Hey! There’s no snarky phrase at the top of this thread! *pouts* Well, this might be first post, so I’m gonna have to say something about a movie.

    Uh…*thinks*

I watched Ace Ventura for the fifth time today. Isn’t it strange that every time I see it, it’s at a holiday party?? (No.)

Why is it that chick-flick sequels are always so much more unbearably, pointlessly stupid than the originals?

  3. Robert Coontz (Administrator) says:

I don’t know much about how things work in Hollywood, but I can imagine a scenario something like this:

    1. To generate a sequel, the original movie must have been fairly successful.
    2. Having created a hit, the writers and director of the original start to demand more money for their services.
    3. Unable to afford them, the movie producers hire a new, cheaper team with less talent, less experience, and less familarity with and/or commitment to the concept of the original movie.
    4. The result: lower quality.

  4. Beavo (and such) says:

3-That explains a lot, minus Shrek. I think the third was better than the second, the second was better than the first, and the first was mediocre.

What about series movies? Like Harry Potter? I think the movies directed by Christopher Colombus were lesser quality then the rest.

Oh! I did get first post! *dances*

  6. Purple Panda says:

I think sequels are terrible. Especially sequels of movies, but sequels of books as well. I think it’s much more creative to think of a whole new idea, with new characters and such, instead of tacking another story onto one that has already concluded, and had no intention for a sequel. I’m fine with trilogy or series books, where they’re supposed to go together from the start. But when a book or movie didn’t originally have another book or movie to go with it, it doesn’t work.

Walt Disney actually didn’t like sequels. (It was only after he died that they started making all the terrible sequels.)

I am easily scared by movies. Pocahontas, when I was in 2nd grade, gave me nightmares for 2 weeks. Disney movies still scare me, in general. Because of this, I have watched approximately 2? 3? movies made after 1970 by my own volition.

    About POTC 4…
The series has been in a steady decline. The first was great, the second was good, and the third was okay. Judging from the trend, POTC 4 will be mediocre or bad.
The good news is that, according to Gore Verbinski, the fourth movie will not be at all connected to the storyline in the first three. It will probably not include Will or Elizabeth, either. Bloom and Knightly have both said that they want to move on to other projects instead of remaining with the POTC franchise.
Summary: They have a chance at a fresh start. I hope they don’t blow it.

31–yeah, I heard that too. They can leave out Miss Swann (or rather Mrs. Turner) all they want, but I’m fighting for leaving Will in. I mean, come on, he’s the only guy under forty in the whole movie.

Just for the record, I think that the multiple Jacks thing was an ironic twist on how everyone’s always telling Jack, “can you live with yourself if you [insert crazy idea here]”. See, in Davy Jones’ locker he’s “living with himself”, because everyone’s always telling him that he won’t be able to, and he’s always saying he’s fine…..bleah. My train of thought just derailed.

I don’t have a lot of patience for movies and absolutely none for movie theaters.
I wanted to see I Am Legend but now I’m going to have to read the book first since someone said there’s a book.
I haven’t seen the 3rd Pirates movie yet.
I want to see Sweeney Todd so much but it’s rated R and that almost certainly means seeing it with my mom because my dad is like me and has no patience for theaters. I’d really much rather wait for it to come out on video but my mom put me on a guilt trip today so next time she wants me to do something with her I’ll feel miserable if I don’t. My mom is annoying that way.

I grew up watching Star Wars with my dad, which is probably why I sometimes have no concept of reality.
My favorite movies are RENT, Beetle Juice, Nightmare Before Chrstmas, Wizard of Oz, or pretty much anything by TIm Burton.
I’m a bit dissapointed that I missed the chance to see Sweeney Todd performed at the local theater. I’m going to feel bad about that the entire time I’m watching the movie because I try to make movies the last resort for absorbing a story.

  40. The Skipper Nancy says:

    21. moretrees08- But that’s a little different. Those weren’t really sequel because they were all filmed at the same time.

I saw Juno today. I enjoyed it, Ellen Page is a good actress.

I already posted about my most recent movie night on the Hot Soup thread, but that was before I saw this one. So I’m going to now. It consisted of
    1. AVP- A terrible movie. The pacing is off, none of the actors are good, and I might add, the premise is all wrong, because, as any sensible moviegoer could determine, Alien can dominate Predator’s pathetic invisible butt any day. But it was fun to shred to pieces while watching.

    2. Poltergeist- Lots of fun. From the early 90s (92 I think), so the effects are somewhat campy, but still that’s what gives it charm. It wasn’t that scary except for this one horrifying scene involving a clown-doll.

    3. The Shinging- yeeesssssssss. Quality freakageness. Of course, it’s a classic. I recommend to all. But be warned, there
    is gore.

Movies I would like to procure people’s opinions about:
    1. The Last Unicorn
    2. Alien (& its sequels)
    3. Sweeney Todd
    4. Terminator (& sequels)
    5. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
    6. Pitch Black

    Poltergeist? Love that movie.
I want to see The Shining.

Alien and it’s sequels – LOVE Alien. All of them are very good, but there was a slight decline as the series went on… The first is best.
Sweeney Todd – love it to death (ha ha). The blood did not disturb me at all (I think it disturbed my dad though). Yess.

Movies that Penty has seen recently:
-Enchanted, which is funny and cute, if cliche.
-Ratatouille, which is cute and beautifully animated.
-All three PotC movies, the first of which is wonderful, the second of which is setup, and the third of which is pointless. Also, all three of them have far too much Orlando Bloom in them. He is squinty and has exactly three facial expressions: regal, mildly amused, and mildly confused.
-Once Upon a Time in China, which I wasn’t really watching because I was talking to my friends.
-Blades of Glory, which is stupid even for a movie with Will Ferrell in it.
-Stranger than Fiction, which is good for a movie with Will Ferrell in it. Mostly I like the concept.

    Movies Penty wants to see:
-Golden Compass, which I am approaching with a ten-foot pole in hand.
-Sweeney Todd, which has Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen and singing and blood. Omnomnom.

I can’t decide whether I want to see Juno or not. I’ve heard it’s good, but I have enough teen pregnancy to deal with at my high school, much less in the movies. Is it just me, or are there more movies making pregnancy seem like no big deal? I mean, before Juno, there was Knocked Up, and that was the same thing. I dunno. It just seems like a bigger deal than the movies make it out to be.

65–I thought The Golden Compass was okay. It’s one of my favorite books, so I set myself up for disappointment–it’s just so hard to base a movie off such a complicated book. In general it was better than I expected.

55–Mirrormask was awesome! For some reason it freaked me out a little. Odd. xD

54–Pan’s Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies. It’s stupendous, and I really don’t mind the subtitles.

53/56–I recently saw Juno and it’s my current favorite movie. It doesn’t trivialize teen pregnancy or make it seem fun or something. If anything it’s saying DON’T get pregnant when you’re sixteen.

I saw Sweeney Todd last week and had a really fun time. Johnny Depp makes anything good!

I just watched Gone With the Wind on TV. O.o It was…interesting. I felt bad for the slaves more than I did for Scarlett, though. It didn’t help that the entire time my dad was making sardonic comments about the old South.

I don’t pay much attention to ratings anymore. Then again, I’m seventeen and the theatres don’t care. Plus my parents don’t really care either. I go see it based on if I think I’ll like it. I believe my first R rated movie was Amelie way back when.

Sweeney Todd is excellent. If you are fine with rather bent-on-revenge people slitting people’s throats with more blood than necessary you’ll be fine. There isn’t much sex in it or swearing. It’s mainly the idea of Sweeney’s insanity and all the blood it produces.

My dad told me about when his sister went to the midnight movie showing of RHPS at Kent State University a few years ago. They all bring coolers with tomatoes and plants and things. People throw stuff at the screen and dress up for it. He said there were people coming in wheelchairs and dressed as the characters.
Pan’s Labyrinth was amazing! There’s a new movie by the same director that’s being compared to it, but I don’t know what it’s called.

Noah was keeping tally of weather they died with their eyes open or closed, and we were all naming the songs that were played. i haven’t seen or read Eragon, and i don’t plan on it, either. it looks like one of those movies/books that are just…blah.

my brother has a gift, he can tell whether a movie is going to be good or bad, before he’s even seen the trailer, before he even knows what it’s about. it’s rather frightening at times, but very useful.

    Eragon (the movie) was terrible.
Eragon (the book) was overrated and I didn’t like it that much.

Haven’t seen Moulin Rouge, but we own it, so maybe I’ll see it. Someday.

Has anybody seen Spiderwick Chronicles? I’ve been thinking about seeing it, and I’ve heard it got good reviews, but I’d like to hear some Muser opinions. ;)

174- Eh. Could be worse. It’s pretty much independent of the book, which is OK if you don’t really like the book.

hey POSOC, Eragon and Eldest rock! (so will Brisingr) why do you say it was bad? sure, the movie wasn’t as good as the book, but it still pwned.

179- Well, the book was ripped off from Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. (I hear it was also ripped off from the Belgeriad, but I haven’t read that so I can’t confirm it.) The first book, despite being cliche, was at least somewhat engaging. I really didn’t like the second book. All Eragon did was whine, and the plot twist at the end? I saw it coming as soon as we learned a bit about Murtagh’s life. (That was in the first book, btw.) Basically just overstuffed. It felt like he was trying to develop his world as much as Tolkien did, but he put altogether too much information into it, and it made the narration seem awkward.
The movie, however, is as far from Eragon as Eragon is from LOTR. All the relatively good parts of the book were cut, the acting was awful, and I bet most of the people here on the blog could have written a better script.
