Types of Dragons
Flying Dragons
Flying dragons tend to only fly at night and when in flight are often confused with condors or eagles. Seeing them from the ground is not an easy task since they are incredibly good at changing their colors and blending in with their surroundings. It is believed that their wingspan is only a mere 10ft, if that and they only fly in groups when migrating. Flying dragons are found primarily in once-volcanic mountainous and tropical places. When it is not migrating season they tend to behave like the larger, flightless dragons and stay in caves, volcanic craters and deep mountainous canyons.Wyvern
A creature with two wings and two legs. Often the Wyvern is shown with claws on the wings and having a sharp tail tipped with poison. Wyverns are sometimes called “dragonets” in England because of how closely the resemble dragons. Wyverns typically live in caverns which are readily identified by bones and jewels sprawled about.
Amphitere
Amphitere’s originate from Mexico and have only wings.

These dragons tend to spend most of their lives in the water (usually freshwater lakes with outlets to the sea). They sometimes migrate when the lakes freeze over and are fish-eaters. They are depicted with having a long neck, small head with lots of sharp teeth, and paddle-like legs used for maneuvering. The most famous water dwelling creature is the Loch Ness “monster.”
Sea Serpents
Sea Serpents live only in water, fresh or salt, were once confused as being gigantic squid or huge masses of sea kelp.

Mostly found in the Caribbean or Mexico, they are not known to be aggressive or vicious towards humans. They live in water-filled limestone caverns. Flightless dragons are thought to control the onset of summer and can produce rain.Basilisk
A basilisk is reproduced by its own kind, rather than a rooster laying an egg and it being incubated by a toad, like the cocatrice. This creature has no legs, instead it slithers about on the ground. With a red-scaled body (upper portion) and a crowned head, the basilisk is a strange sight. Deadly and cureless is the basilisk’s poison and with just their gaze they turn things into stone. The only way to destroy a Basilisk is to trick it into looking at itself (through a mirror), thus turning itself into stone. There are, however, three things that are immune to its gaze and noxious breath. The weasel, the rooster whose crow sent basilisks running, and rue, a plant which nullified the breath (eaten by the weasels to heal themselves). The basilisk, king of serpents, is thought to be confined to northern Africa and western Europe, just like the Cocatrice.

The cocatrice is very similar to the basilisk. So similar in fact that the cocatrice is the result of the metamorphosis the basilisk under went in the Middle Ages. The cocatrice has bird-like legs, feathered wings, and wattles. It still has the scaled body and tail, however. The cocatrice is the child of a rooster (only a rooster) and is hatched by a toad or serpent. The Icelandic equivalent is the skoffin.

Drakes have legs and no wings. Fire-drakes, which breath fire and are a reddish color and Cold-drakes which breath snow (cold stuff) and are a light blue color are the two types of Drake. These dragons do not fly and their size ranges from 4′-40′.
To the topNaga
Nagas are strange creatures with a snake-like body and the head of a human. They are sometimes thought to be able to morph from full human to full snake. Nagas do not have wings nor are they considered harmful or dangerous. For more information about Nagas, check out Naga: The Serpent.
To the topWyrm
Wyrms have no legs or wing. They are referred to as ancient dragon. Some famous wyrms are the Laidly Worm and the Lambton Wyrm.

Evolution and Nature of Unicorns
Despite popular belief, Unicorns did not evolve from horse-like ancestors. Instead they are descendants of cloven-hoofed mammals like pigs, camels deer, and antelope. This is because unicorns have cloven hooves and have true horns which you will find on no horse, only cloven-hoofed animals. To narrow down their “relatives” even more, we can say that they are more likely to be related to antelope as opposed to deer because of the horn. Deer antlers are bonelike structures that grow out of the males (generally) forehead in the spring and summer. The antlers are then shed for the winter months. Now the horns found in antelope, cattle and seep are never shed and continue to grow throughout the animal’s lifetime. Also, both sexes typically grow horns where as only the buck (male deer) grows antlers.
The earliest known cloven-hoofed mammal fossils date from the Eocene times which was about 50 million years ago. The stock that gave rise to the antelope. Their kin did not, however, appear until the Miocene Era, which was when many kinds of antelope-like creatures first started appearing in southern Europe and the Great Plains of Asia. One of these mammals was the Prostrepsceros in India, which is probably an ancestor to both the antelope and unicorn.Some of the fossil types found in the cooler forests of Asia revealed the Plioceros bicornus which probably moved into the Alps of Europe and some into the southern slopes of the Himalayas and was also most likely the earliest type of unicorn. Since the population of the oldest known unicorn was split (some in Himalayas, some in Europe) they adapted to their environment and grew apart in similarities, thus making the European Unicorns and the Asian Unicorns.
The classical unicorn Equus Monoceros, is perhaps the most common, according to cryptozoologists. There is also the Equus assinoceros, which is thought to have existed in India and resemble an ass.

There are a few explanations for the lack of unicorns in modern day. The most famous perhaps, is the story of Noah and the flood. Noah, who was gathering a male and female of each species, failed to take a pair of unicorns onto his ark. When the flood occurred, the unicorns were wiped out. Another belief is that they were hunted to extinctions, much like the do-do bird. There is yet another is the belief. After the demand for the unicorn horn decreased (perhaps because of a lack of belief in unicorns altogether), they simply faded out. Moving away from the human world.

A unicorn has magical powers, rooted in the horn. Their horns, which are spiraled (tightly or loosely), can be white, gold, black, or even rainbow colored, depending on the age of the unicorn. It is even theorized that the horns are whitish on the outside but black on the inside. Both males and females grow horns, but predictably, the female horns are smaller. Males horns continue to grow throughout their lives. The youth have white horns. They are believed to have medicinal uses and made of an unusually strong substance. It is believed to be an anti-toxin, and able to purify entire rivers with a single touch of the horn in the water.Males are thought to be extremely territorial during the mating season. They will attack other males presumable to keep them away from potential mates. Female unicorns are the most attracted to the male with the largest horn. They are believed to be sexually active in the fall, and have young in the spring (usually only one offspring). Gestation is roughly the same time for unicorns that is is for humans – 9 months. The female then leaves the males territory and secludes herself in the forest for the winter.
They are also said to be attracted to virgins, which is one way that they were hunted. Virgins represent purity, and a unicorn is very pure. By using a virgin, hunters were able to seek out unicorns and take their horns, killing them. Unicorns are also able to detect virgins. If the horn of a unicorn pierces the heart of the woman, she is not a virgin. If it passes through her, the maiden is pure (virgin). This method is sometimes said to be applied to trustworthy and sincere people in general, such as in the Xanth books by Piers Anthony

Uh… here goes:
The phoenix is a mythical bird created from fire. Plumage is mostly scarlet and gold, but some rare specimens have a few flame blue feathers. There are several kinds of phoenix, the most common one being a peacock sized fowl that, every few years or so, bursts spontaneously into flame and is reborn as a hatchling from the ashes. These birds have an intelligence ranging to slightly above that of the spotted dolphin. They can lift great wights and can only be killed by drowning or smothering. They are prized highly as pets.
The next most well-known specimen is the legendary Firebird, Which is not only born of flame but consists of it. It is an ancient entity and is rumered to live in a dormant volcano. It can increse and decrease its size and appearance at will, and therefore the Firebird leaving its lair is often mistaken for a volcanic eruption. It is mostly benevolent and is the elemental lord of Fire. It has been known to deal with humans.
th ethird kind of phoenix is not made of flame at all, but is the size of an elephant and has plumage in every color of the rainbow. There is only one alive at any time, and every 2000 years or so it wakes from its deep sleep in its mountain lair and flies around the world, heralding change and a new age. It then dissapears; but always it lays one egge from which hatches a new phoenix, which slumbers untill its time to herald a new age and lay an egg.
the final species of phoenix resembles an ibex or crane more than anything, and it is made of the sun, not of elemental fire. It is said to burn with a white-gold light and produce heat. There always two birds at once; a mated pair. They are said to pull the sun out of the water every day. They always lay 2 eggs, from which the next two birds hatch when thier parents have died.

Bennu
The bennu, known as a phoenix in Greek mythology, is a vibrant red and gold bird. This sacred bird of Heliopolis resembles a heron. The bennu lives on an obelisk outside of the sanctuary in Heliopolis where it is worshiped alongside the gods Ra and Osiris. Sometimes considered a manifestation of Osiris himself (sprang from Osiris’ heart), this bird is said to have created itself in the fire at the top of the Persea tree. The bennu symbolizes rebirth with its rise from the ashes.

In ancient times this bird was called “Albinus” for its lack of color. This bird has the unique ability to draw out illness (including blindness) from a human and take it into itself. The bird then flies toward the sun where the sickness is burned away. If the caladrius looks away from the ill person, however, death is in their future.

Chi in Chinese means “energy” which is what the Chi Spirits are all about. They are house spirits similar to brownies however no one has ever seen a Chi Spirit. According to the book A Witch’s Guide to Faery Folk, the Chinese will go to great lengths to make sure that the energies of Chi Spirits are not obstruct in any way. Furniture will even be moved to allow the free movement of their energies. If the energy of a Chi Spirit is blocked there is generally no harm to humans. However if there is extreme blockage, hauntings, illness, and disturbances may occur.

Gans are Apache mountain spirits. They are neither good nore evil and can be found in the mountains of the American Southwest.
To the topGriffins
The griffin has the head, fore legs, and wings of an eagle. The body and tail is that of a lion. Sometimes depicted with horns and huge ears, the griffin is a symbol of vigilance and strength. In Greek mythology griffins belonged to Zeus, king of the gods. The griffin is also known by the names Gryphon, Gitto, and Griffith.

A harpy is a truly interesting sight. With the head (and torso in some sources) of a woman, and body of a vulture, this creature is incredibly filthy. In Greek mythology there are three harpies, all daughters of Electra. Aello, Podarge, and Ocypete were sent by Zeus to steal the food of Phineus, king of Thrace. This was punishment for his ability to predict the future too well in some stories, while in others it was punishment for mistreating his children.

Shape-shifters that appear as bird, these creatures have been known to gather in groups, buzzing people for the fun of frightening them. No human has ever been reported to have been physically harmed however. They are most active in late afternoon and early evening.

Only one of these magnificent birds lives at a time. The Phoenix is a beautiful bird resembling an eagle. The phoenix has rainbow-hued wings and scarlet feet. In Greek mythology it was believed that the phoenix was in Arabia, living near a cool well. The phoenix is said to sing a song so beautiful that it stops the sun-god in his chariot. When the feeling of death approaches (500 years, some people say up to 1461 years), the phoenix makes a nest and sets it on fire. In three days, out of the ashes, rises another phoenix. The roc is a huge bird believed to have a wingspan of up to 60 ft. This enormous creature can be found in the story, Thousand and One Nights. It is said that this Arabian bird carries off elephants for food and that their eggs measure 50 paces in circumference.
To the topSlyphs
The Slyphs are small, winged creatures. They have vague human features and appear transparent. They are so light that they float in the air for long periods of time. While doing this they barely use their wings so it is believed that they may be vestigial.

in December 12th, 2005 @ 16:42Dragons Rule. There is also a book called Wizardology, Egyptology, and a smaller but more advanced sequal to the normal dragonology. I was searching (on-line) for some info. on all of the mythical things of the world, and found this “Encyclopedia Mythica” thing. It is really hard to find something specific on it unless you push Ctrl+f. I reccomend just browsing. It is remarkebly strange/creepy how people all over the world have almost identicle “mythical” beliefs, but call them by different names.

in December 12th, 2005 @ 16:57What about Naiads and Dryads?!? They are people too. possibly. Most say thay are all female, but some sources say they can be male.
I just actually took the time to fully read those long, but really awsome and imformative paragraphs, instead of just browsing through the parts I am most interested in (dragons, Phoenixes, unicorns, etc.). Does anyone know about/ do Tai Chi? My mom used to do it (she tried to teach herself) but her chi became crazy, and she started aquiring massive migranes. I read books on that tipe of stuff (not migranes, Tai Chi).
Very interesting.
I believe in all of that “mythical stuff”.(or most of it, anyway).

i like dryads better than naiads. i have no idea why seeing as they’re almost the same thing. i guess i just like trees…
I ♥ making up my own mythical creatures…I made a slug/centipede type one today…actually it looked a bit like a bunny too except it had too many legs and mucus…one of my nastier ones.
I like horse type ones best…

caladrius: white swan-like bird that, if brought ot a sick person. can tell if they will live or die. If they live it sucks thier sickness into itself and then dispells it.
Alicanto: bird that eats gold and silver (as well as other precious metals). when it eats gold it shines like the sun; when it eats silver it glows like the moon.

mythical creatures…i dunno. some of them i sort of believe in but some of them are just unbelievable. if they do exist then they live in another realm…
maybe they throw their weak and useless into our world…like lizards and stuff…maybe they realize that things like that could never survive with them so they give them to us…

My own creation (my precioussssssss):
DRAKKAR (Draco drakkaris)*
Drakkars are a small, fast species of dragon that usually lives on islands.
Iruinian drakkar (D. drakkaris iruin)
The Iruinian drakkar is much smaller and foul-tempered than many of its cousins. Its scales are usually grey-green in colour and sharp. This species has been almost wiped out due to non-native strains of scale rot being introduced to the highlands of its native Iruin.Dorith drakkar (D. drakkaris thirelnadorith)
The Dorith Drakkar, the national animal of Thirelnadorith, is one of the only species of dragon widely recognised as existent. It is usually white and has no wings. Its firey breath can extend for 100 feet and still cook meat. This means you.Water drakkar (D. drakkaris michigani)
Usually found in Lake Michigan and mistaken for a wave. White and blue, with wings adapted for swimming. Very mysterious. Has nasty tendency to shoot out jets of boiling water from its nostrils when threatened. Therefore, the author hasn’t learned much about it.*Though some people say that drakkars should be their own genus, I say pish. The drakkar is one of the most dragon-like species of dragon out there. Much more dragony than the basilisk.

Once I wrote a story about some waswolves, as opposed to werewolves. It was amazingly fun.

i made a group of Mathematical Mythological Monsters today. made out of regular trapezoids, isosceles triangles etc. obviously done during math. fuuun suff. So I had them fight the dragons. The dragons won. of course. Dragons beat math any day.

in December 13th, 2005 @ 20:48my own werewolf thingie (as anrrated in the second Steel story):
werewolves: a seperate species. there is no way to catch lycanthropy. They can morph at will, nothing to do with the moon. Tall and lean with a long forehead. They have bigger paws, ears, claws, and eyes than wolves, and longer legs. They are much bigger as well. Have slit eyes is red, yellow, silver, gold, or green irises.
loup-garou: child of a werewolf and a wolf. Can only morph at night. Same apperance, but look more wolfish as humans. Human form has same eye color (see above/below).
wolfschild: child of human and werewolf. Can only morph in the daytime. Same appearance but look ordinary as humans, can alter human form to have vestigal claws and teeth, maybe even a ripple of fur. Human form has gold, silver, yellow, red, or green eyes with slit pupils. Usually this only happens when they are angry.
All aforementioned species are not predominantly evil, but wolfschildren and loup-garou, while they can communicat with both, humans, wolves, and werewolves, are often shunned from all species.

in December 14th, 2005 @ 16:00What about Nigel Molesworth and the gerund? It appears in my treasury on pg. 137, and is shown attacking peaceful pronouns, being led back into captivity by Kennedy, shut out, and lastly ‘cutting’ a gerundive.
The Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal is awesome. If you can’t see it, it can’t see you. And the Hooloovoo-Blue was Bop Ad’s favorite color. And also the Babel fish, proof of God (Bop Ad was an atheist) and totally skiddy dense.

inkllenk- a shape shifter, squirts ink out of body as defense, can shape shift to any form, dangerous creature, it will eat you alive if it sees you, how to defeat it- use powers to become invisible or talk soothingly to it to calm it then stab it in the ear with a sword, not a very nice creature, around waist high, can defeat 3 dragons at once, if it defeats and eats a dragon then it gains fire breath for a day.

in December 18th, 2005 @ 11:43I like… proper dragons. no wyverns. no animals. scales everywhere but the wings and joints, spines from neck to shoulder and from flanks to tip of tail, flexible neck, wing muscled on body so as to minimize work to get aloft, opposable ‘thumb’ on each foot . Eats certain minerals to bnuild gaseus fluid in ‘fire stomach’, when flexed gas sprays out and ignites. lotsa teeth. heehee.
I also made up a creature called a “nightsabre”, sort of like a giant predatory cat (largest species, the epic nightsabre, is 6″1 at the shoulder). They are very intelligent and VERY fierce, but some people have been known to tame them and use them as riding beasts. From smallest to largest, here are the species:Blackstripe Nightsabre
coat: pure white except for a broad black strip that runs from nose to tailtip.
size: 3″9 at shoulder
habitat: frozen tundra, although somtimes they ascend to the mountains.
disposition: usually shy, would rather run that risk direct confrontation. Not usually dometicated due to size and tendency to flee battle.Faer Nightsabre
Coat: can be mottled brown to rust to gray, and even a bit of black.
size: 4″4 at shoulder
habitat: Highland forest
disposition: pack animals. these cats band together to hunt and cooperate nicely. They are very territorial and will generally maul any person stupid enough to enter thier forests.Eyebite Nightsabre
coat: tawny to golden yellow, with black and brown spots consisting of an outer ring with an inner mark, like an eye.
size: 4″6 at shoulder
habitat: desert or savannah
disposition: most easily tamed of all the nightsabres. They are usually steady and reliable.

The sphinx did, in fact, originate in Ancient Egypt. A lion with the head of a Pharoah graced the halls of many palaces back in the day. Eventually, it became that the Sphinx was Lion with the head of a woman, guarding the city of Thebes in Rome (it must be up to long journeys, from Egypt to Rome), devouring all those who did not correctly answert her riddle, as can be seen in the paragraphs below that I conveniently stole from Wikipedia.
There was a single Sphinx in Greek mythology, a unique demon of destruction and bad luck, according to Hesiod a daughter of the Chimaera and Orthrus, or, according to others, of Typhon and Echidna— all of these chthonic figures. She was represented in vase-painting and bas-reliefs most often seated upright rather than recumbent, as a winged lion with a woman’s head; or she was a woman with the paws, claws and breasts of a lion, a serpent’s tail and birdlike wings. Hera or Ares sent the Sphinx from her Ethiopian homeland (for the Greeks remembered the Sphinx’s foreign origins) to sit outside Thebes and ask all passersby history’s most famous riddle: “Which creature in the morning goes on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening upon three?” She strangled anyone unable to answer. The word “sphinx” comes from the Greek Σφινξ, Sphinx, apparently from the verb σφινγω, sphingo, meaning “to strangle”. Oedipus solved the riddle: man – he crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and walks with a cane in old age. Bested at last, the Sphinx then threw herself from her high rock and died. In fact, the exact riddle asked by the Sphinx was not specified by early tellers of the story and was not standardized as the one given above until much later in Greek history.

Today I became bored in chorus and doodled a few mythical creatures. One was a sort of aquatic, lake-dwelling feline with a tadpole’s tail, that camoflauges as a clup of seaweed. (actually more of a lakeweed). I need to create a suitable name for it, though.

in December 19th, 2005 @ 17:06Kelpies rock! a kelpie is a mythical water horse, black or dark brown occasionaly, with seaweed woven into it’s mane and tail. It tricks people into riding it and then jumps into the water and eats them. Some can take the shape of handsome young men, but those stink. Some can be nice, though, and have helped young maidens who healed them. I love kelpies!

Okay something about wyverns.
Wyverns, although belonging to the same class and dragons, draconadae are different in several ways. They have two legs as opposed to four, and are noticably smaller and less intelligent than dragons.

Apearence: Pale Gray to Brown scales. Sometimes a light dusting of gray feathers to provide insulation. Eyes are usually amber, gold, or brown. About the size of an eagle.
Habbitat:Low, rocky foothills, though some have been known to nest on mountains because of overcrowding.Crested Wyvern
wyvernis exstravagantus
Apearence:Bright green, sometimes with streaks of rust brown. Males have a bright red, feathery crest which they extend to attract females and warn off other males during mating season. Full grown females can reach the eight feet.
Habitat: Tropical jungles.

okay. hmm. where to start to explain this confusing mass?
alright, first off there are the powers. much like the greek gods. anyways, there’s this one power that gets banished because he creates death (you might have heard of him as the lone one, the starsnuffer or balor the evil eye, of many others) he was also banished because he was always messing up things the other powers were making. now, imagine this: there’s a bunch of universes one around the other in a ring pattern. the farthest out are where the lone one was banished to and now resides in. timeheart is the very center universe that is what the our universe would have been had the lone one not interfered.

I think that Humunculus (Humunculi) are kind of out there. I read that an Alchemist made them some how. I think that instead of figuring out how to make a philosopher’s stone, he made a Homunculus and his twelve brothers. The only way a Humunculi can die: the person it gets attached to and loves/cares for dies, then it dies too.
In the book Tithe I mentioned a while ago is all about Faerie. There is a kelpie that lives in the river. One time it is asked why is drowns people. It was something like, he thought the look on the person’s face had the greatest amount of extacy or something. He ends up drowning the main character’s best friend. This book is not for, say 12 year olds and under. Some of those things teenagers really shouldn’t do.

1) The kind that live in your house and clean for you provided you put out saucers of milk. Archaic, weedy and wet. Terry Pratchett spoofed them as the Wee Free Men, a bunch of foulmothed Scottish blue pixies with red hair. But I digress.
2) The sort that are brown (duh! DOPE SLAP) and live in forests and eat fungi. They have little societies (kings, duchesses, the high priestess Somethingbutwot) and are mostly concerned with eating things and eating things. Which isn’t a bad pastime, really. Sometimes they’re part of dark magic ceremonies.
