew that my roommate-to-be was a chemistry geek and a prankster, so when packing I impulsively took along a huge box of baking soda. I wasn’t sure exactly why, but I knew that baking soda absorbs odors, puts out fires, and neutralizes acids, so I just intuited that it might come in handy.

It did. Has anybody heard of butyric acid? Anyway, I highly recommend huge boxes of baking soda to dorm-dwellers.

        Pie 0

        • Jadestone says:

Yes! I also vouch for the powers of baking soda. This! If you have a fridge you can keep it in there and it does doubly good as well. It’s also really good for cleaning surfaces, which you will need at some point in the year, and I highly recommend wiping down everything in your room before you unpack even if just because you feel so much better about it afterwards.

Also baking soda was required in every recipe I tried to cook and it was always hard to get ahold of. No one had any on hand, all the dorm kitchens had were baking powder, and I did almost all my baking after midnight so there was never time to run to the store. And unlike many other things, you can’t substitute stuff for it very easily (by the way, you can substitute almost anything with applesauce or bananas. Eggs, oil, butter… it’s great. I had a friend who was allergic to eggs so I had a bunch of those little individual servings of Mott’s on hand. Cheaper and last longer than eggs too! Just add a tiiiny bit more of the baking soda with them).

It’s the other way around. Baking powder will react with water and acid, but baking soda will only react to acid. However, if you mix baking soda with cream of tartar (which I think is an acidic salt (if that’s even possible)) in the right ratios you’ll have made baking powder.

I’m very iffy on the science of it, which I shouldn’t be because I think it’s actually fairly simple, but that’s how it goes.

I’ll explain first. There are lots of green anoles in my yard. Lots of them. I see them almost every time I go outside, and I go outside at least twice a day, and when I see one, I watch it until it goes out of sight and cannot be found. Thus, I see them doing a lot of things, and it’s interesting. Unfortunately, I tend to inadvertently scare them. When they’re scared, they either run, hide, or try to intimidate me. They nod their heads furiously and a bright red neck sac becomes visible. I’d never seen one without the other. Anyway, once I watched a tiny green anole that I suspected was very young, and he (I looked it up just now, and only males do the throat sac thing), and he nodded his head furiously, but the neck sac didn’t appear. I developed 2 hypotheses:
        1. They’re born with the instinct to do this, but the neck sac doesn’t develop until they’re older, and
        2. They have the instinct to try, but they have to practice, so it doesn’t work at first.
I think 1 is more likely, but I’m still not sure. Anyway, I couldn’t know whether either was correct until I found another young green anole. Eventually, I did, and the same thing happened, so it’s now much less likely to have been a fluke or an only semi-aggressive anole or something because it happened twice, and the second was even smaller than the first.

      *currently burning up inside*

Ahem, I’ve studied psychology. Fears are only phobias if-

They are so extreme that you will go out of your way to avoid the possibility of that occuring. A true pyrophobe (just making that up…) would not only not light a fireplace, he would not have a fireplace, nor would he go places with fireplace, nor would he even watch a movie where there was any fire at all.

They are also linked with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder- Why? Obsessive Compuslive Disorder means that you have Obsessions (such as a fear of germs) which lead to Compulsions (such as constant handwashing). A phobia is essentially the Obsessions relating to a specific object without specific Compulsions.

Phobias are exceedingly uncommon- however, simple fears of things are fairly common. So, I’m guessing many of you have fears rather than phobias (unless it’s been diagnosed). For example- Biblio, I seriously doubt that you’d be able to function at all with a true phobia of open doors- you would demand that your parents have no doors in the house, or that they always close them. Now, that may be true, and I may be misevaluating you, but I doubt it is an actual phobia. No offense if it is, and is causing serious stress in your life (if it is, you should look into behavioral therapy.) but I find it highly unlikely

I don’t know very much about manias, so I won’t comment on them, but I’ll say again- it only gets a real name and is a real disorder if it is interfering with your life.

Sorry if I offended anyone with this rant, but as someone who’s studied psychology fairly in depth, it really annoys me.

From what I’ve read, “open door phobia” in any case really isn’t a phobia, but for some reason that’s what it’s called. At least, I’ve never seen a report of it that really seems like a phobia. But that seems to be the name of it.
Another reason why it isn’t a phobia is that it generally involves the compulsion to close the doors as well. Perhaps I should boycott the name. But you are right; it’s not a phobia. My point is that if it isn’t then it doesn’t exist at all, and it’s really the name that’s wrong; it’s not just misuse on my part. But I should avoid using it because it’ not accurate. It’s just that pyrophobes exist, but I’m probably the closest thing to an open door phobe there is, except for some reason that’s the name for it…
I could be entirely wrong. I haven’t read that much about it, and it’s quite possible that there are people with a true phobia of it; I just haven’t heard of it. Of course, if I am wrong, that means that it really is that people like me keep saying they have it and so others aren’t sure if it’s real, which would be a major problem and I would be very sorry, and I hope my entire post sounds egocentric. When I looked online, all I could find were reports like mine, except there did seem to be an accepted name. Maybe I did make a too-broad generalization, and I’m really sorry if so.

Not necessarily. People with clinical gephyrophobia don’t move to the middle of a desert–they just avoid bridges as much as they can, most likely only crossing bodies of water by boat even though that may be much more difficult, time-consuming, or expensive. Enc has some good points, but naturally such matters are matters of constant debate amongst psychologists.

I’d also mention that phobias are not “exceedingly uncommon”. They are uncommon, but not exceedingly so. Severely life-altering phobias are, but there are varying levels of phobia. A 2002 study estimated that about 4.4% of the population of the United States has a specific phobia. Enceladus seems to be focusing mainly on criterion 5 that the DSM-IV-TR gives: “The avoidance, anxious anticipation or distress in the feared situation(s) interferes significantly with the person’s normal routine, occupational (or academic) functioning, or social activities or relationships, or there is marked distress about having the phobia.” The interpretation of this criterion varies from doctor to doctor, so results may vary.

It’s basically what I guessed it was earlier–there are around two-three different “areas” for each chapter, and you explore these areas to collect items and bits of extra JKR goodies.
The best part is getting a wand and sorted into your house! The questions are different for each person and are so unique! I have a 14.5-inch Alder wand with a phoenix feather core, and I am in Ravenclaw. (Tangent: One of my questions from the sorting hat was “Black or white?” I immediately thought of how Pokemon had already made this decision for me, and chose white).
You earn one house point every time you find something. There are two interactive “games” to earn more house points. You can brew potions and for every successful potion you earn 5 house points. There is also a deuling game, but it has been closed for maintenance ever since before I got in, so I have no idea how it works.
Apparently a couple of people have uploaded their own artwork already, but I have no idea how to do it. It’s probably been closed since, again, before I got in.
All in all, I thought it was great! The artwork for each area was good, and I liked how there are very few faces shown (Quirrell’s was the only one I noticed). A drawback is that there is no sound, but that’s a common complaint and they will probably work on it. Another common complaint is that there’s not much to do after you finish the book, but I think that once dueling gets back up online it’ll be better.
The best two new JKR writings so far are the ones about wands and Professor McGonagall’s backstory.
Oh, and there are a little more than 20,000 “registered students” at Hogwarts right now, so I guess about 7,000 emails are sent in each batch.

Or you can borrow someone else’s Mac (they’re sure to be everywhere when you go to college) or stop by the library/apple store and to it there, too. Anyway, in personal news [[I’m not up to writing a whole book about this right now, so I’m going to try to gloss over it quickly for you]] [[believe me, what you see below is the short version]]: So, some of you probably know that I have Crohn’s Disease (there was a thread about my intestines a few years ago, if anyone remembers) (here:https://musefanpage.com/blog/?p=1459). Basically, it’s a chronic autoimmune disease that targets the digestive system. I was diagnosed about 8 years ago, and I’ve been on a variety of medications and such since then, treating this and that. I have a very asymptomatic case of the disease (about 40% of patients are like this), so I don’t feel pain until I’m really in trouble. Last week, I woke up in the middle of the night in severe pain and went to the emergency room after many hours of waiting (seeing if it would go away, and also waiting for dawn so we could call my doctor). I had just traveled 10 hours the day before to visit family in Michigan, so we were far away from everything–and ended up driving another 3.5 hours to a really good hospital, because my doctor suspected that I would need surgery. I spent 6 days in the hospital where they calmed my flare (I had a partial bowel obstruction; parts of my intestine have so much scar tissue and inflammation that they’re completely closed up unless they need to squeeze food through–and eventually they can’t even do that) with hardcore IV drugs and hospital stuff. When I was discharged, we drove back home (so much for family vacation, heh), and I’ve been to many doctors since then. They can’t seem to agree on whether I need surgery now (followed by intense IV chemo-like medications), or whether I should start the medications first and see if they can postpone surgery. Also, college starts on Wednesday, and it looks like I probably won’t be able to make it on time. So that’s where I am now. /lifeupdate.

Question: Is there a word for the female equivalent of a metrosexual — a straight woman who conforms to lesbian stereotypes?

That’s what I’ve always felt like, since I was maybe six or seven, but I’m noticing it more just now… I used to resent the fact that everyone thought I was a boy, but in another way, it’s kind of fun to be androgynous. It wasn’t really a conscious choice — my hair looks like crap when it’s long, and my voice is deep, and my build is pretty much ‘boy w/ breasts’. But I could have chosen to act girly anyway, and I didn’t.
So now I am fifteen and growing my hair out a bit and starting to notice how this works in different ways. People no longer yell at me in the girl’s bathroom. It’s more in my social choices.
I find myself a bit repulsed, and mystified, by these other girls and women with their long hair and their high squeaky voices and their makeup and their fangirliness and their total buying into the sex-segregated consumer system even when they think they aren’t. I don’t understand the things they talk about amongst themselves.
So I go and hang out with the boys instead. It’s what I’ve always done — when I played boys-vs.-girls games as a little kid, I was always with the boys. They’re more obscene, but there’s less frills, and they’re funnier, and I can relate to them more. And I think they accept me, as something a bit odd. Which is what I am, I suppose.

…I forget what the point of writing all that out was. Just some thoughts, I guess.

Frogs are extremely fascinating creatures. Has anyone here ever observed one eating a bug? I fed a frog that was on my kayak (Sometimes frogs will hope onto your paddle while you are kayaking, and the they usually hop onto the front of the kayak where it’s nice and sunny. Dorable… At least, they do that sometimes in my experience, although maybe that’s because I put my paddle right in front of them. I think kayaks make excellent places to sun onesself, and because most of the rocks around the pond where the frogs are sunning themselves are in shade, they enjoy the opportunity…they usually hop off after a couple of minutes, so I stick really close to the shoreline, but that time window is plenty long enough for me to observe frogs eating.) a dragonfly (dead, don’t worry; I found it in the water. Although I did see a different frog catch a damselfly (like a dragonfly but smaller) out of the air.) and it was extremely interesting to watch en* devour it. En kind of gulped it up, but it didn’t all fit in en’s mouth, so en pushed it in further in with en’s…hands, I know there’s a different word, but I don’t think the forelimbs are flippers so… I’m probably mistaken about what you call a frog’s front legs/arms, sorry about that, I need to look it up….
En’s eyes went down into en’s head as well; it was rather bizarre. Fish thinks it helps them chew.
Anyway, we fed a lot of frogs moths and bugs and spiders and damselflys and dragonflies, although the frogs didn’t seem to want to eat the spider.

There are some basic tricks that are a bit challenging at first because it’s a new set of movements but relatively quick to learn! Butterfly and 2-beat weave (the bases for most other advanced spinning) you can probably get in under half an hour if you try, and the rest depend a bit on how much you practice/how quickly you start to pick it up. But there are a lot of video tutorials and resources online that make learning easier, although learning in person is usually the most helpful in my opinion.

But! You can make a cheap set of your own by putting tennis balls into a pair of nice long knee socks. A little lighter than normal ones but good to start out with to see if you like it!

But they specifically said it would be more thinking. I don’t think you have any idea how painfully easy they were to begin with. In 6th grade, I took an old seventh-grade writing test and got a perfect score. Writing’s supposed to be the hardest for that because you have to do perfectly on both the grammar section and the essay, although I’ve always found it the second-easiest after reading, probably because I’m much, much better at English than my other subjects–but anyway, my history teacher said it would be more analysis, and my science teacher said that it meant we’d be doing actual science for once and not being told the results of the experiments before we do them, and my English teacher said we’d be thinking on a higher level, so I really think that even if that is the rule, this is an exception.

I was inside, so I couldn’t see the insect closely, but as soon as the cardinal flew off, I went to look for signs of what it might have been, and he’d conveniently left behind 3 of the wings. It appears to be perhaps a beetle of some sort. I hope so, because I’m planning on getting a field guide to beetles, as my general insect field guide is so insufficient, which I suppose is understandable as there are more beetle species than plant species; anyway, I’m keeping the wings.

Well, hello again, Museblog. I moved into the dorm two days ago but I’ve been too busy to do anything. I have no free time. Please tell me that this is just because of Orientation Week and things get better later on.

I’m currently waiting to register for my classes. WE couldn’t do it beforehand. Teh anxiety is killing me. The classes I want are open now, but in fifteen minutes who knows?

I’m not going to bore you with all the details of what’s happened to me so far at college. I will tell you, however, that move-in day has earned a place of honor in my top ten worst days ever. At least things have gotten better since then. Part of the problem was in housing. It’s complicated…but suffice to say that I ended up in a single. It’s not where I thought I was going to be, but after the hassle of submitting a room-change request, I’m just glad to have unpacked my stuff. And before you ask, it wasn’t roommate troubles. She didn’t even show up. And then the room I was assigned was on a coed floor by the guys bathroom and I really didn’t want to be there. So I just moved.

OH! I also got a Mac. Typing on it right now. Still need to figure out how to copy and paste, search for keywords, etc. It’s really close to my sign-up time right now.

So to continue with what’s been happening to me these past three days. I have managed to totally avoid eating at a cafeteria. I’m living off free food, which is admittedly helped by the fact that it’s Ramadan and I’m not eating during the day at all. Suhoor is early in the morning and I’ve been eating cake and bagels that I got at events and brought back, and iftar is funded by the Muslim Student association. At the first Iftar, the president of the university came to give a speech. I had to leave early because we had a floor meeting. He left early too, and noticed me grabbing a slice of cheesecake off the untouched dessert table because I didn’t want not get dessert. His reaction was basically, “I see what you’re doing there, sneaking dessert.”

Me: It’s not like that! *really lame explanation*

Anyhow, I had to get back to the dorm, where I had no clue where to go. The president tells me it’s not that hard to find. I give him A Look. He offers to escort me back to the dorm. So we went, making awkward (to me, at least) conversation along the way.

Other random comments…The gym has a rock climbing wall. I have every intention of trying it out. I would have done so already at the “Come and see the gym and all the cool activities it offers!” event, but they ran out of waivers. After I left, they decided that waivers weren’t necessary.

I’m kind of worried that I’m not getting along with anyone on my floor especially well. No roommate, and my room is all they way at the end. And the open-door policy hasn’t seemed to kick in yet. I’m by the laundry, though, so I’ve been saying hi to everyone who comes to do laundry.

This entire post is basically a way to kill time until my second class enrollment session. I could only sign up for two classes the first time around. I signed up for Intro to Logic and Intro to Environmental Studies. I think I’ll be taking Calc and macroeconomics if there’s room.

So far I haven’t painted anything though, I’ve just scraped gunk off of putty knives and scraped and sanded some bike racks.
    It’s not very exciting.
Three hours a day of doing mind-numbing stuff like that seems like a lot more than it really is.

None of my packages have arrived yet. I hope they do soon though, because I need my books and I want my dress and poi. Even though I’ll only be able to wear the dress on weekends, since being on the paint crew means I need to dress for getting disgusting and paint-covered and always wander around campus looking like a scruff.
It’ll be interesting to figure out a showering/clothes changing schedule.

    Anyway.
I think a quick nap is in order, then class.
It’s been exactly a week since I moved in. In two more days I’ll have completed my first week of classes.

I still don’t feel like I should be allowed to be considered a college student.
WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN

If you’re interested in both biology and economics, I recommend connecting the 2 in your mind. People did this automatically in the time of, say, Carl Linnaeus; he said that knowledge of economics without knowledge of biology was like knowing physics without mathematics. I imagine there are some very good books and papers from that time on the subject; the theory only stopped because people stopped thinking of nature as so benevolent. Ecological Economics, a modern book whose author I don’t recall, is also good.

I just got creeped on by a scary ginger! :O GAH! Here I am, walking to convocation with the rest of the Honors Freshmen and he says “Hey I like your hat (I was wearing my beret). It makes your eyes stand out.” I have no idea who this guy is, which is kind of awkward. “Oh. uh.. thanks.” I say. He is wearing a button up shirt over a t shirt. After a long pause, he turns to me and says, “So, can I pull this off unbuttoned do you think?” I stare blankly and say “Ummmmm…. I’d button it up.” He nods and stares at me and I kind of hurry away. GAH!
So during convocation I’m going to sit with my friends and he kind of squeezes in front of me so I’m cut off from them. “Oh haha. I split you guys up.” he says. Creepy! :O Before the speaker gets up there, he turns to me after a long moment of me refusing to look in his direction because I’m weirded out. “So what color ARE your eyes?” he asks me. “Ummmmm… hazel.” I say. “Oh alright. I was having difficulty figuring it out.” And I’m thinking… how long have you been watching my eyes?! “Can you tell what color mine are?” he asks and stares at me. By now I’m very uncomfortable. “Uh…. green?” I guess. He has red hair after all.”Close. They’re actually steal grey!” he says, wiggling his eyebrows. Suddenly another of my friends arrives and saves me from more horrific awkwardness.
So throughout the whole convocation, I see him out of the corner of my eye watching me. I keep my eyes fixed on my book, which I am reading because the speaker is starting to drone. Afterward I escape with my friend as quickly as possible and walk the long way to our dorm. He and a few others follow us though. :O When we get back to the quad, he passes me as I head for a bench to talk to my sister on the phone and winks at me. I think I have a deer int he headlight look. After talking to her for a while, I see him peering out of the door to the building across from mine. I quickly look away and focus very hard on my conversation, but I see him out of the corner of my eye coming back outside and walking towards me. EEP! I jump up hastily and quickly walk inside my dorm. So essentially, I have a scary ginger stalking me on the quad! I think I need a taser.

So I said I’d talk about the clubs and stuff I was interested in earlier. Well, I’m back and ready to roll, thanks to the stash of free candy I saved from the student activities fair. It was held in a field, under the hot sun, and I spent nearly two hours there. I signed up for probably thirty different organizations. Five of which, I’ve determined, I am actually interested in. The yoga club. Model UN. The roleplaying club, called NERD appropriately enough. Manga and Anime. And…the improv comedy troupe. This one was rather astonishing. But last night all the performing groups did presentations, and I really liked the improv, and today I was like, “Why not?” and signed up. And now I have an audition on Monday. I’ve never auditioned for anything. As far as I’m concerned, this is the start of my “doing utterly random things just for the heck of it” college career. Also, they had a cootie catcher that was supposed to be able to tell your fortune. MIne was “You will find magic somewhere.”

My dorm’s decorations are Harry Potter themed. Well, that’s…interesting. So I signed up.

Also my mo thinks that D&D people are weirdos and just kind of…well. She warns me not to get too weird. My thoughts on the matter: 1) Does she mean weirder than I already am? 2) I don’t think she gets that I would have been doing that kind of things years ago if I’d ever had the opportunity.

PS: Incase you were wondering, my dorm has six floors counting the ground floor. That means we have all four houses plus the chamber of secrets and the quidditch pitch/forbidden forest. It goes like this from ground up: Chamber of secrets, hufflepuff, slytherin, ravenclaw, gryffindor, quidditch pitch/ forbidden forest. Oh dear. I hope everything goes well for you! Is there any way you could maybe get someone to tape your lectures so you could at least watch the classes? Maybe if you email them to explain what’s up they can help you figure out where you should be when you get back. Also, I don’t know how much you’ll be out of it after surgery/while you recover, but maybe even getting a tutor to come in and help you figure out which informations the important stuff to know. I’m sure you’ll figure out how to keep yourself caught up though!

And 5 beat weave! It took me a while to figure out the tuck motion but I finally got it. As for me, I don’t pracitce as much as I should, but I’m still struggling to get impossible weave down (not sure there’s a tutorial for it on homeofpoi, though I only looked once), and have been working on my hyperloops a bit. There’s a way to put one into 3-beat weave that’s fun but I can only get the timing right 1/3 of the time so far.
I also should probably work on my isolations (moving your hand in a circle as well so the center of the circle the poi make changes) as well since I’m not to great at those.

My new set are pretty! They’re green-blue-purple material that has a little bit of black/white tiger-stripe pattern and some leopard-spot bits. Then there’s a little bit of excess blue material at the bottom, and then 2 thick purple ribbons about a foot long coming out of the bottom as well. I may end a few more longer thin blue ribbons because I’m really liking the way they trail after the poi. The strings make it a lot harder for me to do hyperloops/tangles and get it out versus my sock poi, though that’s probably a practice thing.

In any case, sending my best wishes your way!! And, as POSOC said, I hope you feel better soon. Keep us updated.

        • Jadestone says:

Well, it originated in New Zealand as part of Maori culture, although it’s evolved a lot since then. It’s essentially weights attached to lengths of string/rope that are swung around in patterns. From New Zealand it made its way to Hawaii, where they lit them on fire while they swung them around and focused more on the performance aspect rather than cultural.

Modern poi (poi is the name of the objects as well as the performance, although the act of swinging them around is also called ‘spinning’ a lot) appear to be longer than the original type and by swinging them in patterns or changing the patterns you can do a lot of different tricks with them. Very basic poi you can make yourself by putting tennis balls (though they’re a bit lighter than most poi) in a pair of knee socks, or attaching them to strings. There are also glow poi, which are reminiscent of fire poi but less dangerous if you hit yourself.

It’s really really cool to watch good spinners. Here’s a good video of a really caking amazing guy, if the GAPAs will allow it (I am in no way affiliated with him although I wiiiiish I could go to Russia and make him teach me D: ). He’s spinning fire poi in this and I don’t even know how he does half the stuff he’s doing.
          http ://www. youtube. com/watch?v=fNj2HUbzJhkk

It’s really impossible to find his videos on youtube without a link, although he’s very good so they really deserve to be on the first page. Anyway in that one there’s a lot of simple tricks and a lot of really cool technical antispin stuff (where the poi spin in different directions).

There’s also a wikipedia page for poi that isn’t bad.

Although most people that I have practiced around don’t seem to think so. Thank goodness I only hit them with sock poi. *heads outside*

        • Jadestone says:

Nice! And yeah you end up hitting yourself/people standing too close a lot at first. Tassels are fun! And make you think about the speed you’re spinning at a bit more (as do glow poi). Still haven’t added more ribbon to mine, waiting until I find the right color. What sort of things have you been trying? Butterflies/weaves?

The pair I have run on LR44 batteries, which are the small round ones you sometimes see in toys or tiny flashlights or compact booklights. There’s 3 in each poi, and you twist the battery cap to turn them on/off. They last pretty long and I got like 12 extra batteries with the poi (as well as a bag to carry them in). They’re also pretty tough/thick rubbery plastic, so while I don’t try to beat them up I don’t worry about cracking them or breaking them at all.

109.1 – But pandemic is for diseases. Madagascar survives because there’s not a whole lot of traffic in or out, but I presume its island-ness makes it a little more prone to natural disasters than other places.

I am curious about this natural disaster thing, though. I don’t have a great understanding of this stuff, so trying to think of criteria for low-risk places just gets me these ideas, which may or may not be correct:
      — Reasonably far from coastline
      — Far from tectonic edges
      — Something about volcanos and being far from them
      — Surrounded by solidly built structures, (for tornadoes–I don’t know if it would make another disaster more likely, but whenever a tornado comes by Pittsburgh, it always fizzles out because it can’t get anywhere)
      — Inherently mild weather–no flash floods, no bothersome desertification issues

I bet there’s already been a good study of this stuff. To Google! (I’ll be back)

      Pie 0
      Squid 0
    • Taiwan Hippo Fan says:

The more I read and think about it, the more I realize must be considered. For example, surely we must also factor in the preparedness of a location, and how well equipped they are to handle a disaster; this would probably affect the level of safety. And then, of course, how to measure “safety” from natural disasters? Is an ideally safe place one in which all buildings are so well built that no natural disaster could affect them? (Impossible, but if it’s the ideal, then that’s one thing.) Is it purely a measure of the danger of the natural disasters that do hit?

I’m going to go with searching for places with few and feeble disasters, but I’ll take whatever I can get. There seems to be a lot of information on the least safe places in the world, but I’m having a bit more trouble finding the especially safe ones.

I’ll be typing in this window as I find stuff out, so this might be a bit disorganized.

There are also places that experience few natural disasters, but are not terrifically habitable ever–they basically experience what would be a natural disaster to a more moderate climate. Like, deserts and stuff. They have their heavy tundra winds or sandstorms, but mostly it’s just awful.

According to a point-system scan of just the United States, Honolulu, Hawaii is considered the safest place, for being “not prone to tornadoes, wind, hail or extreme weather.” That cancels out my theory, I guess, because I guess the volcano isn’t nearby and any tsunamis they get aren’t much trouble.

Showing how little I seem to know, some theories are saying the mountains are generally a safe place to go, because other than the occasional avalanche, I guess they don’t get much in the way of natural disasters.

I found an interesting article on super-safe buildings, but I think that’s not what you’re asking.

EM-DAT says that the countries with the fewest natural disasters are Estonia, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Andorra.

One random website says that the city Powell River in Canada, sitting on the Powell River in Canada, is the safest place ever. But they are only one place, and they also included factors like food supply and vulnerability to terrorism.

I’m not going to do any more of this. I’m a little too good at wasting time.

Wow, that’s pretty good. But one thing you have to remember about the mountains is that avalanches and mudslides are predictable. They come down in the same at-risk areas for generations. Which means if you find a really old house in some mountain valley it’s probably a good idea to hole up there because it survived long enough, which means it’s probably in a good place. Also, avalanches seldom come all the way down the mountains.

Mine was today; I gleaned nothing from it except from her observation that my collarbone is oddly shaped and I should sleep more because I look pale and exhausted.

To tell you the truth, though, I kind of like being uninsured, because now I don’t have to go through blood tests anymore. Or turn up twice a year at a doctor’s office to be poked and prodded- the nurse just gives you a once-over and talks at you for a while.

I’m moving to a bigger house tonight, and yesterday, we went to see the houe. I was quite relieved; the yard was teeming with life. I didn’t know if the former owners used pesticides or anything, you see, and if they had, well, who knows how long it would take to bring creatures back in this drought? But I saw/heard all my most common backyard animal species, or at least signs of them, and I heard a woodpecker and saw an unfamiliar gray bird and–this is the best part–the ants were carrying eggs!!!! I don’t know if they were ant eggs or eggs to be eaten, and I didn’t have a hand lens with me, but it was really awesome. I’ll have to look into that.
Also, I wasn’t even looking for any of this. Usually, I can find all this in the yard I have now–minus the eggs–but I do at least have to actively look. It’s awesome. The only negative thing is that the green anole seemed flightier than the ones at home.

Just a quick note about Irene – it did hit us here pretty hard last night (lots of rain, scary wind, etc.) and at one point we had a tornado warning so my whole family ended up sleeping in the basement. Nothing ended up being damaged and we’re all ok, but it was still pretty scary, especially since we pretty much never get hurricanes here… My dad was pretty much convinced we were going to lose power at some point, though, and by some miracle we haven’t lost it – yet! Supposedly the worst is through, and the wind is still pretty heavy but at least it means that it’s forcing me to stay inside and FINISH SUMMER READING, which I haven’t actually done yet. I have to read Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie, and I’m only about 40 pages in…eek. Luckily it’s pretty short and I think I’ll be able to get through it relatively quickly, but school does start Tuesday…Monday was supposed to be our first day but they already cancelled it because of the hurricane yesterday!

Stuff has been ok for me lately. My best friend’s mom died recently and her funeral was yesterday, so between that and the hurricane it just feels like there’s a lot of suckiness going around… Especially for my friend, of course. We’re not going to the same high school either which is really tough but she’s being so brave and I’m so proud of her. She’s the same age as me and it’s so ridiculously unfair and horrible she had to lose her mom to cancer.

I can’t decide if I want school to start yet or not. Obviously it’s coming quickly and I’m usually very excited about back to school time, but I know I’m going to be swamped in homework pretty soon and actually have to, like, do stuff. The horror! But at the same time, forced social interaction on my part is probably a good thing. I’ve been lurking whenever I can lately, and I’ve seen that a lot of other people have already just started high school or are starting soon like me. Let us freshies stick together! So tonight i was talking with one of the other girls on my floor and she has the entire harry potter set on her bookshelf. Also lord of the rings. And we were talking, and she mentioned that she listened to wizard rock, and I said that I read lots of fanfiction. And then I asked if she liked Avatar the last airbender and she did, and I made her watch the Korra trailer since she hadn’t yet and we agreed that it was totally awesome and I think I’ve found someone I could be geeky with. I just need to get out of my room and talk with people.

Dear whoever or whatever thought it was funny to get me sick on my second day of classes,
If you can take one, here’s a hint: it’s not. Since you obviously don’t have one, here’s a clue: I don’t like it.
I do not appreciate being unable to read my assignments for school and work because all my mind can process is sleep, and my eyes start vibrating in their sockets when I stare at things to try to keep them open.
I do not appreciate having to discuss things in class with a throat that feels like it’s coated in sensitive sandpaper.
I do not like being even more out of breath than necessary because I can’t breathe to walk up the many hills to my dorm.
I do not appreciate having to dress both for the mountain’s temperamental weather and my own body’s.
I am not amused or impressed by getting sick on my second week of classes.

On a brighter note, this evening I shared a poem I wrote with a group of people for the first time in my life.
    And didn’t die.

Then I came back, took a long hot shower and accidentally stumbled into the wrong room. Now I’m hiding in my own drinking miso and hoping that no one will remember it.

Anyway, a lot of my friends still don’t have power, including my boyfriend who is on vacation in Maine, after being away. all. summer. long. I lost power for about 12 hours, but then my cousin brought over a generator and a DVD and we watched a movie, and then the power came back and it was all yayayay power, party it up.
The day that we didn’t have power though, I taught myself how to play banjo Scruggs style (I had previously been play clawhammer-ish), and I like it much better. I plan on continuing playing both styles now. I should be playing with fingerpicks, but they don’t seem necessary.

welp now that i have covered R&R with little pictures of the third doctor

hi museblog, what up. i spent a week camping in the UP with my family which was super fun, hiked tahquamenon falls again and did general swimming, fudge-eating, etc. then on their way back down they dropped me off at finch’s cottage where a bunch of friends had congregated and we had battle tubing showdowns and finch took me out on the jetski and did some highly effective showing off (something about going really really fast and making super sharp turns xP)

also i tried wakeboarding for the first time and i managed to get the board up on top of the water on my first try which apparently is something that nobody does. ben went first and got it up his fourth try and finch’s dad was all impressed and then a few others went and didn’t get up (though in grinch’s case it was because the board was too small for him) and then i went and got up right away and everyone was all “whaaaat.” that was where the impressiveness ended though, standing up fully was really difficult so i spent most of the time sort of squatting with my knees super bent and then trying to stand upright and falling over

also today we were all back in columbus and grinch found a guy at one of the local geek stores who plays mtg (and does other generally awesome nerd things) and so he brought him back to play some edh with us. he’s a creative writing major who’s starting grad school at OSU and moved to columbus about a week ago so we told him what nerd clubs to join and got him some of the necessary food (food is something the area around here does really well, and when you go to ohio state there are certain places you pretty much have to eat at because they’re delicious and awesome).

his only deck was kaalia which he played a couple times and then grinch had him borrow his infamous mono blue and had him try to figure it out without reading through it first. he punted on the infinite combo because he didn’t know all the parts so he discarded a key component but he did some other fun things. he lost but mostly because ian was having fun with a ton of draw effects and i was having fun with megrim and we both had reliquary towers so basically by the time that all got blown up we were both at 40 life and everyone else was at like 10

…if any of that made sense to anyone

also i desperately need to pack tomorrow because on thursday i am moving in to the off-campus house! i set up the gas and electric already but we still have to pay a security deposit and set up internet (we can mooch off resnet until we get it figured out, decided it wasn’t a huge priority with all the free wifi around. we’re getting some super cheap plan, basically just enough to browse and no tv, just the internet). i shouuuuld be okay for the first month’s rent (might talk to my parents about borrowing some money) and work starts up again in mid-september so after that i’ll be reasonably solid and budgeted and such.

    ohgawdadultthings

and then i have a week of house fun before i head to cleveland for yet another concert kokon with jade and grant :D :D :D

So. I have been absent from MuseBlog due to lack of Internet access. This actually has nothing at all to do with the hurricane, which I said would be the only reason I’d leave–sorry about that. I moved, and we don’t have Internet at the new house yet. I’m visiting the old one right now and saying what I must as quickly as possible.
It is amazing. The day before we moved, I went outside. I found a cicada with a broken wing in the middle of the road. En could jump quite well, as I discovered upon trying to pick en up to save en, but en couldn’t fly. I sent positive thoughts at en, held my finger in front of him (picking him up was too hard), and decided to just hope en’d crawl onto it even though I’d just scared en. It worked. En stayed on my hand for a very, very long time before I put en down, never jumping off even though I’d just seen that en was great at jumping.
I kept en in my hand at home for a while, and we bonded. I became extremely concerned about ens future survival. I wondered if I could keep en, so I looked up what cicadas ate. Unfortunately, they drink tree sap and xylem, which I cannot provide, so I released en onto a tree.
Not much later, I went onto MuseBlog and read Rebecca’s cicada comment, which was then in the recent comments bar. I was a bit… nonplussed. I would have been flattered regardless, but the fact that it happened that particular day? It’s really quite amazing.
