Just two more to go. Looks as if we’re going to make it, as the curtain rises…

Actually, I used antepenultimate on a write-up of a math problem. (It was about numbers in a list.) And I probably drop the word penultimate into conversation at least once a week. (I’m the type of person who drops words like capharnaum, cacography, and onychophagia into everyday conversation.)

  11. Another good word that geologists use is penecontemporaneous (pronounced “penny-contemporaneous”), which means “occurring (or created) at about the same time.” For example, you might know that two mountain ranges are about the same age, but not which one rose first. In one of his books, the science writer John McPhee imagines a way to work it into a conversation:

    “I’m sorry, am I late?”
    “No, we arrived penecontemporaneously.”

Answering my own question (sorry for the double post)…

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis–45 letters. It is a term for a lung disease contracted by inhaling very fine silica particles from volcanos. It was originally a made up word, but now it’s actually used to describe what it says it describes.

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu–85 letters. The longest officially recognized place name. (I just like that one).

  23. Alice says:

Argh. My woes aren’t terribly Muserly today, seeing as they are about ball gowns. A curious thing to be woeful about, given that I’ve never been to a ball. Some time before the fire S– (my mom) procured a very lovely light blue ball gown. Unfortunately, it was too large, so I set it aside until I had an occasion and I was large enough to wear it. Well, it went through the fire, and it came out fairly well, we thought, so we gave it a wash and it shrank. To my size. Which is astonishing and joyful. So I tried it on, and it’s the most amazing dress. But the smoke stains that are still there happen to be in awkward places. I need a way to modify it.

Dyeing it a darker blue would be perfect, except that it wouldn’t take evenly. So I’m still trying to think, and I’m not coming up with anything.

ANYHOW, that’s that. And it’s as not as though I’ll ever have an occasion to wear it anyway. *sighs*

Sometimes I wonder how cool it would be if someone had the sort of ball they used to in the Renaissance up to the mid-1800s. I mean, elegant waltzes playing, people dressed much nicer than they do today (today people dress like they want you to think they’re morons), champagne, a beautifully proportioned room with chandeliers….. Mmmmm. I’m a sucker for the past, especially history.

27-Just so. Sometimes, I stand in the middle of the hallway, hum the Blue Danube, waltz with myself, shut my eyes, pretend I’m standing in the midst of an immense ballroom, and procure a lot of stares. And I am competely serious about this.

I just got back from a dance performance at a theater near my house. It was one of those pieces where each of the dancers has a very distinct personality and I had a lot of fun making up stories that went along with the varying moods and characters of the piece.

Also, I suggest that all students may be permitted to leave the ball at any time to read a book or climb a tree, because I have had terrible experiences being stuck in a dance. It was, of course, way worse than any Muse Academy ball could be, but still, options are good.

Mm. *has visions of May Day Ball* *faints with pleasure*

Of course, it must be diverse. There may be people in Muse Academy who prefer pop music to classical, so we have to play all kinds of music.

I’m trying to think what would be the best setting. Um.

    Midsummer – outside, Chinese lanterns
Midwinter – inside, tiny twinkling white lights
    Hallowe’en – inside, dim light, jack-o-lanterns

May Day – Outside, I think, at night of course (all balls must be at night), with tea lights, maybe those floating candles. There should be a long table with various small snacks and beverages, and a May pole illuminated somehow with tiny yellow lights. Formal dress is required.

Well, mom’s surgery today was very successful! She had a Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic partial right hepatic lobectomy and cholecystectomy. Basically, liver resection. She originally had 6 tumors in the liver, and no more had grown, which is very good. The surgery took 10 hours, and her liver was apparently sticky, so they had to make a gigantic incision (instead of just laparoscopically), because they had to get their hands in there to make sure the liver didn’t stick to other veins and organs and such. Currently, she’s in recovery, then she’ll go to ICU for the next day or so, and be in the hospital for about a week after that.

Then, she’ll spend the next several months growing her liver back. Apparently the “hip and happening” cancer treatment nowadays, is Dendritic cells. (The “hip and happening” is a quote from my mother.) What they’ll do, is take the cancer cells from the tumors and mix them with cells from the immune system (I’m not sure exactly what kind), and create basically a cancer vaccine, which I think is pretty much the coolest thing in the whole world.

I don’t exactly have an opinion on kilts…I’ve never really seen them on anybody.

A very scary thing: On the Friday of Spring Break, you and your parents drive north for an hour to a pretty little town to walk around. You promptly see a girl you know from school who absolutely disgusts you* and are forced to spend the rest of the day hiding your face behind your parents when ever someone approaches. This is especially hard when you are pretty much the only person in the town with red hair and a square-shaped purple hat.

*[For example, this girl laughed so hard snot came out onto her hands. She wipes her hands dry on eachother (covering both hands in grossness) and grabs all the papers the teacher passes to your table before you can take a clean one.]

103-For multiplication, you can either use parentheses or an asterik, or no symbol. So it could be 4x if it was just that.
If you had another number it would be different. 4x(9) or 4x*9 would mean 4 times x times nine. Just don’t use x for a multiplying symbol, because then you cant tell if it’s for a variable or a symbol.

Ok, the last time I was on here there were like ten posts, so I’m gong to answer all the things that have been going on on this thread without posting post numbers. I love disorganization.

On the subject of kilts: I suppose I like them. A boy at my school wears one sometimes, because he’s part Scottish or something…he’s also the one who walked around barefoot until someone caught him, though, so he may have just wanted to be exciting. Our school is so gross that walking around barefoot is probably equivalent to picking fleas off someone with the black plague.

On the subject of dances: a ball sounds lovely. I suppose I shall have to start sewing my ball gown…what era shall our costumes be, and what nationality? I’m thinking either 1700s French, Victorian American, or Spanish mid-1800s. I suppose fans are required?

On the subject of hemophobia: I’m not afraid of blood, or even needles, really, just something sticking into me and sucking stuff out…gross. I’ll probably never give blood. I can’t even take it when the nurse sticks my finger at the doctor’s office.
My worst nightmare…I think in recent memory, it was a rather interesting one that I should probably turn into a short story. A foreign nation had taken over America, and all the Americans were being killed. My Chem teacher (no idea how she got in there) was a spy for the other side and was supposed to kill my sister and I. We were locked in this really frightening machine shop, and my Chem teacher had hypodermic needles filled with poison, and was supposed to stick us with them and then get out before the whole place was incinerated. I think I hit her over the head with a rock…but then the door was still locked and we couldn’t get it open, and right before I woke up I was wondering whether it would hurt to die…
It was rather frightening and violent. I have extremely vivid dreams, probably thanks to my overactive imagination, and sometimes they’re wonderful, but other times I have very, very frightening ones. Funny, isn’t it, how nightmares center on our worst fears? It’s like are brains are saying, “Oh, this scares me to death, let’s put me in this situation and make me stay up half the night trying to convince myself it’s not real.” Bleah.

I thought kilts were pretty cool until I walked into band one day and noticed that my stand partner was wearing a kilt. I do not particularly like this person, and the kilt looked rather bad on me. Nor is he Scottish; in fact, he is 100% Italian. That set me against kilts. (Of course, I love the Malvolio costume he wore for Twelfth Night complete with neck ruff and yellow stockings. I’ve felt like that before, I think. I must have. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like that right now. I wish I did.

OK, I just forced myself to read the entire thread from where I left and I couldn’t take in any of it. I think I’m going to scream.

I don’t even know what’s wrong with me. It’s not some serious mental disorder or anything like that. I just carried three extremely heavy bags about 14 blocks, with Opal purposely annoying me all the way, then up a hill, then up another hill, then up our staircase. During that ordeal, I decided that Opal no longer existed in my mind, because that is the only way I can tolerate her. And then I come on MuseBlog and I see what has happened at the H&H since I was on here at seven yesterday. I can’t keep up!

I’m the verge of tears, and screaming, and laying on the floor crying until I can’t cry anymore, and then just laying there apathetically for hours.

Dang. And I even had an interesting story to tell. Never mind.

invest in a journal, or anything else to get your thoughts out. If your sister is bothering you to the point where it effects your emotions in a way that you feel is harmful (i mean to say more than just sibling annoyance) then talk to someone about it. A friend, a counselor, heck tell a dog. Just think about what’s bothering you, rant about it somewhere. MB is not a good place to rant because of the way it’s not centered on you, and how different conversations thread through each other. Advice thread might be good? I forgot where it is though.

Mybad. I’ve been telling everyone that today is Emma Watson’s birthday, but in fact it’s tomorrow. If by some slim chance Emma Watson ever reads this, I apologize. Boy, is Emma Watson attractive. Not that I fancy her, I’m into this thing I’ve developed called “appreciation without desire.” I developed it last Saturday when I saw my mate’s girlfriend in a bikini. Actually, I’d been using it long before, it’s just that I came up with the phrase then. I should stop talking.

Now, when someone thinks of a mango, adjectives spring to mind like “juicy,” “refreshing,” and “succulent.” Mangoes are lovely firm pieces of fresh juicy fruit, right? So whose idea was dried mango? If you want mango, don’t settle for a dessicated strip of something that could pass as beef jerky if you put enough hot sauce on it.

229- There’s no need to stave off April. My birthday is in April. What we need is a way to stave off irritating cold weather. It’s spring, stop the cold rain and biting wind already.

Today the fire alarm went off in school, and everyone stood around outside for twenty minutes watching the fire trucks come up the drive. It wasn’t a drill, nor did anyone pull it. Apparently it was an “equipment malfunction.” Now, our school is two years old. Brand new in school terms. How do you build something like a fire alarm system so that it screws up in two years? I don’t know about you, but I seriously want something like a fire alarm to work right, especially one accompanied by loud sirens and strobe lights (and apparently the malfunction was such that the strobe lights stayed on for another hour). It’s a bit chilly here today, too, so standing around outside holding a stack of books with no place to sit down is not my cup of tea. Can’t my school do anything right? I want a fire alarm system that works!

But anyway, besides suggesting a series of books called (Insert Math topic here) The Easy Way, he said that one of the best jobs in the world is being a science writer. I have no recollection of how he started on this subject. Apparently it’s really rare to find someone who can both understand complex scientist-talk, and then explain it to common people in an interesting manner. He said you can also make tons of $$, but I’m not sure if he was joking about that part.

Probably not because there was an anti-abortion one a few months ago, so it seems like copying, and I would also be frowned upon for “letting my life be run by a myspace page” even though I don’t actually have a myspace.

At my school the kind of people who do those things are what I call top 8ers because they are so obsessed with myspace that they get upset if they aren’t in their friends top 8 or however many.

I swear my sister thinks she is everyone’s mom or something. A few minutes ago my mom and I went into her room to look at the baby gerbils and my mom told her that we were just going to see if their eyes were open really fast, and she was like “You better stop going in my room because it’s really annoying” And then my mom told her that it was just for a few seconds and she ran upstairs yelling “Did you listen to a word I just said?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!????????????” in a really angry mother-you-want-to-hit voice. Now she is yelling at me to turn the tv off because I turned it on and she doesn’t want it on. I told her that if she doesn’t want it on to turn it off or go somewhere else, so she said that I’m not allowed to look at her gerbils or go near her room or anything ever again. I was going to turn it off if she waited 5 minutes without telling me, because when people bug me to do stuff I just wait until they are quiet for 5 minutes, but I guess she feels too much like being a 2 year old pretending to be my mom today.

My sister is in 7th grade. She still has yelling tantrums and just stopped having kicking-screaming and being-carried-to-her-room-by-my-parents tantrums last year. I know I’m just as spoiled as her, but when I don’t get my way I know I can’t change it. She always gets her way by having a tantrum. I mean she’s a teenager! She should be able to control herself.

Actually, most teenagers can’t control themselves.

Some of our living history friends have decided to put it on at a local event at the end of this month. It should be lot’s of fun, even though some of the songs are evil and some of those guys never keep a song in the same key….I tried playing accompaniment for their singing one time and when they decided to modulate down because the notes got a bit high it all totally fell apart. Oh well.

Everyone I have something to post that is very important to anyone who is concerned with the well being of animals.

You may have heard this going around the internet, but I’m gonna paste it anyway.

“Last August at a Costa Rican art reception, one exhibition roused more attention than expected. In one corner of the salon-turned-gallery, an emaciated dog was tied to a wall. Its involuntary mission was to be on display as an artistic message, and was accompanied by a statement on the wall created with dog food reading “You are what you read.”

The guilty artist, Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas, had paid two children to capture the dog from the street to use for the exhibit. Already in poor condition, the dog was refused any care by Vargas’ orders, and within a day of being on display it passed away”

This is total cruelty and hypocrisy. This is not art, this is taking an already sick animal and passing it off as some kind of moral message. I’m made sick by it, and the pictures I’ve seen while looking for more information make me indescribably sad…The fact that another gallery wants this repeated is just baffling.

Please, please everyone spread the word if you can. There is a petition going around, but you know how effective online petitions are…

i have gained a lot more confidence in my acting skills in the last couple of days! i never actually thought i was that good until i found myself competing with a senior (who is also my english intern, and gave an outstanding performance in another school play recently) for a part in a school play. the directors even took me aside and told me i was amazing and i should audition for everything i can, but i probably won’t get the part because i’m young and there’s a love interest. the senior i was competing with also told me that the directors (whom she is familiar with, for they are seniors as well) told her that they were ‘blown away’ by my monologue yesterday.

Not as many people visit him these days and his old human pals like Herr Dorflein aren’t allowed to romp around with him anymore because Knut’s grown so big and strong he could hurt them. Oh, Knut! -Something like 2000 teams across the country entered, and we’re one of the top 4
-Each of the 3 people on my team gets $3000 dollars AND an all-expenses paid trip to WASHINGTON D.C. for the NATIONAL COMPETITION.

5 teams from my school got either a first place award, second place award, or criteria award
-Out of the four grades, my school won first place in two of them. (In the Northwest region, of course)

    *Wanders in* Hi folks! :P

194-Why thank you for thinking of me!

I know I’ve been away for quite a while now. The main reason was I have been very busy, and I didn’t have a lot of free time to post. I knew I’d want to say more than “HI BYE!!!” and leave so I waited until I had a better opportunity to come on :D

I’m going to try to go to a few threads…

I peeked in a couple of times while I was away, though. Great pictures, Lady b., I must say!

Also, who is Karinnn Tayyy? And has anything particularly exciting/tragic happened while I was away?

    363) I am disgusted by the idea that somehow letting a dog die like that does more and gives more of a message than actually helping out stray dogs. Its the fact that he takes an unwilling subject, a dog that was already sick, and ties it up and calls it art that bothers me. Yes I admit it does get people to think about stray animals more, but it’s still sick to me.

Where was the earthquake? Midwest? I’ll ask my grandparents if they felt it, I live on the East Coast though.

The dog was untied and fed between shows, according to the gallery. The artist hopes to stir up more news by saying that he killed the dog. I don’t think that it was nice to do to the dog, but hopefully it will change something in the way people are reminded of the strays. Do the ends justify the means? Art isn’t easy to define either, even if it was in a gallery.

399,403- Ya there was a 5.2 level earthquake at 4:37 am a couple miles north of st.caremel illinois (no idea where that is) but we felt it near st. louis, they felt it in atlanta, milwalkee….etc. I forget which fault it is, but it was definately recognizable as an earthquake. I was actually half asleep so it didnt occur to me, but it was actually pretty cool to realize what it was. There was also some aftershock yesterday at like 10:15, and scientists say we may feel aftershock for a couple of weeks to months. They dont know if it is the signal for a really big earthquake (the whole thing about getting an earthquake in 2012 because there was a devistating one in 1812) or if it will just die down. How cool is that? I mean, not if its devistating, but if its just a bit of aftershock it will be cool.

Oh no, not hair again… *cringes*

OK, whatever you personally want to do with your hair is your choice. Length and such is really your choice.

What I do want to say is, I know you all are trying your best to help people, and I appreciate and respect that, but try to think about “Locks of Love” for a minute:

When you have most girls–and some BOYS, yes, I’ve seen it–donating their hair to locks of love, you’re going to run into a problem: Too MUCH hair. Seriously, are there hundreds of millions of children who need this hair? I’m sure there are many, but not as many as there are people donating. And it makes me nervous to see so much hair being donated. What happens to the doubtless extra tons of spare hair? I’m not here to conduct an investigation or anything, but something fishy must be going on. Even if they’re just throwing the stuff out, it is really a shame that this “Fad” essentially of chopping your hair off and donating it has come about.

I guess that about sums it up. Again, I know you’re trying to do good, but I want you to maybe see how all of this hair cannot possibly be all used. *Hopes people understand and aren’t upset, as he is trying to be nice and helpful*
