Seriously Awesome Comics

Kagcomix (who else?) says:

“There are really awesome artists from North America and Europe who toil forever on seriously awesome comics. i’d just like to give them some recognition, y’know. I’m talking about comics from Oni Press and things like that, stuff that isn’t totaly branded (and there’s a lot of non-branded or little known stuff). so please GAPAs’, can we give it a try?”

There are already threads devoted to manga, so please stick to non-manga comics on this one.

sorry, I just wanted to snag the first post. Okay as some people may recall, one of my favrite artists is Bryan Lee O’Malley the author of Scott Pilgrim vol1-3(4comes out nov.7), Lost At Sea and worked on Hopless Savages vol2 ground Zero. he is soooo awesome. please check out his work! He is married to hope larson(gray horses) whose work has sooo much soul. I also adore Reina Telgemeir(what ever her last name is) who did the BSC comics. And Rebecca Kratz is way cool. (sorry, i’m trying to think of synonyms for awesome). I simply adore Mark Oakley, who self publishes his comics. and the guy who does scary go round is cool too.

Get Fuzzy = hilarious. I have three anthologies, and I fall to pieces laughing every time I reread them. Genius work. I don’t really read them in the paper (We only get the Sunday Globe), but my books are funny enough. I have to admit, though, most of the more recent strips that were in the papers weren’t really that good, but some of them are real gems.

10 – penny arcade is okay

11 – ctrl-alt-del used to be good but then it got boring and unfunny

17 – dinosaur comics is awesome

19 – my issue with spiderman is that while i love spidey, i can’t stand peter parker. and the marvel vs dc debate is really dumb

20 – all the “normal” heroes come from dc? if anything, i’d say it’s the opposite

23, 24 – i dislike dilbert. just don’t find it that funny. get fuzzy is fantastic though

28 – calvin and hobbes is the best thing

    29 – pointless partisanship. disapprove.

51 – disagree! iron man, x-men, thor, there are plenty of great marvel superheroes

53 – yeah superman is pretty lame

54 – okay that’s just wrong. there is no way in which batman is a loser. and there is absolutely no conceivable universe in which robin is in any way cooler than batman. that’s just insanity.

55 – are you kidding? batman has some of the best villains in comic history! the joker’s character alone should be villain enough to completely refute that statement

56 – lizzie i agree with basically all of those :D

57 – bone is amazing. seriously, it’s great. plus, the author lives in columbus! the comic library at OSU has almost all of his original sketches/pages, i got to see some of them, it was really cool

    58 – scarygoround was awesome

64 – yeah i dislike robin as well. he’s irritating. batman is awesome

69 – yes because clearly you can only enjoy marvel, dc, or indie comics. there’s no possible way to appreciate any mix of the three

84 – order of the stick is fantastic

96 – not exactly. there are collected volumes of comic books that look about the same, but technically a graphic novel is a complete story in comic form. it’s basically the difference between a television show and a movie.

webcomics: i’ve read basically all the major webcomics (and some of the more obscure ones) at various points, but the only ones i still stick with are dinosaur comics, xkcd, questionable content, and occasionally sam and fuzzy and wigu

comic books: in terms of superheroes i like x-men, batman, iron man, spiderman is okay sometimes (i don’t like peter parker)

other comic books/graphic novels i enjoy are bone, sandman, alan moore generally, scott pilgrim, the serenity comics, etc.

another fun fact about bone, a bunch of the characters appeared in a (pre-bone) comic strip written by smith that ran in my school newspaper (yeah OSU!)

    Okay, Homestuck.
I finally started reading it because it’s pretty much all any of my friends talk about when they’re together, and I’m tired of not understanding a word they say.
Actually, I started ages ago, and I stopped really quickly because I got bored with just watching a boy going around and looking for funny things to do with objects, even though it was really obvious that other things were going to happen later that were really different.
I started it up again just now, though, and right now John and TentacleTherapist (who is pretty awesome) are playing Sburb… and I’m confused already.
It seems that playing a video game is moving around the actual objects in John’s house. Is that correct? Did I miss an explanation or a handwaving or something? Or is this one of those things everyone says will make sense later? It’s just that I’ve never heard anyone express confusion so early on.

Then again, they also store things on Captchalogue cards, and that was true even before they started playing Sburb. But still… That was established as how that universe seemed to work early on (although in retrospect, John seemed not to understand quite how it worked, which is odd–but maybe that was just him being clueless). This just seemed completely out-of-the-blue.

In between classes, just checked to see if there was an upd8 and oh my god Terezi has eyeballs. I’m also inclined to believe it was Aranea, but I’m not excluding the possibility of Gamzee-related shenanigans. I seriously want to know what the cake is up with him. I don’t hate him exactly, I just don’t trust him at all. He keeps on popping up in places he shouldn’t…

At least Terezi isn’t dead. I saw that theory a lot when people speculated why she was hiding her eyes. But if we’re going by that as a measure of when the eye-healing occurred, then that means that she hasn’t been blind for a year now and nobody noticed till now? It’s been six kids stuck on a meteor passing through the occasional dreambubble but somehow they all manage to stay so ridiculously out of touch that even major things like this and romantic breakups go relatively unnoticed by their friends? I mean, from a meta point of view, they couldn’t find out what was happening between intermissions because then we wouldn’t know what was going on but still. That is a serious level of detachment right there.

Also, if Caliborn’s class and aspect is the Lord of Time does that make him a Time Lord? (And he wears a bow tie) And if Calliope is the Muse of Space does that make her Urania? (Although of course we mustn’t forget that Calliope was the name of one of the original Greek Muses).

I don’t hink that it’s really a sad ending–it’s the moment when characters fall to their lowest depths right before they make an amazing comeback. Same with Terezi. Regarding Rose and Roxy–I think that’s really ironic and sad that Roxy cleaned up her problems with alcoholism in part to prepare for meeting her mom, and there Rose is developing alcoholism for practically the same reasons Roxy did. It’s a nice reflection, only we’re watching the process in reverse.

Also, given Kanaya’s expression in this past update, I think that ship might be ending soon. I mean, Kanaya admired Rose’s snark and witty banter. And now she’s actin like…like John did in during her first pesterlog with Rose, which we know didn’t impress Kanaya. I’m not super-attached to a lot of ships–I’m way more go with the flow of canon–but Hussie is just going out of his way to sink every single ship there is, and I think that anyone with a favorite pairing should just resign themselves to an inevitable breakup. .

Yeah, I pretty much freaked out when I found out it was going on hiatus. I thought I was near a breaking point during that six-day hiatus a while back, now I’m just… going to not think about it.

From page 8173 (the cartridge’s instruction manual), it appears that Act 6 Act 6 will be split into six sub-acts narrated by Caliborn, with the cartridge’s content being the intermissions. I am hoping the intermissions will be longer than the acts themselves, because Caliborn is annoying (of course). But through his narration we’ll probably learn the final steps of his transformation into Lord English–it seems a little weird that he’s stuck narrating when there are universes to be destroyed.

Wow, thre are a lot of super worrying theories concerning these past two upd8s. (WE’RE OFF OF HIATUS YAYYYYYY) most notably:
-At some point, John will die a heroic death (Doc Scratch said this at one point)
-Dave will also die a heroic death fighting LE and somehow erase himself from all timelines (as much as I hate this theory from the grounds of necer wamting dave to die, it makes a heck of a lot of sense and it’s been jeavily foreshadowed)
-Caliborn’s session will be scratched, and Calliope will dominate in the reboot
-It was once said that a glitch is the only way to kill LE, and since the special stardust caused the disc to glitch it will be his downfall
-Caliborn is Andrew Hussie (look at how his art has progressed! But in all reality I don’t think this is likely)
-John got away from Grimbark!Jade by doing the windy thing
-You fix a game cartridge by blowing on it so John’s going to do that
-Dave is working for LE *gasp* because in the feudal system a knight is right below a lord, and also he must have done sort of time thing since nobody actually told him what planet they were on. (Look at those pesterlogs. It doesn’t add up, so he’s LYING to all of his friends. For all we know, the Mayor’s not with him, either.
Just some musongs I came across. I’d love some input.

The thing about Dave is that he could just be a Future Dave. Time travel would be the simplest explanation for why he knows things he shouldn’t.

The Seer of Light’s words being obscured seems to be some kind of voidy thing. And after the alcoholism…Like, Rose’s information has this tendency to get obscured. She goes grimdark, she drinks, she suffers critical stardust failure, and her companions are kept in the dark. I actually want to go and go through the gif and transcribe what words of hers are legible, and try and get as much information as possible. (Also, we don’t know for sure that Terezi’s with her, if you’re not trusting Dave, since the information came to us second-hand.

I liked the flash with Jade, even though it was glitchy. It was cool animation.

Remember what happened last time we thought the Mayor was dead! And we’ve got a Hero of Life around (albeit one who’s serving the act’s most immediate baddie).
I find Dave’s reaction interesting — his “GET AWAY FROM HIM!” sounds genuinely panicked, not least because of capital letters and punctuation. WV’s been a joke/background character for so much of the comic, it’s hard to fathom the “main” characters having much emotional attachment to him, but it makes sense. Dave’s spent three years on a meteor full of horrendously damaged teenagers, relationship drama, and existential dread. The amiable, idealistic Mayor might be one of the few close friends he has.

The Mayor’s actually served a fairly important purpose in the comic, by bringing people together with friendship. It’s likely that Dave confided in the Mayor more than anyone else. After the last upd8 (in which he saved the Mayor) that became even more clear than it already was. However, going off of what Jade said on Lofaf right before Karkat got stabbed, Life powers only work once on somebody, and VW’s revival the first time was from a dead Witch Of Life Feferi. So that’s already two characters (WV and Karkat) that have used up their extra life.
I was really mad about today’s upd8, though. We’d waited so long for that Strider reunion, and the stardust ruined it.

Jade and Dave’s conversation just about broke my heart. Dave I just AUGH and then on top of that she’s using the Mayor to get him to fight her and he doesn’t want to fight, he’s given up, he’s given up time travel because it only ends in death, and Jade was sad about her breakup with Davesprite but she thought he was better off without her but what even went up with those two? And then she shouts “YOU BROKE MY HEART!” and then Dave was doing his whole not-a-hero schtick and I had to take deep breaths to calm down.

I don’t think the Mayor’s gonna die, though. Look at how far he and Can Town have come, and Dave would never EVER let the Mayor die.

Every upd8 from now till the end is going to give me emotional whiplash.

I forgot about that! I meant to finish it over the summer so that I would not be totally lost when all my friends made constant references to it at school (and also because I like it!), but Adventure Time and Star Trek got in the way… and now I only have a week and a half of summer left.
And I don’t even remember what happened in the last section I read.
And in that week and a half, I have to read up on water quality monitoring and take notes and learn to identify local insects well enough to lead tours on them during the school year, and learn even more about aquatic ones because of the water monitoring thing, and figure out approximately what to say when I start giving kids tours anyway. That, or do it during the schoolyear when I have homework.
      Oops.
But congratulations on finishing it yourself! That’s great!

I won’t spoil exactly who it was, even under vigorous spoiler headings, but holy cake. The person who got the Ring of Life was probably tied for last (with all the A1 trolls) in my speculation. Jeez. I gotta… I gotta rest for a bit. Big twists like this (along with blatant GRRM foreshadowing) always make my brain explode. I can’t think right now.
Also Gamzee had the ring on Rose’s pillow. Either it got to the Furthest Ring through shenanigans, or he managed to project it along with his dream projection. Anyway, Rose’s pillow is clearly the most important thing about this update. *coughs*
Again, what the cake. What is this person-who-shall-not-be-named planning? Aaargh I want to know! They are also a poor substitute for Vriska. Just sayin’.

With today’s update David Troupes has announced that he is bringing Buttercup Festival Series 2 to an end. This webcomic has had a big influence on me and I’m really sad to see it go. I spent a large amount of my hard-earned money on the Kickstarter for his “Renaming of the Birds” book, and when I get the pledge rewards I know that the Buttercup Festival original artwork will become one of my dearest possessions. A late Christmas present–today the rewards mentioned above (except for the original, which he says he’s shipped separately) arrived in the mail today.
-Two sets of postcards (including a note for me; one set is signed and numbered 129/1000)
Renaming of the Birds, the semi-children’s book this Kickstarter was for (signed)
The Fountain (a chapbook of uncollected poems and sketches he wrote while putting together Renaming of the Birds, signed and numbered 55/200)
The Simple Men, a book of poems, of which I already had one copy (signed)
Parsimony, his earlier book of poems, signed and with handwritten notes, explanations, and backgrounds on each poem

I hope the original artwork will get here soon, but until then I’m adoring Parsimony. It’s so cool to have the poet’s own annotations, like These repetitions of “for you” are another reference to Steven’s “Rabbit as King of Ghosts” which is in turn I believe a reference to an essay by Emerson… and Loving a single person, male or female, in a sense becomes loving all the world, including the sprawling, deadly non-human world and The bird really did this as I watched. Must have been a messy meal. and Both “Wolves” and this poem are failures to me, in retrospect. Treasured memories, but I feel like I only scratched the surface. and One of my favorites.

These are the same kinds of thoughts that arise when I write poetry. It’s interesting to follow his train of thought along the same tracks that mine travels on.

The Ava’s Demon author posted a while back that she’s looking for exciting, fast-paced songs for her next end-of-chapter video. I really wish my music sounded more professional grade; that would be so much fun. Webcomic and video game soundtracks are a big part of what inspired me to write music in the first place. By the time my music skills improve enough to be used in something of that caliber (The last song used was by one of the Homestuck musicians! Cool internet musicians!) then she’ll probably have an already-established music team. Ah well. At least I’m still working towards music making, and I’m writing a video game soundtrack for my school’s game dev club. That’s something, right?
