sorry, twas my second first post *danceas the dance of joy*. and no, i don’t have my muse to discus with yall yet. i literaly just got my september muse.
We recently got our September Muse as well.
But I do know there’s an article about speaking to the dead and brains…from the Kokon conference.
gah! my actual first post got eaten!
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Did E2MB write a letter to Muse this month? I know Sobriquet did.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Was that Margaret’s question for the Q&A? I know she lives in NY…
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
The other I article was really cool, and that ducting thing was awesome. (My toaster is talking to me!)
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
At least now we have an explanation of the page-difference. But even so, that didn’t force them to make it smaller on the sides. That shows they are having money “issues”…
I haven’t done my thorough reading yet (I have a whole system), but the brains and talking to the dead articles were cool.
Sometimes I hear funny sounds in my house, especially at night, but I can’t tell if it’s mice, my dog, creaky old beams, or if my house really is haunted!
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
The explanation was that the eight “lost” pages were actually eight pages of ads. You could check back issues to see how many pages of ads they actually ran.

8- the inside cover, back inside, back outside. last october.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
8-Yeah, I read that, too, but I don’t remember there being that many ads, do you? That’s partly why I liked Muse. Well, no ads is even better I guess. Still, it seems like some sort of a sneeky way of making us happy with the smaller magazine!
The inch or so on two sides that went is disturbing still. I suppose it’s all in the postage ocsts as you said earlier.
Phooey. I hope they don’t try to make it even smaller!
I don’t think they would make it smaller – it’s about as small as a “standard-size” magazine would get, I think. But I have noticed that things have gotten a lot more compressed – there just doesn’t seem to be as much “empty space” as there used to be. They did talk a bit about “going green,” but still…
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Gosh. Posting that makes me feel like I’m a horrible criminal. Anyway….
The Ko&Co was really creepy. I didn’t get it at ALL. Sobriquet’s letter got in. It was written like a true MuseBlogger.
GOING GREEN? Bull.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Ack! I keep forgetting to put the “Spoiler” thing before my posts. Good thing there wasn’t anything spoiler-ish in that post.
*sigh*
The shrinkage on the sides of the magazine is an industry-wide trend. Many other magazines and newspapers have also chopped off their edges recently — even the New York Times.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Ok i love the ghosts article. I’ve been trying to spiritually communicate for a long time and I can be sure that ghosts exist. My house is haunted. I’ve met the ghost of my grandfather and he looks EXACTLY like him. It wuz scary, but ghosts are real. Don’t beleive me? Think I’m MAD persay? Well I’m not mad. Just overly superstitious.

It’s funny, I was just thinking about the falling- sleep thingy in the Q+A when I received the issue. It is scary.

It’s funny how Muse put the ghost hunting article with the sound effects article because it is true that sounds sound different in real life than on camera, which might be a possible explination for the ghost- on- tape idea.
This thread has much less posts than one would assume.

Did no one notice E2MB’s letter? At least I think it’s E2MB’s. David M., age 12, California? Angry about shrinking Muse (but who isn’t?) Sounds like good ol’ davidude. I’m glad he can still write to Muse, even if he can’t come on the blog a lot.
Congrats, Sobriquet and E2MB!
The ad excuse is pathetic. I’ve counted. I could only find 3.
It was good. And short. It seemed even smaller than the past two issues!
I may enter the contest. Hectare la Kiwi and all that…
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
Alice (23) – I wouldn’t really call it an ad excuse…they were just explaining what truly happened…
(24) If I understand correctly, Alice said that she checked and it isn’t what happened.
21-Yeah, good thing you posted the SPOILER warning, that post was so informative about the last issue.
I haven’t actually finished the whole issue yet, I plan to tonight. Although I was suspicious David, age 12, California was E2MB, I was surprised he didn’t post about MuseBlog. Sobriquet, too. Hello?? ADVERTIZING! *glares*
Anyway, I counted ads in the non-shortened issue, and there were, like, two. One on the inside and one on the back cover, which dosn’t count.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
25 (Robert) – Yes, I know that there weren’t many advertisements, but I don’t think Muse would lie about why they had the 8 pages. I’m sure they were telling the truth, and it wasn’t meant to be a flimsy excuse…
SPOILER! OCTOBER MUSE! SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER! OCTOBER MUSE!

Hmmm. This one seems even smaller than the September one. It was very good though. Now I’ll be listening for elephants every time I watch a movie.

I did the math yesterday. There were no ads outside of the cover (including the inside cover and the back cover) in either the October 2007 issue or the February 2007 issue. The February issue had 6 articles, as opposed to the October issue which had 4 articles. The average article length in the February issue was 7 2/3 pages (the nice, spacious pages), and the average length in the October issue was 7 3/4 pages (the small pages). The February issue also had a two page-long math page, while the October issue’s math page was only one page.

I liked the Q&A, especially the one Robert answered. That happens to me too. But ususally I wake up after the thud.
Yeah… I liked the light-saber sound.

SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I always wondered about that sensation, lying in bed, but I thought it was just my weirdness.
The only ads that I remember were the smarties (The American kind) ones, long ago. So did they just want to have a better, shorter excuse? *dramatic voice* What is the magazine industry hiding from us? No, not really.
And they didn’t do anything with the editor’s names in the front, like they usually do… did they?
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
curious and questioning’s complete issue overview and reactions:
I liked the issue, overall, but I am somewhat uncertain as to the truth of the missing pages. And all the Muses in my room are recent, changed ones, so I can’t compare now. How’s the font size?
The ghost article was okay. Not boring, not the most interesting in the issue. Wasn’t there an article forever ago about Houdini’s efforts to contact the dead? This was a different style of speaking to ghosts, but still…
The brain one was a typical Muse article. “‘What happens when the rhinocerous dies? I want the brain. But will they give it to me? No, Shamu will probably get a burial or something.'”
I liked the avatar article. It made me think, also, about my online alter-ego c+q (as compared to Annie). It raises interesting questions. I’m entering the contest.
The sound article was good, too. Now I have a response for when people trying to duplicate the Chewbacca noise get too annoying.
I’m going to assume the letter was Margaret’s and congratulate her. Congratulations also go to Sobriquet for her letter.
The Mystic Puzzle was interesting. And now, someday when I install on this computer and go back to playing Myst, I can get that much farther.
I wonder which age the book leads to.
I did not enter the origami contest because my folding skills are limited to following instructions. I am impressed.
The last page was ironic and funny. The title made me think of a book I had to take notes on this summer, though. (Why, Chinua Achebe, why?)

If anyone could find a picture of the “Donner Party Picnic Grounds” sign it would make me a very happy person.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I was going to enter the origami contest, because I’m obsessed with origami…but I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, so I have about a dozen half-made origami Kokopellis in my room. I spent too much time making them perfect and never got around to sending them in
I liked the cover of the magazine, though. All the pictures with the hand-drawn microphones and speakers and such are really funny! It does make the subtitle “The magazine of life, the universe, and pie throwing” a bit hard to read, though.
I liked the “Quidditch in Space” false fact – it was really funny! I also liked the “Mystery Hexagon” – it was really interesting.
I feel really bad for the Muse that had to go under water – it was a cool idea, but I don’t think I would ever take a Muse underwater…
It was the origami one, too!
Also, congratulations to Sobriquet and (E2MB?) for their letters!!
And congratulations to Margaret for her science question – I think it had to be hers, because her last name starts with an L, and she lives in New York. I liked the question, and the answer! I think all teachers should know about this terrible illness…and take a step to help fix it! *hint*
I don’t really fully understand the Muse contest, but I’ll do my best and send something in anyway
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
27- Probably what happened was that they had to keep eight pages for ads, but they didn’t get enough ads and therefore had to fill it up with other stuff.
31- I noticed that too!
(35, 27) That sounds plausible. The problem is that when you fill magazine pages with ads, other companies pay you for them (or you give your own company some free advertising). To fill the pages with non-ads, however, you have to pay writers and artists, so money goes out instead of coming in. You also have to buy the paper and pay to have things printed on it. At eight pages per copy, about 45,000 copies of each issue, and nine issues a year, that adds up.
Who is Hectare la Kiwi?
37- My alter ego, of course.
SPOILER SPOILER OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
I got around to discussing the new muse with my friend who reads Muse today. Here are our thoughts:
the EVP article: We thought it was very interesting. We agreed that if we taped the noise on the school’s playground during recess, we’d be more likely to hear middleschoolers than ghosts.
the sound effects article: We say that we will listen to the next movie we see much more carefully. I also wondered what weird sounds I missed when I watched The Sound of Music the night before my Muse came.
the Q & A: I have never experienced the falling sensation, but my friend has. She says that she always thought that it was just something weird about her.
generally: She says that she will start posting on MuseBlog next time she can get Internet access. She may be posting under the name François or something similar.
SPOILERS SPOILERS (KIND OF)
You are right, that was my letter they printed! I feel so privelaged to have my letter printed in the magazine!
And finally the mystery of the missing pages is solved! The only ads I remember are the Nesquik and smarties ads.
I ommitted a long part of this post that I typed before I realized that it was identical to what people have already stated above. So now I click submit.
11 – That would be my absolute worst nightmare. (Muse being even smaller than it is now, that is.)
SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER, SPOILER,MAJOR SPOILER, OCTOBER MUSE SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Muse but honestly I didn’t know that Muse had shrunk until it was mentioned in the fan mail section. Also that ghost article is really cool, so naturaly it scared me silly.

I liked the sound article better than many of the recent ones. The rest were just average.

The sound one was a classic–original and interesting.(In my opinion). And I truly didn’t notice that Muse had shrunk either, at first.
39-Hey! I did NOT say that I thought that I was the only person who had those weird falling sensations. Just ask my parents they have them too!
Soon Muse will be only 10 pages long… and 6 inches by 4 inches… with no Bo’s Page or Kokopelli and Company or any extras… and only one article.. and really small print…
I’m gonna stop, ’cause I’m freaking myself out.
I just had another one of those falling things last night… But I knew what they were, thanks to Muse! *Is content*
