Movies

Dancergirl13’s idea. We haven’t had a movie thread in more than a year, and back then it was combined with books. Do Musers even watch movies? There’s only one way to find out…

Answer: Outside of a few (movies), we don’t really much.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

H2G2 the movie, inferior to the book but still OK.

haven’t been able to find a copy of Life of Brian to watch yet but haven’t really looked

I can’t think of anything else.

last movie seen (in theater) that I can remember: Akeelah and the Bee, last summer

movie wants to see: I have a DVD of The American President from holiday 2005 that I haven’t seen yet.

    Movies… hmmm. I haven’t seen one in a while.
    Does anyone like Marx Brothers?
And I have just been soaring on wings of cold silicon through dusty gigabytes of time, searching through ruins of threads long forgotten, and I saw the Muse/Harry Potter Fan Fiction. Then I got to thinking… What if the Muses showed up in other books and movies? Such as… DL forbid… Eragon?? Just a little suggestion for any of Our Exalted Administrator Dudes/Dudettes who are feeling creative and/or slightly evil today.

I think Muse fanfiction has huge potential, but Musers will have to write it. We adult types don’t have time. That’s why you haven’t seen the third installment of my Muses-meet-the-Order-of-the-Phoenix story, in which Mimi meets Draco Malfoy.

We should have an favorite actors thread(actresses too!) Where we can list our favorite actors/actresses and why we like them other than we think they are cute/pretty

    I WILL START!
*Christian Bale (AMAZING. and cute. The Newsies was the best movie ever and I love every song in it and oh my goodness I will ramble on and on so STOPPING NOW!)
*Reese Witherspoon (Shows that not only can she play lighthearted and lightheaded characters [Legally Blonde], but she can be serious, and win Oscars. [Walk The Line]
*Heath Ledger (A Knight’s Tale: other best movie ever. I’ve probably watched it 15 times. “It’s called a lance. Helloooo”If you haven’t seen it, you are being seriously deprived)
*Harrison Ford (STAR WARS! INDIANA JONES!)
Hehe.. I went over the top, didn’t I?

Oh, I went to Charlotte’s Web the other night. Mostly for my little sister, who wanted to go but not by herself. (We were house-sitting for someone who lives in town.) So I went, and so did my mom, and it was the most pointless use of my money I can think of, short of tossing into a gutter. However, I did get some Dr Pepper out of it, so it wasn’t all bad.
The worst movie of all time is Howl’s Moving Castle, though now that I’m over my obsession, I could watch it without being more than silently resentful.
If they butcher Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell I’m gonna DIE.
The funniest worst movie is Quatermass II, not because it’s meant to be funny, but because it’s so old the “horror” is anything but.
I like Wallace and Gromit a lot.

Oh man. I love movies. All movies. Including The Princess Bride, even though the book was not as good.

I watched a musical last night. It had Catherine Deneuve, George Shakiras (Riff in West Side Story) and Gene Kelly in it, and it was made in France in 1967. Wow. Lots of costumes, lots of scenery, the two main characters couldn’t dance and had truly incredible wigs, and you didn’t need to speak French to understand what people were saying. It was hilarious. I’m not even kidding. George Shakiras had to pretend he liked girls, which was good, and speak French, and Gene Kelly had to sing in French. He was the only person in the movie who could dance. It was a horrible musical. It included the two Honda guys, the young sailor who wants to be a painter, a kid named Booboo (Let’s go steal some PICNIC BASKETS!!) who was a pain in the ass, and other stuff. Very stylized.

Here are some of my favorite flicks:
    -A Lonely Place To Be
-The Philadelphia Story (NOT High Society, because only Satchmo saved that movie’s butt)
    -Ben-Hur, of course
    -Anything with Star Trek
    -2001: A Space Odyssey
-The Importance of Being Earnest (Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Judi Dench, Reese Witherspoon)
    -The Mummy

Um…I don’t really watch very many movies at the movie theater so that would be about it.

Movies I am looking at and maybe watching when they come out:

-Shrek the Third (but probably not…sequels aren’t usually as good as the origional)

Movies I desprately am waiting for:

-The Chronicles of Narnia: Price Caspian (comes out May 16, 2008-Waaah!)

    6. Happy Feet
    7. Chronicles of Narnia

and I would say Eragon, but seriously, the movie was horrible. I like the books so much better! And I’m sure that there are a bunch of other movies that I like a lot, but I can’t think of any right now…

I love the Princess Bride!!! It’s sooooo funny! I am getting the DVD probably tomorrow in exchange for Eragon which I got for Easter and am returning!!! YAY!!! The special effects are horrible, but the movie is AWESOME! Did you know that it probably was the basis of a lot of movies created today? For example, Zorro is based off of it (you can tell that just by looking at the main characters). I can’t think of any more movies based off of it, but my friend told me a whole bunch. I’m sure I’ll remember later.

And modern language isn’t the only problem with She’s the Man: the acting was almost unbearable, the “some are born great…” line thrown in at the end was groan-worthy, and the entire subplot with Sir Toby Belch, Maria, Aguecheek, and Malvolio was entirely left out, and that was one of the best parts. 46-Boris Karloff is a greatt actor. He was in a Walter Mitty movie or something. DORA IS AN ALIEN!!! She was like “ok say rojo……………………Good Job! Thats Right!” And all I said was azul.

48-I cried when they hung that guy when he didnt do anything. Thats racisim for you.

50-I havent seen Star Trek, but somebody who was an actor in it used to live in the woods (kind of woods) behind my house. My friend’s parents managed the estate! It was a girl I think.

55-I like Bend It Like Beckham too! Kiara Knightly (Jules) and The-Girl-Whos-Name-I-Cant-Pronounce (Jess) both had their breakthrough’s there. Jess now plays Nihla in ER and Kiara is a model or something. Whale Rider was Kiesha Castle Heus’ breakthrough too. She plays Mary in the Nativity.

So she secretly joines a girls team and befrends Jules (another player) and tells her parents that she has a summer job. Meanwhile, Jules and Jess have fallen in love with their coach, Joe. Jess kisses him, and Jules gets all mad and lectures Jess about love. Jules mother hears “you dont know anything about love, youve betrayed me Jess you really hurt me” and starts to think her daughters a lezzie. Then Jess’ parents find out about her soccer playing, and well…. oh look it up on wiki.

I wasn’t sure where to put this, or if somebody has made on in the past, but I have invented a thread-rating system:

A: Awesome for anybody. These threads are perfectly safe for anybody to visit.

B: Bad for babies. These threads are relatively safe, but those under the age of about one should be careful.

C: Caution recommended. Some material may not be suitable for those under nine.

D: Dangerous for those under 12.

E: Especially dangerous. Not suitable for those under 16.

F: Frighteningly ferocious. Do not enter unless you are an adult. (hopefully there won’t be any of those)

I will post each rating as soon as I see the thread. You may comment on my choice, or post your own rating, but I will be posting mine in bold so people will know which one is my rating. Thanks! *sends pie*

There was a breif discussion on the details of homosexuality on the religions v. 2007.2 thread, something that could scar people for life. That could be a D. I doubt there will be any E’s because the GAPAs would zap stuff that was that bad. I rate this thread an A . Or maybe a B .

The last movie I saw in theatres was The Lives of Others. It was really cool. I had never really known or thought about what it was like to live in East Berlin but this movie really shows you what life was like there. It’s rated R, though and it is a bit traumatic but really good. Before that was The Pursuit of Happyness which I just thought had too much pursuit and too little happiness. Before that Narnia? maybe? Unless I saw something between those and I don’t think I did…

I was at a sleepover last weekend and we watched both When Harry Met Sally which is a really sweet romantic comedy though they do talk about sex a lot and Never Been Kissed which is really oddly similar to Mean Girls. (It’s better than Mean Girls though and came out first and has a completely different premise, it’s just both have a “new highschool student who is split between popular and non popular crowd” type theme. they’re rather different though)

Re Golden Compass: I definitely want to see it, but I want to re-read the book again, just so I can be fully equipped to see the movie in its movie-ness. And so I remember everything in the book, and therefore can figure out all the discrepancies and such. I also have to wait around for THF to read it, because she hasn’t read it yet. ::jaw drops::

I didn’t like how they did when Lyra was reading the answer in the alethiometer, with the dust forming shapes, and I can’t remember how the book ends but I know it wasn’t like that.
Other than that, I really did like it. I am very glad that Lyra turned out exactly how I imagined her. :)

    (164) Presumably Pullman told the actors how he pronounces it.

The “Lord of the Rings” movies did a good job on pronunciation, the big exception being the name of Saruman’s hangout, Isengard. Tolkien’s appendices give specific instructions about how to pronounce vowel sounds, and long “i” is not part of his phonemic palette.

I saw The Water Horse recently. It was diverting, but horribly, horribly, cliched. I knew every character’s relationship to the story the moment they appeared. The water horse itself was less than wonderful, and I absolutely cannot stand those angsty eleven-year-old boys with fathers missing during WW2. Ugh. At least Angus wasn’t played by Freddie Highmore. I strongly dislike Freddie Highmore. Yesterday my mom was telling me about August Rush, and I was enjoying it until she remarked that the kid was played by Freddie Highmore and I just went – “Oh.” and lost all interest.
