September Random Thread, Part 1 — Happy New Year!

The Coptic Orthodox New Year, known as Nayrouz or Nairuz, falls on the first day of the month Thout That’s usually September 11 on the Gregorian calendar (ours), but this year it’s September 12 because 2012 is a leap year.

Nairuz sounds pretty solemn — a religious holiday devoted to remembering martyrs. Still, we hope it’s a peaceful one for the Copts, who, as a religious minority in Egypt, tend to be singled out as scapegoats in times of social unrest.

Above is a picture of Saint George of dragon-killing fame, a favorite of the Copts and one of the most picturesque heroes in anybody’s calendar.

I am OWNING this college thing.
And now, shower and bed. Homework is FOR THE WEAK.
Unless I have to do something super important. But I don’t think I do. So it’s okay, right? It’s just reading, and in this class we have yet to actually discuss the stuff we’re supposed to be reading. I am confuse by this.

    u.u

So I’ll let you guys know how much the theatre people loved my husky squawking at them. They said “excellent” when I walked out, but we shall see.
(I don’t know why I italicized that. It just seemed appropriate for some reason.)

    GOODNIGHT, MY LOVES.

    P.S.
    First post, what whaaaaat?!
Only because I tried to comment on the last one and it was like “lol nope you can’t do that” and so I SOBBED and then there was no new thread so I refreshed the page obsessively and NOW HERE IT IS.

I need some advice: What does one write in a reply to an email from one’s grandmother that mostly consisted of advice on how to pray to Ganesh during an upcoming festival of some sort, when one doesn’t want to mention religion?

Huzzah, it is September. Autumn is drawing nearer; I had forgotten that it is now 23 days away. Come, cold winds and cloudy skies!

There are four days left until I arrive at school; hopefully I will write 2 IB essays and complete other review sections. The less time there is, the more energy I have, seemingly, and I am not leaving this for the last day.

I just remembered that I was going to research the effects that a thunderstorm has on the human body, such as how one has more energy when outside before/during/after one. Has anyone else felt this?

Has anyone ever had one of those times when you refer to yourself as “this part of my brain, that part of my brain, and me” to justify having a three-way argument with yourself? I seem to be having one now.

Well, actually, it’s more like a two-and-a-half way argument. About Doctor Who. As I’ve posted before, I’ve only begun watching it fairly recently, but for a while now, one part of my brain won’t shut up about it. It’s constantly thinking about various “awesome” parts of various episodes. Due to reverse-psychology, or something like it, the second part of my brain has decided that I shouldn’t watch a single episode of Doctor Who until the first part of my brain shuts up about it. I currently agree with the second part of my brain. The strategy seemed to be working, too – the first part of my brain has quieted down recently – until my parents were flipping through channels on the TV and I saw in the info about an episode of Ripley’s Believe it or Not “See the man with two hearts!” And now it’s started all over again. *groans*

IN my opinion, watching a show while you’re excited about it is more rewarding than trying to force yourself to be less excited and ends up dulling the experience. And liking Doctor Who is a good thing, why try to make yourself like it less?

Jadestone- It’s a sort of instinctive thing. I’m the sort of person whose instinctive reaction to “hurry up!” is to slow down. This is the first time the person yelling at me to “hurry up!” has been myself, so this is the odd result. I don’t think it has to do with liking it less, so much as not thinking about it 24/7. Eh, the second part of my brain got what it wanted at this point, so I’m going to start watching it again anyway.

      Agent Lightning – Wow.

RE: Textbook problems (Axa – that sounds extremely sucky. I’m sorry.) I opened my math textbook for the first time a few days ago so I could do my math homework, and BAM – all of the answers were written right next to the problems in blue. And when I say next to the problem, I mean literally NEXT to the problem – not hidden at the back of the book somewhere or something. Like, screw doing the actual problem, we’ll just give you the answer! LOL

But in more seriousness, it actually is fairly annoying as it appears like it would be a teacher’s edition but it doesn’t indicate that anywhere – on the cover, or in the title pages, etc, and it’s the exact same ISBN number as the kids who have the right textbook that doesn’t just throw the answers out there for you. I’ve told my teacher and my mom contacted the company, but STILL. Textbook problems are the worst. Except for when it means you have the answers, of course. ALL KNOWING? I think yes. (That’s going to be my new tag line.)

Other then that, so far high school is going swimmingly. I hope the same can be said for all of you and your school adventures. Stuff.

I can’t stand when it has the answers. Call me a nerd, but I feel like I’m cheating when I don’t do my work. (I wonder why…) At first when I read that I though you got it used, and someone had written the answers in blue ink. But… yeah, teacher’s edition… I’d try and get a new one.
On the subject of textbooks, the middle school loans all of ours to us for free. And I got a brand spanking new algebra textbook (we’re the first algebra class). Actually this is kind of a bad thing because then at the end of the year, any damages are your fault.

I agree with you. When I check the answers for my maths homework, I’m careful not to look at the ones for the problems I haven’t done.

And I’d rather have a slightly used book than a new one. We had new copies of an English novel this year, and mine got squashed in my bag so now there are creases down the front cover, which has made the plastic covering go weird. I’m amazed at the people who graffiti their textbooks IN PEN, when we have to write our names in the front and everything.

My cousin did something for French through Middlebury a while ago, and their programs are really well known. After the Renn Faire we all went to a ballroom dance at my school. I’d forgotten how much I’d missed those. I’d also forgotten how much I like tango is the best. So’s polka and swing. But this was the first dance of the year and, as is tradition, we’d hired a band to play. My professor came over to some friends and I and points out one of the musicians and tells us this guy has met Tolkien! Our reaction: !!!!

That was pretty great. We all got to talk to the guy and he shook our hands and such and was a really neat person to talk to in general.

Went to my first NCSU football game yesterday, which was pretty awesome! Afterward it was interesting though…

We thought we were going to smart by leaving the game early, so we set out for the bus. However, when we get there, the busdriver tells us that his bus was not for students, despite the fact that it was a Wolfline bus, which is the normal transit system for students. We were suspicious, but we followed his directions to catch a different bus that was supposedly in the opposite direction.

    So we walk.

    And we walk.

And we walk by tailgaters with nasty beer cans, trash, and puke thrown everywhere.

    And we walk faster.

We pass a group of policemen who seem to have no idea that there is a bus stop nearby.

By this time we’re walking along the highway heading into downtown Raleigh and we’re kind of mad because there obviously was not a bus stop. Essentially we have a really long walk ahead of us that involves major sketchy trudging along a highway at night with drunk guys in trucks driving past and yelling at us. So we walk until we reach a Wafflehouse. My friend calls her Dad who lives nearby and who is happy to give us a ride simply because he hasn’t seen his daughter in a while.

Have any of you ever been to Wafflehouse at night? It’s very sketchy. That’s all I can say.

And so the moral of this story? Don’t trust busdrivers. They are devious.

I found a nice big park (as in 1500 acres) that’s not too much of a drive away, so I went on a hike today. It’s a nice big forest and the path lies along a little river that you can see through the trees sometimes. It was more of a mountain biking path than a hiking path, but that’s fine. The bug level was very low, which was pleasing. The only other person I saw was a man with his dog, though there were some bikers on a big gravel trail that cuts through near the trailhead of the trail I was on. Naturally, I brought my ocarina, and after I had walked three or four miles I found a suitable log, sat down, and played it. It was very peaceful. I wonder how far the sound traveled–pretty far, I think; the air was fairly still today.

Anyway, my roommate and most of my other high school friends went back home for Labor Day weekend, so I’ve had some much-needed rest. I feel much less stressed out than I had been feeling. My sister and her boyfriend are coming out to visit tomorrow, so I’d better tidy up my room. And get some dinner before the only open food hall closes. (Apparently they think that the students that don’t go home over Labor Day weekend don’t need to eat much. Alas.)

All of the 28 relatives in my one story house just left… It feels weird, the house not being crowded to the limit.

Why is it everything goes wrong at the worst times? One of the bathrooms broke, leaving us with one shower and toilet for 32 people.

My aunt who used to work at NASA showed us a bunch of pictures from the Endeavour that showed a bunch of different engineers. It was cool to see all the people who worked on that.

I’m ashamed of how much paper I used to get a campfire started, but in my defense it had rained the night before and the wood was spare and soaking wet.

Happy Labor Day! The entire point of everyone coming over was to celebrate Labor Day, but they all left Labor Day morning… It seems odd.

One of my uncles who came over was all obsessed with our family genealogy. He is planning a huge family reunion with about 400 people coming to a city founded by one of our ancestors. He was literally falling asleep at the computer looking up relatives. He didn’t sleep much because he was so into finding out all of the family history- it was really crazy.

One from June 9th, 2011 was a playable string instrument and recording device for Les Paul’s 96th birthday. I notice that these all appeared globally (sometimes a doodle will only appear in relevant countries–like Fourth of July is only shown in the U.S.) I expect that more effort goes into the global ones–and I know that whenever the Google Doodle Maker thinks en can have some fun with a day, then en takes advantage.

Wait, you mean you really forgot?Or is that a figure of speech? Please tell me when you find something that could help a person learn/relearn, whatever the case may be; I never did to begin with, really; well, I did start recently, but I still don’t know much.
I think that, “Aside from helping people with their homework, or anything else they needed, she really didn’t know how to meet people. She didn’t feel like she was a shy person. She thought of herself as a take-charge sort of girl. And yet, somehow, if there wasn’t some request along the lines of “I can’t remember how to do long division” then it was just too awkward to go up to someone and say… what? She’d never been able to figure out what. And there didn’t seem to be a standard information sheet, which was ridiculous. The whole business of meeting people had never seemed sensible to her.
But let it be quite clear that Hermione Granger, sitting alone on the first day of school in one of the few cabins that had been empty, in the last car of the train, with the cabin door left open just in case anyone for any reason wanted to talk to her, was not sad, lonely, gloomy, depressed, despairing, or obsessing about her problems. She was, rather, rereading Hogwarts: A History for the third time and quite enjoying it, with only a faint tinge of annoyance in the back of her mind at the general unreasonableness of the world,” is the best way to put things, I think, if you just replace “Hermione Granger” with my name and “Hogwarts, A History” with a book that has actually been written.

French – Teacher seems nice/fun, but she speaks French a lot. Also, I currently have to sit on the couch because there’s not enough desks.
Potions Chemistry – Again, the teacher seems pretty cool. And my table group is nice, even if I don’t know them.

World History – My friends aren’t in this class either, so I have no one to make Hetalia references with. ;_; And there’s a lot of work, but it could be fun.

(They said in health class that regular physical activity improves concentration in school, that’s probably why I can never focus  )Then he asks me if I see pink elephants in the sky and I tell him no, they’re bunnies.
Then in band I get hyper off of Mussorgsky. We (the trombones) were playing Baba Yaga insanely loud and we got to Kiev and were like, “why stop here” and so it was like BOOM! overpowered by trombones BOOOOM BOOOM BUM DUM DE DUM DUM and at the end we started laughing so hard, I was red in the face and probably looked so stupid but hahaha that was just EPIC. In almost a fail sort of way since the band director was like “that was a bit too loud, trombones” and they probably heard us over in home ec and went “what the cake” and hahahahaha that was just so much fun.
Then advanced jazz combo and I IMPROVISED ON A TWELVE BAR BLUES AND OUTLINED CHORD CHANGES.
Then I went home and bought a tenor saxophone. The guy said the mouthpiece it came with was a Vandoren but it was a Selmer C*! In case you don’t know what that is, it’s like a really nice mouthpiece that costs like a hundred and fifty bucks.

*sigh* The people up in the school board/school seem to have forgotten that middle school is for sixth through eighth graders. I think what they’re looking for is the elementary school.
For the record, sixth through eighth graders do not enjoy being treated like they’re eight years old, nor having dumb acronyms, “behavior cards”, and a substitute for In School Suspension that’s so wet-noodle-y that I think I’d actually enjoy it. (The ISS teacher got moved to Home Ec, which is called Life Skills because Home Ec is what they should call it. :| )
Plus the principal isn’t doing any “come in and talk to the principal” coffees for the parents this year, so guess who gets to be bombarded with questions about PTA and bus seating and who knows what by their over-involved PTA band mom!
Eventually the students will get fed up, hold a revolt, and in the process break all of the dumb rules.
Moral: Rules do not need to be presented on a platter with little sprigs of parsley and just enough basil and a pesto sauce with relaxing classical music playing in the background and fancy diamond chandeliers and candlelight and silk tablecloths and cloth napkins and three different forks and you show up to the thing wearing a ten thousand dollar outfit and all the chairs are made of solid gold and the floor is a fancy hardwood and all the forks are solid gold too and the chef is the world’s most renowned chef and will have biographies written about him becauseTHEY’RE STILL RULES.
Other than that, school’s going great. :D I’m really liking my teachers.

WARNING: Extremely incoherant post ahead. Things have been… eventful.
I have learned how to write faster than a leaf moves when there is no wind! (They do move, you know; we just don’t see it). It’s a miracle. No, really. I’m absolutely overjoyed; this has been a major problem for me since kindergarten. Back then, everyone said it would go away in a year or 2 back then, but it never did, and it was just unbearable, and I’d given up, and YAY!
But my squish is moving. She is A) The second squish I’ve had on someone I actually know IRL, B) The only IRL squish I ever had a chance of ever becoming friends with, and C) This isn’t somethingh she is, but I had no idea until the last day I got to see her. I got her phone number, so normally since it’s a squish and not a crush it wouldn’t make that much a difference, but it does because A) I don’t have any close friends IRL right now, B) I don’t have many acquaintances IRL right now, C) She’s the only person I’ve ever met who I had a lot in common with and thought I’d ever get to spend much time with in the long term IRL, D) I had no idea, E) With the IRL friends I’ve had, when we visit each other, we always get bored because we can never find anything we both want to do, and I could tell this would happen with her, and most importantly F) The things we have in common are things that are much easier to talk about in the same place; she ‘s a naturalist like me and it’s simpler when you live with the same organisms, and she’s going to another state.
And I caught a cold, but I healed very quickly.
And my history teacher is ill, too, and the substitute had a real slave collar used when there were slaves in America. She let us HOLD it. Hold it! I couldn’t believe it. I especially couldn’t believe how mild everyone else’s reactions were. And there was a chain atteched, and it was so short and it was just horrible and it was right there.
Yet I STILL haven’t gotten into Pottermore. Ugh. It’s… what? The 8th? *checks* The ninth. But Methods of Rationality, which I’d given up on, is being updated every 3 days, and SQUEEE! And there was a book at my school library with a tardigrade section.

Your vision: Were you sitting with your head lower than your feet–possibly in the dark or with your eyes closed–before standing up quickly? If you were in the dark, did you go into a lighted area? I ask because those things, especially in combination, can affect my vision briefly. (I get pretty pinkish polka-dots overlapping with pale green dots sometimes.)

I have been told that color flashing in vision can also be a fore-symptom of migraine headaches–I hope that’s not the case.

Your weather: I’m glad nothing worse than the fallen tree resulted! I’m used to humidity and heat before a rain, and the purple sky doesn’t sound very odd to me, but the wind would have been concerning.

I’m sorry, I don’t understand part of that. Did the colors happen while you were lying down or after you got up? If you did get up, then it’s due to the blood pressure, as Enc said. I asked about the head-higher-than-feet position because that nearly always causes it in me. It can happen when I’ve simply been flat, but only rarely, so I didn’t think of it before.

If you were still on the ground, then I don’t know.

The sky I’m acquainted with gets wispy purple streaks sometimes when the sun is setting–a pale, slightly red-tinged purple.

It was written by Frank Ticheli to commemorate Columbine, but I think that the themes it represents are intimately relevant to the events of September 11. Here’s the description on YouTube:

“An American Elegy by Frank Ticheli is, above all, an expression of hope. It was composed in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, and to honor the survivors. It is offered as a tribute to their great strength and courage in the face of a terrible tragedy. Frank Ticheli hopes the work can also serve as one reminder of how fragile and precious life is and how intimately connected we all are as human beings.”

So yeah, tomorrow is… the anniversary, but I don’t want to talk about that just now.

Today, since it was absolutely beautiful here in Boston, I decided to cross the river and check out MIT. Walking alongside the Charles and seeing the light sparkling on the water and the occasional boat going by was heavenly. And they don’t have as many big trees on their side, so I had this magnificent unobstructed view of the Boston skyline and the BU campus.

The MIT campus is more suburban in feel than ours, because the buildings are smaller and more spaced out between athletic fields, and a lot of them are in converted warehouses and factories. It felt a lot like Roosevelt Island, actually.

So I found their student union and checked out their bookstore, and I started reading a book about the changing portrayals of science and scientists in movies, but the store had to close soon, so I left. I found what I guess was the main building and they had a little gallery of artifacts related to famous alumni. I didn’t see any Feynman stuff, but they had a plaque Ron McNair had presented to the school after his first mission with a flown school flag. The little sign said a building at the school had been named for him in his memory, so… MUST FIND!

I got a map at the entrance and looked up where the McNair Building was… which turned out to be not too far away from Harvard Square, where I was then. (Yeah, Harvard Square is at MIT. If it was by the BU Bridge, we could have 3 school names for the price of 1, but it’s not.)

I found the building, and the door was locked, but I could see the inscription inside and a photo of McNair in his flightsuit. (Sadly, I didn’t have my camera with me.)

After that, I was headed back when I saw some people demonstrating swordfighting on the soccer field, and they invited me to watch the demonstration, so I did. It was great, I learned a lot and the two presenters were really funny. And they have lessons!

When the presentation was over, I headed back across the bridge and saw the lovely gibbous moon rising over Warren Towers. All in all, a wonderful day.

    Nothing’s ever built to last.

We tell ourselves it is. We tell ourselves what we build and what we do will stand on Earth forever, a mark of our passing, a reminder we were here. We try, in all the impossible, brilliant ways humans try, to live forever, and we lie and act and pretend and tell stories to keep ourselves believing it, and when all the beautiful shining things we build fall to the ground, we do what humans do: we build them back up again. Castles in the sand.

I like the look of the memorial, especially the fountain flowing into a hole where the base of one of the towers was.

I was watching a bit of the ceremony at ground zero, and someone speaking quoted a bit of Shakespeare that really hit me hard:

“Your cause of sorrow must not be measured by his worth, for then it hath no end.”

My pastor also gave a provocative comment where she asked us to imagine what might have happened instead of charging into war, we asked the leaders of the countries where the terrorists were based for help to root them out, instead of virtually invading their homeland.

I was six, but I don’t remember knowing anything about it until several anniversaries had gone by. It’s so strange following all of the coverage today, on the tenth of those, especially when every account seems to have this same notion of history being divided into a “before” and an “after”, with the 9/11 tragedy as the turning point. My personal history has no “before” to refer to, to see how the world has changed. We’ve always had to get to the airport hours early to go through security. We’ve always been at war in the Middle East. Pictures from New York have always had this skyline. Today my dad was showing me a photo album from his youth for a completely different reason, but it happened to include photographs from a family trip that they took to New York. In almost every picture, there were the twin towers – in the foreground, in the background, from below. It was such a shock to realize that they were just a part of the landscape then, marvels of engineering but ordinary skyscrapers still. They’ve taken on so much more meaning now. When I visited New York City for the first time this summer, I was happy to see the rebuilding at Ground Zero. I like the reflecting pools and the other symbolism. I’m happy that we’re able to rebuild and show resilience without forgetting. There have been lots of stories and first-person accounts in the news today, and it’s kind of overwhelming. I know I’ll never understand what it was like to be there, but I feel sad and confused and weary all the same. Am I allowed to say “Always Remember” if I don’t remember the day or the “before” or where I was when it happened? What is it like for kids who weren’t even born then? Some of them are almost 10 years old already, plenty old enough to be aware of the anniversary. It’s an odd day of grieving and memories and rebuilding, and as I think this post shows, I’m not quite sure how to respond to it on an personal level.

I was six and living in Scotland then. I don’t remember much about the attacks – I think because we weren’t in the country, it wasn’t so much of a big deal. I would say that the rest of the world noticed what was going on in America, but didn’t have much of an emotional connection. I remember my parents telling me what had happened, but I don’t remember associating much significance with the towers falling – I was more worried about the biological weapons that my parents had talked about.
It wasn’t until recently – in the last year or so – that I started to realize why Americans care so much about 9/11. Before then I saw it as tragic – horrific – but people die every day. Now I think I understand. I still don’t feel the emotional side of it like so many Americans seem to do, but I finally understand the full significance of the attacks, and what happened afterwards.
Today I’m not remembering the towers falling, because I have no memories of that. I’m remembering the effects of 9/11, and how it has changed our world. I’m remembering how America was turned upside down. I’m remembering the way we responded – both the good and the bad. But mostly I’m remembering the people who died, and the people who gave their lives trying to save others. I have no memories of them, but I will never forget them.

I was eight. I remember it perfectly well–so many students being picked up early, me not having any clue what was happening, and suggesting that a plague had started…and then the principal calling the entire school into the cafeterium and telling us the news. Something to the effect of, “Guys, a couple of planes have crashed into the twin towers. They think Muslims did it. Since we’re a Muslim school, we’ve received bomb threats and are sending everyone home early.”

This is my main memory of 9/11. Watching footage of the towers crash came later. It’s always the fear I felt when suddenly my school didn’t seem safe anymore.

Looking back on it, this may not have been the best decade to grow up Muslim in America. But ten years later, a lot of the bad feeling has…I don’t know how to put it. Not as much blame going around, I guess.

I spent the afternoon with a volunteer organization called Medshare. It donates unused medical supplies that are past their expiration date to developing countries. My college organized the trip. We had a pretty good turnout. At the end we had this discussion group where we talked about the meaning of the day and everything, and the general consensus seemed to be that we’re moving on. And that’s a good thing, I guess. It’s healing.

The imam from the local mosque came to UU today to talk about how it was for him after 9/11- how he couldn’t walk down the street without people shouting at him, how members of his congregation came to him in the days after the attacks and told him that they were afraid to go outside, afraid to go shopping, afraid to come to services. How he went to a memorial service for his best friend, who was on flight 93, and wasn’t even allowed in the cemetery..

And that was when I started crying. I have a haze of dim memories from before the attacks- of smiling people in airport lines, of the New York skyline with the twin towers rising out of it, of being excited about September 11th because I was going to have my birthday party then.

I don’t remember the attacks. I remember my mother coming in when we were cutting the cake and telling everyone to be quiet and turning the radio on. I remember my preschool teacher picking up the phone in class and screaming and running out of the room. She never came back. Her brother worked in the Trade Center.

And I remember the years after the attacks- the glares I got at school because I was different, the cars pulling over and the grownups yelling at me to “go back to your own country,” the TSA pulling me out of the line with my parents and making me walk through the X-ray machine alone while all the other kids got to go through with their parents.

For the longest time, I didn’t understand why people made a big deal about the attacks. I thought it was sad, but I couldn’t fathom why people cried so much, why they showed so many documentaries in school, why anyone would be so scared to fly.

But I think I do understand. That day changed each and every one of our lives. Changed the way our county was run. Changed the entire world. I wasn’t anywhere near the towers that day, but it could just as easily have been me.

And that, at least, is my two cents. I’ve seen the billboards, the postings, the signs, telling us to “Never Forget.” I don’t think anyone ever will.

I was just about to turn two when 9/11 happened, and don’t remember anything. My mother, however, was home and she turned on the TV. It happened to be on a news station, and they were covering it. She ran to the phone and told my dad to come home, because he works in a tall building. Then she went and got me and, well…life went on.

It’s only now, when I see all the coverage again and the people crying and hear stories of brave people going back that it hits me. I am an emotional rock: really, I rarely cry at anything. But fishi, that video made me cry.

Sadly, every Muslim in the airport is under scrutiny from me, but I try to keep it to myself…I mean, I don’t want to be prejudiced, but it just happens. Also, I’m not a very religious person, so I’ll just end by saying forgive, but don’t forget.

I was back in Vienna, starting 1st grade. I heard about what was going on and saw the footage on the news, but I didn’t really understand what was going on. I was just sad that someone had destroyed those nice towers that I’d visited less than a month before. There was some brief panic in the family because my godfather worked for one of the companies with their offices in the second tower, even then I wasn’t really worried. The idea that something happen to me or my family was just too abstract for me.

What did freak me out was when the war started- all I knew about wars was that when I asked my grandmother about her childhood, the stories usually ended with “and then the war came.” and that wasn’t appropriate for little girls’ bedtime stories. Of course, this made me want to know about it even more. All I knew was that everyone was unhappy, buildings were destroyed by bombs and then everyone ran out of food and stuff. I was afraid that that would happen to America, but eventually concluded that there wasn’t really a war, at least not a real one. People didn’t look or act like they were having bombs dropped on other people’s homes and didn’t seem to be worried about people dropping bombs on their homes, at least not more people than usual. So I tried to watch the news, but it was at my bedtime so all I knew that it was somehow about people with tanks driving around in deserts. Eventually, I just gave up and figured that it was a grown-up thing. Planes were so cool anyway that I didn’t really mind security, and no-one ever stopped a family of four with two cute little blond girls.

Now that I’m older, I do understand it more, but I’m still pretty callous about it. I guess it’s because I was traveling so much that countries just came and went. I knew my ancestors had left and/or been kicked out of various countries before. The idea that one of them was vulnerable or that governments could be toppled wasn’t really a surprise to me. Yep, I know I’m not very patriotic. Still, I mourn the people who died that day.

Sweet Mimi, so many posts I cannot catch up WHAT IS THIS?

    Anyway.
    Here’s the important stuff:
    I’m still alive.

The past week has been rough, but I’m hoping this one will be better. My spirit grandmother is sick, so I drove up to WV to visit her this weekend. It was wonderful to see her again, it’d been far too long.
I’m still somewhat behind on homework, so I’m going to be getting on that soon. I turned in an essay an hour late. Hopefully it’s okay. Blargh. Other than this I’ve been doing pretty well at this school thing. Aside from turning into a hermit because of crazy business. But that’s okay.

I’m going to have an extra three hours every night now, because the musical I was in, Little Shop of Horrors, was cancelled due to a problem with the rights. I’m trying to decide if I want to audition for the play they’re doing instead now, because it sounds good, but at the same time I’m glad for the extra time that I’d otherwise be in rehearsals. Also it’s a very small cast, and since I have so little experience (read: none) I don’t know if it’d be a good introduction for me. Alas. I’ll definitely audition for something again though, I still want to be involved.

    Ah well.

For now I need to do homework though.

I would have posted this yesterday, but I couldn’t.

Ten years ago, I was five and in first grade (because of my birthmonth, I start the school year young). I lived in California, and that’s the other side of the country. Cake, it’s the other side of the continent. There was no panic, and I didn’t think my teacher looked particularly upset (but then she was generally pretty stoic). She didn’t give much detail, just asked for a moment of silence. I assumed it was for something that had happened a really long time ago. I vaguely understood that we were honoring the people who died in some building that got bombed. I had now idea what building, or by who. Just that it was some building in New York. I couldn’t bring myself to deep emotion over some building and people when I didn’t even know its name or who they were. In retrospect, it was nice that this lack of knowledge on not just my own part meant that nobody in my school was prejudiced against for it. I’ve always believed racism to be the lowest form of cruel idiocy. But what I think the saddest part is, is that I didn’t even find out exactly what had happened for a year or two, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned the year it had happened. To me, 9/11 was just a date. I know better now.

        • True. I especially have a problem with people who use the event for political grandstanding, whatever their cause. The deeper one’s personal loss, the more difficult such bombast must be to hear. (I know for myself, anyway, that whenever death strikes close to home, my tolerance for cheap rhetoric approaches zero.)

That said, I do believe the comments here on MuseBlog are legitimate attempts to work through what the events mean to the individuals. I suspect it’s especially tricky to figure that out for those who have no conscious memory or hazy recollections at best — this huge event so freighted with emotions for many of the adults around them — that they’re trying to find some foothold of understanding. Writing is one way to test oneself in working out emotional truths. In some respects, that’s much easier for those of us who felt the shock of loss firsthand, who lost friends or family or felt the relief of welcoming a survivor home, who have rich memories of the places that were struck, or in some other way experienced a direct connection with what happened that day. For us, it’s very concrete, and how we find meaning from it may be wrenching in many cases but at least the pathway is relatively straightforward. For those who know it more as an abstraction, the pathway may be much harder to see. They have to sort out for themselves what they really think and feel and what they believe they ought to be thinking and feeling. And MuseBlog can certainly be a useful place to begin that sorting.

Bear in mind, too, that often times genuinely heartfelt responses can sound melodramatic when we try to express them in words. (And that can be true at any age.)

I remember the day it happened, actually — my family went on a picnic at a wildlife rehabilitation center and fed grapes to an eagle. I had no knowledge whatsoever of the event until at least five or six years later. This is what being a sheltered child in a household with no media exposure is like.
At this point, it seems like a bit late for me to try and figure out my emotions about it. I mean, okay, it was a horrible event and a bunch of people died, but a lot of other terrible and senseless events which resulted in a bunch of people dying have happened before and since, and it seems just a wee bit hypocritical to keep making such a *huge fricking deal* out of this one each year just because it happened here instead of somewhere else.

Talking helps, but there was never any point at school or with my family where we did that. Writing helps too, and maybe a journal would have been a more appropriate place for this, but it feels like the kind of anniversary that is too big for any one person to experience. It’s one of those moments in time that we all shared in some form or another; it feels right to still be sharing now. Does that make any sense? I do see where you’re coming from, though.

My partner, a good friend and I, found all the points but couldn’t find the markers we were supposed to take back with us to prove we’d been there. Except the two farthest ones. We showed up late to the group at the end, covered in flower petals and mud (we decided to not use trails anymore) and singing sea shanties.
Tomorrow we’re going to go wade through a river!

Axa, that is SO AWESOME that you’re going to the TED conference! I am super excited for you! *squees, hugs, etc.*

I had an awesome day. It’s turned into fall here, so I got to wear a sweater all day, which just makes me so happy. I ate breakfast, got hot chocolate and sat outside and read my anthropology book before class, got it all done in perfect time, was cool with the chill air and breeze, but warm with my lovely wool sweater and cocoa. It was glorious. Class was good, then in my next class I found out I did really well on yesterday’s quiz. Kevin hands out prizes to whoever gets the highest score, which was me today. I got a “lucky buckeye” from down by the river.
Then after that class I got a text from my roommate, who works at the post office, saying that I had two packages. So I went to pick them up, obviously. One was a t-shirt of the Pirate Invasion festival I played at just before coming here, and the other was a care package from my mom. I had to go to lunch, so I didn’t open all of it right then, but I found a pair of lovely blue and green earrings that matched what I was wearing. So I wore them for the rest of the day. They’re quite pretty and I like them a lot. My mom has good taste in earrings. :) The line at the cafeteria was short, so I got my food fast and was able to get to work on time. Work is generally more relaxed on Fridays anyway, so we went and painted and goofed around and visited, and then some of my friends came by and hung out while I painted and helped us move a ladder and it was all fun. Then I moved my desk and cleaned my side of the room, so I have more space and it’s awesome.
Then I spun poi with Alex and played fiddle tunes until my fingers were too cold to keep going. Now I’m back in my room and I’m thinking to go to bed early. Maybe I’ll read a short story first though.
I have some homework, but not much. I need to do some preliminary research for one of my classes, and I need to catch up on my sound journal for another (5 entries…ugh), but it’s not hugely pressing RIGHT NOW, so I’m not stressing.
Tomorrow I’m doing service hours for another class, and it should be fun and interesting. Paul is going as well, and he’s pretty cool. I’m looking forward to getting to know him better. Then Will and Rebecca and I need to get together and discuss a performance piece based on our combined research for Monday. But I think we’re doing that Sunday.

Anyway, if you managed to read all that, congratulations.
Also, I finally got to go contra dancing again. It was awesome fun. I’m so happy that there are weekly contras here.
I’m just mostly happy in general here, really.
It is somewhat annoying to be stuck in “the bubble” as my school is often referred to, but as far as places to be stuck go, it’s not at all a bad one.

Anyway, this time I watched it with decent ambient light and a cartoon playing on a TV in the same room. Which seriously detracted from the terror of the experience. Darn. I won’t make that mistake again.

There is one thing though. The cartoon my little brother was watching had gone to another episode when I got to the end of The Doctor Dances. It was an episode with a little duckling whose big thing that it says every three seconds is calling for its mommy. Well, THAT didn’t detract from the terror, I’ll say!
